a while back in my game the players entered a talent show in a little gnome village. The sorcerer's "act" was literally pulling out a random bean from the bag and planting it. It caused a fountain of beer to spring forth from the ground. The entire village got absolutely wasted and he won the talent show. He got lucky I guess- I was hoping for a treant.
Not sure if chocolate tree (leaves and acorns made of chocolate that won’t melt until picked, acorns are plantable and will grow another 10% of the time)is still a result, but that would have won the contest too probably.

My player got a treant from the beans. It tuned out to be a Nice treant that stayed on their's castle garden for the rest of the campaign and became a friend tô share and get knowledge from.
I played in a campaign where my friend was a collector of magic items that was his whole character basically. We were early on in the campaign and he found a home brew magic item that was "lightly cursed" it was called the wand of eye gouging. You picked it up and had to make a decent wisdom saving throw or immediately jab yourself in the eye with it. Didn't do a ton of damage or anything but you could lose an eye. Well once we had both sufficiently messed up and jabbed ourselves he decided to use it on enemies. Pulling it out and loudly announcing he was gonna use his "Wand of Fireball and that its super powerful and expensive" only to cast too hard and accidentally throw it towards that enemy or "drop" it. So many of them fell for it.
The alchemy jug actually had an impact on a campaign I ran. We were playing "Tomb of Annihilation" and my players had great difficulty scavenging for food, and thus sustained themselves on mayonnaise for repeated bouts of week long expeditions into the jungles of Chult.
Early in my marriage we went through 4 fire extinguishers. When your 5 year old has seen enough kitchen fires that the words “daddy, mommy needs you in the kitchen again” are spoken nonchalantly and empty of any hysteria or anxiety you know that cooking oil can be set on fire. 😂
I did a one shot for a mercenary guild and I gave the rogue assassin a rust colored bag of tricks. All the party members had a secret ulterior motive, and the assassin was trying to secretly off the target of the rescue mission. First when they were trying to infiltrate the courtesan house to talk to the top courtesan who might have a clue, he threw a fuzzy ball into the room through the window, which turned into an owl, and the rest of the party barged in claiming to be the owl exterminators. Then later when the target was alone on a rowboat trying to escape and the assassin was trying to kill him in "an accident", he threw another fuzzy ball onto the target's boat. It was a regular old goat. Due to the high stealth, the target didn't notice the assassin, and just thought a goat fell from the mountain onto his boat and was shocked when it proceeded to ram him nearly to death before the assassination attempt was foiled XD.
We found a couple interesting uses for our alchemy jug, both of which involved booze - when we were short on trade goods for the bollywogs who were guiding us to the black dragon's lair, we used it to create beer to bribe them with. After we slew the dragon, we were trying to preserve as much of it as possible - I literally ended up with 350 pounds of "black dragon bones, scales, and horns" in my bag of holding. One of us wanted an eye, but we knew it would rot away. So, we split open a water skin (the mouth was too narrow to fit an eye), put the eye inside, used the Mending cantrip to put the skin back together, then filled it with alcohol from the alchemy jug. Instant pickled dragon eye!
I guess Wile E. Coyote accidentally ordered the Marvelous Pigments when he bought paints from the Acme corporation. That, or he didn't read the instructions all the way through.
I was in a Tomb of Horrors campaign where the alchemy jug was used. They used it to produce mayonnaise to make the permanently invisible beholder visible for 2 rounds. It was to this day the most creative use for that magic item.
I made a homebrew weapon based off the magical pigments: the Paintbrush Glaive. It was for a paladin of the goddess of art. She could use a bonus action to elongate it from a normal paintbrush into the size of a glaive and had the stats of one. It had 10 charges that could be expended to create things following the guidelines of the pigments (we worked together to figure stuff out). Some stuff that she made were a door to knock on when they encountered a half-ogre who got mad that they didn’t ask before coming into his swamp, a bridge to cross a small ravine, a small crate to protect a child NPC during combat, and a door to bypass a puzzle I created (I nerfed this ability as this essentially gave her a free Passwall spell, so it cost 6 charges to only allow her to do it once a day). She loved that glaive
I kinda wonder what would happen if the little child, with those.sad puppydog eyes, asked your paladin to paint him a portrait of his dead parents... Kinda thought of giving this to Batman as a cruel joke "the one thing you want, you cannot have. Hahaha"
Mayo also goes rancid pretty quickly in a hot setting. For a morally bankrupt party, a rogue can hide sacks of mayo around a building, then the Prestidigitation Caster comes by a month later and offers to purge the smell for a small fee.
Yeah, as an example the Romans used olive oil for basically everything. Cooking, personal hygiene, oil lamps, lubricating things (such as the moving parts on that cart you're riding in...or wrestlers/gladiators), probably conditioning wood, etc, etc. If you want to be a stickler, yeah, it's not going to light as easy as a Molotov Cocktail or an alchemist's fire, but yeah, oils tend to burn pretty well.
I checked it out and while, technically, everything has a flash point so everything burns, some don't work as well. Example is Canola and Grape Seed that have contaminants able to gunk up your wick and strangle the flame. However, Canola oil's flash point is 400°F, which is food cooking heat, so constantly applying that heat will.push it past. Applying a match that burns at 4000° won't warm it up high enough to burn.
@@Maninawig What is the flash point of Corn Oil? What about Bacon Grease? Olive Oil? There is more than one type of cooking oil.... (And pretty sure most will catch if you spill it over the flames of a standard propane stove....) So I guess at the very least the flashpoint/flammability of the cooking oil depends on exactly what kind of cooking oil we are talking about.... (The point still stands, if there wasn't at least one type of cooking oil that could catch fire when splashed over an open flame we wouldn't need cooks to know how to deal with a grease/oil fire....)
@@minnion2871 you can easily google the flash points, but the other thing to consider is purity. Kerosene and perifin are very pure oils, meaning there is 100% fuel. Even olive oil needs to be purified (aka virginified) to remove contaminants. As for bacon grease, I have actually seen it tried and it is pretty bad as a fuel source. Corn oil is also highly impure. However, considering the mainstreaming of 5e, if there is a difference in cooking vs burning oil, then it applies to all oils in those categories.

That's a lot of Mayonnaise.. 2 uses I could immediately think of: - It's probably super slipperey, so could be used for a slippery floor trap kind of thing - After a day of being a slippery floor trap, it probably starts smelling disgusting, in case you need something stinky for some reason
The designers - I can't remember exactly who said this, but one of the designers - said that the mayo is there specifically for the players to come up with crazy things to do with it. It's there to generate stories.
@@TheodoreMinick Mayonnaise is probably a rather rare thing in many locales of a DnD setting, so while it may be super cheap in a village where everyone has chickens, you could probably sell jars of it for spending money in many cities, or even low key bribe people with uncommon food. "Can I buy your silence with this jar of Mayonnaise?" Yeah, I wouldn't mind finding an Alchemy Jug. But then again I generally play a gnome, and I generally try for getting to play an artificer, so perhaps it would be better to say that I wouldn't mind making one of these... If nothing else I can just use it to make poison for the rogue.

I was playing a halfing magic sorcerer who was able to get a wand of wonder and just got a bag of magic beans, playing in a game DMed by a guy everyone called Bard for the reasons you would expect. It was part of a club at community college so there were multiple DMs and groups would switch out and it was Bard's first time DMing. I ended up using every bean and almost all charges of the wand of wonder, resulting more combat then expected. By the time we got to the boss who had taken over a rich nobles mansion right before his birthday, my 3ft halfing was shrunk twice to 7.5 inches tall, turned blue, and had a beard made of feathers. Everyone called him Papa Smurf. Then we saw the boss Bard had prepared... A Succubus!!! I knew what I had to do! Papa Smurf walked right up and rolled to Seduce. A Nat 20!!! But Bard was prepared for this and made me roll on a custom made magical STD table! Let's just say the results weren't pretty. Right before we collected our reward Papa Smurf, who had sneezed away his feather beard at that point, went up to the rich Birthday boy and handed him the last Bean. "Happy Birthday sir, plant this and you'll receive one hell of a present" The party nearly pooped their pants as they all needed the reward money and the beans had been bad all but once that day.creating many dangerous creatures. We all held our breath as the plump patron planted the last Bean and Bard rolled on the table, looking at the roll and chuckling to himself. Oh no. "You all watch in anticipation as the ground starts to rumble and shake. From the earth burst forth a ginormous... Geyser of Ale!!!!" We got double the reward and an amazing story, worth every bean!
I'm currently playing in Princes of the Apocalypse and our DM gave a Bag of Beans to our fighter. We were in the air cult tower around 200 feet up and he plants a bean, which spawned a 60 foot pyramid, completely shattering the side of the tower. At least we got a nice little adventure out of it, and some cool treasure. It was just a nice moment to see the look on the DM's face when he had to throw together a dungeon out of nowhere
My group found the jug of alchemy in our first dungeon. It has been super useful. When we have some down time in town I will buy empty vials (1gp) and fill them up with useful items such as acid, poison or even oil and distribute them among the group. We even curried favor with a tribe of lizardfolk who had never heard of mayonnaise. After I used the jug to share it with them my character taught them how to make it for themselves. We had quite a bit of fun when they decided to reward us by making a cake with mayo icing.
I've fallen into this trap before with certain magic items. I like homebrewing things and they don't always go as planned. For example, the final draft of an item I made was an anti-magic shortsword for our party rogue (the one from the Levitating Sand Worm) the original was too broken. The final draft was a +1 weapon which became +2 against enemies with magical defenses which could cast Dispel Magic and Counterspell at base level once per day each. We were nearing the endgame so I was fine with that version. I think the one which opened the most possibilities though was my variation on a Portable Hole. Twice per day it could make a hole in a wall that was 1ft thick or less and be removed from either side. I recognize that the pigments are also capable of this, but by limiting it to just one thing it focused their creativity. They stopped themselves from drowning, blasted someone with pressurized beer from a distillery tank, made multiple escapes, bypassed the levels of certain buildings by placing it on the ceiling, used it to initiate ambushes, to steal things, just lots of nonsense. Nothing that they did broke the game, but I was pleasantly suprised.
bag of tricks story: our wizard was wrapped by a giant snake, slowly being crushed to death, I knew that if i were to attack the snake with my glaive, there was a very good chance of slicing up our wizard in the process. I climbed up the giant snake, forced its mouth open, pulled a ball out of the bag of tricks, forced my hand as far down its throat as I could, and let go of the ball, summoning a fully formed great elk in the giant snake's throat. Our DM ruled that the elk was killed immediately, disappearing back to its pocket dimension, but the snake dropped the wizard, and its jaw was dislocated, removing its bite attack.
In a similar story, but not related to magic items, my fighter once pulled out a silver piece in combat and shoved it down the throat of a grappled and restrained wererat, and watched the wererat foam at the mouth, choke, and die. Best silver piece ever spent.
Dhesyca I wish! We level up whenever our DM says we do. I like the milestone levelling, means we don’t need to track xp, and he can have an easier time prepping encounters
@@nemohimself2580 Actually, the bones spread apart instead of actually dislocating. Their lower jaw is split down the middle, which allows them to do that. The bones of the jaw are also pretty delicate, so I'd argue that a fully grown elk appearing out of no where stands a good chance of breaking the bones as well as yanking them from their socket
My Drow Sorcerer got Nulzar's Marvelous pigments and I used it to fix up a house given to us by the city after a Hydra attack. Seriously one of the most underrated magic items in dnd.
As my party sleept on the top of a tower the elf (chaotic good) split all of the alchemy jugs oil on the stairs, then used misty step to get around it, they burst out laughing when me and our other friend fell down the tower because of the oiled stairs
You made me think that it would be an awesome bartering gimmick. "Your army looks starved. I will give you a goat for some new clothes..." Goat vanishes when they try to eat it and you now have a pattern to mass produce disguises for your group.
@gim mup depends on the campaign I guess. Drakenheim is a world of magic, yet rare will you find such a group. Also, after studying a bit of medieval espionage for a character I am creating, I learned that searching for a general is the best path to failure. Rather "take a moment to observe the group. If they seem distracted, aloof, or whatnot, then chances are they are young and foolish. Approach them or the drunk, for they lack the judgement to proceed with caution" and "there is more merit in travelling as a grunt than a general, for what you lose in access is more than gained in avoiding attention." Both together: approach a group of guards on the edge, who seem the least alert. Offer them the goat for some clothes, mentioning that "any, even of the lowliest soldier would do" They will convince themselves that the glory of the goat far outweighs the risk of an extra single grunt. And if they do think of killing and taking, you can flatter their ego by saying something like "murder and theift? I had heard your general was fearsome and Noble, not such a fool to hire cowards who would deem a cloth more valuable then the life of a human such as yourselves."
I was in a group doing Tomb of Annihilation whose very first item was the Alchemy Jug. We had so much fun with that. Our wizard got it into her head that the mayo could be used to keep the hides of our dinosaur mounts healthy :) And in situations where safe drinking water is a concern, being able to make your own is invaluable.
Ahh the wand of wonder, for when your wizzard gets tired of getting counterspelled. "How can you counter my spell when even I don't know what I'm casting?"
Alchemy Jug is great. In the second campaign I was in, I kept having my wizard go souvenir shopping every time they went to a new town. The DM would have him do a Survival check to see how good a store he found each time (on the basis that determining whether is store is good or bad is a survival-type skill) and since he usually did pretty well finding stuff, pretty quickly other party members started asking to tag along. In the party there was a bugbear ranger who always started up a food stand of some sort in every single town. When she went souvenir shopping with my wizard, the DM let her find a modified Alchemy Jug that could make certain amounts of different kinds of fondue each day. Naturally she used it to start a fondue stand, but she rolled too high on Charisma for marketing her fondue, and ran out, so she ran off to buy ingredients to make more fondue from scratch, and left my poor wizard in charge of trying to keep the customers waiting for fondue from leaving. (He'd volunteered to help out because he thought it might be fun.) He did a surprisingly not terrible job, by spouting random trivia at them. In the third campaign I was in, one of the characters (played by the same person as the previous bugbear ranger) was a bit of an alcoholic, and bought a regular Alchemy Jug early on in the campaign so she would have a constant supply of beer. Well, one day she decided she wanted a sandwich more than beer for whatever reason, and made mayonnaise instead. (Party decided to have a picnic before robbing an evil wizard.) Anyway, at the wizard's house we had to fight some minor fire elemental thingies, which shouldn't have been that hard for the party, except that the alcoholic wound up being the only person to fall into the trap, which meant she had to fight all of them pretty much alone aside from our ranger shooting at them with a bow, and my warlock with terrible aim shooting at them with eldritch blast. The alcoholic was starting to run out of HP, and I was debating on having my warlock jump into the trap to get close enough to heal her, when the player suddenly remembered the mayonnaise, and hurled it at the fire elementals. The DM ruled that since the mayonnaise was presumably refrigerated inside the jug, it dealt cold damage which the minor fire elementals were weak to. It didn't kill them out right, but it weakened them enough that she was able to survive the encounter.
First time DMing and have been loving your videos. Their very first magic item was the Alchemy Jug which they found last session. I made a cool rhyming poem inscribed on the item, to figure it out. “Both feel and sound I full, however if cork you pull, nothing will you find, without words of right kind. Once you have uttered five, the others I will Devine, name any of the ten, make again and again.” Very first use in the next session. At night attacked by a random encounter of Stirges. The Druid rolled extremely well on her Speak to Animals spells. Then she convinced the Stirges that she had a wonderful new food that they would love. So the Stirges feasted on mayonnaise that they sucked up.! And we’re so full, they crawled away and couldn’t fly.
I gave my players a bag of beans, and one time when planting one at the end of LMoP, it sprouted up a pyramid behind Tresendar Manor, paving the way to a fun Mummy Lord adventure where they had to find and defeat the source of corruption that was turning Phandalin into a Mummy-infested desert scape. This became a jumping off point to introducing the Mad Mage of Undermountain who stole the Mummy Lord's heart for nefarious purposes.
If the alchemy jug can produce a mild poison, then maybe an alchemist Artificer can work on concentrating it, or a player can age the wine, with enough planification it can make lots of money.
Gave bag of beans to my party a few months back, they didn't use it and I didn't think much of it. 2 sessions ago, while they have a very defined path ahead that they've decided to go on, so they whip out the bag and plant a bean. Roll a 100. Now they're taking a detour as home invaders in the home of a family of cloud giants... Such an incredible and insane tangent
The tiefling gunslinger in my party once tossed a lion at some local guards as they went to infiltrate a corrupt shogun's manor. The guards were already dealing with insurgents, so, these fewer remaining guys upstairs didn't expect attacks to get up to this level, let alone a lion. But later, the gunslinger sold that item.
I ran a 3.5 game that went all the way to level 20, and even at the very end, they were still using the "Rod of Random" (as they called it) at times when they didn't know what to do with their turn, or when low on resources. It got to the point where I would make my own tables for the Wand of Wonder, just so that they didn't get the same result too many times. It is an indispensable item for any campaign, I think, because it provides some spice.
I recently listened to one of the “Caverns & Creatures” books by Robert Bevan in which the sorcerer character casts his •mount• spell multiple times for just this purpose... I felt guilty about it afterwards, but I laughed my ass off while I was listening! 😂
Amazing video as always! I gave one of my players 7 bags of tricks (of each) and hilarity ensued in the final fight! Also, I flavored that the fluffy balls purred in the bag and while being held lol
I use the bag of tricks to summon animal that I can cast Dragons Breath on for combat (the smaller the better - hand held flamethrower)or as healing potions using Vampiric Touch.
Bag of Beans was one of the greatest items i have given a player. Demolished a large part of a dungeon and a boss monster with a 90s roll and spawned a pyramid in the boss room.
i remember a story involving the paints, the party painted this enormous pile of meat, and cast a spell on it, and "meat man" became the party tank for a while.
I love how even the bag of tricks knew that it should be a bonus action to command a pet - imagine a PHb Beastmaster getting one, and realizing these randomly-summoned creatures are more easily commanded than their own life-bonded animal companion.
Just use the cooking oil as fuel oil. Works fine, think accidentally started kitchen fires! Attract 1d6 hungry creatures if the oil had been used for cooking before.
Been trying to think of what I should have my party do next after clearing their current dungeon. I think the Bag of Beans is a perfect answer! Thanks for reminding me!
I LOVE the Alchemy Jug!! My Ranger/Rogue had one and he uses the oil function for makeshift fire arrows. He lights a torch & places it upright near his shooting position. He dips the arrow tip in the oil, lights it, then fires away. My DM rules it as an additional 1D4 🔥 damage on a hit! It's great!!
@@Haschlatte42 The official description just says "oil". I suppose a DM could specify what kind. Since I was using it to make fire arrows, it could be a lantern/torch oil & that is most definitely flammable!
You know, I think it's up to us DMs to throw zany stuff in an adventure just to nurture the players' imaginations. I would put a scenario in an adventure, just a little tiny stop like a random room, "help us! Our samiches are too dry!!! IF ONLY WE HAD MAYO!!!!"
First time reading about the Alchemy jug in The Dungeon Master's Guide, I was like "May-onn-aise?" "Did I read that right?" 🤨 I'm so going to put this in my campaign, I want to see what my players would do with mayonnaise! 🤣
Oh geez, this reminds me of an infamous magical item we had. I was the DM, and I had a homebrew version of "Bag of Beans," called "Bag of Many Things". You could take out a bean and make your hair change color. Or pull out the next bean and summon a T-800 Terminator. Or a SPAS-12 Shotgun. Or pretty much anything. It had a table of a few hundred possibilities.(I think it was 300, but I'm not sure.) My players loved the thing to bits, and then they hated it. But it became a legend. Enough so, that it had the honor of being the first ever magic item that characters didn't want. They found a normal-looking bag of beans in the middle of the road, with slighly burned grass next to the road. One Detect Magic later, the party went on (with quite speed, I might say,) and the lone bag of beans was left to it's own devices. Some of the players might have yelled "NOT AGAIN!" and I might have laughed.

Just one thing: for many centuries cooking oil was also burning oil... people didn't have gasoline back then. Thing like olive oil or fat was commonly used as fuel for light sources
As a nod to our first campaign, our second DM gave us a bag of tricks in our first session as a reward for winning our first fight of a new campaign. Our gnome fighter tries it out, pulls out a Brown Bear, which he decides to ride out of the cave on its back and decided there and then he was changing his subclass choice to focus on mounted combat rather than range like he initially intended, all because our DM rolled an 8 on his first draw from the bag
I once rode a bag of tricks summoned giant elk into battle as a wild shaped weasel. I had been sneaking around as a weasel earlier and didn't want to end my wild shape early if I didn't have to. I RP'd a crazy weasel battle cry while holding onto the elk's antlers and everything. It was fantastic.
I used a bag of tricks when fighting a Griffen once, I pulled out a bull and ordered it to attack. The DM pointed out the Griffen was airborne, but I had a girdle of giant strength, so he let me throw the bull. I rolled a 20, and the result was like a butcher shop scattered all across the countryside. We also had a wand of wonder, and access to the complete collection of D&D magic items guide, which had an additional six tables to roll results on. We would use it only hoping for a silly result. We did kill a treant by dropping a table on it, which we figured was a bit of irony. The one result we never got was polymorphing your opponent into a giant bunny, no matter how many times we chanted, "Bunny!Bunny! Bunny!" every time we used it.
My party uses the alchemy jug for diplomacy, "Let's get a drink and we can talk this out" or our cleric has an amulet that lets you recover health when drinking alcohol.
Back in 2E, i used a Wand of Wonder to enchant a dagger with powers. I rolled 99, and the 2 effects were Darkness 15' radius, followed by Fireball! It could be used once a day for free, after that it cost a temporary 1 point Con loss for each additional use! It was so handy!
in our campaign we have a hunter with a panther pet, and the bag of tricks, we went into a winter games thing hosted by the place we were at (ice maze with a puzzle at end). we weren't allowed to bring our weapons in so the ranger used speak with animals on a sabre tooth tiger and convinced it to help her to be freed and then she threw 2 fuzzy balls and had 4 pets and negated her lack of damage without a weapon
One of my players used nolzurs marvelous pigments to make a ship. Since a ship is definitely is more than 25 gold, I just halved its hit points and ignore the damage threshold (meaning if it takes even a little damage it still applies) It made for a very cool few travel sessions where the players were more worried about the ships ho than their own ^^
I love homebrewing items that are *initially* random, but with practice become reliable tools. I made a wand with two rotating bands, like a cryptex puzzle, and each band had 3 symbols on it. So the wand would have one of 9 specific effects depending on the selected symbols, but it was up to the characters to figure out the combinations - once the party knows one function, they can reliably use it again or roll to try another one. Another one I'd like to introduce mid-campaign is the "exploding" bomb. It works basically like a flask of alchemist's fire, except on impact it does 3d6 fire damage, but every time you roll a 6 on a damage die, you roll it again and add to the total, potentially in perpetuity.
My very first DMing session I handed out as treasure a bunch of consumable alchemical trinkets and do dads with adventuring utility, and as the piece de resistance, an anytool. It gave the group a good reason to stick together until they hit civilization because they couldn't split it up equably like they could money, and I don't think there's been as much argument about who could carry something as much as that first anytool.
In our campaign we just finished clearing a goblin camp and found the Alchemy Jug, the Bag of Kittens, a Bag of Holding, a cooking pot that makes wonderful meal, a purse that has an endless amount of coins (each day it produces X number of each type of coin as long as a single one of each coin is kept in the purse), a Folding Boat, and my character got a warhammer that has various thunder/lightning attacks, but we have yet to try them out. :D
my eberron party has a bag of tricks; luckily, right when we were traversing the blade desert we rolled two bears and a giant goat so we could all travel safely without risking getting any exhaustion points from the heat lol i love that item so much
I remember the bag of tricks ... the gnome druid at my table got one in my first campaign. He summoned a giant badger to annoy a guard who the dm rolled had a phobia, and the guard scurried up a tree. He also summoned a giant elk then persuaded a different guard to love on it as a distraction. I don't recall that he ever used all three puffs in the same day or that he ever used the animals in combat, but when he did pull out his little bag of tricks, it was always memorable.
The alchemy jug does remind me of this one time, the only way out of a room was through a narrow passageway that was too small for any of our group to comfortably fit through.... we ended up greasing up the dwarf with a grease spell.... Then there was the mage who kept insisting that his wand of wonder made him a healer...
Once in a game i used to run, an alcoholic Barbarian raided a wine cellar after a huge fight, emptying half of it. He picked a peculiar bottle in the process but didn't care enough to check, so he just uncorked it. Well he was reeking of wine so bad that the Efreeti inhabiting it staged an intervention for the guy, refusing to obey his commands until he sobered up. Talk about priceless

a while back in my game the players entered a talent show in a little gnome village. The sorcerer's "act" was literally pulling out a random bean from the bag and planting it. It caused a fountain of beer to spring forth from the ground. The entire village got absolutely wasted and he won the talent show.
He got lucky I guess- I was hoping for a treant.
What can I say? Gnomes know how to have a good time!
Not sure if chocolate tree (leaves and acorns made of chocolate that won’t melt until picked, acorns are plantable and will grow another 10% of the time)is still a result, but that would have won the contest too probably.

I played in a campaign where my friend was a collector of magic items that was his whole character basically. We were early on in the campaign and he found a home brew magic item that was "lightly cursed" it was called the wand of eye gouging. You picked it up and had to make a decent wisdom saving throw or immediately jab yourself in the eye with it. Didn't do a ton of damage or anything but you could lose an eye. Well once we had both sufficiently messed up and jabbed ourselves he decided to use it on enemies. Pulling it out and loudly announcing he was gonna use his "Wand of Fireball and that its super powerful and expensive" only to cast too hard and accidentally throw it towards that enemy or "drop" it. So many of them fell for it.

The alchemy jug actually had an impact on a campaign I ran. We were playing "Tomb of Annihilation" and my players had great difficulty scavenging for food, and thus sustained themselves on mayonnaise for repeated bouts of week long expeditions into the jungles of Chult.
A staff of the woodlands would have also worked .. goodberries.
Also how to feed a steed without footing the bill.

Early in my marriage we went through 4 fire extinguishers. When your 5 year old has seen enough kitchen fires that the words “daddy, mommy needs you in the kitchen again” are spoken nonchalantly and empty of any hysteria or anxiety you know that cooking oil can be set on fire. 😂

I did a one shot for a mercenary guild and I gave the rogue assassin a rust colored bag of tricks. All the party members had a secret ulterior motive, and the assassin was trying to secretly off the target of the rescue mission.
First when they were trying to infiltrate the courtesan house to talk to the top courtesan who might have a clue, he threw a fuzzy ball into the room through the window, which turned into an owl, and the rest of the party barged in claiming to be the owl exterminators.
Then later when the target was alone on a rowboat trying to escape and the assassin was trying to kill him in "an accident", he threw another fuzzy ball onto the target's boat. It was a regular old goat. Due to the high stealth, the target didn't notice the assassin, and just thought a goat fell from the mountain onto his boat and was shocked when it proceeded to ram him nearly to death before the assassination attempt was foiled XD.

We found a couple interesting uses for our alchemy jug, both of which involved booze - when we were short on trade goods for the bollywogs who were guiding us to the black dragon's lair, we used it to create beer to bribe them with. After we slew the dragon, we were trying to preserve as much of it as possible - I literally ended up with 350 pounds of "black dragon bones, scales, and horns" in my bag of holding. One of us wanted an eye, but we knew it would rot away. So, we split open a water skin (the mouth was too narrow to fit an eye), put the eye inside, used the Mending cantrip to put the skin back together, then filled it with alcohol from the alchemy jug. Instant pickled dragon eye!

I was in a Tomb of Horrors campaign where the alchemy jug was used. They used it to produce mayonnaise to make the permanently invisible beholder visible for 2 rounds. It was to this day the most creative use for that magic item.
I made a homebrew weapon based off the magical pigments: the Paintbrush Glaive. It was for a paladin of the goddess of art. She could use a bonus action to elongate it from a normal paintbrush into the size of a glaive and had the stats of one. It had 10 charges that could be expended to create things following the guidelines of the pigments (we worked together to figure stuff out). Some stuff that she made were a door to knock on when they encountered a half-ogre who got mad that they didn’t ask before coming into his swamp, a bridge to cross a small ravine, a small crate to protect a child NPC during combat, and a door to bypass a puzzle I created (I nerfed this ability as this essentially gave her a free Passwall spell, so it cost 6 charges to only allow her to do it once a day). She loved that glaive

Mayo also goes rancid pretty quickly in a hot setting. For a morally bankrupt party, a rogue can hide sacks of mayo around a building, then the Prestidigitation Caster comes by a month later and offers to purge the smell for a small fee.

Yeah, as an example the Romans used olive oil for basically everything. Cooking, personal hygiene, oil lamps, lubricating things (such as the moving parts on that cart you're riding in...or wrestlers/gladiators), probably conditioning wood, etc, etc.
If you want to be a stickler, yeah, it's not going to light as easy as a Molotov Cocktail or an alchemist's fire, but yeah, oils tend to burn pretty well.
I checked it out and while, technically, everything has a flash point so everything burns, some don't work as well. Example is Canola and Grape Seed that have contaminants able to gunk up your wick and strangle the flame.
However, Canola oil's flash point is 400°F, which is food cooking heat, so constantly applying that heat will.push it past. Applying a match that burns at 4000° won't warm it up high enough to burn.
@@Maninawig What is the flash point of Corn Oil? What about Bacon Grease? Olive Oil? There is more than one type of cooking oil.... (And pretty sure most will catch if you spill it over the flames of a standard propane stove....)
So I guess at the very least the flashpoint/flammability of the cooking oil depends on exactly what kind of cooking oil we are talking about.... (The point still stands, if there wasn't at least one type of cooking oil that could catch fire when splashed over an open flame we wouldn't need cooks to know how to deal with a grease/oil fire....)
@@minnion2871 you can easily google the flash points, but the other thing to consider is purity. Kerosene and perifin are very pure oils, meaning there is 100% fuel. Even olive oil needs to be purified (aka virginified) to remove contaminants.
As for bacon grease, I have actually seen it tried and it is pretty bad as a fuel source. Corn oil is also highly impure.
However, considering the mainstreaming of 5e, if there is a difference in cooking vs burning oil, then it applies to all oils in those categories.

That's a lot of Mayonnaise.. 2 uses I could immediately think of:
- It's probably super slipperey, so could be used for a slippery floor trap kind of thing
- After a day of being a slippery floor trap, it probably starts smelling disgusting, in case you need something stinky for some reason
The designers - I can't remember exactly who said this, but one of the designers - said that the mayo is there specifically for the players to come up with crazy things to do with it. It's there to generate stories.

@@TheodoreMinick Mayonnaise is probably a rather rare thing in many locales of a DnD setting, so while it may be super cheap in a village where everyone has chickens, you could probably sell jars of it for spending money in many cities, or even low key bribe people with uncommon food.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind finding an Alchemy Jug. But then again I generally play a gnome, and I generally try for getting to play an artificer, so perhaps it would be better to say that I wouldn't mind making one of these... If nothing else I can just use it to make poison for the rogue.

I was playing a halfing magic sorcerer who was able to get a wand of wonder and just got a bag of magic beans, playing in a game DMed by a guy everyone called Bard for the reasons you would expect.
It was part of a club at community college so there were multiple DMs and groups would switch out and it was Bard's first time DMing. I ended up using every bean and almost all charges of the wand of wonder, resulting more combat then expected. By the time we got to the boss who had taken over a rich nobles mansion right before his birthday, my 3ft halfing was shrunk twice to 7.5 inches tall, turned blue, and had a beard made of feathers. Everyone called him Papa Smurf. Then we saw the boss Bard had prepared...
A Succubus!!!
I knew what I had to do! Papa Smurf walked right up and rolled to Seduce.
A Nat 20!!!
But Bard was prepared for this and made me roll on a custom made magical STD table!
Let's just say the results weren't pretty.
Right before we collected our reward Papa Smurf, who had sneezed away his feather beard at that point, went up to the rich Birthday boy and handed him the last Bean.
"Happy Birthday sir, plant this and you'll receive one hell of a present"
The party nearly pooped their pants as they all needed the reward money and the beans had been bad all but once that day.creating many dangerous creatures.
We all held our breath as the plump patron planted the last Bean and Bard rolled on the table, looking at the roll and chuckling to himself. Oh no.
"You all watch in anticipation as the ground starts to rumble and shake. From the earth burst forth a ginormous... Geyser of Ale!!!!"
We got double the reward and an amazing story, worth every bean!
I'm currently playing in Princes of the Apocalypse and our DM gave a Bag of Beans to our fighter. We were in the air cult tower around 200 feet up and he plants a bean, which spawned a 60 foot pyramid, completely shattering the side of the tower. At least we got a nice little adventure out of it, and some cool treasure. It was just a nice moment to see the look on the DM's face when he had to throw together a dungeon out of nowhere

My group found the jug of alchemy in our first dungeon. It has been super useful. When we have some down time in town I will buy empty vials (1gp) and fill them up with useful items such as acid, poison or even oil and distribute them among the group.
We even curried favor with a tribe of lizardfolk who had never heard of mayonnaise. After I used the jug to share it with them my character taught them how to make it for themselves. We had quite a bit of fun when they decided to reward us by making a cake with mayo icing.
I've fallen into this trap before with certain magic items. I like homebrewing things and they don't always go as planned.
For example, the final draft of an item I made was an anti-magic shortsword for our party rogue (the one from the Levitating Sand Worm) the original was too broken. The final draft was a +1 weapon which became +2 against enemies with magical defenses which could cast Dispel Magic and Counterspell at base level once per day each. We were nearing the endgame so I was fine with that version.
I think the one which opened the most possibilities though was my variation on a Portable Hole. Twice per day it could make a hole in a wall that was 1ft thick or less and be removed from either side. I recognize that the pigments are also capable of this, but by limiting it to just one thing it focused their creativity.
They stopped themselves from drowning, blasted someone with pressurized beer from a distillery tank, made multiple escapes, bypassed the levels of certain buildings by placing it on the ceiling, used it to initiate ambushes, to steal things, just lots of nonsense. Nothing that they did broke the game, but I was pleasantly suprised.
bag of tricks story:
our wizard was wrapped by a giant snake, slowly being crushed to death, I knew that if i were to attack the snake with my glaive, there was a very good chance of slicing up our wizard in the process. I climbed up the giant snake, forced its mouth open, pulled a ball out of the bag of tricks, forced my hand as far down its throat as I could, and let go of the ball, summoning a fully formed great elk in the giant snake's throat.
Our DM ruled that the elk was killed immediately, disappearing back to its pocket dimension, but the snake dropped the wizard, and its jaw was dislocated, removing its bite attack.
Other than the fact that snakes can dislocate their jaws anyway, that's pretty cool

In a similar story, but not related to magic items, my fighter once pulled out a silver piece in combat and shoved it down the throat of a grappled and restrained wererat, and watched the wererat foam at the mouth, choke, and die. Best silver piece ever spent.
Dhesyca I wish! We level up whenever our DM says we do. I like the milestone levelling, means we don’t need to track xp, and he can have an easier time prepping encounters
@@nemohimself2580 Actually, the bones spread apart instead of actually dislocating. Their lower jaw is split down the middle, which allows them to do that. The bones of the jaw are also pretty delicate, so I'd argue that a fully grown elk appearing out of no where stands a good chance of breaking the bones as well as yanking them from their socket
My Drow Sorcerer got Nulzar's Marvelous pigments and I used it to fix up a house given to us by the city after a Hydra attack. Seriously one of the most underrated magic items in dnd.
As my party sleept on the top of a tower the elf (chaotic good) split all of the alchemy jugs oil on the stairs, then used misty step to get around it, they burst out laughing when me and our other friend fell down the tower because of the oiled stairs

@gim mup depends on the campaign I guess. Drakenheim is a world of magic, yet rare will you find such a group.
Also, after studying a bit of medieval espionage for a character I am creating, I learned that searching for a general is the best path to failure. Rather "take a moment to observe the group. If they seem distracted, aloof, or whatnot, then chances are they are young and foolish. Approach them or the drunk, for they lack the judgement to proceed with caution" and "there is more merit in travelling as a grunt than a general, for what you lose in access is more than gained in avoiding attention."
Both together: approach a group of guards on the edge, who seem the least alert. Offer them the goat for some clothes, mentioning that "any, even of the lowliest soldier would do"
They will convince themselves that the glory of the goat far outweighs the risk of an extra single grunt. And if they do think of killing and taking, you can flatter their ego by saying something like "murder and theift? I had heard your general was fearsome and Noble, not such a fool to hire cowards who would deem a cloth more valuable then the life of a human such as yourselves."
I was in a group doing Tomb of Annihilation whose very first item was the Alchemy Jug. We had so much fun with that. Our wizard got it into her head that the mayo could be used to keep the hides of our dinosaur mounts healthy :) And in situations where safe drinking water is a concern, being able to make your own is invaluable.
Ahh the wand of wonder, for when your wizzard gets tired of getting counterspelled.

Alchemy Jug is great. In the second campaign I was in, I kept having my wizard go souvenir shopping every time they went to a new town. The DM would have him do a Survival check to see how good a store he found each time (on the basis that determining whether is store is good or bad is a survival-type skill) and since he usually did pretty well finding stuff, pretty quickly other party members started asking to tag along. In the party there was a bugbear ranger who always started up a food stand of some sort in every single town. When she went souvenir shopping with my wizard, the DM let her find a modified Alchemy Jug that could make certain amounts of different kinds of fondue each day. Naturally she used it to start a fondue stand, but she rolled too high on Charisma for marketing her fondue, and ran out, so she ran off to buy ingredients to make more fondue from scratch, and left my poor wizard in charge of trying to keep the customers waiting for fondue from leaving. (He'd volunteered to help out because he thought it might be fun.) He did a surprisingly not terrible job, by spouting random trivia at them.
In the third campaign I was in, one of the characters (played by the same person as the previous bugbear ranger) was a bit of an alcoholic, and bought a regular Alchemy Jug early on in the campaign so she would have a constant supply of beer. Well, one day she decided she wanted a sandwich more than beer for whatever reason, and made mayonnaise instead. (Party decided to have a picnic before robbing an evil wizard.) Anyway, at the wizard's house we had to fight some minor fire elemental thingies, which shouldn't have been that hard for the party, except that the alcoholic wound up being the only person to fall into the trap, which meant she had to fight all of them pretty much alone aside from our ranger shooting at them with a bow, and my warlock with terrible aim shooting at them with eldritch blast. The alcoholic was starting to run out of HP, and I was debating on having my warlock jump into the trap to get close enough to heal her, when the player suddenly remembered the mayonnaise, and hurled it at the fire elementals. The DM ruled that since the mayonnaise was presumably refrigerated inside the jug, it dealt cold damage which the minor fire elementals were weak to. It didn't kill them out right, but it weakened them enough that she was able to survive the encounter.

I made so much mayonaise using the alchemy jug that my party had to take it away from me.
First time DMing and have been loving your videos. Their very first magic item was the Alchemy Jug which they found last session. I made a cool rhyming poem inscribed on the item, to figure it out. “Both feel and sound I full, however if cork you pull, nothing will you find, without words of right kind. Once you have uttered five, the others I will Devine, name any of the ten, make again and again.”
Very first use in the next session. At night attacked by a random encounter of Stirges. The Druid rolled extremely well on her Speak to Animals spells. Then she convinced the Stirges that she had a wonderful new food that they would love. So the Stirges feasted on mayonnaise that they sucked up.! And we’re so full, they crawled away and couldn’t fly.
I gave my players a bag of beans, and one time when planting one at the end of LMoP, it sprouted up a pyramid behind Tresendar Manor, paving the way to a fun Mummy Lord adventure where they had to find and defeat the source of corruption that was turning Phandalin into a Mummy-infested desert scape. This became a jumping off point to introducing the Mad Mage of Undermountain who stole the Mummy Lord's heart for nefarious purposes.
My favorite magic item hands down is the Immovable Rod.
If the alchemy jug can produce a mild poison, then maybe an alchemist Artificer can work on concentrating it, or a player can age the wine, with enough planification it can make lots of money.
Fun fact - Wile E Coyote actually had the item Marvellous Pigments. That's how he painted tunnels that Roadrunner could run through.
Gave bag of beans to my party a few months back, they didn't use it and I didn't think much of it. 2 sessions ago, while they have a very defined path ahead that they've decided to go on, so they whip out the bag and plant a bean. Roll a 100. Now they're taking a detour as home invaders in the home of a family of cloud giants... Such an incredible and insane tangent
The tiefling gunslinger in my party once tossed a lion at some local guards as they went to infiltrate a corrupt shogun's manor. The guards were already dealing with insurgents, so, these fewer remaining guys upstairs didn't expect attacks to get up to this level, let alone a lion. But later, the gunslinger sold that item.
The pigments are great. Just seeing what Jester in C2 of CR has done with them alone has convinced me of this.
I ran a 3.5 game that went all the way to level 20, and even at the very end, they were still using the "Rod of Random" (as they called it) at times when they didn't know what to do with their turn, or when low on resources. It got to the point where I would make my own tables for the Wand of Wonder, just so that they didn't get the same result too many times. It is an indispensable item for any campaign, I think, because it provides some spice.

I recently listened to one of the “Caverns & Creatures” books by Robert Bevan in which the sorcerer character casts his •mount• spell multiple times for just this purpose...
I felt guilty about it afterwards, but I laughed my ass off while I was listening! 😂
Amazing video as always! I gave one of my players 7 bags of tricks (of each) and hilarity ensued in the final fight! Also, I flavored that the fluffy balls purred in the bag and while being held lol
I use the bag of tricks to summon animal that I can cast Dragons Breath on for combat (the smaller the better - hand held flamethrower)or as healing potions using Vampiric Touch.

I love these types of items, they're so fun to throw into sessions because you don't normally get to see them in campaigns (ones I've been in anyway)

Bag of Beans was one of the greatest items i have given a player. Demolished a large part of a dungeon and a boss monster with a 90s roll and spawned a pyramid in the boss room.

i remember a story involving the paints, the party painted this enormous pile of meat, and cast a spell on it, and "meat man" became the party tank for a while.
I love how even the bag of tricks knew that it should be a bonus action to command a pet - imagine a PHb Beastmaster getting one, and realizing these randomly-summoned creatures are more easily commanded than their own life-bonded animal companion.
Just use the cooking oil as fuel oil. Works fine, think accidentally started kitchen fires! Attract 1d6 hungry creatures if the oil had been used for cooking before.
Been trying to think of what I should have my party do next after clearing their current dungeon. I think the Bag of Beans is a perfect answer! Thanks for reminding me!

I LOVE the Alchemy Jug!! My Ranger/Rogue had one and he uses the oil function for makeshift fire arrows. He lights a torch & places it upright near his shooting position. He dips the arrow tip in the oil, lights it, then fires away. My DM rules it as an additional 1D4 🔥 damage on a hit! It's great!!
Cooking oil doesnt burn tho xD still love the idea!
@@Haschlatte42 The official description just says "oil". I suppose a DM could specify what kind. Since I was using it to make fire arrows, it could be a lantern/torch oil & that is most definitely flammable!

You know, I think it's up to us DMs to throw zany stuff in an adventure just to nurture the players' imaginations. I would put a scenario in an adventure, just a little tiny stop like a random room, "help us! Our samiches are too dry!!! IF ONLY WE HAD MAYO!!!!"

Oh geez, this reminds me of an infamous magical item we had. I was the DM, and I had a homebrew version of "Bag of Beans," called "Bag of Many Things". You could take out a bean and make your hair change color. Or pull out the next bean and summon a T-800 Terminator. Or a SPAS-12 Shotgun. Or pretty much anything. It had a table of a few hundred possibilities.(I think it was 300, but I'm not sure.) My players loved the thing to bits, and then they hated it. But it became a legend. Enough so, that it had the honor of being the first ever magic item that characters didn't want. They found a normal-looking bag of beans in the middle of the road, with slighly burned grass next to the road. One Detect Magic later, the party went on (with quite speed, I might say,) and the lone bag of beans was left to it's own devices. Some of the players might have yelled "NOT AGAIN!" and I might have laughed.
I've used a wand of wonder exactly two times. First time I managed to turn a fire giant to stone with it, second time it just rained.

Just one thing: for many centuries cooking oil was also burning oil... people didn't have gasoline back then.
Thing like olive oil or fat was commonly used as fuel for light sources
As a nod to our first campaign, our second DM gave us a bag of tricks in our first session as a reward for winning our first fight of a new campaign. Our gnome fighter tries it out, pulls out a Brown Bear, which he decides to ride out of the cave on its back and decided there and then he was changing his subclass choice to focus on mounted combat rather than range like he initially intended, all because our DM rolled an 8 on his first draw from the bag
I once rode a bag of tricks summoned giant elk into battle as a wild shaped weasel. I had been sneaking around as a weasel earlier and didn't want to end my wild shape early if I didn't have to. I RP'd a crazy weasel battle cry while holding onto the elk's antlers and everything. It was fantastic.
I used a bag of tricks when fighting a Griffen once, I pulled out a bull and ordered it to attack. The DM pointed out the Griffen was airborne, but I had a girdle of giant strength, so he let me throw the bull. I rolled a 20, and the result was like a butcher shop scattered all across the countryside. We also had a wand of wonder, and access to the complete collection of D&D magic items guide, which had an additional six tables to roll results on. We would use it only hoping for a silly result. We did kill a treant by dropping a table on it, which we figured was a bit of irony. The one result we never got was polymorphing your opponent into a giant bunny, no matter how many times we chanted, "Bunny!Bunny! Bunny!" every time we used it.

My party uses the alchemy jug for diplomacy, "Let's get a drink and we can talk this out" or our cleric has an amulet that lets you recover health when drinking alcohol.
Back in 2E, i used a Wand of Wonder to enchant a dagger with powers. I rolled 99, and the 2 effects were Darkness 15' radius, followed by Fireball! It could be used once a day for free, after that it cost a temporary 1 point Con loss for each additional use! It was so handy!

in our campaign we have a hunter with a panther pet, and the bag of tricks, we went into a winter games thing hosted by the place we were at (ice maze with a puzzle at end). we weren't allowed to bring our weapons in so the ranger used speak with animals on a sabre tooth tiger and convinced it to help her to be freed and then she threw 2 fuzzy balls and had 4 pets and negated her lack of damage without a weapon
One of my players used nolzurs marvelous pigments to make a ship. Since a ship is definitely is more than 25 gold, I just halved its hit points and ignore the damage threshold (meaning if it takes even a little damage it still applies) It made for a very cool few travel sessions where the players were more worried about the ships ho than their own ^^
I love homebrewing items that are *initially* random, but with practice become reliable tools. I made a wand with two rotating bands, like a cryptex puzzle, and each band had 3 symbols on it. So the wand would have one of 9 specific effects depending on the selected symbols, but it was up to the characters to figure out the combinations - once the party knows one function, they can reliably use it again or roll to try another one.
Another one I'd like to introduce mid-campaign is the "exploding" bomb. It works basically like a flask of alchemist's fire, except on impact it does 3d6 fire damage, but every time you roll a 6 on a damage die, you roll it again and add to the total, potentially in perpetuity.
My very first DMing session I handed out as treasure a bunch of consumable alchemical trinkets and do dads with adventuring utility, and as the piece de resistance, an anytool. It gave the group a good reason to stick together until they hit civilization because they couldn't split it up equably like they could money, and I don't think there's been as much argument about who could carry something as much as that first anytool.
In our campaign we just finished clearing a goblin camp and found the Alchemy Jug, the Bag of Kittens, a Bag of Holding, a cooking pot that makes wonderful meal, a purse that has an endless amount of coins (each day it produces X number of each type of coin as long as a single one of each coin is kept in the purse), a Folding Boat, and my character got a warhammer that has various thunder/lightning attacks, but we have yet to try them out. :D
For honey, my party once used it as a glue to stick magic explosive powder on a cavern wall. (We actually bought the honey on a shopping spree 😅)

my eberron party has a bag of tricks; luckily, right when we were traversing the blade desert we rolled two bears and a giant goat so we could all travel safely without risking getting any exhaustion points from the heat lol i love that item so much
x amount of mayonnaise well you could use it as an impromptu grease spell. just pour the mayonnaise on the floor and watch the fun begin.
I remember the bag of tricks ... the gnome druid at my table got one in my first campaign. He summoned a giant badger to annoy a guard who the dm rolled had a phobia, and the guard scurried up a tree. He also summoned a giant elk then persuaded a different guard to love on it as a distraction. I don't recall that he ever used all three puffs in the same day or that he ever used the animals in combat, but when he did pull out his little bag of tricks, it was always memorable.
The alchemy jug does remind me of this one time, the only way out of a room was through a narrow passageway that was too small for any of our group to comfortably fit through.... we ended up greasing up the dwarf with a grease spell....
Then there was the mage who kept insisting that his wand of wonder made him a healer...
Once in a game i used to run, an alcoholic Barbarian raided a wine cellar after a huge fight, emptying half of it. He picked a peculiar bottle in the process but didn't care enough to check, so he just uncorked it. Well he was reeking of wine so bad that the Efreeti inhabiting it staged an intervention for the guy, refusing to obey his commands until he sobered up. Talk about priceless

Alchemy Jug and Amulet of the Drunkard seems like actually a lowkey decent combo.
