- Ever wondered how to paint a sailboat? I rolled and tipped Pettit Easy Poxy Sailboat paint but I cheated and made it even easier to paint a sailboat! I let you know which sanders worked and didn't work sanding a sailboat, apply vinyl stickers to my sailboat, and which products I used to sand and clean and paint my sailboat are covered.

For boat painters this video is a real gem. Thanks Jim
Lady K looks Great!!!
For random orbital sanding, always get a long flexible hose hooked up to a bucket (cyclone) trap and then to a shop vac. (Don't overthink fitting hoses and the tool just use duct tape. Hose goes over your shoulder.) This keeps the dust under control, but it also keeps it out of the sand paper grit so your sanding is more efficient.
Always us vacuum cleaner bags in the shop vac. If the one you bought doesn't have this option? Just duct tape them in. Been doing if for years. The cyclone trap catches most of the dust, the bag catches the rest and the pleated filter on the shop vac never gets clogged up so you never lose power.
Also wear a respirator and a Tyvex suit. A respirator is 100%, paper dust masks, even good ones don't work nearly as well. You want to keep the dust out of your lungs.
For shaping: Get a long belt sander belt, 4" wide and cut it, then split it lengthwise. Get cut a piece of 1/4" plywood put handles on the ends. Just copy the tool that's like this. Glue one strip on it. This will shape your hull patches 'fair.' You can then use the finer grits.
And grits. Always step through the grits. If you start with 40, go 60, 80, 100, 120, 150/180, 220. It could take you weeks to remove 60 grit scratches with 120 paper. What you'll find is that you need a lot of the lower grit pads and not very many of the higher grit numbers. And don't wait until the sandpaper is gunked up to replace it. As soon as the 'tooth' in the abrasive is worn off it's done. Painting is of course 90% prep, 10% painting. Replacing sandpaper sooner saves a lot of time and effort.
David Lee, TH-cam channel, who fixed a Lagoon 450, is the expert on dust control. (I gave him all the tricks I learned over 50 years, and he improved every one of them. )
Great to hear you use a roller extension pole. Why oh why do so many TH-camrs never use them??
The 'swirlies' mxers. Good tip. I've tried to bootleg drill mixing tools. Not worth it. Just buy them. Well worth it.
Mixing epoxy? I always use a cheap gram scale ($10 on Amazon). I drape saran wrap over the top. Make sure you look up the mix ratios by weight. (Different than volume). I've made simple spreadsheets for the two West System Hardeners. You only need 0 to 10 in 0.1 or 0.2 increments. (grams, ounces, pounds... the ratios are all the same. "1.1" can be 1 gram, 11 grams, 1.1 kg or 1100 pounds) Column 1 is resin, Column 2 is hardener, column 3 is total weight. One page per hardener. Color code it with highlighters and laminate them, or seal them in a baggie. Beats those pumps cold. With the cheap gram scale you can mix tiny amounts or all the way up to 500g (l lb). If you go over with the hardener it's easy to fudge a bit more resin to make it work. Once you try this you'll never do it any other way.
I can tell you know what you're doing. You have the heavy duty filler. I've seen TH-camrs attach hardware with lightweight fillers. The instant pancake mix I've used on occasion is better for this than any lightweight filler.
And white vinegar is cheap and makes a great 'thinner' for epoxy clean up. I drop the cheap 'chip brushes' in it and use them over and over.
Thanks for the tips!
Hey WillN2Go1 what city your shop in?

As a house painter, doubling back like you did when rolling is called “back rolling” and is the most effective way to paint… even your house. It is like 1.5 paint coats in one go. The orange peel is usually because of too much paint on the roller, but doubling back tends to remove it. Sounds like a rough product to work with, but great results 👍
Iam jealous of the small box you use for fiberglass repair. Mine consists of an entire job box plus a good chunk of real-estate in my garage.
If you apply soapy water (dawn) under your decals be fore applying them, then you can adjust them, and it helps remove the air bubbles.
You didn’t cheat….you adapted and overcame, and it looks great!
Purple and Green compliment each other very well. Beautiful job! It's going to take me a while to get used to the new colors . . . kinda like a new hair cut!
Love it, great color scheme!
Thanks so much!
she looks splendid love the finish
Thanks so much!
Like the 3 panel solar bimini good idea
It's just a lot of sanding. You nailed it there. That's what people really need to know.
Wow! Lady K is beautiful in her purple and teal. 💜💚
Sweet Boat! Venison sausage and backyard eggs, scrambled, locally roasted coffee (less than a week ago) brewed strong and drunk black, here in the Northern Rockies. After 40 years on the water I am now happily landlocked. I do enjoy every video of yours. Thank you for your work. ~~Bone
Thanks so much for watching!
Well done Tim!
Thanks!
color ooks like the jimmy buffett surfari 50. i saw it in sag harbor a couple of years ago
Great video which has given me confidence to tackle my boat paint project ... 🇬🇧
Loved this Tim.
Thanks for watching!
Important to note: DO NOT mix polyester resin in a solo cup… tried this and after a few minutes the bottom of the solo cup dissolved and had to deal with the subsequent mess. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip!
Good Job Tim
Thank you!
Tim, one word. AWESOME!
Thanks!😊
Wow, the paint job looks great. Nice vibrant colour choices. 👌🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job. Looks great!!
Thanks!
Good job Tim!
Thanks!
Looking great
Thank you! Cheers!
A lot of work. Nice job, she looks great. Boy, that hour travel sucks! My garage is a mess as well twice a year, launch and haul out. Fortunately the house is 3 km from the boat, however, I'm always "out of time as well".
Again, well done, you worked hard.
Thank you for watching!
Weeee Doggie You aced it Tim... Lots of work but know you can say Wham A Jam A~ Let's go sailing...
Looks great!
Thanks!
Awesome job Tim. She looks beautiful. Congratulations
Grind off the tip of the spade bit, can’t use the bit as a drill after, but it’s a perfect mixing bit.
Ok thanks!
Fantastic job Tim! Lady K looks stunning! Beautiful color.
Thank you kindly
Hi I been watching you forever love your channel can you do a video of pros and cons of a sail drive thank you fair winds
Looks nice!
Thanks!
Smartest looking boat in the lot
Loving it
Thanks!
Love that color! Perfect for the islands. Get her back down there!
Love this guys show , I’m doing all the homework I can to learn about sailing , bought a 43’ boat in Titusville off Craigslist for 10k
Went down a month ago for two weeks and (long story short) got the motor running and anchor working . I want to take it out on the ICW but now it’s hurricane , hoping to maybe sell mine later and get a final one in three years to “retire “ on , - much love
You can do it!
Super basic question for painting, sanding, even for just cleaning a hull. How do you get even results with the hull in contact with supports? Do you have to get the boat hoisted into different positions after each round of work so you can get to the contact points that you couldn’t reach before?
If you notice- those little metal contact points are only touching the black bottom paint- not the blue sides of the boat. I painted the bottom with black ablative bottom paint (separately) - did the best I could to fill in around the metal stands - then when the boat is lifted to go in the water, you can just dab a little on those spots- it really doesn’t make much of a difference
I’m in the UK and I painted my boat at the time with ordinary Dulox house paint, it looked great, it still looked great 18 months later when I sold it. It lived in Poole quay on the river Tamar, definitely salt water.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the new color and purple!!!! Yes, sailing today was no bueno, our race was cancelled. Hoping to sail tomorrow.
Enjoy! 😊
Nice Ship My Guy
Looks great!❤
Thank you! 😊
As a woodworker, 3M Cubitron sandpaper is the best. A bit more expensive, but with wood, you save time and go thru less sandpaper. Plus it’s a net so there’s no holes to line up. Is it better sanding a boat than cheap sandpaper? My money is on the Cubitron.
Hook up your shop vac to that sander. Your sandpaper and lungs will last longer.
one brand that I always recommend, cheap and really great! Is Wesco! Give a try on this brand when you have opportunity
Looks great Tim. Never used Petit but looks like it came out great. After having sanded and repainted my deck 2 years ago and the bottom this year I’ll echo the amount of sanding needed….you’re never quite prepared for how much. lol. I used the same dewalt sander and I’m convinced it’s indestructible. I couldn’t believe the abuse it took. I’ll also echo the epoxy kit as I have one too having done 2 deck repairs and it’s a must. I used Total Boat Total Fair vs the watertight and was great. I echo the sanding pads and paint swirlie mixer from Amazon. Great video Tim and all of your suggestions are really helpful. Anyone thinking about doing it should just do it. It’s not that hard just takes time. You’ll be proud of the results and save a pile of money!
Thanks so much for watching!
Awesome look. Wow I love that green color. Great job Tim. Congrats
Thanks so much!
Glad that guy said it’s green for the colorblind people.
Looks great Tim!
She came out beautiful! Great job!
Thank you! 😊
Now this is what we all need, (knowledge) and the will to do it yourself, just a tip when I paint I try to tint my undercoat if posable to a light top coat color when I know I will only do one top coat.
But I love the black bottom and the boat looks amassing, we done Tim,
Thank you!
Glad you didn't paint the topsides black that's nothing but trouble south , painting is painting as you mentioned , if that's your job it is still a job if it's your boat it's a longer job 🙂
Well done. It is a daunting task to paint a boat for sure. I personally prefer spraying because you use less paint and get much better results, but not everyone can do this.
I scraped then sanded 20 years of hard blue bottom paint off a mid '80s 36 ft boat. My shoulders ached.
Watching the first part of your video the pain came back. With the top sides: and then some.
It is a big job.
Nailed it again Tim! Great video!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tim, that color was the color of our 1st sailboat Morgan 24. She is beautiful! Really nice job and good to know about the sander to use.👍 Happy Sailing ⛵
Thanks so much for watching!
Love the new color Tim, you did a great job.
Thanks so much!
Porter cable random orbital sander, 6". Model 7336 (new is 7346). Variable 6 speed gentle or powerful. Handle can be used on either side or not at all. Buy the vacuum kit so a shopvac will suck up the dust as you sand. Used on Ebay is fine as mine has done not just a repaint, but the bottom and many projects (indestructible). New is a 7346, but do they make them like they use to? Tipping did make it smooth and glossy......
Good color combo! I Would recommend a clear coat, will protect the orange peel from blistering and the vinyl corners from lifting
Thanks for the idea!
GREAT!
Thanks!
Awesome tips and great color scheme! Will the registration numbers fit above the turtles?!
It should
OMG, those colors are popping awesome and i L.O.V.E. the Turtle!!!! Your Boat looks so neat!!! 🥰😍🤩💜💙💚🐢
Yay! Thank you!
Looks good sir! Good tips, liked and added to a Playlist for when I take on this project. Fair winds skipper!
Awesome, thank you!
That’s pretty cool!
good job on the paint
Beautiful! Well done. Good video too.
Thank you very much!
That looks great Tim!
Thanks 👍
Purplicous! Looks great, man. Love the turtles.
Thanks!
Well everyone will know who owns that boat . One thing I have heard is white colour boats are cooler in the summer sun
Looks great, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I love to see a truck getting really used. Im going to miss my tacoma when i sell it, but my boat is getting new thru-hulls and bottom paint!
OhhO HOhoo man.. That's looking really sweet. Very nice, Tim. Very niiice..
Thanks 👍
What a great video!and im very impressed with the painting what a great job!
Thanks for watching!
For us colour challenged people what actual green colour is it and who did the decal and lettering? Thanks the job turned out looking very professional.
Thanks! The colour is called seafoam, the decals were made by a local company called Impact Graphics and signs
! tip I would give, is to stray soapy water on the boat, before placing the vinyl stickers. this makes getting air bubbles out, so much easier
Thank you for the advice!
Nice!🤙
Thanks! 😁
Boat looks great, I really like the color
Thanks 👍
nice job - I love the colour!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I guess this is a little late. But if it's warmer than the 72 degrees could have thinned your paint a little more. I've painted the same product at 90 degrees. You'd have to add thinner as needed in roller pan as the heat reduces your paint the longer it sits in the pan. Then no orange peel. She looks like a new boat.
Thanks for the tips!
Nice work. I like the graphics 👍
Thank you 👍
Good to get all the info but idk about those colors man.
Could have guessed you would be the type of guy to lower a Z71, but all kidding aside great job lady k is looking sharp bud!
🤣
Great job Sir!
Thank you kindly!
There's mastercraft logo's on some of the epoxy... you get them at Canadian Tire?... for context, i'm in Quebec.
Yup! 😎
Looks great. The link for a consult doesn't seem to be working and was wondering how we can get I touch? Sent a pm.
Looks good!
Thanks so much!
The colour's are interesting
I've used paint rollers, and telescoping extensions for my paint rollers. But the last time I put on bottom paint I cut off a bit of broom handle to make a 14" extension for my paint roller. Even the shortest telescoping extension is too long and too bulky, when I'm down on my back under the boat, but the unextended roller just doesn't quite reach. Just a simple modest extension can make things easier.
Good idea!
For power tools, I favor Makita the most, followed by Milwaukee and Dewalt, which are both superb. . . . . Hook and loop sanding pads can be obtained in 40 grit.
ALWAY wash and scrub new roller sleeves and chip brushes because they will have stray fibers from the factory.
Make sure to have plenty of rags and NO DIRTY LIPS on paint cans. Clean as you go and when you put the top back on the top of the can and the groove in the lid must be clean.
Appl first coats of primer and paint as thinly as possible, with subsequent coats getting thicker so they will expand more than lower coats when it gets hot.
It says on the can you can repaint in 24 hours, but you're better waiting longer, days longer.
I need to paint my Catalina 25 this fall. She has been in the water for 2 years… time to get dirty. Maybe orange will be the new hotness!
boat is looking great man
Thanks!
Nice job ❤
Thanks 😆
She's looking good Tim.
Thanks!
good job😀😀😀
❤❤❤
Great job. How did you paint under the boat stands? Did you just keep moving them around?
Thanks! The stands were only under the bottom- which I painted with black ablative- the tiny bits that didn’t get done, I was able to dab at once Lady K was up in the sling before launching
Purple and green bootline ?
Hello I have 2 questions. Where is Grenada exactly and where are you right now? I got a post Reddit saying there is a Hurricane there.
Grenada is in the Caribbean and I am currently sailing in Canada on the Great Lakes
Great job! What kind of bottom paint did you use? Hard or soft.
Always soft ablative. Love it for the ease of ownership.
I LOVE it!! Kudos
Thanks!
Personally, not the colours I would choose.. (Orange or Yellow with Flat black would be mine) but it looks like it turned out pretty well! Meanwhile, my white boat will stay white, because no time!
Nice
Looks more than good enough.
I have a question about IOR boat classes, such as quarter-ton, half-ton, three-quarter ton, and on.
I wonder what these ratings were based on. They seem tho have no direct dimensional connection to the actual boat size or proportions.
My working theory is that these ratings are based on likely crew weight. A quarter-tonner, for example, is like to have three to four crew members on race day. If I go by the old assumption that the average weight per crew member is roughly 150 lbs. The numbers seem to check out.
A half-tonner would then have a crew of five to seven members.
Does this make any sense to you?
Sure does. One many boats it had to do with crew weight. We should do an episode on this and see if we can find and old timer that was involved back in the 70s!
Absolutely worth doing this process if you enjoy it. Otherwise you are way better off hiring someone to do it and spend the same time working over time.
