- Juwn has always been surrounded by music. At age four, it was common for his older sister to keep him up at night, teaching him how to sing a variety of songs. Growing up in Ottawa’s south side, he took piano lessons, and naturally branched out to composing RnB music. Performing original songs by his late teens.
Self-professed to be “all about vibe,” Juwn’s songwriting process starts with a mood or feeling. Next, building the instrumentals with several under-the-radar producers. Then, finally placing the lyrics in a smooth melody with his unique voice and raw delivery. His style takes the old school feel and updates it to mix well with modern playlists, without being a nostalgia or tribute act. Lyrically, he is inspired by the friends and family around him, and especially “the women I’ve encountered in my life...I’m grateful for them, they help shape me.”

Juwn | 28 Moments of Black Canadian History | Oscar Peterson Black History month piano player
I appreciate you covering this wonderful musician. A couple of other things about him: he wasn't just a star in Canada - for decades he was considered probably the leading jazz pianist in the world and played and recorded with all the biggest names in jazz. But his Canadian roots remained important to him - check out his album, Canadiana Suite with all the pieces dedicated to various regions of Canada. Late in life, he was a little bitter that his own country hadn't given him the recognition he deserved (a little racism there?), so it was very moving to see a Canadian Heritage Moment about him produced this year - I wish Oscar had been alive to see it.
Oscar Petterson grew up in little Burgundy, St. Henri also known as "the point". He attended Union United Church(est. 1909) in St. Henri which is a Black Church where he played piano. Little Burgundy was a black neighborhood downtown Montreal.
Oscar is perhaps the greatest jazz pianist that ever lived.
We learned a lot from this video. Thank you!
