When Jerri Curls hair started to dry up and the cop started to throw away his activator 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was in tears
Ay man! Give mah activator man!
YOU KILLED COOKIE HEAD JENKINS🤣🤣
Hollywood Shuffle is one of my favorite films. Thank you Robert & Keenan!
The ending of Hollywood Shuffle is golden. Man, I love that movie.
Townsend is the man! He's definitely one of the most underrated writers/directors ever. The great thing is that his movies and shows always had positive messages.
Completely agree there should be a movie on how he made Hollywood Shuffle, and I wouldn't mind a prequel to The Five Heartbeats
Robert Townsend...Nuff Said
I have an insane amount of respect for Robert Townsend. He truly is Hollywood royalty.
When my parents divorced and I would spend the weekends with my dad, Hollywood Shuffle on VHS was one of the many movies we bonded over.
One of the greatest movies in my lifetime.
By any means. We all have 1080p cameras and laptops at our fingertips. Determination.
Everybody isn’t talented tho. Can’t be having just any and everybody making movies
Roberts Brit English is amazing.
Old girl face was in shock!....I thought the video froze until I noticed everyone else still moving!....😂
Hollywood Shuffle is pure genius. I remember how revolutionary and groundbreaking this film was and is. If you enjoy movies or film making, you must watch this film. Robert doesn't get enough credit for making this movie. Thank you Robert!
If ever there was a living embodiment of my former school-Clark Atlanta University's-mantra, "I'll Find a Way or Make One", this story and Robert Townsend is it!
this is low key a master class on independent film making
I couldn't begin to state the laughs I have had from this movie from childhood to date... And now having seen this I don't know which one I love more- the movie or the story about how the movie was made. They are both incredible.
and STILL have on rewatches
I grew up in this and Partners, in Crime. This was next level. If they had done something, independent of the system, they would have replaced the system but I know they didn’t want to be sacrificed. They did something that cannot be replicated, because that feeling, no longer exists 😢
“if you’re not a man of your word, what good is your signature”. Might’ve been the realest Gem I’ve heard about this game.🔥🔥🔥🔥
He's one of my all time favorite people. Legend!
What a classic movie ❤🙏🏾🔥
Love that this is on The Roots page.
As a Black Man of 56yo, I can tell you this movie is SOLID✊🏾 One of the finest films on the Black experience ever produced.🙏🏾 LEGEND.
"Cause Ho3's Got To Eat Too"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of THEEE funniest lines EVA!!! Classic, Classic movie. This laid the ground work for I'm Gone Git You Sucka, In Living Color, AlLL his HBO Specials that were hilarious. A true comic genius who doesn't get his flowers🎉🎉
I've watched Hollywood Shuffle at least five times. Such a beautiful and brilliant film.
I love hearing stories of humble beginnings and just FIGURING IT OUT!! Got a dream, get to it and make it happen!
Brother Questlove thank you! Thank you for interviewing The Legend, Robert Townsend. This is very encouraging and enlightening to know that anything is possible!
Good interview. Very revealing and how a man keeps his words and people trusting him
Living Legend ❤ Hollywood Shuffle is a part of my childhood
Truly insightful and inspiring.
Batty Batty lol 🤣🤣 There's a 🦇 in my house! 😂😂, Winkie Dinkie Dawg! Lol,Hoe Cake 😂😂😂, Hollywood Shuffle is a instant Classic!! 🎉❤😂😊😅

"Goodbye Maurice...girl"
Can't like this enough thanks for sharing Robert and thanks Q
Eddie and Robert were inspirations!
They should make a movie ABOUT making Hollywood Shuffle
Robert Townsend is a legend and more so with his story on how he made Hollywood Shuffle at that time.
So after he made that movie was when HBO offered him a deal to make a comedy show on HBO which was amazing and just began the all stars of comedy and films that came from Robert Townsend's HBO comedy specials.
Plus it is amazing how the then pornographic industry was able to help his film which many people just don't realize how expensive the editing process can become and back then the porn industry was still using film before switching to VHS.
Please ask him about BAPs. I never find anything on him talking about the film.
For those who don't know what selling your soul means, he just explained it.
Absolute amazing film. This is also the 1st time I've heard of Kenyon being able to cook 😂
Great story!!!
Him & Melvin Van Peebles were true black trailblazers
This is so freaking awesome!!!
Anne- Marie Johnson was already a working actress in the early 80's? She played Todd Bridges girlfriend on an episode of Diff'rent Strokes in 1984 and she played Ernest Thomas's wife on What's Happening Now in 1985?
2024 and I'm just now watching Hollywood shuffle. I tried watching it in the past but could get past the first couple scene, I just didn't like it. But I watched this interview and found it on the roku channel and watched it all the way through for the first time and I laughed 😂 all the way through it, glad I watched it, great message and real funny👍🏾
Funny how things have their place and time. Glad you (finally) enjoyed...
Hollywood Shuffle is one of my favorite movies, and I haven't seen it in thirty years! I thought for sure Robert Townshend would be this huge director after that film, and he should have been. I was so naïve back then - I had know idea just how racist Hollywood was and still is.
AMAZING STORY! it goes to show that if you believe and have a conviction in what you want to do you can do it. Robert is a legend in my book. One thing I would like to know is what happened. It seemed as though blacks were making great progress for a time in hollywood. Robert, the Wayans, Spike amongst others who were do well but it seems as though there is a drought now. Maybe I'm wrong or just out of the loop as I don't really watch TV or movies these days. I did see the Vince Staples have a show on Netflix.
Greates indie comedy of all time
Why don’t they let him talk and finish describing what it was about. Why do they have to keep interrupting the guest? Stop that. Where is Shay Shay?
Classic!
Love that movie.
Legendary!
This is crucial!!
I don't think I've seen Townsend really on any podcast...but we can be sure Vlad will try to have him in a few months. The good news is that all these years later one of the guys who played one of the "pimps" from that iconic incident that inspired Townsend to depict it in the movie, now has a youtube channel Zoom to Thailand, brother Richie Mac, after a solid Hollywood career. But so many people got a career jump start because of this movie.
We try to get the exclusives. Robert says in the full interview that he does not do podcasts. We are so grateful to have him.
@@QLSProducerWell that really was a good catch, congratulations.
@@BobKnight-mm2ze We're simply grateful to Robert
Man I loved this movie. Was way to funny lol
Who is the woman in this podcast I love her energy
This is inspiring
I thought about Hollywood Shuffle when I saw the movie American Fiction.
same...
This man is one of my comedy heroes....Eddie Murphy Raw..Hollywood Shuffle and I'm Gonna get you Sucka kicked off the black comedy wave that folks are still riding today...
"toooooommmmmy"
"there work at the post office" - kevin samuels use to say this all the time, i just found out he got it from this movie, i watch the whole movie today, winky dinky dog.
West side of Chicago stand up , the Goat ✍🏽✍🏽💪🏽💪🏽🫡🫡
Attack of the street pimps lol
Nowadays they all sell out
Drake Ice Spice Nikki Minaj fantasia Taraji - they all sell out
Illest story ever told
Is American fiction an update of American Shuffle from a different, internal take? I wonder what that filM was that Townsend was auditioning for?
Almost every movie the Black man has a gun in his hand
He was wrong it was 10 mins in Super 16 at 400 feet. I think it was wayyyyyyy less in 35MM. 35MM was 1000 feet per 10 mins.
he had 60 bands saved in the 80s....sheesh
😳😳😳
