  • when we like something, all the cons are pros. But if we don't like it, the pros are totally irrelevant. This video is about me looking for an excuse to buy...... or not to buy a Makina Plaubel !!!
But whatever the outcome is, I'm serious about the handling of a camera, it really is my priority over pixels. If the pixel is the only thing I care about, i'd be using the Large Format cameras instead.

The background music distracts from the content of your video.

Don't treat the Makina 67 camera like a titanium DSLR! Always set the focus to infinity before you retract the bellows and NEVER jerk the extension of bellows with a thrust movement to extend the lens....big mistake!, you will break the cable that connects the light meter to the lens.... You say you borrowed this camera from a friend.... well give it back immediately!

The music nearly makes this unwatchable, had to watch it with subtitles on and muted.
Also dont treat the camera like a hacksaw

Funny thing the Makina was made by Mamiya (the tell-tale rounded frame corners and of course the film spool studs mechanism is the same as in Mamiya 7). If you decide on the Makina, get the 670 model, it has a few small upgrades, e.g. the advance lever is two-stroke instead of one-stroke as in 67. The reason apparently was that the one-stroke mechanism had a higher gear ratio (obviously) and some people would break it by rough handling. Also keep in mind the light meter in the Makina is FAPP a _spot_ meter, it's extremely accurate but it takes some getting used to (as in being able to pick an 18% gray object in any given landscape on command :-) ). Its battery lasts forever, it must have been like 15 years for me so far. Its lens is fantastic, the bokeh is pure silk (unlike that of the Bessa III which looks pretty ugly if you ask me, not as bad as catadioptric but halfway there).

thanks for your valuable info. Thing is, I prefer using the Mamiya 7 more, so I have decided to save myself a good few bucks

I love Mamiya 7 too (don't own it but rented it several times), esp. its 43mm lens. A camera repairman I know says they are both equally difficult to fix if anything goes wrong so no preference there :-)

Never push the lens back when the focus is not at infinity!!!

Not To Buy: Apart from the limits and problems others have mentioned, the big failure on these cameras is a poorly designed shutter release cable which is guaranteed to fail after a given number of open/close cycles. Expensive to repair. A wonderful camera when everything is working, but also the official "hanger queen" of the 6x7 camera set. For a fixed lens 6x7 rangefinder camera, top quality and modern enough to be repairable, consider the Fuji GWS670, in either 90mm or 65mm versions (much cheaper than a Mamiya 7 if you don't need multiple lenses).

If you prize the Makina's portability, the Fuji GF(?)670, a recent 6x7 folder, also sold as a Voigtlander model, protects the camera when folded, had all of the features of the Makina and a few more. With the absurd prices the MAKINa has been getting, the Fuji, new or mint, is about the same price. If you want something like this to use, the Fuji/Voigtlander is the far better choice.

A very nice and informative video. It helps me make a choice. Pity that especially the Mamiya is so expensive….. 😢!

You should definitely get the Makina 67. If you print in the darkroom, you will see the benefit of a medium format camera. The Makina allows you to photograph with the ease and mobility of a Leica, giving you the best of both worlds.

I prefer the Fujifilm GW series more because the lens is sharper and the build is much stronger. This is a beautiful piece of kit but no camera will make you a better photographer.
