I researched and watched video after video regarding the D3400, then bought one. (my first DSLR). Only now do I find these superb videos. Precise, informative hands on and no "Im going to be a superstar" nonsense. Thank you Maarten. I chose well, as now confirmed by a guru. :)
I've loved my Nikon D3400 since 2017. Just returned from Japan. Took pictures in Tokyo, on the summit of Fuji, in the Aokigahara forest, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Nara and I am happy with all. I owe much of that to you who got me comfortable with the camera from the start. Thanks for all the support.
Thank you. I have just received a 3400 and have alot to learn. This has shown me a few things i didn't know. Can't wait to learn how to use this thing 📷
Thanks for being exactly the person I was hoping would find this video. More are on their way in the next week or so. If you have any specific topic requests, I'll do my best to cover them. Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.
I'm excited to see them! I know absolutely nothing about camera settings so I'll probably wait to see what you cover until asking questions so you don't have to repeat yourself. I'm curious about the lenses mostly, i ended up buying the kit that came with the two lenses, 18-55 and 70-300, I'm planning on doing a lot of far away pictures and action pictures so I'm hoping I can learn it all quick :)
I appreciate the kind words, and the subscription - I'll do my best to live up to your expectations. If you didn't spot them (you'll see them listed in the description below the video) I did do a series of videos about the D3400.
Maarten Heilbron actually I am watching and will be watching again to learn from your videos as I am at the very early stage of learning all about DSLR. By the way thanks for replying. Much appreciated.
I am thinking of upgrading from my Fuji Megazoom bridge camera to a DSLR. Thank you for your videos introducing the Nikon cameras. They are interesting and helpful.
Just treated myself to an early Christmas present with my new D3400. Hasn't arrived yet but when it does I'll definitely be referring back to your D3400 video series.
The D3300 is probably a better buy. Nikon was a little sneaky with the specs they advertised for the D3400. The flash guide numbers for the D3300 is: 12.0 m / 39.4 ft. and for the D3400: 7m / 22 ft So they cut the flash power in half, and by doing so got a better battery life rating from CIPA. And of course they removed the stereo mic input jack and the sensor cleaning. Snapbridge I hear is a bit frustrating. If the image quality is better, that would be the only improvement, along with the incremental weight saving.
I am an amateur willing to learn more skilled photography and about to buy my first DSLR... Nikon D3400 vs D5600 ... which one will be a better buy for me? Also, for 18-140 mm VR, which device will perform better?
Unless you have a cash surplus or are dedicated to being a better photographer and planning to work hard at it, take the D3400 - and invest in a better lens. A shorter zoom length will probably be a better length and require you to be a more careful shooter. There's no difference between these cameras using that lens.
Hello Sir...I tried to connect my d3400 device with snapbridge but it is not working...airplane mode is disabled...when i tried to change Bluetooth setting, getting an error that this option is not available in current camera setting...I searched over internet but could not find any solution...can you please help me out with this problem?
I'm looking to purchase my first DSLR camera for my trip to Japan next year. I want to be able to take pics of the landscapes, wildlife, and just everyday encounters. I am going back between the D3400 and Canon's Rebel T6, however it seems that the Nikon wins in almost every category, but it is a bit more expensive. Any tips for someone just starting out in the photography world?
Hello, Ive been looking at the D3400 for a while, but recently found a really good deal on a D7000. Ive done some research but still unsure. It will be my first DSLR. At the moment, I can get the d3400 for $450 and the d7000 for $500 (CAD and body only) Is it worth the extra money for the d7000 or is the d3400 a better choice?
Both good choices. The D7000 offers a few more features, but the D3400 offers some additional speed, but if this is your first DSLR, likely isn't much of a factor. I would save the money on the body and invest in a better lens instead.
Hey Maarten! Love your videos. Keep up the good work. I have shot a lot with my brothers D3200 and am planning to buy my own dslr. I am amazed with the image quality produced by the D3400 and its high ISO performance for its price. I normally shot with manual controls. Will this be a good upgrade from the D3200 that I have shooting with or should I go for the canon 77d with better manual controls? Will it have similar image quality and performance as the D3400(image quality does matter to me)?
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated. Although there is a difference in colour treatment provided by Canon and Nikon, and the specific features of the camera may differ slightly (as does the lens selection) I would not say that image quality is not materially different - the differences are very minor, as you will see on dxomark, where the lens is really the differentiating factor. The manual controls for exposure and focus offered are the same, although the control set is different. Other than observing that Nikon removes more features from their entry level models than the competition, I would judge based on your preference for the cost, the size and your affinity for the camera's design and/or brand name. Hope this helps.
I wanted to start photography but confused Which D-slr to bought for first time. I have checked so many sites most of them says go for Nikon and over here I am confused to choose from beginner dslr like D3300,D3400& D5300????
All are good cameras, all can be good for beginners - some will allow you to grow more than others. Choose with your hand (they're all different sizes), your wallet and your heart.
Hi am planning to buy dslr but confused between d3400 and d5600(touch).. Can you please tell me is the touch screen really matters and makes easier for arrange settings such as iso shutter speed and aperture with touch for novice photographer
The touch screen is most useful for picking a focus point - the ability to tap the spot and take the photo makes it easy to take a picture with exactly what you want in focus.
Hi Mr. Heilbron, this is such a pleasant video to watch. I'm a beginner in DSLR and debating whether to buy the D3400 or the D5600. A part from the microphone, do you think that the difference in the AF points and the better screen are worth the extra money? I can't wait to make the decision and start learning with the camera AND your videos. Thank you very much!
Thank you, it was a pleasure to read your kind words. If you are serious about photography and can afford the D5600, it is the better camera (mostly for features, not quality). If you are thinking about video, I would recommend that you look at a mirrorless camera, in general they are more suitable for video production. I know there is a lot of discussion about focus points and speed - for most photographers, it doesn't really make a difference. For a novice, it's not an issue I would worry about. The quality of the screen doesn't make any difference to your photographs. Hope this helps.
Hi Maarten, First of all thank you so much for this video. I am a novice in Photography and recently purchased a D3400. I find that your video on D3400 is so helpful and informative. Could you also please let me know how to use external flash with D3400. I am interested in knowing the settings with external flash. Thanks Vachow.
Hi Marteen, warm explained. I never use dslr before, i start to learn it after i touch somebody camera few weeks ago. I like it when i can monitoring (preview picture taken) from the viewfinder (get the sensation). Screen will automatically off if i put my eye on viewfinder. Please Correcting me if i'm wrong; I think i will choose this camera for can use (live) by connecting to tv screen or projector (by hdmi line) so we can using tv screen for monitoring (but only picture not include icon) as live show. Is it possible Marteen? Tq
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. You are correct, when an HDMI cable and monitor are connected, the display of the LCD screen (not the viewfinder) is output to the screen - this means that this feature is available only for liveview. You cannot preview the photo to be taken in the viewfinder - it's a optical image through the lens, not a preview. Only mirrorless cameras (with electronic viewfinders) display a preview in the viewfinder. There are no options to modify the HDMI output, as there are on some cameras, the external screen will display exactly what is on the LCD, menus, icons and all. Hope this helps.
Yes, unfortunately quality has a price. Look at the Sony A6000, which has the features you're looking for at a more reasonable price. th-cam.com/video/hkBnze9wUQU/w-d-xo.html I own one, and have been very pleased. It's only shortcoming (and reason to buy the A6300) is there's no 4K.
Sir, I'm planning to buy a DSLR. I usually take photos when I'm travelling only. Now I wanna know whether I should go for a D3400 with a better lens like sigma 18 200 mm or D5500 with a kit lens?
Hi, maarten Greetings from Venezuela, I need your help. I have a Sony RX100M3 and I want to buy my first DSLR for beginner, my question is: is it worth the change? In terms of quality of photography there is a relevant jump? Or can cameras with 1-inch sensors compete with APSC sensors on the D3400 or the D5600? I want a quality break for photography of sporadic trips and family events, not professional use. I wait your answer. Thank you.
I'm always happy to help my friends in Venezuela. It's worth it if you want a larger sensor, better lenses, and the ability to choose a specific lens for a specific purpose. For trips and family events, you're likely better off with the RX100M3 - which I think is a terrific little camera, just perfect for travel, creating high quality photos. Two of my favourite holiday photos - both of which I've enlarged to 60x90cm prints - were taken with RX100 series cameras. Here's my review: th-cam.com/video/PMcYrkyJyjI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you very much for responding Maarten, at the time your review of the rx100m3 helped me make the decision to buy it, but I would like to go further in terms of photographic quality. My sony would be the compact comfortable and easy to carry and the DSLR for special occasions where you can take it sacrificing comfort. Thanks
Always my pleasure, understood. Shooting with a traditional DSLR is a different experience, and not just for reasons of quality, which may be hard to perceive under most circumstances. However, the ability to zoom further with a long lens, or use a lens specifically designed for portraits with a nice background blur, or the ability to add a high quality flash will make a DSLR a good choice to expand your photography horizons.
How many times zoom does this have? I am a beginner and do not understand what does all this mm thingies mean. I only understand like 10x zoom,50x zoom etc
Hello Maarten. Your videos are awesome and very helpful. I want to buy my first DLSR and I'm stuck between 2 nikon's models : d5300 and d3400. I think I'll buy d5300 because I'm interest also to make videos and this models has an articulated screen and in my country the prices are very similar. Question: I can use your tutorials if I'll have d5300 and not d3400? I supposed the soft is quite similar. On youtube are a lot of tutorials for d3400, but not for d5300. Thank you very much !
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. I think you'll find enough similarity between the two - the D5300 has more features, but works (more or less) the same - that those videos will help you get started.
While there's definitely a better mirrorless camera for filmmaking than the D3400 (as the D3400 has a mirror to hide while shooting video) it's a good choice, unless you're looking to vlog, in which case a Canon with a 180 flip screen might be a better option.
Thanks for the kind words. Either is fine, it depends on what you intend to photograph. The 35mm on this sensor is the equivalent of 50mm on a 35mm sensor - that's generally considered the "normal" view for human vision.
Both are good cameras - unless there's a specific photography goal (video, night, portraits, star trails - where one might offer small advanrages over another) my general recommendation for novices is to choose first with your wallet, then with your hand (maybe one feels more comfortable) and then with your heart - which one has the greatest appeal? Hope this helps.
Hi, I purchased a PNY Elite Performance 64gb Flash Memory High Speed SDXC Class 10 UHS-I, but it's 4K ultra HD. Would this card work with my Nikon D3400 for pictures and videos? For as far as I know my camera it's not 4K, but can I still use this sd card? Thank you, Camelia
I'm not really in the business of certifying cards for compatibility with cameras, so I can't guarantee anything - but I see no reason why that should not work. Have you tried it? Are you having problems?
The button needs to be pressed to unlock the lens from its closed position - and again when you want to close it when you're done shooting. This is bad design - reinforced by the fact they've got an error message on screen.
I'm really considering picking up this camera for my father who used to be big into photography (film days) I know he is looking for a camera that can do low light well. He was impressed with the Sony a7 a little while back but I'm looking to spend less than that but find comparable results in a aps-c camera. (stills not video) How do you think this model handles that? Thank you.
The ISOs (demonstrated in my video about the exposure settings - th-cam.com/video/dg3cFs8OTd8/w-d-xo.html) start to show grain at 3200, are usable up to 6400 and above that not bad, but ... This model is a bit basic - Nikon removes features quite quickly as they move down the line. How's the D5500? th-cam.com/video/esc0PNAh9-k/w-d-xo.html which is a little more full featured. For an old-school photographer, maybe the Fuji X models, which have physical controls for aperture and shutter (and some ISO) might be more interesting. I know it's mirrorless but there is the Fuji X100T which has a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder to consider (th-cam.com/video/15WdNhfMoN4/w-d-xo.html ) - and if you can wait, I see rumours about a successor model to be announced in January?
Thank you for the very helpful and enlightening response Maarten. I was thinking about some of the mirrorless options available too. The benefits of an EVF are something I believe he would appreciate.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I haven't tried, but pretty sure - do a search for remote controls or intervalometer for D3400 - there are some Amazon links.
Hello Maarten and thank you for your work. Can I get an advice? I am thinking about getting d3200 (used, 200$), I plan to buy proper lenses, 400$ or more, in time. My plan is to take images of hiking on mountains and nature, with my 2 kids. Should I cash out for d3400? I could go for d5600, but I don't see any reason to buy anything new. Any advice / suggestion is very welcome. You are awesome. 🤘
Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure that any of those choices will suit.It is worthwhile investing more in lenses (which will last some time) than bodies. Starting with an inexpensive used body will help you understand what features will be most useful to you, and the capabilities (if any) that you would like to have.
I was going to just say no, but I thought I'd do a little checking to see if there was an alternate solution - sadly, it's still no - there is no button or device that can zoom the lens.
I have thinking purchase new camera. I have not more knowledge about cameras. I have choose 3 different cameras. 1) canon EOS 1300D 2) Nikon D3300 3)Nikon D3400 Which one is best camera for me. I have use camera only for capturing my holiday and picknic photos. I hope u will suggest me best camera.
I would judge them about equal - minor differences, more in functionality and design than in image quality. Choose the one that suits your wallet and your hand - and if you’re still undecided, let your heart guide you to the one that looks nicest or the brand you prefer.
Hello: would you please provide your opinion on a choice of lens for macro use with the D3400? I’m leaning toward the Tamron SP 90 mm f/2.8 VC F017. Is this a wise choice in the event I upgrade to a better Nikon camera in the future? Thank you for any guidance or opinions you can share!
If you are eventually planning to upgrade to a full-frame (FX in the Nikon language) camera, then it would make sense to purchase a full frame lens for macro work. I'm not familiar with the lens you mention, but my observation would be that in general, I like to be a little closer to my subject when shooting table top - so I prefer a shorter macro focal length, say 50-60mm, to keep the subject more or less at arm's length. This longer length may be more useful if you're shooting nature where you can't get particularly close, and don't need to "adjust" the subject as you work.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you so much for your reply! Do you find that needing to be very close to your subjects while shooting macro, you run into problems with shadows? That would be a concern for me that I thought I’d avoid with a 90 mm.
Maarten, I recently purchased a Nikon 3400 for a trip out west, but I am a novice when it comes to camera use. One of the features I want in a camera is the ability to zoom in on a distant subject and take a picture. I have tried with this camera, turning the zoom lens to 55 and the button on the left that zooms in. However, when I take the picture I do not get the zoomed in version. What do I need to do to zoom in on a distant object and get a close-up? Thank you.
That depends on how close you can get, and how tight you want to be zoomed in - and I know that's hard to predict. Most people are reasonably happy with 30mm. Beyond that, the best lens you can afford. It's better to have a lens with a constant aperture (one that has only one F number in the name, so not "F3.5-5.6", but just "F4").
Thanks Sir For This Amazing Description of The Nikon D3400 I am Planning To Purchase It For Video Work. So is it good In Shooting Videos or any other camera that you can suggest for video work in this budget..? ThankYou
I do have trouble recommending DSLR cameras for video, as mirrorless cameras are much more suited, and true video cameras even more. Think about the Sony AX33, or if you also want to shoot stills, the Panasonic GX850 (I haven't reviewed either)
Can you advise the best time to use the zoom lens?? I go to zoos a lot & like to photograph the animals. I am new to the d3400 so not sure when to use the zoom lens or the lens it comes with
Maybe this will be helpful: th-cam.com/video/eVN4y2Zu1LQ/w-d-xo.html In general, photographers use a zoom lens to get a better shot of a subject that they can't get closer to. The other use is the reduce the background - a closer object shot with a tight zoom will have a smaller background area, and will (depending upon distances) have a blurrier background. Hope this helps.
Maarten, I"m loving my D3400, but one thing, how can I do off camera flash without using the on camera flash as a trigger. I have looked and looked and it seems almost impossible. I have 2 Amazon Basics speed flash units, and they work great with the infrared, but no device or hot shoe attachment seems to work to get away from using the on camera flash method. You are awesome, thanks so much for all your share with us. :)
LOL!!!!!!!!! You are right! I am in Germany... so... Battery turn on is a NO go, due to 220. I have to buy a 220 charger! Gotta love life, right!!!! @@MaartenHeilbron
Hi, can you send link for the right 220 charger, like through ebay.de??? I would APPRECIATE THAT! CAPS ON!!! LOL!!!! I hate getting wrong thing, like the ink for my HP printer. It was not the real deal and I wasted money! HELP!!!!!! I want to use my new camera!!!!!!!
How is it that the charger doesn't work? Thye're all universal (110-220) these days - or not? Check the fine print. Did you not buy it in Germany? Yes, some part of my heritage must trace back to Heilbronn, my family comes from Holland near the German border.
I bought the D3500 -- nice DSLR, but the focus points show as little pin head tiny dot for active focus point -- hard to see. Mostly, the Nikon is a good quality and pleasuable camera in use. Excellent dollar value as the kit with lenses and bag / two batteries for around $400 is very cheap nowadays.
There's nothing to explain - these are for your personal preference to make the image look the way you want. Experiment to see which is best for you, or for a specific photo.
Great video, Maarten! I like photograph edition, and i learn to work with the photoshop software from 5 years ago. Until now, i just take photos with compact cameras, but now i'm ready for real action. I want to learn more and became great in photography and edition in the cameras photography. So, I'm going to buy a camera, and with your videos, i think i wanna buy the D3400 or the D5500. Must of the photos are about people, in events and parties, family meetings and so on.. Next year, i'm going to visit tourist countries, with beautiful buildings and Landscapes, and that's too a reason. With the budjet that i have, in the market near me i have 3 solutions of leans with the camera D3400 and D5500 with some variations of price, but below the budjet: For the D3400 this lenses: 1 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR 2 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR 3 - F-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR + F-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II The solution for the D5500 lenses is that: 4 - AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II 5 - AF-S DX 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR What's your's recommendation or suggestion? And about the lenses? Greats from Portugal
Yeah, but the camera in the market here came with this 3: 1 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR 2 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR 3 - F-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR + F-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II What lenses should i choose?
The best lens is the one that works with your camera to help you take great photos. My only recommendation - as I don't know what you're intending to shoot, is to purchase the best lens you can afford. A good lens could last a lifetime. I did make a video on this topic for Nikon owners: th-cam.com/video/Rbn1PQ3irPc/w-d-xo.html
I received the 3400 last week. I took a ought 200 pictures then tried to experiment with setting. I'm not sure why, but the shutter release button no longer takes a photo. I can take video. I do have a working battery and sd card with space for pictures. Can you help me figure out what I did and should do with my new camera? Thank you.
I have found my own problem an solution. I fell properly foolish to learn that the macro lens that I bought and attached caused the issue. I fixed as soon as I removed the lens.
It sounds as if the camera is having trouble focussing with the macro lens. Try manual focus, that should enable to you take a photo even when the camera doesn't think it's in focus. Also use the magnify button to zoom in for a closer look to get the focus exact.
Great vid mate, do you think this camera is suitable for action sports (motocross), I'm just getting started and I'm wondering what DSLR would be best for price and use. Cheers
Are you planning to shoot stills or video? With the right lens, this would be an acceptable camera for motocross, but you may need to pre-focus as I suspect the focus system isn't fast enough to capture and follow quickly moving subjects. I'd have a look at the mirrorless Sony A6500 (I realize it's more expensive) which has super-fast autofocus follow and a great burst mode - and it's also a terrific video performer.
Right. If video isn't in your plans, then the D3400, with the right lens for motocross would be fine. The one feature you might enjoy from a more expensive model is a faster burst mode, or a bigger burst buffer.
Maarten Heilbron yeah nice alright thanks so much Maarten very helpful, right now I don't have the money for another lense but in the future I'll defiantly look into it and ask for your opinion
You could suggest a lot of cameras to me, like the D3400, and I would say yes. If that's a model that appeals to you, and fits your hand and your wallet - it's a good choice.
I made a video to explain exactly that (although we don't use a Nikon in the video, the settings are the same). th-cam.com/video/FgpHdMxv2rg/w-d-xo.html
That is a question that does not have a simple answer, as it depends on you and your subject. Here are some tips to help you think about cameras: th-cam.com/video/9WiJQF0JXIE/w-d-xo.html
How long? In M mode, the D3400 has both bulb (shutter is open while the shutter release is pressed) and time (you set the exposure duration) for long exposures up to 30 minutes. Check the manual for details.
Give us some information about how to do good photography during the day and night. If you have made a video in this subject then it will be of great benefit. Specially Nikon D 3400
The techniques that I describe for setting exposure, focus, etc - which are in this playlist: will cover both day and night situations. th-cam.com/play/PLW95Ufn1YnGI-sQsW4RLBf3Oltv10R55X.html
These Nikon d3400 videos are great but I'm a first time dslr photographer and I find the videos move too fast so I get lost and confused with information overload. I would love longer and slower videos with more details. It would help a lot. Thanks.
Maarten Heilbron oh I didn't know about that feature! Thanks for sharing. I have to say that after years of smartphone photography, I find dslr intimidating thus why I plan to buy the d3400 as it's user friendly and affordable although the lack of articulated screen and mic input is frustrating. I really love your videos! I would like to suggest that you make reviews or how to videos for vlogging cams. Perhaps I should stick to my cell for vlogging and dedicate the dslr to stills bc your video on video settings for the d3400 looked complicated lol. In any case thank you again for taking the time to do these. I really appreciate it.
Maarten Heilbron I've seen them and enjoyed them but I was hoping for a comparison between entry level models at a smaller price level. The best bang for the buck when upgrading from a good cell phone like the lg g6 or iphone 7 to camcorders for example. Although smartphones offer up to 4k video capabilities, they have limitations compared to camcorders from Panasonic or Sony. I know you don't like to endorse models but from a factual perspective it would be nice to have guidance in choices at a budget level for both vlogging and stills cameras. Top 5 lists for ex but without endorsing any of them.
There are some types of SD cards that are suitable for pictures, but are not fast enough for video, however, SD cards that are suitable for video will also be suitable for stills. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video.
Your tutorial is easy to understand and more than sufficient for a beginner to grasp. Thank you so much!!
That's very nice to hear, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I researched and watched video after video regarding the D3400, then bought one. (my first DSLR). Only now do I find these superb videos. Precise, informative hands on and no "Im going to be a superstar" nonsense. Thank you Maarten. I chose well, as now confirmed by a guru. :)
I'm thankful for your kind words, appreciated.
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great trip, glad to hear that I was of some assistance.
Thank you. I have just received a 3400 and have alot to learn. This has shown me a few things i didn't know. Can't wait to learn how to use this thing 📷
Always my pleasure - and always nice to hear that my videos are useful.
I'm getting the d3400 for xmas and as my first dslr this video helped tremendously! Thank you!
That's so nice to read, thank you for the kind words.
i just purchased this camera yesterday as my first more professional camera, I appreciate these videos as I'm sure they'll help me out, thank you!
Very good. I do have the 70-300, so I'll see if there's some aspect of lenses that's worth talking about.
These videos are so helpful. Thank you so much for posting them. I think I’m going to enjoy this camera.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Bought my first DSLR. Thanks to you for your nice and concise explanation. I am subscribed.
It's always my pleasure - thanks for watching.
Thanks, awesome video. I just received the D3400 for my Birthday and look forward to learning how to take advantage of it's many features.
I appreciate the kind words thanks for taking the time to comment - happy birthday and enjoy your new camera.
I am thinking of upgrading from my Fuji Megazoom bridge camera to a DSLR. Thank you for your videos introducing the Nikon cameras. They are interesting and helpful.
I appreciate the kind words, always nice to know my videos are helpful.
Just treated myself to an early Christmas present with my new D3400. Hasn't arrived yet but when it does I'll definitely be referring back to your D3400 video series.
Santa clearly thinks you've been good. Happy shooting, and thanks for viewing.
Wow, this video is amazing. Simple and digestible information for a noob like me. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear you found this video useful, thanks for the kind words.
I just got this camera and am looking forward to your instruction on it.. Thanks for posting. :)
Thank you for watching, always nice to know I've provided useful content.
Wat een goede reviews en hoge kwaliteit filmpjes maak je ook, chapeau!
Dat vind ik bijzonder vriendelijk. Ik kon een nieuwe hoed goed gebruiken.
Excellent Tutorial Maarten, they should recommend your videos in the manual
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thank you.
Its simple and most effective video..... Thanks to you....
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks.
The D3300 is probably a better buy.
Nikon was a little sneaky with the specs they advertised for the D3400. The flash guide numbers for the D3300 is: 12.0 m / 39.4 ft. and for the D3400: 7m / 22 ft
So they cut the flash power in half, and by doing so got a better battery life rating from CIPA.
And of course they removed the stereo mic input jack and the sensor cleaning.
Snapbridge I hear is a bit frustrating.
If the image quality is better, that would be the only improvement, along with the incremental weight saving.
Thanks for those details.
Great help for a starter photographer!
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated
Loved the video. I'm starting my new camera!!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Great video, it has really helped me.
Always nice to know that you appreciate my videos.
Great video thank you for your help
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to know my videos are appreciated.
Hello Sir...I tried to connect my d3400 device with snapbridge but it is not working...airplane mode is disabled...when i tried to change Bluetooth setting, getting an error that this option is not available in current camera setting...I searched over internet but could not find any solution...can you please help me out with this problem?
Here is the best I can do ... th-cam.com/video/gs5T5R6sLoc/w-d-xo.html
i noticed it doesnt transfer photos shot in RAW
That's a typical shortcoming of camera apps.
Both good - let your wallet guide you, your hand pick the one that fits best and the let your heart choose the brand you like better.
Thank you sir for such a great videos
It's my pleasure, thanks for your kind words.
Very helpful, thank you very much.
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind word.
Ok, thank you very much :)
Always my pleasure.
I purchased it but dont know how auto focus ans manual focus work in D3400... plz help
Try this video: th-cam.com/video/KTPpDY8H7DE/w-d-xo.html
Helped me alot! Thanks
That's the nicest thing you could say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi Maarten. Would this video be relevant to the D3300 camera? Thanks
Mostly, yes. There are a few small differences.
Hi Maarten,
First of all thank you so much for this video. I am a novice in Photography and recently purchased a D3400. I find that your video on D3400 is so helpful and informative.
Could you also please let me know how to use external flash with D3400. I am interested in knowing the settings with external flash.
Thanks
Vachow.
The camera is due to o Nikon this week, and I don't have a speed light - but I will see what I can do.
Hi Marteen, warm explained.
I never use dslr before, i start to learn it after i touch somebody camera few weeks ago.
I like it when i can monitoring (preview picture taken) from the viewfinder (get the sensation). Screen will automatically off if i put my eye on viewfinder.
Please Correcting me if i'm wrong;
I think i will choose this camera for can use (live) by connecting to tv screen or projector (by hdmi line) so we can using tv screen for monitoring (but only picture not include icon) as live show.
Thank you, it's hard to say good bye to D3400.
I saw NIKON D800 can do (Live view with clean view); but it's so expensive.
Yes, unfortunately quality has a price. Look at the Sony A6000, which has the features you're looking for at a more reasonable price. th-cam.com/video/hkBnze9wUQU/w-d-xo.html
I own one, and have been very pleased. It's only shortcoming (and reason to buy the A6300) is there's no 4K.
Maarten Heilbron thank you for the recommendation i'll check that.
Always my pleasure.
hello marteen I m confused which dslr should I buy canon 1300d (Rebel t6) Nikon d3400 plz reply me i m begineer
I'm equally confused - either is a good choice. Let your wallet, your hand and your heart be your guide.
Sir, I'm planning to buy a DSLR. I usually take photos when I'm travelling only. Now I wanna know whether I should go for a D3400 with a better lens like sigma 18 200 mm or D5500 with a kit lens?
Unless there was a specific feature that the D5500 has that the D3400 is missing, that you know you're going to use, I'd go with the better lens.
Thank you Sir, for your suggestion :) It has been a pleasure talking to you.
Always happy to help.
Another thing I wanted to ask you is, will it be better to go with a single 18 200 lens or a combination of 18 55 & 55 200 kit lens?
I know that you'll save money by buying the bundle, but I'm tempted to suggest you wait until you have a bette sense of what you plan to do and need.
Helpful thanks.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks.
Hi, maarten
Greetings from Venezuela, I need your help.
For a camera with interchangeable lenses, that depends entirely on the lens you purchase with the camera.
Hi! Would you say there is a DSLR in this budget that may be better suited for filmmaking than the D3400? Thanks! :)
While there's definitely a better mirrorless camera for filmmaking than the D3400 (as the D3400 has a mirror to hide while shooting video) it's a good choice, unless you're looking to vlog, in which case a Canon with a 180 flip screen might be a better option.
Good description ..I want ask a question I want to buy Nikon d3400 what lense should I go for 35mm f1.8 or 55mm f1.8
Thanks for the kind words. Either is fine, it depends on what you intend to photograph. The 35mm on this sensor is the equivalent of 50mm on a 35mm sensor - that's generally considered the "normal" view for human vision.
nikon d3400 or canon 700d which one do you suggest
Both are good cameras - unless there's a specific photography goal (video, night, portraits, star trails - where one might offer small advanrages over another) my general recommendation for novices is to choose first with your wallet, then with your hand (maybe one feels more comfortable) and then with your heart - which one has the greatest appeal? Hope this helps.
Dear Sir, how to know what size of filter and hood for nikon d3400 18-55mm lens and 70-300mm lens. Please , thanks !
Nikon's lens web page has all the details for all their lenses: en.nikon.ca/nikon-products/camera-lenses/all-lenses/index.page
thanks a lot sir !
Always my pleasure
Hi, I purchased a PNY Elite Performance 64gb Flash Memory High Speed SDXC Class 10 UHS-I, but it's 4K ultra HD.
Would this card work with my Nikon D3400 for pictures and videos? For as far as I know my camera it's not 4K, but can I still use this sd card?
Thank you,
Camelia
I'm not really in the business of certifying cards for compatibility with cameras, so I can't guarantee anything - but I see no reason why that should not work. Have you tried it? Are you having problems?
Hi, Marteen..! I'm going to Murmansk next year for hunting aurora pics. Is this dslr enough to do that? Thanks before..
Sounds like a great trip. it likely depends on the lens, but as the D3400 has full manual with bulb (and timer) modes, it should work nicely.
do you have to press on the button on lens when you want to zoom in and out all the time?
The button needs to be pressed to unlock the lens from its closed position - and again when you want to close it when you're done shooting. This is bad design - reinforced by the fact they've got an error message on screen.
You're a smart man Maarten :)
+NETRO thanks for your kind words.
Always my pleasure.
great videos!! is it possible to connect a intervalometer to the d3400??
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I haven't tried, but pretty sure - do a search for remote controls or intervalometer for D3400 - there are some Amazon links.
This D3400 or Sony A68 for wildlife, birdwatching and nature?
This one - with the right lens. Or the RX10-IV, which comes with a great lens for birding.
So helpful!
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say.
Starting with an inexpensive used body will help you understand what features will be most useful to you, and the capabilities (if any) that you would like to have.
which is the best buy between D3400 and D3300 , considering video also into consideration
Trick question? Why would it not be the D3400?
Is there a button you can push to zoom in or out without using your hands to turn the lens
I was going to just say no, but I thought I'd do a little checking to see if there was an alternate solution - sadly, it's still no - there is no button or device that can zoom the lens.
d3400 or d5300 which one will be for entry level sir....
For a novice either is fine. Be guided by your wallet.
I have thinking purchase new camera. I have not more knowledge about cameras. I have choose 3 different cameras.
1) canon EOS 1300D
2) Nikon D3300
3)Nikon D3400
Which one is best camera for me.
Nice Video!! I was planning to buy the Nikon D3400!! I know how it works now :-) I was wondering which was the camera you used to shoot this??
This series was recorded with the Fuji X-T2.
Thank you !
Always my pleasure
Yes, but that's an issue if the lens is in the 35mm range, 50 and over should be fine.
Maarten Heilbron Perfect, you’ve been so helpful. Many thanks!
Always happy to help.
Thank you.
You need a lens that zooms further than 55mm. There are many available from Nikon and other lens makers.
What do you recommend?
That depends on how close you can get, and how tight you want to be zoomed in - and I know that's hard to predict. Most people are reasonably happy with 30mm. Beyond that, the best lens you can afford. It's better to have a lens with a constant aperture (one that has only one F number in the name, so not "F3.5-5.6", but just "F4").
Thanks Sir For This Amazing Description of The Nikon D3400
I am Planning To Purchase It For Video Work.
I am new to the d3400 so not sure when to use the zoom lens or the lens it comes with
Maybe this will be helpful: th-cam.com/video/eVN4y2Zu1LQ/w-d-xo.html
In general, photographers use a zoom lens to get a better shot of a subject that they can't get closer to.
Sorry, I don't have a solution. Thank you very much for your kind words.
nice video. a lot of detail
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
CHARGING BATTERY NOW! ON THIS TOMORROW. LOVEEEEEEE THIS ALREADY!
In your excitement you accidentally turned caps lock on.
LOL!!!!!!!!! You are right! I am in Germany... so... Battery turn on is a NO go, due to 220. I have to buy a 220 charger! Gotta love life, right!!!! @@MaartenHeilbron
Heilbron....... NOW THAT IS GERMAN!!!!!!
Thank you for this vid.
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for adding your thoughts.
Can you do a video that explains the scene settings (portrait, landscape, etc....) on the D3400?
With the budjet that i have, in the market near me i have 3 solutions of leans with the camera D3400 and D5500 with some variations of price, but below the budjet:
For the D3400 this lenses:
1 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
2 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
3 - F-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR + F-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II
The solution for the D5500 lenses is that:
4 - AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II
5 - AF-S DX 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
What's your's recommendation or suggestion?
And about the lenses?
Greats from Portugal
Thanks for the kind words, they are both good choices that will get you off to a great start.
Any sugestions about the lenses in the camera D3400?
I'm really fond of Nikon's 16-80.
Yeah, but the camera in the market here came with this 3:
1 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
2 - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
3 - F-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR + F-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II
What lenses should i choose?
I would get the 16-80.
What is the best lense for photography?
Glad to hear you found a solution.
Ok cheers Maarten , helps a ton
I'm planning to shoot stills forgot to add that.
Hello sir
How to connect d3400 dashboard to Samsung note 3 with otg? Is it possible d3400 live view in Samsung note 3?
Sorry, I have no idea.
sir which images are good fz300 or d3400 or d5300. which is good for photography
If you're serious about photography, the Nikons are a better choice.
Hello Sir.. I am confused Between Canon 1300 D and Nikon D3400 please Suggest me which one is better with Dual lens ?
I am not familiar with the Canon 1300D, so can’t help with your question.
Maarten Heilbron ok What is the view about Nikon D3400
Good camera with a basic set of features.
Maarten Heilbron shall i go for Nikon D3400
You could suggest a lot of cameras to me, like the D3400, and I would say yes. If that's a model that appeals to you, and fits your hand and your wallet - it's a good choice.
Marvellous
Thanks for the kind word
how I can get blur background pics using this Nikon d 3400
I made a video to explain exactly that (although we don't use a Nikon in the video, the settings are the same). th-cam.com/video/FgpHdMxv2rg/w-d-xo.html
Hii sir should i buy this or go for canon t6 rebel
Sure! Both are good choices. Feel free to prefer whichever you like, for whatever reason.
Don't buy it. Because Nikon d3400 is much better than it
In iso, MP, etc
Thank you very much.
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
sir wich is the best camera nicon ,,.Canon...
That is a question that does not have a simple answer, as it depends on you and your subject. Here are some tips to help you think about cameras: th-cam.com/video/9WiJQF0JXIE/w-d-xo.html
great video
Thank you, it's always a pleasure to read my viewer's kind comments.
Would this combo work ?
D3400 KIT WITH 18-55MM VRII LENS +
AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
In general, yes. Is there something specific that you're trying to accomplish?
I generally take landscape photography and some portraits. I would expect some cool bokeh effect with the prime lens.
I am still confused, whether to buy the new d3400 or 2 gen old d5300
In general, buy the less expensive one ... But there are features on the D3500 not on the D3400.
Yes, that should work fine
How do I do a long exposure photo on this camera?
Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words. Fell free to use TH-cam's slow play feature, to turn on closed captioning or to rewatch as many times as you need.
I have made "best video settings" videos for a few vlogging cameras ... is there a specific one you're interested in?
Maarten Heilbron I've seen them and enjoyed them but I was hoping for a comparison between entry level models at a smaller price level. The best bang for the buck when upgrading from a good cell phone like the lg g6 or iphone 7 to camcorders for example. Although smartphones offer up to 4k video capabilities, they have limitations compared to camcorders from Panasonic or Sony. I know you don't like to endorse models but from a factual perspective it would be nice to have guidance in choices at a budget level for both vlogging and stills cameras. Top 5 lists for ex but without endorsing any of them.
Thanks for the suggestion. Let me think about that - how does the Panasonic GX85 strike you as an upgrade for vlogging?
Do you need an sd card to take pictures?
And if so do you need a different one for video
You need a camera to take pictures. You need an SD card to save them.
There are some types of SD cards that are suitable for pictures, but are not fast enough for video, however, SD cards that are suitable for video will also be suitable for stills. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video.
Do you need one of your connected to snap bridge
Maybe this will help: th-cam.com/video/gs5T5R6sLoc/w-d-xo.html
300 mm zoom is how much optical zoom in x?
That requires both numbers ... divide the larger number by the smaller one.
Maarten Heilbron i dnt understand....
A zoom lens has a range from wide to tight. You've only provided the tight end (300). In order to determine the range (the x) you'll need both.
how to blur background in face photos
I'm so glad you asked - if you have three minutes, Paul and I did a video to help: th-cam.com/video/FgpHdMxv2rg/w-d-xo.html
Are you satisfy with the quality sir... Compared to the value. How many star can you give it
I'm satisfied with the quality of the camera, but not with the kit lens.
@@MaartenHeilbron you mean the kit lens not good? So is it better to upgrade new Lens?
