Stay clear of Jetstar my sister booked a flight from Christchurch to Auckland but had to cancel due to a death in the family but they refused a refund so she went to rebook the same flight in April and they said that'll cost and extra $260 on top of what she already paid if thats not bad I don't know what is.
I think that is with any airline. No refund if not a refundable ticket and rebooking for a fee and the difference of price. So this is common policy, not only Jetstar.
I always have a travel insurance that covers for thinks like illness and near family incidents. Doesn't cost a fortune, but might in the end safe money. And there are some credit cards that have insurance when you pay with them.
