Your Fahrenheit 451 comparison is spot on. And its happening with all sorts of things. Look at Netflix and house of cards. In an effort to distance themselves from Kevin Spacey thy have taken down the whole show. Canceling the show is one thing but erasing it from netflix when it only existed digitally is just like the book.
But going to pay video sights for gun reviews isn't the answer. The days of paid training tapes are over. Jujitsu may have a few instructors so well respected that people want to learn from the master. But look at aviation, every flight school in America used to be full of KING training tapes. Because they were the only game in town, but they were expensive, put you to sleep, and youtube didn't exist. But now if I need to explain ground effect to someone I can search a free video and one of them will be good enough to teach it for free on any computer. Plenty of other people think they are going to be the new KING and have paid for videos and no one knows about them, because without a brand like KING you'll still need a free video site to get your audience. But gun videos are more akin to porn in that, if I want to see a little information on a gun etc there will always be something short, amateur, and free that gets the information across. No one ever really needs to pay for the full length video unless you are really weird. Your stuff won't be stolen it just won't be viewed there will be other free videos/forums/reviews to get information from.
Patreon might be the way to go but in the end not every youtube channel can get a monthly donation. These are the days we are cutting the cable because prices are ridiculous. But if every one paid a few dollars to every channel that had a couple good videos it would quickly be as much as the satellite bill.

Is anonymity ruining the comment sections? I don't think so, especially if you've came from a different era of internet, before it went so mainstream that every device in your pocket could access it. People back in the days of dial-ups and bulletin-boards knew that there were loads of false (sometimes ignorance, sometimes pranks), and the ownness was on the user to figure out what's right or wrong, and sort through muck to find diamonds. Same with the imageboards of today - Walls and walls of crap, and sometimes outright insulting comments, but occasionally you find something insightful. The beauty of that anonymity in relation to comments, especially in today's culture, is that your skin colour, religion, sexual orientation doesn't matter, all that matters is the content of what you post.
Yea, the paywall thing will never work out. Masterclass tried that, videos gets leaked as soon as the videos are up. They are still in business because obviously enough fans of those artists are devoted, but they are clearly losing quite a bit of money. Nowadays, you have to run a different model, and social media engagements becomes important. If people want to pirate your stuff, they will. It becomes more of a game of making the customer feel good about paying you money.
I think the music producer Deadmau5 is pretty spot on with this - You need to make people "like you" as a person and feel that they want to support you, offer rewards that are non-transferrable (or so good/personal they don't want to, or can't), so that they buy your content, become a subscribing patron, etc.
2:01:00 Daddy Garand's got a pretty good gig going on there, even if he doesn't know it yet. Fans call you names, run with it, embellish it, harness it. As long as he stick to his principals, and doesn't sell out to gear companies, he will have a loyal subscriber base who will grow his channel for him, support him and buy his merch (the shirts, belts, etc). There's a lot of kids out there that want to be "men", but due to today's environment (and political climate) that couldn't happen, so they idolise people like Daddy Garand, people they want to be, and in the extreme cases, people they wanted their father to be (cool-dad-you-never-had vibe).
2:34:15 Try looking at things from the perspective of an average youtube viewer. A lot of people will watch the part 1 or the video and not the subsequent parts, not always out of laziness, but due to the fact that part 2 isn't in of the recommended videos, especially with "one-off" viewers. Some people "ghost/lurk" youtube channels, they watch your content somewhat regularly, but they don't subscribe, they don't commit because the general theme of the channel is not to their liking (or you simply don't make enough videos), and they don't go out of their way to watch all your videos. I do that a lot with many gun and bushcraft youtube channels, especially those that do a lot of content I have no interest in. Remember, youtube is not like TV where you are forced to sit though it, it's one big pick and choose, and the fast forward button is always on.

Tremulousnut +Tremulousnut there is some serious lack of accountability going on and a lot of bad info being purposely spread.
We work against that bad info but we are greatly outnumbered.

    • @Tremulousnut
      @Tremulousnut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Can't ask for "accountability" on the internet, and we should be very careful when we do, because our internet freedoms are being restricted as we speak (enjoy it while it lasts). That anonymity is a double edge sword, but nevertheless a valuable tool much like the Second Amendment. The only real thing you could (and should do), is flush out bad information with good ones, using a way that will spread it wide - Making your videos entertaining/palatable is a start, nobody could resist good jokes, which is why Garand Thumb is so popular among the kids.

I dont know if you Content Creators are reading all these comments or not. But I kinda feel like even though TH-cam is a private company or started out that way. But I think a very very strong argument could be made that TH-cam has Become The Biggest Public Forum in the world & I really think as crazy hard as it would be I think it could be argued possibly even legally that it is now a public forum & freedom of speech must apply & must be protected because it has turned into basically a monopoly that is so big it's almost unstoppable at this point so the rules need 2 be changed to reflect the new paradigm. Idk exactly how this battle could be fought but I really think it is a big deal that does really matter

I sympathise entirely with the demonetisation/censorship thing, but I'm surprised that no-one ever brings up that you are playing in THEIR sandbox that they fund through their advertisers (who are the ones driving this are they not?). IRL example; if you were holding meetings in a bar and bringing legally held firearms to discuss, and the bar owner decided they didn't like guns, they could stop you bringing them or ban you entirely. We are here on their sufferance, so I'm not sure why anyone is surprised that the corporate new media is any more permissive than the corporate old media.
Oh and [edit] the parallel to Fahrenheit 451 is a little askew; TH-cam/Google are not the government. You have rights under a democratic government (in theory at least). You have none when you're dealing with a corporation, unless they are in breach of the laws of a nation.

I think this podcast has hit many points that I have been recently seeing amongst the bigger guntuber people. I don't know if youguys heard about all this, but TheYankeeMarshall has been calling out a lot of people due to the recent Las Vegas incident and the NRA debacle. He had some points about the TheGunCollective's roundtable being quite.... Well in my words, a bit chaotic in the discussions. The live chat and the comments were just like what Mike(AKA Garand Thumb) and Karl mentioned. Lots of people just using the word shill and invalidating everyone else by using very weak arguments. Some were solid and logical concerns, but most were pretty much what Mike and Karl mentioned with people using the "easy argument" and shifting the burden of proof on other commentators.
Matt or anyone who has seen and heard about this, what are your thoughts on all this. It feels a bit... I don't know how to say for sure, but a bit crazy for lack of the better word from seeing all this in-fighting. MAC (AKA Tim) was pretty solid and logical in the roundtable discussion, imo.

+tuck234 I have trust in Karl and I have been taking precautions as he has advised. We are due to broaden our methods of distribution.
I don't follow the other channels. I am cautious with whom we associate, trust, or listen to.
This also can just be a big hype machine.

Primary & Secondary true. I definitely understand. It's just pretty crazy and almost gave me a sense of we were gonna be really divided very badly in this which could be my own ill placed paranoia. Lol
Appreciate the quick response and appreciate all you and the panelist on P&S do for the firearms community. I'll be sure to always keep a skeptical outlook at what I watch as far as popular guntubers go.
      THANKS P&S \m/

Primary & Secondary oh and Karl is definitely my favorite person on InRangeTV. Ian is really cool too, but I feel I could really talk with Karl in person since I also worked in a field with computers and information maintenance and also find his humor hilarious. XD
Okay, sorry for fangirling there. Sorry Karl. I am not a stalker, swear. 😳

tuck234 Karl in person is the same Karl on the internet. We call each other enough that my phone has him listed as "frequently contacted"

I'm @33mins now and can tell you a thing or two from my perspective on how ppl see them - as a gun pro, person involved in shooting sports and a dude who watches TH-cam, including shooting channels for longer than a while.
Everybody loves Forgotten Weapons and InRangeTV. Just because. They rock. ASP IMO sucks and if you notice, only he talks big game about YT and FB numbers, although he just ever watched gunfights, thinking that analysis is everything. I can appreciate analysis but there is a base needed if you wanna be an authority on Use of Force. Take a look at his beefs with ppl who were actually in gunfights, Like Rick from Think Like a Cop (and get Rick on the show). And how he sucked up to YT magicians like Zero. GarandThumb is kinda too modest, he established a quite significant presence online. Well, he did called himself, prolly humorously, Travis Haley's son. That was kinda a drag. I'm OK with him on most of the stuff, like his "If you ever..." - find it funny. He can talk his guns and trousers but gets sponsorship like that one with Gerber and that kinda fucks him. Because ppl in the know can see thru that. Like thru John Lovell's and Sage Dynamics sudden love for Streamlight. We are not retarded.
Will watch the rest of the show now.

It’s funny how at this time we used to call Lucas out and now he’s shown proof and even shot with some of these guys and they can validate his skill just how he sets his cameras and everything up made it look fake.

Primary & Secondary not as often now I should say, I know Mike and Tony cowden alongside some other pretty popular guys in the gun world have shot with him and he seems a lot more legit now than back in the day for sure. I haven’t watched all your guys podcasts yet but you guys should have him on I think that you guys video stuff aside could really put out some good knowledge together.

Karl is right when he said ART. socrates and Plato knew as does youtube and those who control youtube. That art has to be controlled as it influences the masses. I could go on about this for a few paragraphs. Art back in greece music and stories and plays aka entertainment was called ART. I am not going to go into circles and true trues and philosophical bs as that is what it is bs. Check it out . It plays into what's happening today. Check it out. Panteo could nip it in the bud by making the dvd a little more affordable. As they would sell more copies.

Dude I love InRange, but last time I was on their discord it was the most cancerous, elitist keyboard warrior forum I've been on.

    • @InrangeTv
      @InrangeTv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I'm on the Discord here and there, but I certainly am not on there hours a day - because I can't be. I haven't seen what you're describing, but obviously the users make the forum whatever it's going to be. I hope that's not the common perception of the Discord, and it's not what I see when I'm on there, but I am sorry to hear about your experience. ~Karl

InRangeTV it was undue hyperbole, apologies.
      1. I haven't been on a lot of gun forums
      2. I base my opinion off of a limited number of engagements with the regulars on the discord
      3. I don't support you and Ian based on your discord crowd, I support you guys because you're my liaison to what I consider the intelligent gun community.
Keep doing what you're doing, my man.
