BUPROPION (WELLBUTRIN): Treatment for Depression/What are the Side Effects?

  • Bupropion or Wellbutrin is a medication that is used to treat Depression. Get a Doctors perspective and learn the symptoms of depression and how this medication can play a role in you treating it. You'll learn about both common and some of the more rare side effects that you should watch out for.
    Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is in the family of medications called Norepinephrine Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRI). They influence the amount of Norepinephrine and Dopamine that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
    With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
    If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
    We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor.

    I started 150 mg two months ago and my life has changed so much. I also did six months of psychotherapy, attended a support group, and have been taking magnesium and turmeric supplements daily, as well as omega-3 and a multivitamin. my anxiety and depression are SO much better. my ADHD symptoms are now manageable and I feel so much more at peace in my life. it’s been an amazing transformation. I’m 32 and I finally feel like a normal person.

I found a Psychologist that took an hour with me explaining how everything work. I was shocked when I saw an hour had gone by I was wondering how long will I be here ? This happened after 3 years of in & out of mental health hospitals too . I still take Wellbutrin after 10 years. I'm not aware of side effects from this. I do from my SSRi .

I felt like I was drowning.. I took the step and searched for help outside of my comfort zone and found a great therapist who told me I was dealing with severe depression and repressed thoughts and memories that still affect me on a subconcious level... she recommended this medication...now i've been on bupropion for about 2 weeks and my life has completely changed.. im generally in such a great mood , full of energy , dont care to smoke ...I can honestly say this medication has helped give me control of my life again and feel like a normal person ... I feel the urge to do things I love again and on the contrary I feel like my anxiety is almost non existent... if you're dealing with depression do yourself the favor and seek guidance , we all need help every now and then.

      How does Wellbutrin feel compared to adderall/stimulants?
      I have ADD and anxiety/depression, and have been on stimulants for a decade.
      Now, the side effects of adderrall-horrible anxiety, overactive CNS, etc- have gotten really bad for me, and I am trying to stop adderall.
      Adderall has become way too intense for me even at a low dose, and is wreaking havoc on my body and causing dealt bad anxiety every day.
      My doc suggested Wellbutrin. I am concerned that it will feel just like adderall, with all the similar side effects I am trying to get away from.

      How does Wellbutrin feel compared to adderall/stimulants?

      Now, the side effects of adderrall-horrible anxiety, overactive CNS, etc- have gotten really bad for me, and I am trying to stop adderall.
      Adderall has become way too intense for me even at a low dose, and is wreaking havoc on my body and causing dealt bad anxiety every day.

    Hi, thank you so much for this video, very informative. I have a question if that’s alright, I’ve been on mostly all SSRI’s(+ 2 SNRI’s) for 2 years that made me feel good in the beggining, but then made me feel numb and put a lot of weight on. I decided to try wellbutrin as I’ve done some research and my psychiatrist agreed to put me on it, even though I felt like she didn’t know much about it. I’ve been taking it now for a little over a week, and I’ve been feeling angry/irritated a lot lately by the littlest things, and I usually am a really calm person, plus my depression is worsening day by day I feel like. Should I keep taking it for another week to see if this improves, or shall I stop it? It’s quite hard to get in touch with my psychiatrist to ask. Thank you in advance

      With Bupropion I found it took around 5-6 weeks before I felt consistently better for what its worth. I would definitely recommend it over SSRI's though, which are pretty worthless drugs that are often associated with severe, long-term side effects like sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, etc.

  • @standardname5993
    @standardname5993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Well, in my case (moderate-severe depression) Wellbutrin was extremely effective. While I not only suffered severely from the painful symptoms of depression, but was also unable to work and was at risk of having my cognitive abilities permanently impaired, my condition improved greatly just a few days after starting Wellbutrin (150mg XR). Specifically, I had no negative changes in thinking and perceptions, or negative changes in my personality. I felt a certain euphoric effect (thought that's what cocaine must feel like) but otherwise not like being on drugs. I also noticed that I seem to have suffered from mild social anxiety all my life, which I only became aware of when the drug made it go away. Also, I only had certain side effects (itchy skin, and the feeling of a slightly altered self-perception) for the first week, during the changeover process, which then went away. Now, after several months of taking the drug, I have slowly stopped taking it. At the moment I am still a bit more tired than before, which is logical because the drug had a stimulating effect, but I no longer experience any symptoms of depression. I can only report positive things about the drug, it has served its purpose without side effects. The biggest drawback seems to me that there is no 75mg XR dosage, which on the one hand would facilitate tapering (the tablets should not be split), and after the decline of acute depression would be a perfectly adequate dose for maintenance therapy to prevent relapse over a period of time.

    Not sure if it's possible but three days on and I think I might already be experiencing a powerful, positive change. It feels like every time I start to have intrusive thoughts, it feels like I now have an angel on my shoulder (figure of speech) that quickly tells me to dismiss them as the nonsense they are, which I can now easily do. Intrusive, self-diminishing and anxiety-inducing thoughts have long been a HUGE challenge for me.

    my boyfriend has been on this medication for approx 4 years. currently Wellbrutrin 300mg (two 150mg a day) over the last 5-6 weeks he has been experiencing extreme abdominal pain. at first it was just episodes right after taking the the medication and now he cant eat or drink practically anything without feeling a high level of pain/discomfort. He talked to his GP however, not much they can do because of covid-19. Waiting for a scope. We ended up in the ER a few days ago. Bloodtest, Urine test, ekg, ultrasound of liver, kidney, pancreas, gallbladder, all came back normal. By keeping a journal we have narrowed down that it is much worse after he takes wellbrutrin. But I'm not doing great on lexapro and am having some side effects. I have some symptoms of ADHD inattentive type, I'm a smoker, and I'm obese. So I wanted to try this drug to see if serotonin wasn't the chemical I needed balanced out .... but now I'm afraid my PCP will say no on Wednesday when I go to see her because it isn't meant for anxiety and can make it worse. • @ErikRichardsonDO
      @ErikRichardsonDO  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Contrave contains bupropion and a medication called naltrexone which is a medication that we use as an antidote to narcotic overdose. The exact mechanism of how the combination of the two work isn't really known but its felt to have something to do with the reward centers of the brain and cravings and decreasing those. Bupropion alone isn't quite as effective as the two together however it is a lot cheaper! Thanks for watching!

      It can be an adjunct to helping with weight loss but it isn't the cure all. Sometimes when medication starts working and helps us loose weight we can get a little more comfortable with being able to loose the weight using the medication as one of the things that is helping us loose instead of finding what our body needs to be able to do to get the weight off. Focus on the basics of avoiding refined sugars/carbs and just like any addiction it will lessen over time. good luck!

    On for 2 months. Only real complaint is the increase anxiety. Racing heart, feeling doomed, roller coaster drop feeling in the gut... ugh it’s annoying. Feeling happier and mood is better. Feeling more energetic also. At first I had no appetite for like 2 weeks. But now able to eat, but eating less. Food isn’t exciting to me any more. Was able to concentrate better, but still have moments where my brain is just like BLAHHH- and blank smh hoping that gets better..

    My doctor has added Wellbutrin XL 150mg to my Sertraline 100mg. What is your opinion on adding this to Sertraline? I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression years ago.

    I started feeling as if a weight was pulling me into deep depression and a dark place. I did not even take it for one week.

    im 50, I been fighting with depression since teenager, but just because I strongly believed after seen 3 Psychiatrists in my 20's after listening to the BS they say, and taking the Ambien and Prozac for some time, quit seen them and taking medicine...I thought "I have to win this battle, my facking brain can't win, Im stronger" but after I retired last year from an Operations Management job that I had for 25 years, I saved enough to retire at 50, but now my brain has gone "cuckoo" now I don't want to go out of the house, I gained 10 pounds in a year, Im afraid to drive, I have no energy nor passion to do anything.. WTF? SO my wife toke me to a Psychiatrist again so today Im taking my first Bupropion pill, hopefully will help me fight this fricking disease.. the Doc said ...find another job, you are just to young to be at home all day, after 25 years of continuous stress, where my last 10 years I managed 500 people, he said my brain is in shock on NOT HAVING STRESS... WTF? For excessive stress I saved so I could retire early... weird fricking brains

    My doctor has prescribed this medicine for my anxious episodes of eating a lot, do you think it will help me lose weight? I am taking fluoxetine also for depression.
    You said that this medicine has something wrong with it, did I understand it correctly?

    I don't do well with the serotonin ssri's because it makes me into a zombie! I started taking bupropion almost 20 years ago for SAD. I experienced zero side effects & find the medicine a life saver I can safely tolerate. People may have trouble sleeping & dry mouth at first but the minimal side effects pass quickly. For me bupropion helps with other meds to allow me to sustain normal wakefulness due to narcolepsy confirmed in a sleep lab. I'll never stop taking it.

    I've been taking Bupropion for about a month now and it's amazing how much of a difference its made in my mood. The only issue I'm having with it right now though, is that I cannot fall asleep for the life of me, and sleep aids rarely help. I havent been able to fall asleep before 4 AM for weeks

      Ask your doctor for lorazepam, they'll only prescribe you these if you have tried just about every option there is.
      They also help for anxiety.

    Thank you for this video, I have always felt ashamed of being diagnosed with depression. But what you said about it, that depression is as just as valid and just as important to treat, like say...diabetes - well that made me look at it differently. Wellbutrin is working for me, and the fact that it has been around a long time assures me that it is safe. Amitriptyline nearly killed me! BUT having said that, everyone is affected differently. The main thing you said which is so so important is, open up & talk with your doctor if you need help - don't be ashamed - and follow up with how you're feeling if you do decide to take an antidepressant 🙂👍

      It's really difficult, you're standing in front of a doctor who studied 7-10 years and has a lot going in and you gotta tell him that you're depressed. It feels really downgrading :(

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@46Bax It only feels downgrading if you think it does. There is nothing wrong with admitting and asking for help (Yes I know, I grew up in a world where as a man you should or should not be or do certain things. Well that was wrong and that's partly why we are where we are)
