Being able to use the dodge action and cast sanctuary as a bonus action brings a PC an incredible level of defense. It’s almost like triple disadvantage for attack rolls. I had a heavily armored low level cleric who had 1 slot left cast sanctuary and walk around the battlefield using the help action. Was remarkably effective.

I was playing a 2nd Level Cleric / Bard in Curse of Strahd. Our tank had quit the party and we decided to continue, so it was just me and two 2nd level rangers. We came to an intersection and 3 ghouls attacked. I blocked the tunnel with by body, used the dodge action and Sanctuary as my bonus action. I continued to dodge each round until the Rangers had finished off all of the ghouls. It was a deadly difficulty encounter and I had only 9 of my 15 hps when it started, but we finished it without any of us taking damage. Sanctuary really saved my bacon.
Maintaining self-buffed Sanctuary , my forge cleric can use bonus action to manage Animated objects/ animated dead skeletons to atk, and use action to cast minor illusion cantrip for creating 1-min illusional walls/objects to cover ranged allies, so they have adv atk.
Another abjuration spell that can fuel the Abjuration Ward that I mentioned before, though you'll need to get the spell via something like multi-class or Magic Initiate. If you're doing an escort mission, it basically make it so that no one can actively target the escort unless they pass a wisdom save, giving an extra layer of protection to them.
I love Sanctuary! Artificer Battle Smith can attack 2 time then use Bonus Action to cast it. Making it best Offense & Defensive Spell if you know to play it way.
I to this day do not know where to get a silver mirror, if that means a mirror with a silver frame or a mirror where the reflection is induced by sheet of silver nor how much one would cost.
In the campaign I run the players are a wolf riding goblin raid party, and I have a few home rules to make mounted combat fee distinct from combat on foot (I treat people knocked off a mount that moved during the last opportunity it had to do so as falling the distance the mount moved to emphasize how fast they're going; giving advantage to attack creatures smaller than your mount, while giving them disadvantage to attack you, etc.). These two changes altered tactics a lot, including making it so attacking mounts is more advantageous. One player, a banyearak (priest of Khurgorbeayag) uses sanctuary on his mount to avoid this problem.
This spell is so underrated. Ally low? Cast Sanctuary to keep them alive while they heal. Ally went down near you? Forget the virgin Healing Word, cast Sanctuary, and feed them a healing potion so they don't get knocked back down the next turn, then refer to above :D Need to retreat? Cast Sanctuary and take the dodge action every turn as you walk away while the enemy can't hit you. Want to lock down a passageway? Cast Sanctuary and take the dodge action every turn as your party lobs ranged attacks and spells in perfect safety (Works especially well if you have high AC or are casting it on the tank). Accidently ran into the world boss? Nope, the f out of there with a good ol' Sanctuary. Have a mount? Cast Sanctuary, now you can make sure it won't die in your next encounter. Doing an escort quest? Cast Sanctuary to make sure the NPCs are safe even in combat. Concentrating on spell (like banishment) that you can't afford to drop? Cast Sanctuary to avoid getting any concentration checks.
Take a 1 lvl dip into Life Cleric for your Shepherd Druid and cast conjure animals/woodland beings, then sanctuary, use the dodge action or unicorn spirit/ heal/ buff allies on subsequent turns.
I'm playing a 1v1 combat scenario one shot. Devine sorcerer has a ton of insane non-consentration long lasting defense focused spells. But you can only cast on leveled spell per round. You can cast sanctuary, and then activate the list of Mirror image Blink Mage armor Haste Spiritual weapon Armor of Agathist Maybe darkvision if needed And when your finally ready you can let loose your spellcasting fury
Situation: An attacker wishes to move up to a player with Sanctuary and use an Attack Action to hit him with an axe. The attacker gets two attacks per Attack Action. The attacker then plans to use a Bonus Action to cast Spiritual Weapon to again attack the defender with Sanctuary. Question 1: If the Attacker makes his initial WIS SAVE against Sanctuary, does he get to make both attack rolls, or does he need a second WIS SAVE to get the second attack roll in? Question 2: If the Attacker made his Initial WIS SAVE and made his melee attacks, would he need a second WIS SAVE to cast Spiritual Weapon afterwards, or does the first successful save essentially end the spells protection against all future attacks by that attacker?
Question for the Artificer and beast master ranger. Cast on yourself then using the beast/cannon/steel defender. The steel and beast has it's own attack and the cannon is based on your spell attack or DC. What would work and won't
@@ChancesSpellbook should work for the beast and steel defender but it's hard to say for the cannon due to its attack saying- ballista "make a ranged spell attack" and flamethrower "they must make a Dex save against your spell DC" and also you are commanding it. Simular to using a already active spiritual weapon but it is a physical object that can be targeted and destroyed but is affecting the creature and doing damage not technically caused by you but controlled. Spiritual guardians is simular but is a spell coming from a person or spike growth that an enemy walks into but could have avoided (oh they were hurt by your spell so you loose sanctuary)
For the Party Buffer. This is Great if your playing a Life or Grave Cleric. Its also good with a Light Clerics Channel Divinity since its not a spell. If you think about it. This is a great spell for evil characters/npc's to use. Once you have stolen something or Killed someone for some reason and another and you plan on running then cast this spell for improved survival. You can damage the path as they chase you since its not an attack on them.
Divine Soulcerer gives a friend Dragon's Breath one turn, and Sanctuaries himself the next turn. It's my friend doing it! I'm just casting Silennnnnnnnothing!

I normally use it on myself while letting others see me cast it. Sort of my way of proving I'm going to be peaceful and my dm gives me advantage on persuasion. Also like casting this on myself and standing in front of people to block attacks.
you could use this spell and some other defensive and support spells along with a build that makes you have a high AC to become the ultimate pacifist lmao

@@camelvids10 even if the casting time is a bonus action, it is stated in the rules that you cannot cast more than one spell in a turn.
This is good to protect a fallen ally so they can get some healing in without worrying about potentially failing the death saves

Steel defender requires your bonus action to command it. If no command is given, the defender takes the dodge action by default.

if the enemy succeds on wisdom throw, and lands a hit. does the spell negate damage and break or does the character take damage?
