This spell rocks! Two chances to deal damage and multi-target capability means it's a safe bet even if your luck has run dry. Plus, the potential damage if things really go your way is absolutely savage.
I enjoyed casting this spell once back when I was playing a level one druid. Especially since we get so few direct damage spells to help out during that time. It didn't last because the Cleric said it was OP (while using Guiding Bolt every turn) and the DM made it a flat attack roll that deals 2d6 damage on a hit. Never used it after that, or at least not until the next game I joined.
When ever I use this Spell, I will say. "Knife to see you, time to Chill out" , "Have Good Knife, hope ain't Cold enough" , or "Knife saved, I do Cut it close". Okay I ran out of puns.
I made a Mountain Dwarf sorcerer with Draconic bloodline specifically for this thematic thing. White Dragon or Silver (I think) for the frost aesthetic, Ray of Frost, Frostbite, Ice Knife. Maybe a water spell was in there too like Create Water or something.
@@WolfHreda twin firing ice knife with it upcast to level 3 could be savage depending on the situation. And God help your enemies if they have penalties on their dex saving throws. Remember: if your friend webbed two enemies twin shooting ice knife probably won't break the restraints lol
A few things that could potentially funtion with it is moisture from the air latent blast so like a frost mine it could potentially be good at clearing out light freezing stuff like large open wounds or water none the less cause it's a cold blast that requires a target area to explode before freezing so it can freeze an area underwater without freezing anything excess.
My DM ruled that I could hold it in my hand for one turn and use catapult on the knife the following turn. The ice would increase in size to meet the minimum 1lb requirement for Catapult. We then used it again to hold inside of a lock and increase the size to break the lock with the explosive force. Requires DM approval
I had a cool idea my character is a rogue phantom and he has shape water which lets him already make ice daggers that are normal but now I can mix in ice knifes that deal more damage and explode but also wails of the grave which does aoe necrotic on sneak attacks which can stack lots if effects on my enemies
Make a Variant Human silver dragon Sorcerer (silver is an ice dragon) Your feat: Magic Initiate Warlock to take Hex from the list. Use your free point improvements on your Charisma and Intelligence. For your Metamagics: Go for Twinned and Heightened On your only ability score improvements for Sorcerer; Forego it for the Elemental Adept feat in Cold Damage. Carry the build to level 6. Now, your ice knife should be doing the a minimum of two plus Charisma mod. Now once again, pour the rest of the 14 levels into an evocation wizard. Overchannel makes up for not taking Empowered spell earlier. Use your bonus action for Hex, then on your next turn cast a heightened 5th level Ice Knife, doing a d10 of piercing damage + a bonus d6 of Necrotic. Then when the ice knife explodes, they'll not only have disadvantage on the save. If they fail, they take a full 36+5 cold damage. This is an especially devilish combo if you twin that Ice Knife onto two creatures next to each other. One of them being your hex target. So then not only will that hexed target take a lot of cold damage from their Ice Knife but they'll also take another 6d6 cold damage from the other knife if they fail another dex save. Don't have enough sorcery points to do Heightened after Twinning Ice Knife? No problem, you can burn a 4th level slot to regain 6 sorcery points. So bam, Heightened spell.
Ok i used this quite a while on my druid now and i must say just as i previously said it is way to powerful for a first level spell. Now i struggle to find other good non concentration damaging spells for my druid. Any suggestions?
The good berries laying under the dirt, yes all ten of them. Magic oversized berries stabbed with a ice knife for the water made of magic is as pure as a nymphs pond, With the control of a fire with magic or without. A good berry tree is born. It is said to be a tree that produce berries with stong healing power able to rival the cure wound spell.... What you think of the ice knife used like this.
quickened spell (X SPELL), then twinned spell (X CANTRIP), which do (X DAMAGE TYPE), with elemental adept 3 turns worth of actions & ignoring resistance is kinda OP
@@ChancesSpellbook the character I'm using right now is actually that, fighter sorcerer multi class! Also, because its the same turn, do I have to cast another cantrip or can I cast a normal spell? Pretty big question!
@@WolfHreda raw twinned spell says that the spell must be incapable of targeting more than one creature and it has to be a creature that is targeted. only one creature is targeted by the casting itself. twinned spell also says it cannot be range of self, and ice knife is 60'. RAW, it works. RAI clarifications by Jeremy crawford may have changed that though
@@obsidiannightwolfe13 Good clarification. Yes, according to Crawford, because the secondary effect can hit multiple creatures, he has stated it's unable to be twinned. But that's a hell of a workhorse if you can twin it.
I used this recently, just played the first session of a new campeign, on my turn, I instantly killed two goblins the third was removed by the rouge but then the orc was too close to our cleric so I was unable to cast it again.
Tbf this spell should be 2nd level but its nice to have such a powerful spell aviable on 1st level helped me win a combat against 4 giant toads who ate a member of my party i had to cut him out ;w;.
I feel quite bad for that battle too since i was the only one that did not take any damage while many others even fell unconcious well having a meat shield out of melee fighters is really helpful in that regard :/
Upcast level 3 and twin shoot it as a sorcerer. Especially brutal if you already cast web and the targets are fumbling their dex saves. Twin firing this spell feels like a great way to smear damage all over the board. Target a low AC monster who just so happens to be standing next to a big mean one. Someone is getting hurt lol
Well, here’s the real question when it comes to the surgery thing that he was mentioning that was the ice knife explode as soon as it touches another object other than you or does it only explode when it’s thrown
Literally was not able to cast this spell once before swapping it out:. The targeting is garbage. Unless the mobs somehow stupidly bunch up away from your front line fighters you can’t use it without hitting them. Take chromatic orb instead. you will be much. happier.

If the target is soaking wet or standing on a wet surface it should do more damage, or make them save against slipping/falling prone??

By RAW, you can't twin Ice Knife. I'd allow it personally, though. It's too cool a spell, no pun intended.

The only problem with this spell is the fact that the initial d10 attack is not increased when up casted. It harms the potential a lot.
If the creature passes its Dex save, does it take cold damage?

Under the right conditions Ice Knife can really turn the tide of battle! Great damage, range, and visuals!

It's a great spell to twin if you're a sorcerer/druid multiclass. This is up there with chaos bolt as far as first lvl twin spells go.
