Chickens know what they're doing. I planted a bunch of skip laurel bushes in my backyard. Had them back there for years. Somebody told me that every part of that plant is toxic. I freaked out, planned on tearing them all out, etc. because I had chickens running around my backyard. Then I calmed down and realized the chickens had been back there for four years and haven't died yet, so I'm not gonna worry about it.
Great information. I already have your list of herbs that are beneficial and a treat for chickens. I wrote down every item on todays list, Thank you again guys!
We have sour oranges that fall off the trees, and the chickens ignore them. They do like the loquats and star fruit, and try to get the low hanging ones off the trees. Fortunately, or sadly for us,our avacado tree has not fruited since planting, but maybe this year or next. Thank you for the great information.
Rhubarb… Two Springs ago,my chickens literally devoured every rhubarb leaf my plants produced. I found out later that summer that some chicks I had gotten from someone else were massively infested with 3 to four inch ROUNDWORMS,because these chicks were raised with horses that also were full of worms. I know rhubarb leaves are not safe for chickens to eat but they never touched them before & haven’t touched them since. Is it possible that they were eating the rhubarb leaves in order to self treat themselves for the worms? The worm infested chicks were thrice treated with veterinary supervision,& then returned to their original owner. I deverminize my flock at least 4x/yr.,& last year they didn’t touch the rhubarb. Coincidence? Not a single chicken got sick or died from eating the rhubarb leaves, but there were a disgusting and alarming amount of very large worms passed after the chickens ate the rhubarb leaves
There was what looked like soybeans in the commercial scratch grain I bought. I thought it was odd so I looked at the ingredients on the bag but it didn't list beans at all. It was Producer's Pride from TSC.
It can all be summed up, very concisely. It comes down to quantity. It's the only thing your chickens have access to or these foods, then yeah they might have a problem. But I have thrown every bit of this stuff, except for sugar and oil into the compost pile and never had a chicken die. I tear out my garden and throw it all in there including tomato plants, etc. and they have no issues with it. Birds are smart. If they have access to good stuff they will eat it and they will ignore the bad stuff.
This is the first time I’ve seen one of your videos. Excellent video! Thank you so much for breaking it all down the way you did. I’m a subscriber now!
Thanks for the video, very informative. You mentioned that uncooked beans are unsafe. Are other member of the legume family ok to feed uncooked such as peas?
Thank you so much, I feed my hens, beans, rice, pasta well cooked. Also grains, barley and I spread around diatomaceous earth food grade let me know what you think? Been feeding them this for 3 years now, seem heathy. Laying a lot of eggs year round 6 hens
We have a number of videos about feeding chickens in our chicken playlist, and we even have one about breaking broody hens: Breaking A Broody Hen: Why You Need To…& How To Do It th-cam.com/video/Og4pv83WfHQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks gentlemen! As an RN - which makes you a perpetually annoying child - I always NEED to know the "why?".......as well as boldly talking about bowel movements.
You know what else you shouldn’t feed them?!? The black foam insulation off your AC lines! Mine discovered the foam and pecked most of it off exposing the copper pipes! Scared me to death, but luckily it did not hurt them or their eggs. Crazy birds! 🙄
Not sure how you could go about getting the birds to eat coffee? They don't like it period. I use straight coffee grounds in my coops for bedding and harvest every couple or three weeks for other use. The birds roost in the coop, the girls go back to lay eggs and other than that they're always outside. My roosters don't allow lollygagging around in the coop anyway. Don't know why that rule exists but it is what it is.
Thank you for putting this concise list together. This will make a handy reference for anyone with a hobby flock and should be bookmarked.
Glad you liked it!

Given plenty of well-balanced, good and healthy foods, chickens will often eat exactly what they need.
Thank you- but I can't imagine someone feeding chocolate, cookies, and desserts to their chickens.. 😂

I often feed peas fresh from the garden as a treat for the flock. No problem there.

Aubrey's chickens for over 20 years who would give a chicken a raw Bean
I core my apples so they don't get the seeds
Hair cut ? Good nice 😂

Are spent grains from a microbrewery ok? It would have some potential alcohol in it…
I would probably avoid anything with alcohol in it
