Thank you for sharing Hanks journey. My girl Taz hasn't had surgery yet, but she is seeing a surgeon in the coming weeks. She has grade 4 luxating patella's in both knees. 😢 I know after healing my orthopedic surgery, I felt a great deal better & I am hoping the same happens for my girl Taz.

Wishing you lots of strength. It isn’t sure yet, but we found a dog we want to adopt. He is 6 years and also has PL on both his knees. We really want to help him but I am very concerned. Would you like to give an update about Taz how she is doing? All the best wishes

Our dog is going to need the same surgery. She's cute and small. Out of nowhere I saw her limping and not bending one of her knees. The vet says her kneecap is dislocated. I'm just a little nervous. Thankfully she doesn't seem to be experiencing a lot of pain.

This is extremely helpful along with this whole series, my 7 month frenchie is about to have 2 knee operations, one on each back leg. (4 weeks apart). So this is really helpful. Thankyou

Hi Courtney! Agnes is at the end of week 3 post MLP surgery. Your videos of Hank's recovery have been so very helpful for me to gauge how she is doing with her recovery! She actually has done remarkably well in my opinion. The vet/surgeon said she would probably carry the surgery leg for a week and then start to tap it down. The next week he said she would start to use it with some hobbling and very little pressure on the surgery leg. Here's the deal... she started using it on the second night after her surgery. At the end of week 2 post op it became increasingly difficult to contain her as she thinks she is a Himalayan Sled Dog with a bionic knee! I have been keeping her on a very short leash at my side and reigning her in when she starts to pull. If I keep her pace slow she is walking well on all 4's. She does have a bit of a limp but based on your videos of Hank that is normal at this point of the recovery. It has become a serious effort to keep her contained and from hurting herself. I am amazed at how calm Hank is and how little you have to do to keep him focused. I am certain it is the difference in their breeds and temperament but WOW... He is so calm!!!
I have a Rehab Vet lined up to do a few Laser Therapy sessions on Agnes' knees. Unfortunately, I will not be able to afford full therapy sessions but I have the exercises he recommended at our pre surgery consult. He will direct me on when to begin them when the vet releases her for physical therapy. She goes back Monday for an Adequain injection so I will ask for permission to get started. Again... your videos will be so helpful for me to accomplish this at home by myself. I am committing to 5 Laser sessions and then we will go on an as needed basis. I want the very best outcome for Agnes and will continue to work diligently to help her improve. She is up to 2 or 3 five minute leash walks a day. I have been doing sit to stands with her this week and she is doing well. Sometimes her form with the surgery leg is better than others. Did you correct Hank's leg for him or just let him do it? I dont want to hurt her knee in any way but don't want to promote bad habits. Can you give me any guidance with this?
I know I am way too high strung about making sure she doesn't do anything to compromise her surgery. We have transformed our Laundry Room into her recovery haven. It is tiled so we put a carpet pad and rug on the floor, a comfy bed and blanket, a camera to watch her from work on my phone and a diffuser puffing lavender essential oils for calming... she is the queen of little recovery kingdom. LOL We can't just let her roam the house as we have wood floors and she is jumper. When she gets excited she jumps straight up in the air like a kid on a pogo stick. This is not something we taught her but she has done it since she was a puppy. When she is out of her haven we have her on a leash by our side on the rug or in our laps on the furniture... hanging on to her to make sure she does not get excited and jump down. Did you not have any of these issues with Hank? This message is way longer than I intended and I apologize. Any additional guidance you can give me to keep Agnes calm and contained for the next 5 weeks is greatly appreciated!
Agnes sends her regards to Hank... ;)

Hello Chancy & Agnes! Thank you for the message! I am so happy to hear Agnes is on the mend thanks to amazing dog owners such as yourself. It's been 3 & 1/2 years since Hank's surgery, so I'm sure there are many more informative videos out there on this particular surgery, but I was at a loss when we went thru it, so I'm happy to help others! You mentioned Hank being so calm. What's funny about that is, he's really not that calm! :) He's a bouncy doodle! But a very sensitive bouncy doodle. Looking back, I do not believe we medicated Hank enough for his pain. I, myself, hesitate on most medications and their side effects, and because of that, I did not get ahead of his pain well enough. If I were to go back and do anything different, I would have managed his pain level better. With that said, I do believe his calmness was due to his pain and sensitivity at that time. I think you are on the right track! I would just continue the short walks with Agnes as much as possible to get her out of containment from the laundry room to calm her anxiousness :) Keep up with the exercises at any chance, even if it's just one sit to stand. I do remember at times correcting Hank's alignment, but with a very passive approach. Especially the balance exercises. I would place him in correct posture, to assure the right muscle groups were balanced out and stabilizing him properly. I would never correct/touch the knee joint itself. I would either adjust him from above the knee or below (meaning, correct his foot alignment or hip/spine alignment). The same for massaging. I would never massage the knee joint itself. I would massage above it and below it, but no where near the surgery site.. I hope this helps. It's been a few years, so my memory slips me. Whew! I'm so glad it's behind us! It was a ton of work! Good luck to you and Agnes!

@@Paddyjay12 she did great actually. We bought like a play fence type thing to keep her in while we were at work (so bigger than a kennel) and sat in there with her in evenings. When she was on a leash she was chill but when we trusted her without she would run around and jump a few times but she was still fine. She did actually have to have the pin removed after it healed because it kept cysting up and her body was pushing it out but it’s been 2 years and she’s done great no issues

done on both legs simultaneously which is supposed to encourage her to use her legs post-surgery, rather than favoring one. I wonder if anyone else has gone through this and has any helpful advice?

My Yorkshire terrier had his surgery done 11 days ago for luxating patellas. Plus he had a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament on his left knee. I was apprehensive at first about doing surgery on both legs at the same time but I really am glad we did. I wouldn't want to go through the process twice or put him through it twice. His surgeon said in smaller dogs there is no difference in complication rates when the surgery is done bilaterally. Good luck! It's really tough but remember it will be worth it!

Did you cover all your floors or just the area you contained Hank in during recovery? Agnes just turned 4 last saturday and is a bit high energy!
