Empanadas in Ecuador - BEEF, SHRIMP, CHEESE, AND MORE | Where to Eat in Quito

Ecuador loves empanadas - pretty much every country in Latin America does. In Ecuador, the empanadas are usually fried. The most popular variety is the empanada de viento, "wind empanada". It's a cheese empanada that is often eaten as a snack - sometimes with sugar sprinkled on it, and with a hot cup of morocho, a white corn drink. Speaking of morocho, the same corn is used to make the second most popular Ecuadorian empanada. It simply goes by the name empanada de morocho. They are usually stuffed with ground beef, rice, and peas, but the crispy fried morocho breading is the real star here. The white corn dough is unique to most of Central and South America. It becomes incredibly crispy and is almost a cross between a fried corn tortilla and a normal wheat breading.I also eat a verde style empanada. Verde is the term used in Ecuador to describe green plantains. The empanada de verde is has a mushed up green banana outer layer and it's often filled with seafood. The shrimp version I try is savory, but the crispy plantain breading offers a slight sweet and sour note.Finally, the best dessert empanada in my opinion is the mejido. It’s a wheat flour dough that’s stuffed with cheese, raisins, and brown sugar, but it also contains custard - a beaten egg with sugar and hot water or milk. While I'm not sure what the exact translation is, the word mejido describes the custard.
