I am still using it (for the last five years) as my backup DSLR. This camera is very good if you use it with prime lenses, even Tamrons f2.8 lenses are fantastic with D3400. Btw shutter count on my d3400 is above 300.000 and still works as on first day
300.000 for a D3400 that's amazing 🔥, that's a D3 rating They are rated for 100K I think. But yeah it is an amazing camera with excellent dynamic range. Also without an anti-aliasing filter, you can get sharper images
As a beginner photographer, it’s great. Learning manual with it has been enjoyable, relatively simple and rewarding. It will take some of the worst photos in manual mode until you figure out what you’re doing wrong. I found this to be crucial personally because it forced me to learn.
I've been using it for 7 years and I highly recommend it. I was always a manual shooter but it took me a while to learn how to use it well. I'm ready to upgrade a bit but this camera can produce incredible images when you know how to use it.
@@mrhollow2274 It just means when you start learning you will take some bad pictures before you figure out how to perfect your settings for the appropriate shot and what you want. A lot of people don't pay enough attention to shutter speed and get soft focus/blurry photos, a lot of people don't use the right f stop for portraits and get flat looking photos, etc.
@@mrhollow2274 depending on your shutter speed and aperture the photos could come out really dark or way to bright. You’ll just have to get used to balancing it out depending on the environment you’re in. And your ISO will have a big effect on the quality of photos and the brightness as well. It’s way more than just point and shoot
I have the d3400 and the d7100. I like my d7100 but I prefer the D3400. It does all I need. I have the 35mm/1.8g and the kit lens 18-55mm and the photos turn out sharp. All it needs is a good professional sensor cleaning and perhaps a calibration as a precaution. And as of today that’s around $110 w Nikon. Not bad for a camera that’s a few years old. I don’t plan to sell it ever, it might be one of thee best and most well balanced cameras Nikon has put out in its history. Easy to use too, and it takes around 15mins to get well acquainted w its many functions. I shoot mainly aperture or shutter priority and I get excellent results almost 100% of the time. Great battery life and fast focus. it’s in tune w my 35mm lens. I had to calibrate my d7100 because it was having back focus issues. The d3400 had no hiccups. Highly recommend the d3400.
I agree with you. Taking out the d7500, the d3400 has, along with the d7200, the best sensor in Nikon Dslr aps-c camera. With a good lens: 85/50/35 nikkor or Sigma, the photography results are excellent.
I bought the basic body and lens plus a 70-300mm lens USED for $500. I am frustrated by the AF and was glad to see your comments. I can't say I'm thrilled we the camera but I'll give it another go.thx
I've been using it for about 6 years and I do plan to finally upgrade soon ,but even if it has its limitations, with a good lens you can get great shots 👌🏻
Owned my D3400 for years and still use the stock lens. Takes good photos and does ok on videos even though there isn't an ability to attach an external microphone. It's great for casual photography when you just want the pictures to look better than a smartphone (especially phones released around the same time as this was). I'd like to use the phrase 'cheap and cheerful' to describe it, yes there are better options for more money but this is a good little camera for a beginner, someone on a budget or just someone who will casually use it now and then.
My D3400 has become a great webcam for the meeting room. It can zoom in the whiteboard and tv screen that most webcam can't... except I have to press the lv button every now and then.
I just picked up a Nikon D3400 with the kit lens, charger, and SD card for only $80! Absolutely love it - such an underrated gem, especially around here.
Got mine nearly a year ago and absolutely love it, compared to my iphone it takes DRASTICALLY better photos. Main issue I have with it, is well, it lacks a lot of features to be honest, but aside from that it takes awesome shots
Okay, I have owned one for 4 years I just got into photography. I am an artist as well. I added a couple prime lenses and will look for a couple better lens its a fun camera and a backup for me. I have not noticed the auto-focus issues because I still suck and am learning but I bet you I will now the next time I take it out. I do like your style and videos.. Thanks
Thank you!! This is what you get with a non sponsored review, the TRUTH. I may have a chance to get this camera on the cheep. I am a former old school photographer (film) . This camera if I get it will be a introduction for me into tech photography. I am subscribed and liked the video. I will let you know if I get the camera.
Thanks for the review. I'm looking for a camera for my 10year old who's interested in photography. I've seen 1 of these fairly cheap in my area so will go check it out.👍
I bought mimes brand new when it was released 2016❤ I continue to use it with the 18-55mm and the 70-300 mm lense it came with. But as you mentioned in the video to get better images and quality, I should get better lenses that fit f-mount. But would it be worth it or just upgrading to a newer camera?
That all depends on your budget. If you have the budget for a new camera AND lenses for it, then that will give the best results seeing as you will most likely enjoy using the camera more on top of the improved features, but if your budget is limited and you really want to keep your D3400 alive, no harm in getting some new glass. I just wouldn't invest too much money in to it anymore :)
I have this camera and I agree on that auto focus, it's a pain, but it can take beautiful pictures still. I wonder if you know of a better wireless transmitter for self portraits, my little clickers isn't working anymore and I'm saving for a better camera. Thanks for the video friend.
I only have this D3400-DSLR with the 18-55 VR Lens Kit 4 now. I'm here to learn as much about its' capabilities as possible. Will upgrade in a year for a Decent Photo-Videography Camera setup. Possibly a Canon. Where can I go to learn everything about this D3400?
I would say Jared Polin has a great user guide on TH-cam so that's where I would start. The best way to learn it though is experimentation and shooting with it ;)
I thought mine had an issue with the Autofocus. So it's common for all D3400. Your video is very helpful. Thanks a lot. It still takes awesome photos. Even much better than new smartphones.
Back in mid 2021 I bought a D3400 used for 150€, the guy that I bought the camera from had bought it used also so didn't have the box, just the strap, battery and kit lens. Well turns out it only had 800 shots on the clock! Couple months after I bought also used the 50mm f/1.8G for 159€ and the 55-200mm f/4-5.6G for 75€ It definitely makes you work for your shots as, like you said, auto-focus is SUPER hit or miss! I find myself manual focusing 90% of the time but it's very good for its age if you learn to work with its faults :)
Exactly, the sensor can still give you a solid image and the lens lineup is really cheap. It's a fantastic thing to grab on a budget if you're just willing to work a little more for the photos. Also, won't break your bank if it gets stolen or breaks on a trip or something.
I got mine in Oz while traveling only used it once time it's been sat in bag in my wardrobe for years AV only just dug it out to learn photography now lol feels bad not to use it as it was a new camera at the time . But don't have funds right now to up grade .
It is the camera I use. I like it, it is light and super portable! I totally agree that the lens is not great and taking pictures at low light tends to be frustrating! What is the lenses that you suggest for this camera? Great video!
Recommending a lens really comes down to what you're shooting and what your budget is. That being said, the 35mm f1.8 is pretty great since you can get it for dirt cheap and it's a great nifty fifty.
Been using it for years and learned manual shooting on it! Did a couple of food photography with it for business purposes and had a couple of great photos! Do you have any suggestions on a good upgrade from the 3400 this year?
I feel like you just complained about the camera, although it came out in 2016. I bought it back in Nov 2017 and paid $400 at the time, with the kit lens. I added the Nikon 30MM and it's been great. I'm not a photographer so it works for what I need.
Debating on upgrading from this to the eos r50. Not sure if I should care about full frame. I do want to have 4K recording and better video recording on the hobby level, nothing too professional. But I also would like to be able to shift for family and friends events photography / videography.
😢omg...my daughter just bought this on amazon for me for 350 to do pics at my best friend wedding in couple months as they are on a budget ...sounds like my daughter spent too much because it only comes with the one lens...18m(?)...😢
I wish you’d mentioned what price range you consider this camera worth? Cheap means something different to everyone. And what other cameras would you recommend at the $500 new price point? What other lenses would you recommend pairing with it?
i'am using d3400 for my portrait and product photography and for me it is still worth the price but the lens is so freaking expensive tho i'll replace it with a sony 6500 d3400 needs to take his 😴
I have this camera for a year now, and honestly, the only feature I've felt like I really missed, was the tilted screen, or the screen it self, when getting shots on ground level is a pain, but besides that Ive been build a really great gallery
Hi, this video had some helpful information. My question to you is, I've been doing a Podcast w/ a Logitech webcam and recently came in access to a Nikon 3400 and wanted to test it out. Visually the Nikon was obviously much better, but unlike the Logitech, I wasn't able to use the Shure MV7 (in StreamYards) without hearing both the ShureMV7 and the built in Nikon. I'm not sure if that's a setting issue or if there's a possibility to run audio directly into Camera. Thanks in advance for your help!
Sorry for the late reply, but I myself don't really have much experience with that particular piece of software. I'd imagine that it would let you adjust your audio sources but if that's not possible, the camera should allow you to lower the audio levels to 0, essentially muting it. There isn't really an option to record the MV7 straight to the camera.
I have a friend that bought this kit with only the 18-55mm lens brand new in 2018. His wife used it three times and has less than 60 shutters. He wants $250 for it. Would you say that the deal in 2023?
i’m based in brazil. my mom just hand me down this model, since i’m in art school and one of my subjects is photography. she says its brand new, but its missing the battery. idk where it is neither do her the battery here is very expensive, could you tell me if i bought an unofficial one it would work okay?
@@stresslessandrelax6368 hi sorry but this camera doesn't have 4k ouput , i usually shoot in 1080p which is highest quality format of this camera and upscaled to premiere pro to 4k timeline and export in 4k output
Lot of hate on this camera, it is a good camera for beginners and outdoor photo shoots with friends for fun. It is better than Iphone quality. Battery life serves plenty most shoots last 10 mins anyways.
I am having difficulty with my D3400. I took it on a 6 week vacation, and using manual mode, I set the ISO at 100 as it was clear sunny day, I set the aperture then centered the exposure in the middle as I had learned, but the picture was extremely over exposed. I don't know if it was me or the camera. I had to practically close the aperture in order to get a good picture. There aren't any camera shops near by so I am trying to trouble shoot via You tube. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
On a sunny day even with ISO 100 you're going to be forced to stop your lens way down. (Meaning higher f numbers). If you want to shoot with an open aperture (small f number) on a sunny day, wanna get an ND filter. Something like a simple ND8 will allow you to open your aperture much more. Of course just in case, increasing your shutter speed will bring your exposure down as well.
my god dude we get it you dont like it but i ave gotten somee great pics and videos and after post editing its awesome. you go buy you brand new stuff and we will continue having fun with the d3400
No, definitely not. Pretty much any lens that you can get will be better than the kit lens. The 35mm f1.8 for example, is a cheap one that is a vast upgrade from the kit lens.
Getting a lens with a low aperture will let in more light so you can use lower iso. The lower the iso, the less noise there will be. But first try shooting in raw and manually adjusting you aperture and iso.
I am going buying used one from facebook market place. Any suggestion please. The shutter count is 3507, is it good or bad? New in photography. What eles i need to check to buy used camera. Thanks
This is a very late reply but thought I'd reply since it's good to know what to look for in a used camera. So shutter count being 3500 is not bad at all. Most cameras can go for tens of thousands of actuations and the D3400 is rated for about 100,000. Other things you want to check when buying used is: 1. Check the sensor for any scratches or damage. (MOST IMPORTANT) 2. Check the lens, viewfinder and display for any sort of damage. 3. Check the body for any sort of damage. 4. Check the battery compartment for any corrosion or damage. (same with battery) 5. Test the camera itself a couple of times. See if the photos look the way they should. (Does AF work?) 6. Test all the functions of the camera (buttons and all) If all of those are in order, the essentials are covered. Of course something like a mistiming shutter is difficult to notice with quick tests like that, but you can only do so much when buying used.
But come on man! How are you going to shoot a photograph on a DSLR using Live view. That's why they have those beautiful focus points in the viewfinder, which is also the spirit of all DSLR, shooting looking through pentaprimsa
I'm looking to buy one to take product pictures and outfits pictures for my second hand shop (nothing very serious or professional, i just want to have good quality). I found one of these cameras on marketplace with 7000 shots taken for $130. Do you think its worth it for this purpose and price? Thank you!
That really depends on your specific market and the condition on the camera. The best price is something you can afford without it being close to something better or something new.
Hey man, thanks for the video! This and a few last videos on my channel were shot using this camera, and the lens was 35mm f/1.8G: th-cam.com/video/Nu4axVgrtgY/w-d-xo.html We handled the filming ourselves, and encountered some significant challenges, particularly with focusing and the absence of a gimbal. As a result, we ended up discarding approximately 95% of the footage :))) However, I believe the final picture turned out well, although I lack a basis for comparison as this was my first experience. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

Rn I'm using a 2008 nikon d60 and it has the exact same button layout (although it's sadly the only thing they have in common)
I have a friend that bought this kit with only the 18-55mm lens brand new in 2018. His wife used it three times and has less than 60 shutters. He wants $250 for it. Would you say that the deal in 2023?
Compared to D5300?
i’m based in brazil. my mom just hand me down this model, since i’m in art school and one of my subjects is photography. she says its brand new, but its missing the battery. idk where it is neither do her
the battery here is very expensive, could you tell me if i bought an unofficial one it would work okay?
What lenses would you recommend for family pictures for this camera?
im still using for my reels and instagram video works really well, just upscaled for video to 4k then graded in resolve 18
Can this camera do short videos ? I could not find a setting for it .
D3400 vs d3500 which one is better?
Still probably better than most of canons T line... Guess thats why it still has a high price
Hi I just got it as a gift that's why I'm here. :p
my god dude we get it you dont like it but i ave gotten somee great pics and videos and after post editing its awesome. you go buy you brand new stuff and we will continue having fun with the d3400
🤣😂🤣😂🤙🏼
got mine for 120$ with charger battery, lense cover and bag
So the best lens is the kit lens that comes with the camera?!
No, definitely not.
Pretty much any lens that you can get will be better than the kit lens. The 35mm f1.8 for example, is a cheap one that is a vast upgrade from the kit lens.
What about using the dot and apature priority?........
Quick question. How do you reduce noise on the camera? I’m trying to shoot at night or inside and I need some support? Will better lenses help or no?
Getting a lens with a low aperture will let in more light so you can use lower iso. The lower the iso, the less noise there will be. But first try shooting in raw and manually adjusting you aperture and iso.
Precisely this.
Were the pictures edited or raw used in the video? If edited, what app or editor do you use?
Oh those were all edited raw files using On1 Photo Raw. I have a video about it on my channel as well as a discount code if you're interested.
whats a good upgrade from this?
That is a really open ended question.
The answer would entirely depend on your needs of the camera.
Other things you want to check when buying used is:
1. Check the sensor for any scratches or damage. (MOST IMPORTANT)
2. Check the lens, viewfinder and display for any sort of damage.
3. Check the body for any sort of damage.
4. Check the battery compartment for any corrosion or damage. (same with battery)
5. Test the camera itself a couple of times. See if the photos look the way they should. (Does AF work?)
6. Test all the functions of the camera (buttons and all)
If all of those are in order, the essentials are covered. Of course something like a mistiming shutter is difficult to notice with quick tests like that, but you can only do so much when buying used.
£250ish with an 18-55 lense? Sound about right in 2024?
This camera... 🔥🔥🔥
Is it OK to buy this camera for 200€ with a fit lens , camera bag and 2 extra battery?
But come on man! How are you going to shoot a photograph on a DSLR using Live view. That's why they have those beautiful focus points in the viewfinder, which is also the spirit of all DSLR, shooting looking through pentaprimsa
I'm looking to buy one to take product pictures and outfits pictures for my second hand shop (nothing very serious or professional, i just want to have good quality). I found one of these cameras on marketplace with 7000 shots taken for $130. Do you think its worth it for this purpose and price? Thank you!
Doesn't sound bad at all. Throw a decent lens on that and you'll have great quality photos. Just be prepared to learn how to manually focus.
What is a good price for a used one?
That really depends on your specific market and the condition on the camera. The best price is something you can afford without it being close to something better or something new.
@@villerasku it was $300 in Ohio. With XIT lens kit. And a flash
Hello, with which phone camera can I compare the nikon d3400? Without any zoom.
With any decent lens, the photos will be better than any phone simply because of how sensors work.
Hey man, thanks for the video!
This and a few last videos on my channel were shot using this camera, and the lens was 35mm f/1.8G:
th-cam.com/video/Nu4axVgrtgY/w-d-xo.html
We handled the filming ourselves, and encountered some significant challenges, particularly with focusing and the absence of a gimbal. As a result, we ended up discarding approximately 95% of the footage :))) However, I believe the final picture turned out well, although I lack a basis for comparison as this was my first experience. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nah I hated it . I rather use my phone so I saved up for Sony a6400 and loved it ever since
