Just bought a Breville today and I was struggling. This video was so much more informative than manufacturer’s instructions! After watching I was able to immediately make a fantastic latte. Thank you SO much!!
The most useful work for Barista Express beginners in ten minutes, thank you. I made first espresso after watching this video... Thank you so much Ethan. You have prepared a very explanatory, fluent video and full of tips that others have not mentioned. Love it.
This video explained it the most thorough and quickest I’ve ever ever seen!! You were soo thorough but so simple with how you explained it! Wish I would’ve had this video when I was brand new to figuring it out!
I have the same exact Breville machine and it’s sitting in my basement on a shelf because I just couldn’t get my espresso right! This video was awesome and I’m getting my machine back out and following your video and making probably the best espresso I have ever made!! Thank you!! 😊
i’ve had my machine for almost a year now and i’ve watched so many videos and i’ve literally never been able to make a good espresso without dialing at least 2-3 times first. i followed you step by step and it’s the first good espresso i’ve made on the first try!!!
Just bought this machine and tried making espresso the coffee pick after the pour was coming out soupy than dry. This video helps a lot. Thank you. I'll try the steps and the tips explained for future brewing. Cheers
Hey Ethan, I normally don’t comment on your videos but I just wanted to thank you for this amazingly informative video about not just this machine but also coffee in general. I’m planning on getting your FLUR espresso glasses soon and I can’t to use them! ❤
Ethan!! This video was very thorough and easy to understand!! Thank you for this! That was the exact espresso machine I was looking to getting later this year
Bro thank you so much. I was gonna buy this machine but i decided to wait for the new Ninja Luxe Espresso Machine, but now i think i’m gonna pull the trigger on the brevile
I love your videos, and don’t know where to post this, but one thing I think you should add to your collection is Turkish coffee. It’s probably my favorite way to drink coffee
Hesitant to comment and ruin the perfect 69 comment count - but this was an INCREDIBLE, well-explained yet succinct, super informative video. I’ve had my BBE since Dec of last year and thought I had it all down tbh, until watching this😂Really excited to incorporate these tips and precision into my next brew. answered so many questions i had. thank you!!!
Oh, dang. I'm a fast food barista who uses an automated machine. In fast food, money is more important than people as well as actual coffee. I couldn't imagine having to learn all the preliminary coffee knowledge plus recipes.😮💨😮💨😮💨
Great video, thanks, Ethan! I understand the concepts and how to react according to how I get my shots, but I have to say that, at least for my palate, I can only get to a non-bitter taste when I extract fast shots. Every time I get on the "sweet spot" for dose, ratio, type of beans, grinding and time, I end up with a bitter shot, so I just gave up and don't care about timing anymore haha Any idea "out of the ordinary" of what to test in a case like this? P.S.: would love to know the grind setting you use on the internal burr grinder.
Ha! Count to 7 is exactly what I do. Actually I let my Breville Bambino Plus count for me. The pump pulses and makes a noise about every second when it’s running, so I just count to 7 like that
Please do a comparison of this machine vs the new ninja espresso luxe machine. That’s what ninja compared themselves with so it would be an interesting video!
Very informative, I also own the breville and which is weird using fresh medium roast and using 18g and yield usually 37g and extraction time is between 25-28 but it taste sour any advice please
Super interesting video! Question - I have the breville barista max and while the grinder can grind rly fine, the machine can't seem to create the pressure necessary to pull the shot. What can I do if I literally can't make the grind size finer without choking out the machine??
The machine is really good but There is a big problem with the machine, but you can fix it. How to Master barista Express: It is my first Espresso machine and I finally mastered it. Here is how to do it. 1) adjust flow rate by grinding finner or Coarser! There is an INNER Bur(!!) if you already on level 1 and the Espresso still flows to fast. (For me it’s 4 on the inside bur and 7 to 4 on the outer one - 7to4 depends on the age of coffee) - Goal: 17g beans IN 34g espresso OUT in 25 seconds Important! The Problem with the machine is the high pressure. It’s always on maximum when you follow all instructions. (16 bar!! - a perfect shot is 6-9 bar) You need to make a so called „pre infusion shot“ To perform a pre infusion shot You just need to press and hold the „Shot-Button“ until the shot is finished. Result: 17g IN 34g Out 25 Seconds with 7bar This way you can also use a bottomless portafilter and it won’t Channel anymore! Hope this little guide helps
also, when do i press the timer button on the scale? should i clock the moment i press the double shot button, or should it be pressed only when liquid begins to extrude?
I continue to get bad pressure even after playing around with the coarse vs fine measurement. Very frustrating. Any idea why? Are you using the double basket? I want high pressure.
First of all, thank you! But a question is still not answered: What‘s the ideal water amount? Depending on how ground the beans are, the amount of my espresso changes.
Most likely the Beans are too old. Try to buy freshly roasted beans and always avoid buying in the stores since they never have a roast date and are old most of the time. There are plenty of videos about this topic if you are further interested.
I have been following your advice but the extraction time is very short? And i can’t get it to extract 36g of liquid (using 18g of coffee). Any advice? I have set the grinder size to 4
People, if you’re just starting, please head the advice of “use fresh coffee beans”. Only buy stuff that has the actual roast date on it. There are different opinions on the best time to use beans for espresso… some say fresh roasted, some say 1 to 2 weeks after roast so some of the gases the beans produce don’t mess up the pulling of shots. My opinion is, don’t buy beans that are more than 3 weeks old, and don’t bother using them for espresso if they’re more than 5 weeks old.
I just got my Sage Barista Express and the machine looks great. But even with everything dialed in (18g coffee, 36g yield, 25-30s) it just tastes extremely sour. Beans are medium roast and were roasted 2 weeks ago. Can anybody help me? :(
Ratio 1:2 means you put 18grams of coffee (in case of a double shot) in your basket and expect 36grams of liquid to be in your cup. In case of a single shot you put 10grams of coffee into the basket and expect 20grams of liquid in your cup.
@@leonknte Yeah I figured ,thanks though for the clarification.I never gave any attention to the ratio before seeing this video and I always followed the 1:3 ratio as it is the one that many coffee shops use here in Greece.

I never leave comments but this video literally saved me from all the confusion of this time-dose-grind situation. Thank you!
This video explained it the most thorough and quickest I’ve ever ever seen!! You were soo thorough but so simple with how you explained it! Wish I would’ve had this video when I was brand new to figuring it out!
Thanks so much! That was the goal :)
Love the hand-drawn annotations. Clean, clear, and unique.
I am an aspiring cafe/coffee shop owner and just bought my first BBE today. I made my first ever latte with the help of this video

I appreciate how straight to the point that was.
I literally just bought this machine on prime day thank you so much for the help I was struggling!
You know its a good day when ethan uploads

I love how you used a sketchbook for the instructions, so creative!
I love how you hand wrote everything
Yooooo, thank you man, great video. You leveled up my espresso game so much, newb here and its much appreciated.
Wow this is quite detailed. Thanks. I don’t have an espresso machine yet but I’m saving this video for when I do.

Wow 👏🏽👏🏽 you just summarize 3 other videos that I saved. Great work! Thank you for doing this video bro 🤙🏽
This video is fantastic! It needs to blow up for sure.
Thanks so so much, this was well needed 😀
Glad it was helpful!
What a nice, informative and well explained video. You should try the greek versions of cold espresso called Freddo Espresso and Freddo Cappuccino! 😉
omg I really needed this!
I love your videos, and don’t know where to post this, but one thing I think you should add to your collection is Turkish coffee. It’s probably my favorite way to drink coffee
Love the sketch book I need a printed copy asap 😅
Brilliant diagrams perfectly explaining every aspect .
Question - what would you suggest about adjusting the internal burr grinder to ?
Thanks 👍
Sharing this with my mom!! 😄
Excellent video, thanks coach !
What number do you have the inner burr too? Amazing video!
Amazing Video!
Thank u for this brother
Thank you

Great explanation? Can you do a coffee siphon? I’ve been seeing them and they look cool
I set grind on 2 and even using the pressure basket only get part way into the gray area for pressure.
Ty this helped so much!😁

Ethan! When is Flur going to ship to the rest of the world? I needs it.
great video!
Please do a comparison of this machine vs the new ninja espresso luxe machine. That’s what ninja compared themselves with so it would be an interesting video!
Yo awesome video. I have a question though... What is (in your opinion) the #1 at home espresso machine that is pretty affordable like this one?
Very informative, I also own the breville and which is weird using fresh medium roast and using 18g and yield usually 37g and extraction time is between 25-28 but it taste sour any advice please
Super interesting video!

Hi , when do we actually start the timer?
First drop or once we push button? Thanks
Nice job!
I am trying to get into espresso and I was wondering what beans you suggest.
What about the breville barista pro!?? Can some of these tips also apply that machine
Do you start timing the extraction when you hit the button or when you see the coffee start coming out when tracking time?
Do you have a link to the scale you used in this video?
What about turning on the hot water at the beginning? The instructions say to do that before making espresso
The machine is really good but There is a big problem with the machine, but you can fix it.

also, when do i press the timer button on the scale? should i clock the moment i press the double shot button, or should it be pressed only when liquid begins to extrude?
Do we also have to program for the 1 shot button or it it technically already programmed in by itself?
I continue to get bad pressure even after playing around with the coarse vs fine measurement. Very frustrating. Any idea why? Are you using the double basket? I want high pressure.
This is the math they say we didn’t need in school
When do you start timing the roast? Is it when I press the double shot button or when liquid starts to come out? 🧐
Hellppp... please 😁
So, how much instant coffee you put in that thing?
I want it
First of all, thank you! But a question is still not answered: What‘s the ideal water amount? Depending on how ground the beans are, the amount of my espresso changes.
Any solutions for a shot running quickly, even at the finest grind size and 18gms of coffee?
Most likely the Beans are too old. Try to buy freshly roasted beans and always avoid buying in the stores since they never have a roast date and are old most of the time. There are plenty of videos about this topic if you are further interested.
Thank you. Great content. No 💩😉.
18 grams of coffee on what size aftermarket basket? 18g 20g 22g or 25 grams?
I have been following your advice but the extraction time is very short? And i can’t get it to extract 36g of liquid (using 18g of coffee). Any advice? I have set the grinder size to 4
how the hell do you tell the difference between sour and bitter coffee :/
People, if you’re just starting, please head the advice of “use fresh coffee beans”. Only buy stuff that has the actual roast date on it. I got a new one a week ago and it’s just hot garbage. Had to replace one several years old and this new one’s shit did they dumb it down?
I have this I can’t keep the volume size on mine. Then I get coffee delivered seems to lose its pressure cause getting old.
10g for a single shot espresso is definitely too much. If you need that much is because you are probably grinding the coffee too coarse
I just got my Sage Barista Express and the machine looks great. But even with everything dialed in (18g coffee, 36g yield, 25-30s) it just tastes extremely sour. Beans are medium roast and were roasted 2 weeks ago. Can anybody help me? :(
Wait, did he mean to say ‘silky milky’ at 7:14 😅
When you're talking about the ratio , you mean about a single dose of espresso?
Ratio 1:2 means you put 18grams of coffee (in case of a double shot) in your basket and expect 36grams of liquid to be in your cup. In case of a single shot you put 10grams of coffee into the basket and expect 20grams of liquid in your cup.
@@leonknte Yeah I figured ,thanks though for the clarification.I never gave any attention to the ratio before seeing this video and I always followed the 1:3 ratio as it is the one that many coffee shops use here in Greece.
But how do I make cheddar cheese latte using this?
Constant value, not variable
🤯
After all shit, useful content starts at 5:36
Just buy specialty coffee for 55 euros for 320gr, gatcha
In short: Just return the machine and get a real one. 😊
First!
Nice :)
