Sometimes it's not about the money. If you travel the winter months and stay in Canada through the summer, then it's much nicer to spend that time at the trailer, than in your apartment.

Hi Tina and Norm 🤗 I think keeping the trailer is a great idea! You may not use it so much now while you're still in "Travel-the-World Mode" but once you slow down a bit you will really love having the trailer to go to.

Just a thought, is there, or should there be, a “swap my trailer” where you swap with other trailer owners across Canada….or beyond. Home exchange is very successful why not this?

We decided seven years ago to live "asset light" and shed our big home, boat, vacation home, toys, etc., and use all of that time, energy, and money on only doing what we wanted to do. Our current approach is "only new roads" so we are pushing ourselves to explore new areas and do new things. So far, it has been fantastic. We are exploring far more regionally and globally. We love not having to do any maintenance and to be able to just close the door to the condo and go.

We have contemplated this same decision when our boys grew up. We kept it one more year than we should have but when we sold it, there were no regrets. My advice is to keep it and you'll know when you should sell.

Not to be gloomy, but if one of you had a temporary health issue that kept you from traveling internationally, you still have your trailer to go for a closer-to-home vacation. It looks like it is in a lovely spot.

Hi. Your video was very timely (for me and my husband!). We have a small second home at a mountain lake community about 5 hours from our primary home. We want to retire soon and have been trying to decide rather or not to sell it to help offset finances- to help us be able to retire SOONER. Anyway, we are still undecided but am leaning toward keeping it because it has been in our plans to hold onto it so we could enjoy it when we retire! I think we are going to try to keep it and retire sooner than we had originally planned. I am working on getting our numbers to work out for us - we want to retire soooo badly! I told my husband though - if we sell the small lake home- we will never be able to buy one like this again. We would never have enough money to buy it. I believe we have a gem that we should keep for at least a few years after retirement to enjoy like we had originally planned on doing!

It sounds like you’re not yet ready to give up your trailer. One of the signs of getting older is giving up those things that you enjoyed. When I gave up my cottage because I could no longer manage with my heath etc it was with a sense of loss. I still look longing at my canoe stored in the garage. I think you’ve made a wise choice. Enjoy it for as long as you can for the day will come when you miss it.

We are facing a similar dilemma regarding our camp. Keep it or sell it? We haven't used it much in the past 3 summers, but upon reflection, cannot bring ourselves to sell.
Even though we haven't used it much lately, it is a refuge and a wonderful spot to go to
get away. I am happy that you chose to keep the trailer and likely, we'll keep our camp, too.
The Kincardine area is beautiful, especially the shores of Lake Huron. Also love Goderich and Grand Bend! Enjoy your trailer, enjoy the getaway, invite your grandchildren to spend a week each with you and make memories.

We had boats for 14 years. 30 ft cabin cruiser here on Vancouver isle. The marina was not a great place to hang out but the islands are. However being as we owned a business we used the boat maybe 14 days a year, at cost of about $1,000-2,0000 per night. I eventually grew to hate the boat, bored of the islands, resenting all the manual labour maintaining it, and being forced to do all summer getaways on a boat instead of travelling to EU, or airBNB, or cycling or backpacking. Was a happy day when I sold it 10 years ago. Bought a 2nd house in Arizona and love it, plus it goes up in value not down. As I just rtired we'll be there 2 months this winter and maybe 4 months/yr beyond that. I will never set foot on another boat.

Trailer life or van life isn't for everyone. I could never do it, and Ian is the same. But I absolutely love having a flat in England that we can go to... I've learned that my old body does best when I have a comfortable bed to sleep in every night and a good kitchen in which I can make healthy food ... and a nice carpeted bit of floor space with a set of dumbbells to work out every day! I've discovered that those routines are necessary to my happiness. We stayed in 28 places over the past 5 months in Europe... but now we are back home in Texas. Your "trailer lifestyle" sounds great because you are staying active and keeping fit. That is worth a LOT! As well as getting good SLEEP... that is priceless!
Nice that you've found your happy place ;-) XX Dara

We are having similar thoughts about our yacht. It costs us about $12K USD per year so it isn't as cheap as your trailer. However, the money isn't a factor. As 80 gets closer we are finding it physically more demanding to maintain and use the boat. We did just get back from an overnight, which was very pleasant, but will have aches and pains for a few days now from that trip. At any rate we have started talking about selling the boat. One option we have talked about is getting a smaller powerboat (still big enough to overnight comfortably on) to replace the sailboat.

Tina and Norm, its about the emotional value that you place your trailer vacation spot in your life, your family values, freedom, and what exactly that place means to you. Is it worth the yearly land rental or could you stay home and go on more day trips. If your children have a trailer there as well, maybe you could share it as well?
I only know, my dad sold his trailer early, and all us kids miss it so much! We would spend weekends as a family together from time to time and swim in lake Huron, have wonderful bbqs and picnicstogether.
We don't do that anymore! 😞😟

We had a family cottage for over 50 years and made the difficult decision to sell it about 10 years ago. We had wonderful memories but the maintenance costs were high and it wasn't getting used much after my Mom died. I honesty don't miss the cottage; I miss my Mom. As I get older, the more I want to downsize the amount of stuff I own. By selling the cottage it allowed me, along with my siblings, to pay down debt. Using your place 3 times a year for $4,500 per year plus depreciation costs is not worth it in my opinion but alas you have decided to stay. Friends of ours owned a trailer less than 2 hours away from their home right on a beautiful lake. A few years pass and they don't own it anymore. Costs got out of hand and they didn't use it anymore. Mind you they own a home in the suburbs so they have that to maintain. Another friend of mine had a great idea. He rented a waterfront cabin on Vancouver Island for 2 weeks in the peak of summer for the past 25 years. After enjoying the place for 2 fabulous weeks, he handed back the key and said "see you next year". I was actually jealous and I owned the cottage. Our cottage cost about $12K to keep even though it was "mortgage free". Renting a recreational property has it advantages. Even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would not buy a 2nd home.

However soon afterwards health issues meant travelling is no longer possible so this year we went out and bought another trailer! Every non-essential thing we have every owned and used has gone by the wayside eventually. This includes aircraft, etc. There is great enthusiasm at the beginning, but at some point, they become more of a burden because of the need to go some place to use them, pay ongoing costs for maintenance, storage, etc. So now we focus on going new places and doing new things rather than doing something over and over. We find exploring new places and having new experiences are more exciting and leave the maintenance labor and costs to others.

Keep in mind you can always move your trailer, closer to home might have you go more often if that's an option, my trailer park is also 2 hours from me but most people in it are from London 1 hour away but still on the lake, it's also quite a bit less expensive to rent a lot than yours. When you're done exploring the area you're in consider having it moved, or you could also always sell and buy another trailer down the road if you miss it.(I know you said you have friends and family there but you make friends wherever you go and bring the fam with you!) I'm surprised you only get there a handul of times a year, hopefully that can change, trailer life is such a nice vibe, life just slows down there for me anyway.

Sounds like you need to give the trailer another year or two to see if you want to keep it. Try to go more next year… as the more you go you may meet more people and have more fun. That’s what we are finding. Have gone to ours in Sauble 54 days this year so far and not retired yet. We have been hanging out with retired people and can see all they are doing at the trailer and I can’t wait to join them.

It’s a hard decision, and not one that anyone can make for you. We are in a similar position: living in London, summer place in Goderich. It would make financial sense to sell one to have more travel $, but we don’t want to give up our summers on Lake Huron! For now, we will maintain both while we figure out what we can live without and what we can’t. Really, we are very lucky that we have this kind of problem, aren’t we? I think you won’t regret keeping the trailer; the time may come that you think differently, and that’s okay. Enjoy the lifestyle you have for right now. You’re lucky too.

I love hearing about your adventures in Ripley! It's interesting how you've weighed the pros and cons of trailer life. It sounds like the connections and experiences you've gained are really worth holding onto. I totally agree-sometimes, you don't realize the value of something until it's almost gone. Glad to see you're finding joy in the little things, like swimming and biking, and even those delicious pancakes! Enjoy the rest of your trailer season!

We have two neighbors at our seasonal campsite in our slice of heaven in beautiful Pinawa Manitoba who spend 5 months at the camper (summer home base) and 6 months at their mobile in Arizona and one month visiting friends and family! Two mobile home bases and they love missing our beautiful Manitoba winters 🥶. Super economical and super active! Love your videos you guys. Getting ready for retirement and love all the options out there.

    • Any sort of health issue could cut your global traveling.
BUT you'll have the trailer, close to your Son & Grands.
I know out here folk spend a heck of a lot more than that to vacation in AZ.
    - no family - constantly worried about a trip to US hospital, - Scorpions at night.
+ GLAD, you're keeping the trailer.
+ It gives you peace of mind, heart ❤.
+ All those things that lined up to get that Park, the Trailer, the dealer moving it on set up.
ALL that doesn’t line up twice for a person.

Even, if it would only be for the reason of getting that huge ice cream, over in Hollyrood, then it’s a good idea to keep the trailer! 😂
So glad they still have these inexpensive ice creams.
Also, love passing by the horse pulled wagons on the road.

I agree with your decision to keep the trailer. I like having a second place that’s familiar but not home. My parents have a time share condo in Wisconsin and none of the small towns in the area have 1000 residents, but it’s enormously popular in the summer. My parents don’t go there anymore but all the kids and grandkids do. We have a roster of places we visit each year and sometimes add in one or two new ones.
Now that I’m retired I have thought about buying a lot in a couple of campgrounds and snow birding between them seasonally. I would start with one and see how it goes

Another similar story here but rather with a modest house on a 240 acre farm. We absolutely love it here, its a true sanctuary from our city home with its winding lazy river and incredible wild life. Sadly in the last couple of years we have not been visiting as much because of travel and whatever else has occupied us. That said I don't feel absolutely compelled to part with it as it really only cost us around $2000 a year in property taxes and some minimal utility fees. I rent out the pasture and the few head of cattle we have left get looked after by our neighbor. In the end any minimal operating cost that is left over I write off as a agricultural tax loss. We have also been fortunate enough to have bought the land at a historical low and its since increased by nearly 600% in the last couple of decades. Not to mention the land fills freezer with all the vegetables we care to grow and the occasional fish, Beef or Elk. I would love to pass it to the kids but honestly I don't think they would appreciate it as much as we do.

One way to look at it is you have a second property whose cost - other than sunk cost - is pretty reasonable (compared to, for example, a cottage that you rent or buy). If you only used it a month or two a year, you’d be getting good value out of it. Just a thought.

Hi guys. We had a trailer (15x40 park model) in that same campground from 2008 to 2014. We sold ours (it was in the M section), after we bought some acreage and were having difficulty finding time to visit the park vs all the outdoor related work we needed to do at the new place. As well, our kids got older and weren't as interested in joining us. Nonetheless, we miss that place and if we didn't have several acres of land to keep us busy, we probably would have kept our unit. We especially miss the ice cream at that corner General Store in Holyrood. :-)

It’s been 4 years since we let ours go, for the first year we were happy but we have missed it ever since. We can buy a new one but the prices have really increased and we cannot get back into the community where it was parked. We do have regrets. If a pandemic were to hit again, the trailer would satisfy our cabin fever if unable to travel. :(

I watched one such video a couple of years ago that had 3 Airstream campers to rent in a campground in the Smoky Mountain area. That's a lot cheaper than paying $4,500 a year😅

Once paid for, it becomes almost ideal for digital nomads who want/need to maintain a base. Lots of people need a base like this for family, medical, or legal reasons. $4500 a year for space rent, plus a few ancillary costs, isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. You would be hard-pressed to find an Airbnb or short-term option for that price. It also gives you the ability to store items and have a "nest".
If you don't have family, legal, or medical ties to an area or just find your home country unappealing or less exciting than other destinations, it may not be worth it.
We fall into the second category. We have no serious ties to our home countries and haven't lived at home for 5+ years now. It just makes more sense for us financially and medically, and we find our lives are more fulfilled elsewhere.

Regarding selling your trailer or not I'd say it's like answering the question "How do you know when it's time to retire?" You just know when it's time and it sounds like the answer on the trailer is "Not now". As long as the benefits out weighs the costs (those aren't necessarily dollars and cents) and it brings you happiness the decision is simple.

the pricing is not bad basically you are spending about $500 a month year round to keep it and keep it up and running. Pretty cheap for a 2nd home. Being an appraiser for a living I appraise RV's quite often. Unfortunately RV'S are plummeting in value again like they were pre covid, so I would not expect when you do decide to sell that it will be worth what you want. I think I would keep it until you find something else that the $500 a month would be better for!
