John Lanigan - "Serenade" THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH (Bizet) 1965

- After success on radio, including the popular "Opera for the People" series, the Australian tenor, John Lanigan, went to London after World War Two and studied with the Italian tenor Dino Borgioli. He was soon contracted with the newly formed Covent Garden company and stayed with them for many years - initially in Principal roles then as a Comprimario singer. Here he sings Henry Smith's plaintive "Serenade" from Bizet's 1867 opera THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH (La jolie fille de Perth). Ray Leopold conducts the BBC Grand Hotel in this 1965 recording.

John & his wife stayed with us on holiday in St Ives Cornwall back in early 60s. I think his wife was called Betty. She used to do my hair up in rags overnight to make my hair curly for the next day x
He had a superb voice, which gave great pleasure.
Hi Mr Lanigan, I am curious if you by chance know if your grandfather kept any notes from his lessons with Dino Borgioli? Or ever wrote down his own vocal technique, especially regarding breath support. I am a real fan of Borgioli's, but have found nothing where he speaks of his singing technique. In listening to this present recording, one can hear Borgioli's influence, present in the beauty, lightness and liquidity of Lanigan's tone. Thank you and best wishes, Paul
