I am a Malay from Malaysia but on my father's side, we still have close family in Patani. So close, that my father had first and second cousins that would come and visit us in Pendang, Kedah.
From what I gathered, they are not asking to be part of Malaysia. What they want is to be able to PRACTISE being a Malay (to speak Malay, to have a Malay name and to write in Jawi - a Malay script). Thailand is their country but being a Malay is what they are born with. Thai is probably their national identity but Malay is what in their heart is. In other places, you can be who you are, and still be part of the country. Similar to Chinese in Malaysia or Jamaican in the UK. But in Thailand, Malay identity was being suppressed through Siamisation (naming and preference for government jobs).
We lost extended family members in the conflict and we do mourn them.
If the Thai government stopped looking at these Malays as the "others" and started to look at them as "our Thai nationals", developed the area and embraced that multi-ethnicity and multi-cultural is something to be proud of I am sure, peace can slowly take place in these states.
Let's be clear, these states are part of Thailand. But their heart is Malay and help them and make them proud to be part of Thailand. They just want to have some economic prosperity and to live in happiness.
From us in Malaysia, we hope our extended families in Patani will always be strong.

Thanks and I would agree with you on this. Learning from Aceh for example, Indonesia (as a Muslim majority nation) conceded to give Aceh more autonomy regarding religion affairs. After failing to hold on to East Timor, a majority Catholic land with unique ethnicity. The southern Thai issue is somewhat similar to Papua issue in Indonesia. Ethnicity and religion they are closer to Papua New Guinea but ruled by majority Moslems in Jakarta.

They didn't want to be like the other Malay people of Southern Thailand such Satun (new generation), Songkhla, Krabi or even in Bangkok. Those Malay people can't speak Malay anymore and lose their Malay culture and now to be called Thai Muslim with Thai ethnicity. Not all Thai Muslim was Malay but most of them was Malay that being assimilation especially the peninsular people. Except for Yala, Narathiwat and Patani. Look the Malay people of Southern Myanmar, they still can speak Malay with Kedah Dialect and using Jawi script. Because Myanmar didn't force Malay Muslim to assimilate like Thailand.

As a Muslim, there were no problems in other parts of the country. Thailand has never prohibited anyone from practicing their own religion. However, these rioters have caused a lot of violence. The Thai people have origins in southern China, specifically from the Tai ethnic groups. They migrated southward over centuries, eventually settling in what is now Thailand and forming various kingdoms, including Sukhothai, Ayutthaya etc. This migration and cultural exchange played a significant role in the development of Thai identity. So It started very small as the Sukhothai Kingdom rebel against the Khmer Empire. In the 13th century, Sukhothai gained independence from Khmer control, asserting its sovereignty and expanding its territory. This period marked a significant shift in power in the region, as Sukhothai began to establish itself as a major kingdom in Southeast Asia and stole a lot of land from their neighbours like Malays, Khmers, Laotian, Burmese. Religion has always been a 'scapegoat' excuse for those lazy minded people. The southern thais/ northern malays are Malays by ethnic, many are muslim by faith and some are buddhists.
The problem here stems from you know who empire and the exclusion of the Malay sultans during the negotiations and half baked effort to form a 'Malay' nation state.
And thai gov policy after the bangkok agreement helped fuel the fire. No country in the region can buy fighters jets more advance than Singapore from US. The few that US govt gave the green light were refused it's sauce code !! meaning none can engage a RSAF in anger cuz the missiles will not be active. The US let Israel be in the middle of the Arab world, similarly uncle sam let Singapore be in the middle of the "Malay Muslim" area. Another example was when the Thai govt want to build a new Kra Canal across its south for shipping but was protested by Singapore and America .... anything new ? CNA is nothing but a mouthpiece for the Sing govt to show their investigation into other countries affairs. Not 20 years of conflict. 70+ years, bordering on 80.
Ever since the Sultanate of Patani was split between the British and the Siamese, the remnants stuck on the Siamese side of the cordon faced attempts of cultural genocide that begun in earnest with Plaek Phibunsongkram's Thai-ification policies.
If not for decades of cultural genocide, Wahhabi Jihadism would've never gained traction in 2000s.

Autonomy? Here, you are talking about the country that has never been colonized by the west and it has only one governing body. Thailand is different from Malaysia and Indonesia. It is not a federal state. Proposing autonomouse region is not different from seperating Thailand into two countries which may be not a big deal in Malaysia and Indonesia, but it is the redline in Thailand.

Those who ran away and didn't get prosecuted after the conflict 20 years ago should be brought to the court again. Young Patani folks themselves up to this day still brought up the ethnonationalism point . That's why PULO and BRN are still active and present to this day. Many of them still viewed Bangkok as a colonizer and occupied their land.
Imagine since year 1795, noted the downfall of Patani kingdom, they are still resilient to Thai authority until now. Malaysians are not the one sparking this ethnic nationalism thing, it is a value that Patani people uplifted by themselves.
I don't really know if the majority of Patani people want to get independence or not. But i do sense that patani young folks mostly prefer for autonomy better than independence.

Deep problem for these 3 southern provinces and some part of Songkhala not related with Thai Muslim. Most Thai people and many people in Asean don't know cause a problem. I think many Thai muslim live happily and peace in another part of Thailand. This 3 provinces and some part of Songkhala mostly or majority races namely Malay Patani. They use different language and culture. Historically they have war with Siamese empire almost since 200 year ago. They feel betrayed by the 1909 anglo siamese treaty. After world war 2 they get betrayed again by British and Thai government. Many religious teacher and leaders of Patani get killed by Siamese force. Your know Haji Sulong? He demand justice Malay patani people. He not seek directly independence from Thailand for Patani. He just ask 7 demanded right for Malay Patani people. What happen to him?. Get killed by Thai government and very unjustice to him. Since 2004 Takbai masscre new erupted and anger of Malay patani to Thailand government until today. Actually Malay patani don't want any war and unjustice do it by Thailand government and military. Let go to the peace. Key point Thailand government know what they need to do. All the solutions and deal already on the table. Let Malay Patani self determination for their region or if Thailand very hard to give them independence let find another solution like give them autonomy reunited 3 regions as one region. Let approve 7 demand from late Haji Sulong. Peace no war.
