- Hauling, processing and storing firewood. As a result of my laziness in firewood chopping, splitting and stacking by hand I spent a couple of months building a firewood processor around a 7 tonne capacity electric log splitter, a belt conveyor and forks attachment for the micro skid steer loader so I can move around the IBC - Intermediate Bulk container crates that are, as of now, full of firewood successfully made on my homemade firewood processor. No more back bending firewood chopping with a handheld chainsaw or splitting wood with a regular axe. Nor the most annoying thing to my liking - firewood stacking. As someone said in the comments, and very spectacularly I might add, people go through a lot of trouble and work to be lazy afterwards. And it's true.

I watched this processed being built step by step. I watched you strive for perfection sometimes tearing something apart and completely re building it. The machine works perfect and reflects your skills. Thanks for this series.

Still hard to believe that entire processor started with just a little electric log splitter and I watched the entire build series.

I admire your creativity and talents to bring your ideas all together. This is what America is all about - being free to dare to go where others dare not - re-invent the wheel, build a better mousetrap, and manufacture a great firewood processor. BRAVO! Your next challenge might be how to overcome muddy fields and trails!

need to build a larger out door wood boiler that will heat shop and the home and burn 4 too 6 foot logs ... then also that would save some time in the fire wood work ,, i hate stacking wood .. you got a great system going .. great video ..

That 'small stuff' that gets screened out makes great fire starters!
Okay, good modification of the exit (it can serve as a barbecue!). All that is missing is a small basket for sawdust from the chainsaw and a collection of chips between the output of the firewood machine and the conveyor! Good job once again!

A grapple for your skid steer to use on your forks would be very useful. Then you could replace the log lift with a chain-drive feed table. That would reduce the manual labor of loading logs and allow several to be staged on the table to be split next.
Regardless, it's always great to see someone that's not afraid of work getting things done.

Compressed crushed concrete makes a great walkway surface.
That's the plan. And there's more old concrete coming from the broken barn floor I plan on removing and replacing anyway. 😉

Smart is the man that makes his own things !! When I split my firewood I always have little small pieces I bag them in a breathable canvas type bag and use them to start my wood burner or just ad them in with the regular firewood, Bark as well. Also I was watching you ad a log to the firewood processor I thought of something that might make another video for you and help you out and save your back . You could make something to put on the arms that lift the log up on top of the firewood processor. Then use that same motion and use it to push the log into the firewood processor make these pieces removable so you could take them off and still use the feet that lift the log on to the firewood processor if that makes any sense. Great video as always !!
Although I can appreciate the necessity of your comment about not littering, I'm thinking only someone very new to this channel might say something like that. Donn, you have salvaged, repurposed and found use for things most of us either would have trashed or disregarded all the time. That you would keep the concrete bust out is just what you do- and when the "planned" crusher" makes it's appearance, that old barn floor will become driveway, or other useful surface on the farm. It is, after all what you are and do. Please note, even though you built the really spiffy cutting and splitting machine, you load the smaller stuff completely by hand, only using the log lifter for the really back breakers. You seem to waste nothing- something most of us need to work much harder at. Do your thing- it's good for us all! Hope your grandpa is still hanging in there and watching you take his inspiration and old shop to the next level! FR

Would you consider to make plans available when you finish the build of the crusher? I live on a farm similar to yours and I would love to crush my own rocks to gravel for using on my road and stuff
Very cool! You could make a shaking / vibrating machine either under or beside the crate so it would vibrate the wood down and make it fit better in the crate.

Necessity is the mother of invention, my father and I loved watching this! Makes me want to fire up my log splitter too, but the oak and ash around here can be beefy to split.
You could add a hydraulic ram and gas power as well to the electric saw. Frankly, it could all be gas if you ran a hydraulic saw, but I like how inexpensive his electric saw is in contrast. Two separate systems...one hydraulic one the saw could work fine. If you used a generator engine, you could actually work it to provide the power for the system if you added a transfer case.

@@DonnDIY isn't it always the way, it's not till you have used something like this for more than a few hours you can see , if not faults, at least, ways it can be further improved , your chip grate is too well made, if only tacked together it would not have taken much to remove 2 of every 3 bars. Place a box under the grate, and this will supply your tinder fire starter

If only you knew a guy who could fabricate some tracks for that skid loader...
And add some counter weight on the back... Been looking some DIY method to make counter weights since some asshat stole 4/6 weights we had. 30kg for each makes pretty penny on scrap metal market it seems.

I think I've watched all your videos and the fire wood processor is one of my favorites. At the time I watched this video there was 23 thumbs down so the question is, would these people be happy or positive about anything in their life? My guess is no.
An idea for the firewood processor Adjust the exit floor of wood from flat to less descending...

Have you ever thought "Am I mad"? How much weight have you added to the log splitter just to avoid a little clearing up? I completely understand why you spend time and money 'tidying up the system' because I do the same (on a smaller scale) and my whole family think I'm as mad as a hatter. We call it "Bremnerising" when I spend ages improving bought tools and devices. Great vids Donn, I don't care how mad you are (or seem), I'll still watch you! Looks like it is about time for a forest harvester / forwarder combo.
I think you could cut out a few more steps by making several firewood trailers with solid tires (no flats to bother with) to store the 2.5m logs on. You can load them up and leave them in the woods until you are ready to process them.
Thats a great grate, cleaning up that small stuff can really grate on you.
