Robert was more "wholesome" and digestible (less threatening) to certain audiences so TO SOME his success isn't as valid.....sad but (debatably) true.

I'm still amazed at how these guys with very little financial support can make classics that still are watched to this day. Raw, Hollywood Shuffle and the famous cult classic Five Heartbeats. Shows we're the chosen people of the book and the light of the world. We've always had to make a dollar out of 15 cent. I'm sad to say that the politically correct culture killed future classics. Comedy isn't comedy if you can't satirically pick on popular culture without being cancelled.

All three of those movies were loved by most black people. If you tell the average black movie lover that those movies were not successful or heavily criticized by movie critics they will be shocked. I know those movies so well I can recite full dialog from them. So eventhough they got slammed by Hollywood critics they are extremely popular with African American movie lovers, which was the audience they were made for.

Anyhoo… we might have to respectfully disagree because it’s obvious that holistically Black affiliated people take advantage of community in a way from people who have their blackness described for them, i.e. politically black people. At the end of the day, I only see one out of the five as Legendary anyway and he just passed away. Robert Townsend comes in at second and he definitely has given more opportunities to people of color, specifically black men, than any of those individuals… Besides Paul Mooney. I have receipts.

Why can’t we bring money together on this level and create something for Black creatives so they don’t have to wait for others to give them permission. I know there are platforms, but there should be one large platform. We don’t do well coming together.

Townsend telling the truth is probably why he didn't reach his full potential. I remember someone mentioned the Black Pack to Arsenio Hall while appearing on his show and Arsenio quickly chimed in that he was not a part of that.

It's not so much a "white comedians support each other and black comedians don't dynamic," because white comedians have rivalries too. However, if someone had made a concerted effort to lead "The Black Pack," they could have taken that energy to new heights: producing movies and television almost 20 years before Tyler Perry began doing that. Eddie Murphy had the talent and ability to lead the Black Pack, I just think he didn't have the desire to do it. He had his own thing and that was enough. That's kinda why he didn't wanna work with Spike Lee. Would "White Hollywood" have pushed back? Who cares, because audiences would have still showed up.
