    I stumbled across your video while browsing youtube for tips on vintage nikkor lenses. Certainly wasn't expecting a fantastic class in beginner lens basics. Although I knew almost all the concepts you discussed, it is all a lot clearer now.
    And what a relief it is to listen to you talk about photography without irrelevant ranting like a few famous others.
    Subscribed and looking forward to a lot more knowledge from you.

    I bought the older Nikon 16-85 at the time for my d5100. I now use it on my d7200. I would recommend it to any Dx shooters.
    I presume the newer 16-80 is just as good. I've a number of primes which I never use ( the zooms have the flexibility, these don't).
    I will admit the quality of the images is superior. Cheers E

    Great video! My favorite lens for the d5500/d5600 is the Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 G. The field of view is perfect for street photography (about 52mm), and it's a great little lens for under $200. I like the 50mm, but it shrank the field of view to a point that was just to narrow for my taste, so I only use it on my FX nowadays.

    Hi Marteen, I am confused between the Nikon D610 and the Nikon D750.
    The D610 is available with a 50mm f/1.8 and battery pack WiFi adapter for 900 USD while the D750 body only is available for 1200 USD.
    Which camera is a better buy?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends. As the image quality is similar, unless you know that there are one or more features on the D750 that you will use, you should choose with your wallet and your hand (which fits better).

    Hi Maarten. Very informative and useful. I have the D5500 . It came with the kit lenses 18 - 55mm and 55 - 300mm kits lenses. I agree with what you say. I have added the 50mm 1.8. Excellent lens for the money. Great for portraits and in low light. I would like to add the 10 - 24mm. As for the camera, live view and the touch screen, with the ability to see the camera settings more clearly than a small window on top of the camera is a real bonus for someone who needs reading glasses.

    Thank you very much for your explanatory video! The comparison was very clear, and even though I couldn't totally understand the numbers in the begin of the video, I got the gist of the it! I am changing my D3200 by either a D5600 or a Canon 750D. As I already have a 50-200mm, and I love to shot portraits on 200mm, that has weighted in favor of the getting the D5600, so I can keep the lenses. If possible, I would like to know your opinion about what do you think make a better set for everyday photography and portraits: the Canon 750D + 18-55mm + 50mm (prime lens f/1.8) or the Nikon D5600 + 18-55 + 50-200mm. Thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither of those kit lenses are worth owning. What is behind your decision to upgrade to a new camera? Would you be equally happy just purchasing a better lens - for example, a nice 85mm prime will do more to improve your portrait quality than a new camera.

    • @diegodiasmachado
      @diegodiasmachado 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The D3200 got dust and few grains of sand inside while I shooting photos close to a helicopter in Italy. Fortunately the camera was insured, and I took the camera to a Nikon authorized assistance point to remove the dust/sand without worrying about cost. However, they decided to reimburse the equivalent of the price of the camera rather than fix it. I am not particularly worried about getting a weather sealed camera this time, because the circumstances where the camera got damaged were rather unusual and I don't think I will be using the new camera on a situation where weather sealing will play a major role. Another option I thought considering was a 77D. I could get it by about the same price of the 750D, but would come with no lens - only the body. In that case I would get a second hand 18-55mm STM lens to use the camera initially. The 750D, on the other hand, would come with a 18-55mm and a 50mm f/1.8.

    Newer 18-55mm lenses have a 55mm filter diameter and no manual switches for A/M and VR selectors. As for the AF-P, any 2016+ Nikon will be compatible with them OOtB. Cameras from 2015 such as the d3300, d5300, and d7200 will need a firmware upgrade to be fully compatible. Keep in mind that the d7200 will NOT have a firmware-based VR switch, so VR will be always on in the d7200.
    I have a d7200 and my lenses are:
    Prime: AF-P DX 35mm f1.8G
    General Purpose: AF-S DX 18-105mm f3.5 (this one is quite heavy)

    Actually I had read a blog which said:
    The new lens is made in Nikon’s factory in Thailand and its build quality is much as you’d expect for a mid-range lens. Size-wise it’s a good match for the D7100 body that was supplied with the lens for this review but would probably be a bit ungainly on smaller D5500 or D3300 bodies.

    That's a very good video!
    I would also recommend (for Nikon APSC beginners) the 35mm F1.8 which is VERY cheap but very good and also lightweight.
    In addition to that a used Nikon 10-24 or Tokina 11-20mm. If the 16-80 is too expensive, you can also go with a Sigma 17-70.
    One of the best ASPC lenses on the market is the Sigma 18-35mm, but it is also expensive and heavy. The old Nikon 17-55 is also very good (and cheap when you buy it used) but weights a lot. For travelling the cheap 18-200 Tamron is good if you are price sensitive.
    Always think about what you want to do with your camera and if weight is important (travelling, hiking, ...).
    --> And you can save a lot money when you buy used lenses!

    A quick question: With my current budget, I can either go with D7200 with 18-140mm OR go buy an inferior body like D5300 with 18-140mm and spend the deference on a basic prime lens like 50mm f/1.8 (or 35mm f/1.8 maybe?). Which way would you go for?

    The 35mm is a 50mm on full frame too? The problem I have is dealing with 2x crop factor - even with a speedbooster its only a a 1.42x crop factor and I'm at the point where I'm messing around with adapting an E-mount focal reducer to work with a m43 speedbooster for an effective 1.01x where even if it doesnt work out it'll work on the b-roll camera I'm getting. Could you make a suggestion on which you would pick between a Sony NEX 5N/5R 7 and a Sony a3000 - I'm leaning towards the 5N/5R which cost $150/180 respectively with their 25k iso but the 7 is $240 and gets an extra 8mp at 24mp and the a3000 puts me at 20mp for around $200. I do feel that a3000 is a little leaned out and bulky, and I don't know how well the cheaper plastic feel will settle with me. I think maybe there isn't enough of a difference between the second and third generation 5 to warrant the extra $30 so do I want to pay an extra $100 for an electronic viewfinder and +8mp? Or am I missing something about NEX 7?

      Nearly all manufacturers specify the focal length based on full frame. On a full frame camera, 35mm is 35mm. And after that I'm confused, as your comments don't seem to relate to this video.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly.

    • @smashtime1904
      @smashtime1904 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do know that -- although I do kind of wish lenses were all called by their 35mm equivalent so I didn't have to remember format in order to do an equation in my head for everything - m43 is easy enough with it just being double but having to do this in my head until I memorize it is a pain: (F÷2)3
      And I use a series of c-mount lenses too and don't even bother - I just know that my 4.8mm 2/3" lenses are ultra wide and fast and my 8-48mm f1.0 is even faster, parfocal, gives me the widest zoom range of any lens I have, and it's very very sharp.
      So further off the rails and back to tying this back in - I guess I misheard what you were saying about the full frame 35mm on full frame, and your part about crop sensors and effective/actual focal lengths is what got me started writing, where I was watching this while researching 35mm lenses. I'm comparing them to 28mm lenses and trying to figure out if I should go out of my way to get some of my 50mm lenses counterparts in 35mm over 28mm - for instance a Nikkor 28mm f3.5 can be had on the cheap - the 35mm not so much and its the same for just about every fast 50mm prime I have minus my Zeiss Pancolar f1.8 & f2(these are far more expensive in general it seems and so I look at Russian clones instead) and Vivitar(which is pretty reasonable all the way around).
      So with dealing with focal lengths and crop factors, different sensor sizes and lens adapters I started thinking I'm working really hard on trying to achieve something that is much easier when you have an APS-C sensor, and trying to figure out how to fill focal length holes in my lens collection would stop being such a chore and fiscally unreasonable: buy a Sony NEX camera and a focal reducer for it, then take the number of lenses I have, multiply them by 1.5 and now thats the amount of focal lengths I have at my disposal.
      So a 35mm lens is a very different lens to an SLR user, a DSLR user and a m43 user, focal reducers double what the crop sensors are capable of capturing and I like having options. So ya this no longer really pertains to this video aside from you briefly talking DX and FX differences and you having reviewed some(if not all) of the cameras I have in question.

In future it is possible that I may upgrade to full frame body (in 5-7 years). So I am confused between AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm F/4.5-5.6G ED VR & 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED. Moreover there is AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR f/34-8 which is not compatible with my present body but better than 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED. Please guide me.

      If you are planning to go to full frame, you'll need an FX (not DX) lens. I haven't used it, but this looks like a good choice. bhpho.to/2C66cBb. However, it does not have a very wide aperture and ramps when zooming. If you can be satisfied with 200mm, you will find lenses with wider apertures that don't ramp.

      However, the lack of E (as I learned in later reviews) did not mean that it would not work. I think that this lens will likely not support aperture adjustment in live view - but you'd have to check to be certain.

      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm always happy to help. "ED" (a glass coating) and "E" are not the same. Focus peaking is generally a function of the sensor/processor and is lens independent - so yes, that combination will work. Peaking can be useful for manual focus, but I do prefer an expanded view, which is available on the D5500.

    1.What's the difference between 50mm and 85 mm prime lenses? is the extra payment is worth enough?
    2. For macro, is the extension ring will serve the purpose ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1) The 85mm will get you closer - meaning the camera doesn't have to be so close to the subject, it's usually used for portraits in studio settings. You're probably not paying for the focal length, but for the quality of materials and construction - or the maximum aperture. For portraits the larger the aperture (i.e., the smaller the F number) the better.

      If you are taking portraits of people (or objects) a prime lens with a large aperture (that means F2 or an even smaller F number) will provide the nicest blurred backgrounds. I've only used the Nikon lens, but I would not see a large difference between these two. Although you can get a decent blur (use these six steps - th-cam.com/video/FgpHdMxv2rg/w-d-xo.html) I would not recommend these for that purpose.

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words and the subscription. It won't damage the lens - but if you point the lens directly at the sun (or another very bright object) it may - although mostly in liveview mode. When camera stores recommend UV filters, they're suggesting two things - one that the UV filter sits in front of the lens, making it less likely to get damaged, but also to reduce some haze that might be visible in some situations. If you're careful, it's not really necessary. I talked and demonstrated that here: th-cam.com/video/6n4zvDwcWt0/w-d-xo.html

    The 16-80mm lens is a very expensive upgrade to buy on its own, not quite so expensive when bought as a "kit" with some of the higher-end bodies. I've been using Nikon digital for about 14 years and my first upgrade to the lit lens was the older, slower 16-85VR which can now be bought used for not much money compared to the 16-80. I also have a used Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 which I think is a much under-rated lens. As good as the newer Nikon 16-80 but with slightly less zoom range, and I am impressed with the sharpness of my copy for under a third of the price of the Nikon.

    hello good night I would like to ask u a question. I have a nikon d3200 and Im not sure on buying a new lens or a new body full frame ( as you know nikon d3200 is crop sensor).Thank you and have an amazing day

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless there is a specific feature that another body has that you need for your photographs, I would invest in a lens, and since the full frame lenses are superior, and you think you might upgrade to full frame in the future, make it a full frame lens.

    • @lazaroblanco1177
      @lazaroblanco1177 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you very much...I have nikkor 50 mm F/1.8 and I would like a lens very sharp and for landscape ....do you think 18-105 mm would work for what I want?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose, but for higher quality I'd recommend an FX lens. If you're doing landscapes, a wider angle prime might be more suitable - I assume your dissatisfaction with the 50mm is that you can't capture the whole scene?

    • @lazaroblanco1177
      @lazaroblanco1177 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you right Sir, which lens would you recommend for my nikon d3200 to shoot landscape???

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    Hello,
    Iv had a question a little unrelated to the video. I am cofused in choosing my first camera. Between Nikon D5600 or Fujifilms XT 100. My main focus is landscape and night scape and Iv been using smart phone so far. As someone who has used both the cameras what's your opinion. I don't mind the weight or size of camera.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Either would be fine, with the right lens. For landscapes you generally want a wider angle. Let your wallet, your hand (how it fits) and your sense of style or brand preference guide you.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      It's not that they're not of any use - but they will not take full advantage of the FX sensor, as they only create a DX-sized image.

    I am still in confusion with choosing lenses . The main problem i face is in low light i don't want to use the flashlight. I did not get enough shutter speed even on increasing the noise. What should i do in order to get best night photographs. also i am unable to get closeups of insects and small objects. i have 70-200mm Af-S lens. Please help me out.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds as if you may need a faster lens. If your shutter speed is already down to 1/60 (probably the slowest you can handhold) and your ISO is already at 6400 (probably the most noise most of us will tolerate), there are not many options other than increasing the light, either with a flash or other source.
      For closeups of small objects, a macro lens is recommended.

    Oh...one other thing.
    I did buy a d5500 and returned it because when I updated the firmware the auto focus on my Sigma 18-200 quit working, which was a pity because I liked the camera.
    So you know of any fix, if so, I will buy the camera again.
    Thank you

      You need to get the firmware in your Sigma lens updated. I recently went from an old D40 to D3300 and I had to send 2 of my older Sigma lenses to Sigma UK for updating to work with the D3300 and newer Nikon bodies. There was a small charge basically to cover postage., and they turned them round within 2 days... I was without them for less than a week

    What is the default lens for the Nikon D7500? Is it the 18-140mm VR Lens? I ordered the camera from Amazon but just got it and there's no lens, just the body.
    I'm looking to do videos and photos, I just want the default lens.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's really no such lens, but what most people consider the standard focal range is something with a range from about 16-80mm. Nikon and third parties offer several options, I suggest you buy the best you can afford. There is a Nikon "kit" lens (the one you sometimes see bundled) but it's really a lower quality than this camera provides.

  • @samphelmailbox
    @samphelmailbox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    please help me out, as a beginner i'm planning to buy nikon d3400 and after watching your video i think i would go for 70-300mm lens and 50 mm lens as a prime lens , so i need to ask you is it good to go for 70-300 as a kit lens rather then 18-55mm lens.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd probably forgo all of those inexpensive lenses and get something better, like the DX16-80mm. A lens can and should last a lot longer than the camera - buy a good one. Unless you have a very specific purpose in mind, a nice general lens like this is an excellent starting point.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so few lenses of any quality under $250, that you're asking for the impossible. You should be able to take portraits at the 70mm end of the 70-300.

    which lenses do I need to take a clear photo of Hummingbird closer? thank you

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much are you prepared to spend? Do you have a DX or FX body? Where is the hummingbird? Generally, a longer lens (200mm plus) and a faster lens (F4 or less) is recommended. However, if you've created a hummingbird specific area in your yard with good lighting and can position the camera closer - you may be able to do with less.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I'd go with Nikon, Sigma or Tamron - but there are others. In a 35 or 50mm prime lens, a aperture larger than F2. is not hard to find. I don't have enough experience to recommend one, but there are several sites that do detailed lens reviews.

      hi thanks for your answer. Just want to ask you one more question. I do have Nikon d5300 as I mentioned you before, I do videography most of the time. so which lens is good for that ? I mean I do have 18-55mm VR, 18-200mm, one prime lens 50mm as well. 50 mm does great shoot but it is 50mm. I want to know which lens is best that covers landscape in HD mode.?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't take much to be good for landscape - but obviously a wider angle and higher quality will help you capture all the detail in a scene.
