“They paint and film everyday just like a professional athlete. So if I wanted to be a professional artist, then I should stop being scared of making artistic decisions. Maybe I should start creating without a spark.”🔥
I wonder if the "spark of creativity" metaphor is often used without understanding that sparks are caused by objects colliding with force. For the metaphor to hold, effort would precede the spark of creativity. And often that effort is simply the making of the next decision that enables the possibility of creativity.
I used to think holding myself to a strict schedule was necessary. Like you said "atheletes train everyday, why shouldnt I?" I drew for hours every single day for years. I got better and Im happy with my skill level. But I wasnt happy with my art. I wasnt happy in life either. I told myself if I got better I would be happy. If I drew everyday that meant I was serious and if I didnt then I wasnt serious about my art. But I was sad regardless, I felt like my passion was slipping, yet I was drawing quicker and more beautifully than I ever had before. Ive found, in my journey, that I was misguided. Some people want to be "the best". To those out there who want that, go for it. Be the best. But i think anyone who is reading this should consider their goals. You dont *need* to draw everyday to be happy with your art. It will help you improve, sure, but is that your goal? To simply improve ad infinitum? Do you even need to improve to convey the things you want? The improvement mentality helped me a lot, but I am much happier now putting those lessons to use in my true passion, my comic. I hope you guys reach your own goals in your art journey.
Insanely real, being in school has made me realize that tighter schedule helps push out the creative ideas itself whereas during summer I find myself trying to hard to brainstorm and stuck up with nothing
Nah fr. it's like that dilemma where if someone was immortal, then they would have so much time to do nothing. It's the deadlines and responsibilities that push us
Remember kids, perfectionism is giving yourself the excuse not to do anything. Consistency if more important, because you will naturally improve over time. Don't ever let a lack of talent prevent you from being successful.
❤ Piece of advice if you want it: Think about what video you watched last. If you can't remember the exact title or even concept. Then you shouldn't be watching TH-cam
This book is a game changer, I imagine, for most people. If there's any book I recommend any creative, or anyone looking to be skilled in anything, it's this one.
Okay boundary king 👑 “Creating without a spark. Show up and get started!” The amount of videos I’ve scrapped because they’re “not good enough” and the amount of sleep I’ve lost when I have nothing to show for is crazy. Will definitely need to try this method. This is an impressive video to make in 7 days!
I don't usually comment on TH-cam videos because I rarely have something meaningful that I want to add besides just complimenting someone's work. But this one, this video just hit me right in the spot, man, and the tears just started falling... I have never, ever in my entire life of almost 20 years, related to something so deeply as I did to this single video. And the fact that this video popped up on my feed while I was just trying to change my music and keep on working, and something made me click, even though I expected it to be just another motivational "you can do it" type of video that I knew would add absolutely no value to my life, makes it even more special. It makes me feel just a little bit better knowing that there's someone in this strange, cold world who can potentially understand me because, man, at some moments, even I was starting to not understand myself. I really wish you all the best. And if I don't make it, I hope at least you do.
exactly the video i needed; when in college i was so productive, constantly working, but over this summer ive recently found myself procrastinating creative work with the justification that i’m ‘preparing’ for the creative process but then i’d keep ‘preparing’ til it’s 11 pm, making only the smallest amount of progress, then rinse and repeating. i’d been pretty productive during the beginning, working from the time i woke up til when i absolutely couldn’t but at some point that took a toll and my structureless work structure finally fell apart, leading to the sort of masked burnout i talked about prior. i’ve only recently started to work back into a schedule, limiting my creative and normal work time, and it’s made me so much more efficient. but yeah, glad to see someone’s in the same boat and will definitely work towards making this schedule more and more of a normality
I graduated from college 2 months ago and just recovered from a boutique of COVID. going out of college I thought that right now was the best time ever to finally pursue my dreams of writing. For a few weeks, things wen pretty good. But then they changed. I've been isolated and stressed out, hovering around my computer but always finding excuses to do something else: crochet, art, video games. I've been really miserable and avoiding other people. This video was a really great reminder that creativity is a result if a healthy body and mind. Thank you. I'm gonna try better to find a scheduele and work reasonably.
Genuinely some of the best writing productivity I’ve ever had was simply setting a clock and showing up to write like it was a day job. The only thing I could do besides writing was sit there, change the music, or use the bathroom
I think theres also another benefit to taking time from creating. You become more exposed to the world and other rich ideas and inspiration in order to create art. How else do you get new ideas and new ways to present different emotions when you sit in your room all day and think?
I agree, but I think that sitting and thinking for an extended period of time might not be helpful in exposing you to what the world has to offer. It's okay to take time to create, but maybe only if you're doing something else. Traveling, spending time with family and friends, reading, watching movies. I'm just not sure how helpful sitting at your desk and procrastinating is (it might be, I don't know).
Julia Cameron talks about “you don’t control the quality of the work. All you can do is show up, work hard and trust the process” in the Artists Way. Great advice to live by.
never have i accurately anticapated how much i will relate to something new in your uploads, what you've so perfectly described is the same never ending struggle I've had for YEARS that originated from an almost identical experience of over-documenting/planning and switching focus to TH-cam that's so frustrating. Finally I know I'm not so alone in it :)
This film is incredible. Over the past couple of months, specifically since January, I've built myself routine, I have my job (which I'm lucky enough to have be making TH-cam videos for a business), I have the gym, and I make myself dinner after work everyday. The one part I've neglected is my personal artistry and creativity. I need to find more time in my days for it, and this video reminded me that.
I did this with my ASMR channel. I just sat down, wrote the script and commissioned the art and voice work... and I was blown away by the results. In less than four months, I had a thousand subscribers and a dedicated fan base that is still growing. It was a writing experiment so I didn't worry about the results. I just created material and posted it and people started getting into my writing. In the end it was better to have an imperfect SOMETHING than a perfect NOTHING.
thanks for this. having gone through over two years of chronically being very sick i also learned that balance is absolute key. taking breaks will enable more efficiency and giving us creative energy
One of my favorite videos you've made so far 👏👏👏I constantly am thinking about my videos and if I fall behind I sacrifice going out and doing some other activity just so I can think even more. blocking off hours might be a good start!
Ive spent the past 4 years experimenting and exploring different video styles and ideas and scraping a lot of my work and this video geniuinly makes me feel like one day I'll get to the point where i finally get that spark and all of this frustration will be worth it. Defo gonna come back to this video when im older to see how far ive come.
I've been watching your videos for a while and as a fellow college dropout, I was a bit worried for you from the start. I knew it's an enormous ordeal to manage your life without the convenience of college or work, however hated they may be. So I'm glad you have found all this hope and health. :)
I felt like I was watching a movie when watching this video. The way you added cuts and added visuals. Just the way you edited this video, made a video where you’re just there talking feel like a movie worth watching.
.i didn’t realise I needed this but this video was incredibly helpful and it made me think about my work that I’ve been neglecting out of fear of failure, overwhelmed by the same feeling of whether I’m really built for what I’m trying to pursue❤ thanks a lot man this really gave me the clarity that I needed
It all comes down to believing in yourself, so believing that the artistic decisions that you make are good and you don't have to keep tweaking it, letting you put out more content. Also, when you love yourself, you take care of yourself better. Great video!!
Keep up the great work man. Your videos are absolutely incredible and you're an inspiration to all the other artists out there trying to find a better way. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks for this video man. As a creative I've always been a perfectionist but now I see that it just needs to be good enough. When we set the bar too high we only create more anxiety and stress for ourselves and then our productivity suffers.
there's a study about ceramics students that shows that, being creative might actually be about quantity, not quality. Flipping everything we've known as artists on its head. This is discussed in the book called Art & Fear.
Thankyou so much! This is something I’ve been struggling to figure out.. it could’ve took me a few more months to understand. Now i can progress from here… waiting for the next lesson!
I do have a TH-cam channel as well, but I don’t plan on making it a career. I’m writing a book myself, and I came up with the first tiny bits of my story 4 years ago, and my story on,y really started growing more and more, developing faster and faster, this past year. Why is that? I think it’s because I’ve been trying to take much better care of my mental health than before. Now, ideas for shenanigans my characters get into come so much more naturally to me, and I’m almost done my outline! I still have a long way to go before I’m done, no question about it, but I’m so excited about the whole journey. So take care of yourself, putting your own needs above your projects will likely end up helping those projects more than you think. Great video! Your editing is fantastic.
omg i relate to it so much i ain't in artistic field but as a student i feel like js studying for exams non stop n if i make any self improvement plan or do anything that dosen't involve study i feel like dyin n regrate it sm. thanks for bringing up this pov💟💟
A tip I have is pick up a creative hobby you’re not as emotionally invested in making perfect, just for the sake of having juices flowing regularly if you can’t quite commit to this with your art of choice yet. Particularly one of in a hobbyist field where everyone else isn’t at peak performance too. Ever since I started writing scripts for my audios, it’s pretty easy for be to churn out a lot of writing. And I’ve never been a writer; except when required in school. This was never really my interest and I didn’t believe I’d be good at it. But I write like I don’t need to be good/perfect at it; most ppl in this field aren’t lmaoo. I hold myself to a certain standard, but I also know if I slip up not that many ppl care. I def write like 6 pages a day at least 3/7 days a week - although each script is about 6 pages so that’s like a script a day.
I relate to you so much. I dropped out of school to chase my dreams of being a musician and although i work full time too im having trouble creating. Thank you for making this 😸😸
I've been reading this book called The Creative Habit by Tywla Tharp which has been excellent and reinforces the same idea. We are professional artists (well, I'm trying to be). And so, creativity has to be a regular, daily habit. We show up and we just create and when the stage curtains open, we have to just have a work of art ready to go. Your video reminded me of that and finally kicked me to get going with my dreams already!
I love this habit of "keeping the notes" for a while not throwing them to the garbage the next day. It's a reminder, for me, that i don't live my life in vain :)...something like that...
Amazing video Ryan, I finished studying and want to pursue this career more but it's so unpredictable and difficult to balance it with other hobbies or any other activities. I genuinely related to you saying sometimes it could take a week to come up with an idea and sometimes it's so many ideas within a small time frame. For me that's often when I took care of other activities and get inspiration somehow, because I decrease my stress for a moment and focus not only on continuesly creating. Especially when I watch more shows or films again I am starting to become more inspired, but it's a fine line of just consuming content and actually doing it - can really depend on when it's necessary to do so Just my thoughts, keep up the great videos!
Bro can't miss with these videos.. Once again, what a beautiful body of work. I'll make sure to try it out as well, as I sit here procrastinating by binge-watching your videos.
Man, as an aspiring content creator/filmmaker with a knack for visuals, i really admire your work. This is the first vid from you that I watched and the algorithm did not disappoint😤 Edit: you just got a sub fam
I've also found it super helpful to create 'boundaries', just cos time has a way of being spent mindlessly, esp. in this day and age of doom scrolling 'popcorn' media. And time tends to infinitely expand if you don't place markers for yourself. Future you will thank you. Start today : ) A cool quote I found recently: "What you do today can improve all your tomorrows." - Ralph Marston
This is perhaps a smaller scale but the beginning of this resonates witj me so much in the transition between practicing the technical elements of music and making the art. I used to have 12 hours practice days but I have never felt like songwriting can be applied to that
glad you figured this out for yourself man. and honestly i should probably take a few things from this because ive been falling into the trap of youtube first lately. its not good and i wanna get all the passion i had before back :P
@@RyanNgFilms yeah i do too. i honestly find i do the best when theres no real deadlines and i have other shit taking priority over yt (so like school or smth)
Basically, dont wait to do, just do. Its certainly something that ive told myself... But maybe ive forgotten somewhere along the way just how important that is to me. Sometimes you need to hear it from somewhere else to remember. Thank you.
yet another incredible video... well done Ryan! I've seen that interview with Stephen countless times, and also read his book On Writing along with all of Steven Pressfield's books (the War of Art, etc.) but this felt like a fresh take. Thank you for sharing your perspective.
This is such a FAB video!! Absolutely loved it. I came across your channel pretty recently, and I can't wait to try this out as a creative professional!
I hope watching this helps me with Uni. Ive been like this ever since moving from College back in 2022 to Uni up until now. I need to get stuff done. I hit such a high back in college that I feel pressured to make everything just as big if not bigger with each project brief.
the thing to do with a blank page is to just start writing and not let the pen stop moving, even if you’re just writing about how you can’t think of anything to write. there’s something about the tactility of pen and paper, the physical motions of moving hand across page, that gets the gears turning and builds momentum, taking the mind to unexpected places. edit after-that’s a separate process. computers make it too easy to second guess and bog down in editing as you go. but maybe that’s just me.
I am pursuing art so that I won't have to live just to work. I am not going to live a life just for art. Yes, I love creating, but I want to live so I can have some joy and something worth trying to express in the art I make.
I've seen that famous clip of Stephen King and George RR Martin years and years ago. Since then it never left my brain and I always caught myself thinking about the difference between these 2 artists and the nature behind their different characteristics. Naturally I wanna be as fast as King. And I suppose to this day I spend the time working on how I set up my life so that my brain is by default dialed in to be as efficient and in-the-zone as possible for more creative output. Not that I am rushing; I just wanna juice out the time I have in life. I have never been a consistent and predictable artist. The good news is I have been gradually improving. The results please me despite them not being obvious. These results came along in the process of self-awareness; learning not to blame myself for things that aren't my fault, and blaming myself for things that are my fault. How to angle myself so my creative brain flows the way I want it to, in the context of my personal nature, flaws and everything. My proudness of my subtle progress comes from my humble connection with myself.
Wow, that was inspiring. Great film! I've recently kind of discovered this myself. With the pressure after graduating to get a job etc, I've forced myself to just create regardless if I think the idea is that good. And it usually turns out okay at the least. Perfectionism is a hard mindset to conquer, but you I think you have to ignore it. The message in the video is great
I love your style, love the storytelling, love the story you told, love the message ! You rock. Subscribed ! I'll also add that I've been struggling with creating lately, and I *know* that I need to just "brain dump" more, but god dammit is it difficult

Especially when I watch more shows or films again I am starting to become more inspired, but it's a fine line of just consuming content and actually doing it - can really depend on when it's necessary to do so
Just my thoughts, keep up the great videos!
As someone who usually forgets what I had for breakfast, taking note of every single hour seems mad tempting...
Bro can't miss with these videos.. Once again, what a beautiful body of work. I'll make sure to try it out as well, as I sit here procrastinating by binge-watching your videos.
THANK YOU! ❤
Really enjoyed this and appreciated you being candid and honest about your process. Best wishes!
Man, as an aspiring content creator/filmmaker with a knack for visuals, i really admire your work. This is the first vid from you that I watched and the algorithm did not disappoint😤
Edit: you just got a sub fam
Love how you used the demo of I Can't Help It.
I've also found it super helpful to create 'boundaries', just cos time has a way of being spent mindlessly, esp. in this day and age of doom scrolling 'popcorn' media. And time tends to infinitely expand if you don't place markers for yourself. Future you will thank you. Start today : )
A cool quote I found recently: "What you do today can improve all your tomorrows." - Ralph Marston
This is perhaps a smaller scale but the beginning of this resonates witj me so much in the transition between practicing the technical elements of music and making the art. I used to have 12 hours practice days but I have never felt like songwriting can be applied to that
do not stop making you saved my dreams ♥
Damn thank you brother. Wishing you the best of luck on your dreams! ❤
Really, really, really loving these videos.
Thank you!!!
Your editing style is so unique ngl you inspire me to step up my vids times a hundred 😭
THANK YOU!!!!
This might just be exactly what I’ve needed to hear, thank you so much.
Reaching your mental bandwidth is really relatable
I always look forward to your videos 💯🫡
Thank you. This is gospel. Much needed
glad you figured this out for yourself man. and honestly i should probably take a few things from this because ive been falling into the trap of youtube first lately. its not good and i wanna get all the passion i had before back :P
Yeah... It becomes super difficult to do anything else when your creative life takes priority, at least that is from my experience.
Thank you so much for the love! So glad I was able to present a different side to this topic.
You remove your anxiety and brain fog man. Awesome, kudos to you.
This is one of the best videos youve put out, bravo
Wow thank you for the love Charles!!!
This video and this channel deserve a lot more than 130k subs and 56k views.
Wow. just such a great video. thank you for putting this into the world man.
Thank you David!!!
What a beautiful video, kudos.
This is such a FAB video!! Absolutely loved it. I came across your channel pretty recently, and I can't wait to try this out as a creative professional!
Wow, thank you so much for the kind comment ♥♥♥
Dude! When you picked up the mic, I lost it. Took me wayyyyy of guard
Needed to see this
I hope watching this helps me with Uni. Ive been like this ever since moving from College back in 2022 to Uni up until now. I need to get stuff done. I hit such a high back in college that I feel pressured to make everything just as big if not bigger with each project brief.
Fantastic!!!!! Thank you! You're helping me along my own artist's journey. 💘💘💘
Fantastic video! I feel the love and craft poured into the whole thing. Wonderful cinematography and editing, it was a delight to watch!
Thank you man!!!!
Commenting for engagement! Great video Ryan, I'm a big fan :)
haha thank you 😂
This video hit my feed just at the moment. Thank you.
the thing to do with a blank page is to just start writing and not let the pen stop moving, even if you’re just writing about how you can’t think of anything to write. there’s something about the tactility of pen and paper, the physical motions of moving hand across page, that gets the gears turning and builds momentum, taking the mind to unexpected places. edit after-that’s a separate process. computers make it too easy to second guess and bog down in editing as you go. but maybe that’s just me.
I am pursuing art so that I won't have to live just to work. I am not going to live a life just for art. Yes, I love creating, but I want to live so I can have some joy and something worth trying to express in the art I make.
Great words 🙏🙏
Great film! Thanks for that!
great vid! how did you find such good music to use without copyright? (i especially like the first one)
What a nice introduction to your channel.
Thank you for watching :)
Wonderful video, man. Keep it up.
Thank you!!!
Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. God knows I needed it
❤❤❤
breathtaking shots, love the message
Wow, that was inspiring. Great film! I've recently kind of discovered this myself. With the pressure after graduating to get a job etc, I've forced myself to just create regardless if I think the idea is that good. And it usually turns out okay at the least. Perfectionism is a hard mindset to conquer, but you I think you have to ignore it. The message in the video is great
Hell yeah man! The other thing to keep in mind is that you might think it's okay, but to other people it might be amazing.
@@RyanNgFilms That's a great thought, thanks man :)
Top tier video in the entire youtube about this topic, thanks brother. Really inspiring and helpful. Wish you the best!😁🔥
it's amazing how well you tell stories 👁️👄👁️
Thank you wise one.
Wow! ....speechless ...great work!! Congrats!
I loved this video. Interesting, concise, simple, and visually appealing. Nice pacing and content. Great!!!
I love your style, love the storytelling, love the story you told, love the message ! You rock. Subscribed !
I'll also add that I've been struggling with creating lately, and I *know* that I need to just "brain dump" more, but god dammit is it difficult
Thank you for subscribing!!!
reallly liked the vid! damn, got so immersed in no time. hIts a chord at the right place thank you for making channel :3
