After so many years of bass innovation there is still nothing better than a good old p bass for me. My favorite bass I’ve ever owned
It’s a Moollon P bass. I’ve got a Moollon J bass. Incredible and so fun to play.
My fender p bass is my no.1! Played many gigs with it this year and its gonna get me through music college 👍
It is a Moollon but you could pick up an MIJ Fender from the Fujigen factory 80s to mid 90s for 1/4th the price and it be just as well crafted an instrument, even better than most MIA. A good P is a good P, always play before you buy.
My first bass was a Squier P Bass. (30 years ago) I traded it for a passive dual pickup Alvarez then moved on to an active Peavey dual pickup. A few years ago I got into Fender Jazz basses and now I'm itching for a P Bass. Does it ever end?!?! haha.
These fellas are TIGHT.
Khalil Mason Damn right, they are!
yep
Yo that drummer is nice with it
dat displacements are killing
He also plays with Snarky Puppy. Jason JT Thomas ftw :)
And he can sing!
pocket for dayyyyys!
I thought it was him!
Wow, thanks for that. You get me listening to artists and music I might never hear otherwise. How much music is still recorded this way, live in the studio? No cut and paste editing, just as many takes as it takes. No click track, just a great drummer. Musicians playing together in real time, in the same room. I am loving it.
Have you checked out Scary Pockets yet? All their music is recorded like this.
Let me know how it goes:)
This is amazing, and a great lesson in economy and tightness over flashy and showy.
Yes! Much better than 10000 notes per second
Music for musicians. That's why I like it. I like it a lot.
This is the bass sound I looking for... This is the real natural sound of a real bass that exists... The precison bass rules!!!
Marcos Nobre If you listen carefully you'll hear he's using an octave pedal for that low end growl
Martin Heath yes, I heard it too, but this sound effect isn't at all the music... Or not? I thought had heard a natural precision bass sound too...
@@martinheath5947 I think he might just be using that for the solo
He kicks in with the 8ve right at 1:53 when switching to a new part. It's a bit subtle, but you can hear it when the bass notes are in isolated places.
Damn straight. You save time and money by just getting a P from day #1 and sticking with it.
Man sometimes you just gotta love a good ol' p bass
Saw him with Warren, he was using a Stingray most of the show and was crazy how good he was, I spent most of the show just watching him (and I usually focus on other instruments cuz I am drummer and guitarist).
GREAT band- and of course the sweet Moollon too in the hands of this bad ass fellow on bass!
Rufus Philpot when Rufus Philpot compliments your playing, you have officially “made it” as a bassist.
really refreshing, solid, simple holding-it-down bass playing, with attitude. Love it!
Fantastic! Also Kevin's beard perfectly matches with the golden p-bass pickguard ah ah
I looooove this bass player's style!! Slight shades of Paul Jackson, groove for days... THIS...is BASS!!
And I can recommend the little Ampeg bass amp and cabinet. I got two of those 2x10's and the little stack sounds real tight and Ampeggy. Every soundtech loves this one. You won't break your back and your back with this one! In combination with a P it rocks and Souls! :-D
Agree totally, I run the VR through a 67 2x15 Ampeg/Altek cab that I rewired to 4 ohms. It rocks,, I use a 77 P and a 71 fretless J. Ampeg rules.
Saw Kevin with Gov’t Mule a couple months ago and he absolutely killed it!!
I have a 50s reissue Fender P-Bass, sound is just pure classic, timeless
🎉What a thrill to see this performed! I have the album, it’s classic! But it’s exciting and instructive to see great music played live! Great writing, great musicians, great video!🎉
After 44 years I traded down my SVT to a VR,, I see Kevin using one. For the life of my ears, I can not tell the diff as to the tone. Ampeg nailed that stompin little bastard, 150 into 8, 200 into 4,, and an XLR to go straight into the snake. Thanx Ampeg,,, oh yea my back thanks you as well.
2:43 ... What a Groove! What a tone!
Douglas Xavier just NASTY!!!
Nice, I had to pause and go get my new headphones for this one.
Daaaaamn!!!! That's so freaking awesome. I'm watching the Starsky & Hutch TV series DVD boxset and this sounds awesome over it
They all look like a bunch of dads! I love it!
This is the kind of music I want to play when I grow up... He says at just post-50 years😉
Just phenomenal.🤯
There's a man who knows his bass well.
bass is sexiest instrument x3
100%
This is why it is seducing me away from guitar.
Absolutely
I dated a girl who would literally get aroused by music with prominent bass guitar.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nice playing, and that bass tone you have is great. It stood out through that tune.
Fabulous playing and sounding bass - simply gorgeous.
Frankie Boyle rockin that bass
BassistBirnie I actually thought the very same at first. These guys are too cool.
BassistBirnie Forget Mock The Week..... This definitely is Rock The Bass
BassistBirnie fact!
So cool !!! are using octave on bass in some parts like 3:12 ?
Holy hell, what a killer jam. These guys are pros of the highest level
Turned the beat around and everyone lost it 😂😂😂 We've all listened instead of counted before
1:43 that's totally something mad
Memories of the Headhunters. Love it.
1stly P bass is the best bass - Leo Fender got it rite the 1st time. 2ndly people saying "it's not that dirty" have no clue, please stop, dirty in regards to guitar among guitarists is overdrive or an overdriven amp and this is what it sounds like (the title didn't say fuzz into fuzz into fuzz into phaser into cocked wah), stop trying to be so smart your silly and just enjoy.
WOW ! WHAT A GOOD BANQUET ! All the musicians do what they have to do, good coordination. Enjoy the support of the bass very much, the PB is simple, BUT it is RICH IN SOUND AND BODY. All the excellent musicians and IMPROVISE WITH THE HEART. Thanks for that meal. !
This is tremendous Scott!! Thanks for sharing, you'r the best!
Drummer is sick
JT don't need no stinking pocket! JT *is* pocket!
Two members of snarky in one room. You're blessed
McQueen is the only puppy in the room, isn't he?
plutin Jason "JT" Thomas on drums
If Genesis and Pink Floyd had a baby raised by the Funk Brothers . . . .
i saw this guy grooving with the warren haynes band and he was so sick. so fluid and fast with his plucking fingers but also so smooth.
Saw him couple days ago too, I could not believe my eyes and ears, he was pretty much soloing most of the songs, insane skills and feel, how I didn't know about Scott? Probably very underrated.
The pignose 7-100 in the background, when used right those amps are incredible
Oh dear Lord that's funky! I got the bass face just listening.
Love the Ampeg mini stack!
Absolutely, man ;]
That Man is INSANELY DAM GOOD BASSIST..Thaks For Share this.
Guys , this is an awesome song you made, the steady bass grooves and those amazing guitar leads with the accompanying keyboard. It's so cool. Don't know what type of music this is but it's like a mix of jazz and rock and just so exceptional some awesome spacey tunes . You should make albums of this stuff wooow.
That is so freaking cool man!!
Good Lawd, that was so dirty I feel like I need to shower after watching it! SICK groove! All musicians are awesome, but the bass and drums stole the show. Great work!
Serious funk!
Man.....they really stretched it out there a few times where I secretly had stink face wondering and hoping that ALL would recover and land on their feet at the same time on the next measure.
That drummer is freakin AWESOME!!!!!
Killin it guys!
When the groove is sooooo deep, you can't even see the bottom. That was excellent.
Try John Wetton circa King Crimson live 73-74. End game mean bass monster tone. I'd have to play like Fripp so as not to be gobbled down by the bass tone.
Most powerful bass tone ever, period, full stop. Especially in '74.
Loving the sound of that bass!
This is EPIC
What is that pedal laying next to the electro harmonix pedal?
This is the funkiest Frankie Boyle standup special I've ever seen!
Glad I'm not the only one who thought he looks like Frankie Boyle (that's high praise coming from me)
Don't let this distract you from the fact that IHOP changed their name to IHOb
Ah... FORQ that.
International House Of BASS!!!
I liked Wendy’s response lol.
But will lines get any shorter?
Really...?
Stoner rock points if you were a Kevin Scott fan back when he was with Albert Simpson and Highly Kind.
Boyle those bass strings!
Damn... This was great. Kudos to all the musicians in this video.
Jason fn JT Thomas on the drums! One of the best!
Too much fun!💖
I love all these guys, but Chris McQueen may be one of the most original sounding guitarists I’ve heard in a long while.
Scott: IMHO, a great p-bass sound is all about phat, and had nothing to do with that clackity tone you seem to like
Saw these guys live last month when they warmed up for Snarky Puppy.
Kennet same! Saw them in Hamburg :)
great sounding bass (I have a 50's Classic) and great playing all round !
For everyone asking about the "Poop" pedal, its most likely a Boss OC2
That was so AWESOME !
Very smooth funk, I can listen to all day with my glass of whiskey.
🧡🧡🧡
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG!!!! That groove tho!!!!
Love Moollon p bass, want it so badly.
Yo! Would love to have this recording on a legitimate platform so I don't have to use TH-cam to listen... Killer session, where can I buy it?!
Loved seeing the the Pignose 7-100 in the background
love to see more jam vids like this!
The less you play, the deeper you can dive.
As a young gun, i have tried to wiggle my fingers around the kneck, anytime i had enough space in the song.
Here is an amazing example, for playin groovy and not to much.
Gasp! A P-bass tone that I... Like! Maybe even LOVE! I didn't know anyone made good sounds with P-Basses anymore.
Huh?
Most of the modern music I hear played on P-basses sounds (to me, obviously I'm not the norm) like schite, it's like they go out of their way to make their P sound less like a P and it winds up sounding to me like either a cheapo toy bass or a fire-breathing sasquatch bellowing on steroids while farting through an alphorn (way too hot and mid-heavy, in other words- like a natural P tone boosted all to hell). This is a pretty damn good P-bass tone. Sounds like what it is, not too much of it, and raw and a little bit gnarly. I like it. Sounds a fair bit like my Warmoth Jazz basses (fretted with a 1988 Japanese Fender Jazz Bass Special neck, fretless with a defretted 1985 of same model. Don't get all bass justice warrior- the bodies and electronics were pretty shoddy on both of the ones I bought since I just bought them for the necks) with EMG GZR-P pickups. Growly and fat, I like it. I have one of those Ampeg Micro-VR rigs for my passive basses, I guess that makes sense. I play my Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling H and HS (fretted and fretless, respectively) through A Gallien Krueger MB210-II.
This was recorded in front of live studio audience 6:54
Nice drum playing
Loving Chris McQueen. And was that a mini-boob by Kevin at 6:05
Plus bassy listens to Pino. He even does the signature Pino head-thing that Pino does so stylishly.
Prog Rock! Man, don't know why there isn't more bands doing this. This is one tasty number. This soup is so thick, it can be eaten with a FORQ!
O.M.G.! it's GENIUS!!!
Phewwwww!! 💪🏿🙌🏿
Great stuff!
Saw them at The Rex with Michael League - mind blowing
Not that Kevin deminishes the mind blowing in any way at all - killer
Awesome!
Does anyone know what pedals he's using? I hear an octave pedal but there's something else.
fun to Jam to. Thanks for posting
Is that an ampeg micro vr 200? Sounds sick
What octave pedal is he using? Oc2?
8:03 Not sure.
Flying pinky in the right hand - is it worth correcting? If it helps this amazing groove - maybe no use correcting?
What do your ears tell you?
Maciej Sarna man this was the first thing i heard listening to this. I was like "Damn its good, but i can just hear his pinky not on a string and it completely ruined it for me, clearly a subpar player"
Maciej Sarna as long as it is this good he could play with his foot and I wouldn't care.
I hear that for sure it is a technik worth learning.
I'd say the majority of bassists don't play with their pinky. Very rare you're playing all four strings at once. I rarely use my ring finger let alone my pinky.
Brilliant!
KILLER tone.
Wow!
That guy could pass for my twin. And ironically we both anchor our thumbs on the p bass pickup when we play. Lol.
I had no idea Rodney Mullen played keyboards
Wow. That ruled.
Play that funky music...💥🎶🎶
Really enjoyed that
He also plays with Eddie Roberts in "Matador Soul Sounds", doesn't he?
