Mini Excavator For Birthday - PowerFab 125 WTD

  • Over a year ago I received this made in Great-Britain PowerFAB 125 WTD MINI, or I would even go so far that I'd say a MICRO excavator as a birthday present from my father who rescued it from being hauled into the scrap steel company. It is clapped out and not very well maintained, but hey, it cost 150€ which is a reasonable price for something like that in the condition that it is in right now. The plan with this machine is to re-bore and recondition all the moving joints while checking the operation of the zerk fittings and the condition of some of the welding that has been done on this excavator to bring it back to a proper working order. I expect it to be a great helper on the homestead and just as big as needed. Okay, it could be always bigger but hey, it'll do the job IMHO. I also want to make tracks for it because as you can see in the video it gets a lot of wheel spin. I didn't stretch the boom out to get it nose heavy, that's true, but still, it could use some more grip and replacing those front paws with a single blade would be an idea so I could level the dirt after it has been excavated, too. But let's see how that'll work out. Thanks for watching and see you next time! Cheers!

    Now thats the sort of restoration I like to see , personally I would have that running and moving like a swiss watch , doing all the work myself , and it would be earning its keep , not sitting around pristine to be admired . Excellent mini excavator . Looking forward to viewing the rebuild . And re-use .

    Happy Birthday, my kindred soul! One word...plans!!!! Actually, three words...plans, beverage holder!!!
    I, instantantly, thought of a million uses for this little dream machine. The most important one is spending three times the cost to build one myself instead of actually buying one just to aggravate my beautiful bride when I tell her I "need" it to finish all the chores she has for me on her "honey do" list.

    That's an early 125WTD built around 1985. You had to transfer the drive wheels and motors to the rear wheel position to tow it. They were quite heavy. In 1986 they had motors that would free wheel and allowed you to tow the machine with the drive motors in place. A brilliant machine at the time.

    I used to run a 125wtd years ago ..... a great digger in the day ... you have the Honda engine on that one we had the kubota diesel on ours it also had a roll bar , sadly the company lost a lot of ground by 96 they couldn’t compete with the efficient machinery that was being produced in other countries and got bought out first by lifton and then taken over by neuson which effectively discontinued the 125 they also had A smaller track version of it , it was purposed mainly towards utility , water , gas, electric companies digging up roads ..... it was a great machine with the ability to remove the drive wheels to get through a 2ft gap and drag /pull with the bucket difficult areas, check out history of powerfab on TH-cam give a complete overview, the company has been reregistered by the original owners son so sourcing components should be easy enough now, lol used to sell for about 4k

      To pay for the repairs that need to be done would have cost more than it is worth. Donn doing the work himself changes the equation a little and he clearly likes doing the work and will make a little money on the side from the videos.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It was used commercially when digging electric cable trenches. But the workers only dug and probably never actually maintained this digger in the company it was bought from. And usually when the exploitation period (around 5 years) is over these things are sold "as is" and gotten rid of ASAP to make room for new diggers.

    Adding tracks will be a great idea but you might need a wider door on the shed for it then.
    I can just imagine the ideas in your head for the future of your “excavator”. Maybe even the possibility that it might still dig dirt.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can set the front wheels narrower. There's a removable pin system on the front which makes it able to change the axle track.

  • @stuartcraigon2003
    @stuartcraigon2003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Donn, I think you should modify this and use it as the crane on your log trailer instead of the winch.
    You could weld or bolt the front of the trailer to the rear of the digger and then tow the complete thing with your Quad.
    Might be stronger, better and more stable than the winch crane.
    Just a thought.

  • @herbiemitchell9156
    @herbiemitchell9156 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    These were a great little machine made in Tredegar in Wales before the advent of the tracked mini excavator. This one was a later model with powered drive at the front wheels. The earlier model was walked around with the bucket on the narrow rear wheels. They were available with a variety of bucket widths as well as a special grave digging bucket which was able to dig a much squarer hole for coffins to rest comfortably. The company that built these used to do sub-contract steel fabrication for Hitachi and when that contract ended they developed their own little machines.

    • @V8PropaneBurner

    When you put a heavy bucket on the stick you will get better traction. And it doesn’t seem to have too much play in the bushings. One real upgrade on the powerfab machines is a double hydraulic pump. It is much easier to use if you have that. If you put tracs on it you won’t be able to transport it on the tow bar of your ATV as easily. My neighbor has a powerfab on tracs that I used some this summer, here is a link to some film. Regards Nils.

      I was thinking the same thing. Also the tires in the front are pumped up too much I think, should let some air out to create a bigger contact patch to the ground.

    • @NilsKall
      @NilsKall 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donn DIY The tires did look overinflated, perhaps lower the pressure and ad som window washing fluid to ad weight. Wheel weights (a easy project for you) could make a big difference too.
      As someone said, use it as it was supposed to work and then make changes to it. I often find that what I think needs to be “fixed” is not the biggest problem when I start using a machine. Best regards Nils
