    I'm interested in what you think of my first try at a trail video on this beautiful New Mexico hiking trail to Williams Lake. I made a few mistakes and I didn't even try a color grade on this footage. I think I would like to try more of these in the future. I am readily taking inspiration from Kraig Adams and Erik Normark. If you have never seen them before, check out their hiking videos.

    The video made me long to be outside! The little details that make being out there so nice (like the brief shot of the stream running underneath the hole in the snow) were really nice. The very brief setup intro at the lodge was a nice touch, it wasn't too much but just enough to make it more "human"--to get a peak at your personal experience leading up to the hike. Letting nature do the majority of the talking was a nice touch. I'm wondering if there's some brief audio you can do of yourself to frame the experience (an intro of sorts)--something you do consistently for all of your outdoor videos. For example the very first part of your gear videos is a brief summary of what you'll be covering in the video and why it's important--maybe something like that about the outdoor experience, why you wanted to do it and what about the experience you most enjoyed. Perhaps include some links to the trail, accommodations, etc to help others plan a trip if they really like what they see. And last, the length and the sound track were right on!! Very nicely done and I'm looking forward to more!

    What camera are you using? I remember from a previous post you were looking at Fujis.

    • @MattShafter
      @MattShafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony Rx100 IV. Small sensor and very limited 24mm wide angle. This video would be half again better withat huge sensor, 16mm lens, and an external mic!

    • @dcaudwell
      @dcaudwell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattShafter Agreed! I'm at the same watershed moment: what gives me the biggest pause is, having worked hard to shave my base weight to 8lb, I'm now looking at a struggle to stay below 10lb if I take the quality-camera-kit-leap!
      Last summer I went to Nepal with my GF - she took her iPhone XS, a mini tripod and Rode iPhone mic and I borrowed a friend's Rx100iii and shot RAW. However, we both used both and honestly most of the time the jpegs and video from the iPhone came out better, unless compared with some (not all by any means) of the Sony shots after time-consuming post-processing. Some of that is us, as novice photographers, not having a high technical skill level. Even so, it convinced me not to buy an Rx100 but instead to look at a Fuji APS-C system. I'm now hesitating about an XT-30 (or even the lighter but extremely capable XT-200!) knowing that my base weight is going to get hit badly... I'm almost tempted to settle for an iPhone 11 Pro, pocket the change and the weight savings, while keeping great stabilized video, great jpeg processing and wide angle -to-short tele versatility! First-world, mid-pandemic privilege I realize...

    The sounds of nature and serene music create a wonderful backdrop for the film. It sets the tone for the visual. Minimal speaking allowed this to continue / thread throughout the film. It felt like it needed a larger visual. Or maybe more variety in color. The long shots of the mountains and sitting by the stream / waterfalls augmented the visual appeal. Great vibe. Very enjoyable to watch. You nailed it.
