    So, wallowing in the past or future is unhelpful and often toxic - especially when your thoughts are negative. Even imagining a positive future outcome takes you too much out of the present. But thinking about the past and future in practical, neutral terms, like reflecting on valuable lessons from the past, or planning and preparing for a future event, is very worthwhile. Does that sound about right?

Why should we shut off our emotions like worry or excitement? Life is lived in our emotions. It sounds like this guy is promoting being an android that takes in observstions only in the now. I feel like I lose the present moment to some extent when I think about the future at all. Like even if i just think, oh next week I'm going to do this, I'll feel a slight bad feeling inside myself and I won't feel present. It seems for me I have to not have anything planned ever again.

      This is how I've been feeling too. As aware as I can be, in presence, it seems when I think about what I've planned to do, there is a little discomfort. Maybe I don't have that energy at the time the event comes...I guess then, we do the best we can, allow ourselves to learn. Listen to the teachings, but allow your own being to develop.

    • @anz10
      @anz10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Observe that discomfort like an outsider don't judge it and then you'll be able to do things despite it and in time that discomfort will disappear. If you try to resist the discomfort or don't face it it'll always come up again. It's just your mind trying to find an 'in' to take you away from the present moment. Just observe it and it'll pass, it's about deeply accepting it but not engaging with the reactive mind.

    One thing I don't agree with entirely, is the notion that if you imagine yourself in the future that you lose presence. I think we can consciously use imagination to make an image more vivid, I see it just as another way to think.
    If we didn't imagine ourselves in the future, i would infer that a lot of innovation that we have, may not have transpired.
    The key is to let go of what you imagined once you imagine it, for if at that point you hold on the presence is lost.

    I bring the future into the now. As Neville says. Then live in the state. As time is an illusion. So your future self exists now anyway. So you’re still enjoying your lunch, walk, environment. Live in the end. And then live every day in the present moment.

    • @monicaellefseth6804
      @monicaellefseth6804 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but also, if you loose your job you will probably feel sadness, anger and all sort of emotions! Acknowledge those feelings without adding thoughts to them i.e. «off course I lost my job, I´m useless!» Then you accept what is. Stuff WILL happen in this world, and by accepting our emotions about them, without adding thoughts, we can deal consciosly with the situation.

      For yourself or everyone on TH-cam? Would have been more funny if it didn't hinge on a time and culture specific detail. The banal nature of your gender based contemplation is supposed to contrast with the sincerity of people who care to meditate "well". Maybe if you directed the comment at the specific aspect of yourself that has this uncontrollable urge to mentally hone in on these proxies for intimacy, but it's not about that, it's about the feeling of power in being in a position of appraising a human being by compartmentalising them according to metrics that undergird traditional masculinity, aka thinking with dick. Thanks for the classic example of bro humor. I know it's shocking there's more to guessing bra size (although you date yourself. A) lots of girls don't wear bras now and b) circumference/size/something that used to stand in for a representation of worth, like guys and tallness or status or whatever, are no longer intrinsic qualifiers. Now that I live not in suburbia im exposed to a much broader idea of attractiveness but I feel sorry for girls who are still there and don't have access to other mindsets. //So I feel compelled to add to the dialogue, since this is a public arena I assume you made the comment for some reason not to yourself as you said twice.// your comment does have influence and that brand of appeal to lowest common denominator guilty thoughts have enough legacy to easily trigger a nostalgic appreciation for someone who says it "like it is" except it isn't, but seems like it to people who believe what they believe are facts about the world, not arbitrary cultural buildup absorbed by membership in the dominant social group.
      Wow imagine if as a girl I said something like... "Fighting the urge to imagine the size of..." Some underwears (Calvin Klein boxer briefs to be exact) do have that brassiere architecture now to give the guys a little shape so yknow it's all hard to tell these days....."
      Hey, baby steps. It's cool. Not going to play mean feminist. I took scientific interest in this comment which clearly means I'm in a bubble so I got to play out that thought experiment.
