You're Using The WRONG Camera, Here's Why

  • Camera gear has always been a struggle for me. No matter how much I research, or how hard I try to replicate my favorite creators, my cinematography always seemed to fall short of my expectations. I couldn’t understand why all my shots felt so bland.
How did my filmmaking idols do it? Was it because they had a bigger team? A larger budget? More gear to work with? Was I using the wrong camera?
Well, it turns out that I WAS using the wrong camera… BUT the real answer wasn’t in buying lights, or more lenses, or becoming a color grading master.
It was much simpler than that.

I bought a professional camera released in 2014 in 2020 and have had zero regrets. There were many mirrorless cameras in my budget at the time that I could have gotten instead but none had the features I wanted. Having a decent camera is important but the technical aspects of how you use it as well as how you light and frame the shot make the most difference (not to mention what lenses you use).

There's a reason why Casey neistat used to break his cameras every other day, it was simply because he always used them as a tool to tell his story and not get guided by camera to tell a story.

Even though I went to film school, playing around with camera settings and measuring light has never come naturally to me. I know that my strength lies in my storytelling. So instead of investing in an even more expensive camera (my Sony zve10 is perfect enough), I've been spending a lot of time watching lectures on writing. All kinds. Fantasy world building, short story structures, plot archetypes, the harmon circle. Because this is an area where I know I can thrive. In terms of cinematography, learning lighting is still too much for me, but learning composition is not. the challenge of finding angles that can visually convey my message is thrilling, and you don't need an expensive camera for that. Often when you play to your strengths, thats when you finally shine.

That was beautiful comrade . Thank you for telling this brilliant story. Something I was thinking while listening to you was that to stand out, we need purpose, intent, and passion for the story we try to tell with the camera, audio, lighting equipment etc. At first people emulate, then they evolve , or they don’t and they give up. The motivation they once had to learn to color grade 10 bit footage and create “the film look”, or learn to use a gimbal to create beautiful speed ramps etc, will die. Because without purpose, the camera is as helpful as an uncooked noodle. It’s just there, not helpful, nor nourishing, not until it’s boiled, cooked for the appropriate time, and then appreciated by the consumer.
    Nobody wants an uncooked noodle

Honestly, there really isn't an answer, it's a struggle and you always end up sacrificing something for it (family time, fun time). It's never perfect, but I think the best way to maintaining is to literally be disciplined in everything in your life. Wake up and go to sleep at the same time, exercise every week, don't procrastinate, give yourself good recovery time. It's no different from training like an athlete.
This is the answer I've come up with for myself and it is still a real struggle, but hopefully this helped in some way!

This was wonderful. I’m on a journey of my own - in which I kept swapping to a new body/lens setup (each time selling to buy used) - and I knew something wasn’t right. Just recently I landed on a manual focus lens that just works wonders for me - and I was finally in love with shooting again instead of feeling like something was missing each time I came home. I think the key takeaway (which you emphasized nicely) is that it’s ok to seek gear that represents your tone in a unique way - it just doesn’t have to be what everyone else says is the best. Great video!

it's really interesting hearing this perspective about camera gear. I have a Lumix GH6 among a variety of other video capable cameras, but it's my go-to because its so *flexible.* I feel like I can make anything I want with that camera, when before, my old camera could not do slow motion, couldn't shoot 4K and had 8 bit color. It's not to say that I didn't make content I loved with that Canon Rebel 750D, but I know I can take advantage of higher end gear in a way that benefits my content and the "look" of my videos. It's awesome you like the look of iPhone footage and that midrange MILC, but I like the tact, sharp look of a true 4K signal, applying aggressive color grades and using that additional exposure latitude allowed by a 10 bit LOG profile to make my lighting setups more dynamic.
But then sometimes I like to shoot video with my Canon 1DX, and that only does 1080p. But the big sensor lets in a lot of light and the default color science is amazing for getting a softer, more down-to-earth look that I can't get from my GH6.
I started TH-cam with a Canon Vixia camcorder that I used into the freaking ground. It was in terrible condition after 6 or so years from constantly being in bags and in the mountains where I wanted to shoot video. So I guess that camera has become kind of endearing in a way, with that smooth servo zoom, the lens flares and saturated color science. I can't help but bring it out sometimes because the video it captures is like a time machine. From the good ol' days, so to speak

I always looked in a bit of envy not being able to get even a phone that could record, not even dreaming of a camera, then I dreamed of getting an iphone 11 pro, almost 5 years later I got it for recording, waiting to repair in a short while exactly like i dreamed it look like, but this is what I was also thinking, camera doesn't matter just do you and get the training arc started, you'll be in a much better place

Very nice video & thougt. I am currently also learning a lot about showing my own style and my personality… I bought the gh5 + sigma 18-35 combo some years ago and started with it, got a new job as an employee where i shot with an FX3, now I‘m starting my own business, switching back to the gh5 and to be honest: the fx3 is a way better tool for me to tell my Stories. It‘s easy to use, looks gorgeous, even 😂handheld, has a working AF, it‘s an awesome run and gun camera, which is sadly not that easy on my GH5. I rock my GH5 now too, but I‘m looking forward getting an FX3 because of the same reasons you mentioned in the video: telling my stories, not getting held back by my gear. (I do a lot of run & gut where every second you safe is worth it and you can‘t allow mistakes)
But ay, your video brought me back to the time I bought my GH5 and to see the positive on that thing :) It‘s still an awesome camera

it takes experience, trial tribulations and error to know immediately what tools are needed to achieve what you want to achieve - i think you will have projects in your career that warrant the fancy gear - and when you have it all, and know what kit to grab for the frame you imagine in your head - youve begun to understand the craft

Absolutely agree! If you need the fancy gear then don't be afraid to go ahead and use it, but most of the time people just go for the fancy gear just to say they have it. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment!

Ryan, there are directors who are going back to older lens from Hollwood's golden age to capture that look that once existed in film. Directors like Quentin Tarentino and Matt Reeves have vintage lens, OLD.

Congrats on an awesome message delivery to inspire just making the movie, but what if sometimes the gear is the key to unlock your inspiration or look? Like the half broken iPhone or for me it was a imperfect manual focus lens, it’s a terrible shame that the perfect combo of photographer and gear hardly meet due to economics, the world would be a far richer place if it weren’t so

  • @danieldougan269
    @danieldougan269 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

If the iPhone floats your boat and meets your needs, more power to you.
I love how sophisticated phones have become for photography and videography. Smartphones have basically eliminated point-and-shoot cameras from the market.
But they have a lot of limitations too. Their tiny sensors limit the ability to get background separation (shallow depth of field), and they can only fake it. Also, they have very limited dynamic range. Finally, they can't capture distant subjects like wildlife.
It's great to always have a camera in your pocket so you at least have something to capture the moment, but my phone is a poor substitute for my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. I can make that camera look like a phone if I stop down my lens, but I can't make my phone look like that camera does with good, fast glass.

I think it's important to ask: Who am I, what makes me unique and how can I convert that to the screen? And what do I actually need in order to do that?
Also sometimes it's great to be limited to approach creativity in new ways but sometimes it's also really annoying when you just can't get the shot right because of it 😅
Every good filmmaker can conjure something up no matter the gear. Thank you for the reminder. Was actually contemplating something of this matter today.

great story beats fancy tools every single time. this reminds me that there's a reason why films are great to begin with, not bc they're technically advanced but bc their styles/stories are original and one of one. examples of this remind me of agnes varda, akira kurosawa, michael moore.

    Great video, Ryan, as always.
Since you've mentioned the Lumix G85, I would love to nerd out, and share some curious details about it.
I've been shooting on a lumix G85 for 8 years, and It took me a long way to master the Panasonic micro four thirds system. On the first years using this system, I was never really happy with the images that I was achieving, and something was really off.
After so many up and downs, trial and error, and so much work created, I've really came across the other side, and I can definitely call myself a Lumix PRO. In the last two years, I've found even more passion (and GAS) that I've ended up buying all the past models, including GH2, GH3, GH4... And all of them feels like the same familiar camera, but the same quirk that I've found on all of them is that using the 1/40 shutter speed, gets a way better image and motion cadence when shooting at 24p. (instead of 1/50).
Also, if you really want to get great images on the Lumix system, you really should get some native prime lenses (like the 20mm 1.7), my favorite lens on the system.
Off-topic note, but related to the video: Francis Ford Coppola has chosen the image of the Lumix GH2 on a blind test audience (on Zacuto’s Revenge Of The Great Camera Shootout, 2012). That doesn't mean much, but the man himself definitely has a longtime experience.

@@RyanNgFilms Thanks a lot for your response.
I also was going to comment about Fujifilm, but I thought the comment was going to be too long, lol.
Recently, Fujifilm cameras really came to my attention, for many years I've never considered trying sony or canon (despite how great they are), I was really happy and familiarized shooting with Panasonic. But Fujifilm is really getting me some Fomo, there's something really special about Fuji punchy color science, and shooting images full of character right in camera, for not tinkering too much with color correction in post. That's something that really make me thinking on getting a Fuji in the future.
      Thanks for your brilliant thoughts.

I share a lot of your views. I've been using my smartphone to capture videos, just cuz it's convenient and easy to hand off to other people to record me. I tried putting a more advanced camera in someone's hand once to record me, and despite telling them I already had everything set up, all they had to do was hit record and keep me in frame, they still managed to fat finger the dials and change settings. But a phone, most people understand how that works these days. I still have some problems with people getting their fingers in the frame but whatever, they're not making the footage completely unusable by accidentally changing a dial or setting.

Thank you for the clarification Tommy!
I don't believe I said that he was the inventor of photography. I think I said he was a "founding father" which I think is fitting for Louis since he was one of the first to create a more accessible process of photography. But I can see how it came across as if I said he invented photography.

Also remember this, the Metropolitan Museum of Art once said, we will never hang Abstract Expressionist art in our museum. Today you can go there and view Abstract Expressionist art like Pollock, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and so on. Who knows what is art? everything and anything is art. Imagine when Jackson Pollock first saw drops of paint he had lying on the floor and thought WOW! I found something i didn't know i was looking for. It is easier to paint a representational image of something that everyone knows what it look like, but how do you express an emotion of a feeling you have inside.
