    Really under-rated movie. Fantastic cast. Possibly my favourite Guy Ritchie film.

    Johnny Quid was such a fantastic character, in an all star cast Toby Kebbell stole the show. Every scene he was in was so entertaining. Mark Strong played a great character.

    This film is criminally underrated. The direction and cinematography is so stylish, the script is snappy as hell, the cast are incredible. For me, this is easily Guy Ritchie's best film. I think the problem is that it released just as this genre was dying. It absolutely stands the test of time.

    The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (and even Sherlock Holmes) are genuine great movies! At its best, there's always a certain flavor about the movie itself and the way Guy Ritchie constructs characters and the story around them.

    • @MajorProgress
      @MajorProgress ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL, you're not wrong. I really haven't seen a lot of movies from certain eras. I got into film watching and making later in life after I was 25. I have watched some and know that these movies exist. Shit, I even worked at a video store for a year plus while in college and didn't take advantage of the catalog at my fingertips, free to watch. I love that I get to watch them now though. It's an ideal and massively enjoyable experience. The flip side is I've watched and love musicals and old black-and-white films (I'm a sucker for musicals) so that era I've seen so much of and still have a passion for is extra old-school Hollywood. That is my jam.

  • @chefskiss6179

    WOW!!! When I threw this title in the hat eons ago (as per usual for some channels, lol) I just never thought it would actually be picked up(!). So, sincerely, bottom of my heart stuff here, guys, a big THANK you for checking out this one. That was a fun watchalong with y'all. I have so much I wanna say but can't even begin... :/
    I remember coming out of Lock Stock when it originally came out and was just so blown away. I loved the whole camaraderie with friends aspect, and also within the many Brit classes. I thought it was a one-off and was just happy to see this approach... the fact that all these years later to find that it IS a Guy Ritchie staple, camaraderie amongst friends, and then also within different 'layers' of social standing, that is some exceptional writing. Usually it's one person, talking to another person, talking to another person... and that's a movie. But Guy juggles conversations with conversations with conversations, jeez, a more articulate person could do this more justice. So, having 'grown' (up) with his work, I'm just gonna write it here and not under the actual movies' posting, and with absolute no disrespect to Ritchie... I think The Gentleman is the stuff that was gathered from the editing room floor of past works from him. The stuff that didn't make it into his previous flicks, all gathered together. It's like some A.I. made a Guy Ritchie flick... this group, something smarmy is said, then this group, something smarmy is said, then this group, something smarmy is said... cut to credits. A side note, it would have been cool if the woman was the real top-boss, and as it turns out McConaughey's character was the gentleman to HER. All along, serving her. Oh well.
    Again, Thanks for this one :D Now maybe 'we'll' be checking out Remains of the Day?😂

    React to the Genius filmmaker Shane meadows his two best films and his best tv series .
    the film Dead mans shoes and This is England two of the best films of the last twenty years then there's the follow up tv series to the This is England film which just is done to perfection and makes the whole package film and show incredible .

    I agree with what Major said at the end this COULD have been GREAT, as good as Lock Stock and Snatch. I don't think its what Richard said that he misses the camera whipping and transitions - this has a lot of that too it just isn't as noticeable because it isn't as fresh and original the third time around. But even more importantly it has to mesh with the story - with Snatch the camera was like a character but this its so incidental because the story is too convoluted. Snatch literally had snappy dialogue throughout every second where this has it only in some scenes.
    Maybe needed one more script treatment. IMO a lot of the Russian scenes, councilor stuff and Jeremy Piven and Ludacris could have been trimmed idk. I wonder what a Snatch-like sequence with introducing characters through title cards instead of voice over would have done. Shame the sequel was cancelled I really liked the Wild Bunch.

    Glad to see someone do this movie. If you need more Brit gangster films, there's a couple good Tom Hardy films to check out. He plays twins in a film about real life gangster twins in LEGEND and his star making role in BRONSON. It's probably one of his best performances as an actor. It's not a gangster film per se, but it does follow the crazy criminal life of Charlie Bronson. One of Britain's most notorious criminals. Keep up the great work guys. Chin chin

    I find it hard to decide if our greatest living director is Tarentino or Guy Ritchie. I guess I'd have to go with Tarantino as Guy has made a couple of real stinkers. This however is not one of them. I really hope that a sequel is still possible, maybe set 20 years in the future with Johnny Quid leading a gang of veteran crooks with Archie and the Wild Bunch reprising their roles.

      I'm sure we have both seen this movie. But we might make an exception because it is so good! Willem Dafoe is from Wisconsin, which is where I am from, and I know that means nothing but for me, just allows me to have a celebrity shoutout for no reason but to have one! Seriously a fantastic movie. If the Director/Writer would have just gotten out of his own way.

    One of you is getting to caught up looking for directional identity and they are losing the enjoyment of the film. If you paint a picture for 12 months no longer see the beauty, you need to step back. What happened to Tank in this film? The Councillor? The Banker, did she die?, her husband? This must have either been a really badly written film or cut by 40 mins at least. I suspect it was cut heavily, that comment about the Russian losing an arm and a leg suggests it all wrapped up nicely in one or another. In this one, the best scene was the last. I also suspect that when he was at school, the 2 kids with him are the ones in the scene where he dips one into the crayfish. It also feels like there is a story about the mother and the boss, showing how Alfie was not the issue and how he was. Maybe found out the truth or something. So unresolved. 2.2/5 like that.
