Orchid keiki Vs. new growth

  • Since we were talking about Orchids with too many keikis, here is a video about the difference between a keiki and what we call a new growth on an orchid.
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
    A keiki is a baby plant created by an already mature, or close to mature orchid. It is by all means a stand alone plant that will produce all the structures necessary to live on its own when detached from the mother plant, given enough time to develop. Monopodial orchids such as Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Angraecum and Sedirea can produce keikis either from the axis, or from the flower spikes (Phalaenopsis case).
    Sympodial orchids produce new pseudobulbs periodical as part of their growth pattern. A pseudobulb is not a stand alone plant, but rather another structure that forms an entire plant. Separated it cannot develop normally, if at all, as it depends on the mother plant and is connected to its growth. orchids like Cattleya, Gongora, Maxillaria and Oncidiums do not produce keikis, or at least it is extremely rare to see one. Some Sympodials however do produce keikis, such as Dendrobiums, Tolumnias, Psychopsis.
    Here are some videos on growth patterns of several orchids:
    Oncidium • Growth stages of Oncid...
    Cattleya • Growth stages of Cattl...

    What about a video specific to caring for a phalaenopsis orchid that is growing a keiki on one stalk? My phalaaenopsis orchid developed a keiki late last fall. It does not have roots yet and I understand that could take 2 years. In the meantime do I cut the other flower stalk that just dropped it's last flower. And, during this time do I refrain from repotting? I have somehow managed to keep this orchid alive for SEVERAL years despite having no clue what I was doing. Now that I have found your site I know what I'm doing and I am so grateful. I would like to be able to get the keiki to a point where I can remove it and pot it and give it to my daughter. She purchased this orchid for me several Mother's Day ago. Seems like a great circle to complete. Thank you so much for your videos they are extremely helpful!!!

One of them gave 2 keiki, later died (I think that is my problem with watering), but now the other orchid also produces keiki! Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong if everyone produces keikis? They bloomed, flowering lasted almost 5 months, beautiful. And now keikis :(

    Hi Danny, I have a phalaenopsis which has a new growth halfway up its stem, between two leafs of the main stem and no roots of its own but clearly it is a new plant with a stem of its own. Should I cut it off the mother plant and try to have it develop roots of its own and what are its chances of survival ? Thanks Danny.

    Hi Danni! Thank you so much for making this video. I do have another question now, though. LOL. My mini phaeleonopsis is growing/has sprouted a keiki. Is that a good thing or does it take away from the original plant? Also, how do I know when it is time to separate the two, and how do I do that without harming either?
    Thank you again, I love your videos.
    Tracy (Canada)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tracy, well one or even 2 keikis are ok on one orchid, they should develop ok while the mother plant will grow normally (if she is healthy). More than that could become problematic and producing keikis every year again keeps the orchid from fully recovering.

    Hi Danny. I have a dendrobium nobile with 2 keikis, they only have aerial roots. The plant also has these little green bulbs (not sure if it’s flower bulbs). One keiki produced a flower but it dried out. The problem is I should really change the medium, I’m afraid it’s infected with those little flies. I’m not sure if I should separate the keikis they look very good now on the mother plant. It’s one of my first orchids (I already killed one unfortunately) so I’m just learning now from the beginning from your videos. Your videos are brilliant and they turn mistery into sense so it’s great help, thank you. I will try to paste few pictures here of my plant,not sure if it will work.

    I have a phal that has a little baby looking plant growing beside it. I am not too sure if it is a baby or a new growth but it doesn't seem to be attached to the stem of the mother plant. I have been thinking of repotting this particular orchid but so scared that if the little plant is indeed another orchid growing, I might kill it.

  • @craig6903
    @craig6903 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Danni, I have been encouraging my phal to produce a keki, after all of my flowers fell off. I placed keki paste on a node. However it grew a flower branch instead. But the first node on the branch grew a leaf. Wanting my orchid to focus on the keki, I cut the flower branch so it could grow better. And the leaf is growing and getting bigger. Just the one leaf right now. However my orchid seem to determine to grow more flowers. It has created another flower stem connected to the leaf. I really don't want my orchid to get too stressed out growing a keki a flower spike and a leaf on the mother plant. Is this behavior normal and should just let the orchid do what she wants or should I intervene somehow?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Craig, well as far as I've seen from other people using the keiki paste, it doesn't always induce keikis, actually maybe 50% of the times or less. It can induce indeed other spikes and some people even had deformed spikes. I think you should let this one do what it wants and if you want try the paste on a different orchid :)

    I have this theory in my head (which means unproven), that all "keikis" and "new growths" are homologous structures and developed their differences through divergent evolution; they have a common origin. And perhaps monopodial orchids are just sympodial orchids that have selected (through time) to produce fewer and fewer "new growths" and many of them just have that part of the gene turned off. #Ishouldreallyspendmoretimeactuallyworkingthandaydreaming

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Trac, well I don't think you are that far from the truth, there has to have been a common ancestor at some point before all the diversity, but I am not sure which one was first, the monopodal or sympodial :P that's a good topic to research thanks!

    I have a den phal I've been struggling with. When I bought it in February all its roots were desicated so I cut them off, and it still hasn't grown any. But one cane produced 2 basal keikis which look great. Another cane has an available eye at the base which hasn't done anything and a keiki came out of the top, in between the leaves, where a flower spike should have grown. I let this go for awhile, but then that cane started losing its leaves, until there was only one left. So I removed that keiki and potted it. The leaf is still left, so I'm glad I removed the keiki. However, I'm having trouble keeping this keiki moist enough. I know it was probably too young to remove, but it had good roots and I was worried for it and the mother plant that its growth at the top of the cane would kill them both. Any suggestions on how I can save this baby plant? Also, the mother plant still has no roots, and the leaf on the cane I was talking about is actually the only leaf the entire plant has left. Do you think it will recover? Or is it pretty much just an energy source for the keikis at this point?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, sorry to hear about your dendrobium, it's hard to tell how depleted he is so as long as there s still some green to it (even without leaves) let it be, it might start to grow when he is ready. If not, no worries, it just happens and it will teach you something new for the future. About the keiki, using loose sphagnum moss might help it stay moist for longer, what medium are you using now?

    • @jessicahinman1338

      Hi, well it's not uncommon for Phalaenopsis :) a spike in the middle of the crown is called a terminal spike, it usually means that the orchid cannot grow anymore leaves, but it will try to produce a keiki, either on a spike, either basal. Leaves on spikes are not uncommon either, they are undeveloped keikis, but I bet the orchid will try to make a keiki somewhere due to the terminal spike :)

    Hi Danny, I have a problem with my orchid. A year ago my new leaf had grown through the old one (it ripped apart the middle of the old leaf) and it couldn't develop properly. So I decided to cut both the leafs out. After a while some new growth started to develope between two leafs. I thought it was a keiki but now I'm not sure. It looks like it couldn't be separated from the mother plant (it is connected to the mother plant with a whole surface not just some stem that could be cut off). Where can I send you photos? My fiance and I raid the trees in search of dying orchids from construction sites, roads, cut trees etc. and rescue them. We recently rescued a huge phalaenopsis that seems to have fallen from a tree as it was still attached to a branch piece. It has 4 leaves, one yellowing, another detached 1/2 from the base but looks alive (and is actually the bigger leaf) and 2 more leafs that are missing half (seemingly eaten by a bug) it has an underdeveloped spike and seems to be growing a new leaf. Care to assist on how I could help her heal? I simply cleaned the rotten roots and covered them with plastic wrap (with holes) and placed it in a plastic basket (similar to laundry basket but smaller) I don't wanna remove the half detached leaf as it seems still alive and is the only leaf that is complete, if it wasn't half detached from the base that is. Thanks!

    I heard that a keiki is a mature plant in miniature size, so they may produce flowers in a year, in the opposite of a baby orchid that may take years to reach maturity and flower. Is that true?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, well.. yes and no :) a keiki benefits from water and nutrients from the mother orchid, so it grows faster and it blooms faster yes. A seedling needs to go through all growth stages alone, with no help from any mother plant, and that takes a much longer time. Also a keiki doesn't have to grow from a minuscule seed indeed, so some steps are skipped ;)

    • @AismenA
      @AismenA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MissOrchidGirl How long does it take for the keiki to mature enough to be seperated from the mother, in average? I just discovered one... 😊

  • @brendamcintyre703

    Can the keiki develop from the crown of a Phal? I have one that started growing what I thought was just new leaf growth that was small due to set back, but it grew multiple small leaves very quickly. Now it is developing roots from one leaf below the crown. Could this be a keiki? It appears as if I could separate this growth from the rest of the plant very easily and it would have its own root system. If this is a keiki and I do separate it, what would happen to the "mother" plant since this came from the crown?I know that's a lot of questions. I'm new to orchid growing and had never heard of keikis (in spite of all the books I've read) until I came across your video. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. All of your videos have really helped me. Keep up the good work.

    • @whitebus2012
      @whitebus2012 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that can happen. The mother plant will unfortunately not produce any more growth, I believe, because that sounds like what's called a terminal spike. Orchids grow leaves on top of each other and once something else grows from the top of the leaves, the plant can no longer produce a new leaf. It's a natural occurrence but rare. If you haven't separated them yet, I would wait until the keiki roots are developed (as you said they might be already). Then plant it in the same pot as the mother plant until it's ready to be potted independently.

      Thanks for the feedback. I thought that might be the issue.

    You stole the idea from me hahahaha. I was planning on making a video about this very subject for my own channel.
    As you said, some orchids cn create strange things that aren't really keikis nor new growths. I've seen Prosthechea cochleata grow these things on top of the pseudobulb, just like you commented on the Oncidiums.

      No problem, you can definitely make your own video on the topic, all opinions and experiences are different :)
