I imagine at least one might find its way to a museum. If not, it’s not all too big of a deal. There’s 3 amtrak f40s in a museum, plus WMSR’s F40-2F, and coaster 2103 and 2105. The tri-trail PHLs are a big question mark. I think they’re preserved, but maybe not.

Much like the old Pacifics, GS Series, Trainmasters, GP9s, and SD9s, these F40PHs will be just sweet memories for those who knew and rode these fantastic machines for close to 40 years on the Peninsula Commute.

Unfortunately, as part of the conditions to receive state funding for the electrification project, Caltrain has to destroy them. The major components all need to have holes bored in them to make them unusable. The only future they have left are as possible NPCUs - which might not be the worst idea given the current cab car issues on the Surfline.

I’ve never seen CalTrain (just like lots of other railroads) but the F40s will be greatly missed. The EMD F40PH was and still is a big icon in North American railroads. The F40 is pretty much what saved passenger service. The F40 will be in the history books of CalTrain as the first primary locomotive.
Gonna miss these girls as a peninsula foamer. I’d be more happy if they put P2s onto the Stadlers but whatever I’m just happy to see these new units in service
Even though I grew up in SoCal, I have a brief memory of a fourth grade field trip to Sanfrancisco. I remember seeeing one of those, and I thought it looked awesome. RIP Caltrain F40PHs, let’s hope Metra or another rail operator buys them.

It sad the f40s era is coming to end for Caltrain. I remember seeing these locomotives whenever going through San Francisco. Going to miss these iconic classic locomotives.
It’s so sad to see F40s go. I went to San Francisco back in 2021 and I saw them! Caltrain really won’t be the same without them being all electric trains now.
Great video Mike these f40ph's are my favorite locomotives with the MP36PH-3Cs. These are very reliable locomotives I honestly wished I got to see these. Glad the MP36s are staying at least a couple have been rebuilt. The P2 Horns on the F40 and MP36s locos give that metrolink vibe when they use to have their f59s running up and down.

I'm pretty sure that as part of the conditions for funding the electrification plan that caltrain can only sell the F40s to a party that agrees to not operate them.
@@BowlOfRed Not sure about the exact terms, but CalTrain will be disabling all the diesel engines and generators on all 20 locomotives. There may be exemptions for converting to Tier 4 but not sure.
Cal-Train F40PH-2CAT No. 919 (County of Santa Clara) was wrecked in a collision with construction equipment in San Bruno in March of 2022 and was (or will be) written off the roster.

Very interesting that this section of track is to be electrified. It's a shame, I liked these F40PH diesel locomotives. But progress cannot be stopped. In Germany, apart from a few branch lines, everything is already under overhead wire. Thanks for showing and have a nice day.
It's the saddest month for Caltrain. Growing up with the diesel for years was my childhood. I hope all go to a good home after retirement. This makes me very sad that the retirement of those legends are retiring
Even though I wish I could’ve caught the ace train in San Jose, I’m glad I still rode on the F40s and the gallery coaches several times before. Especially after seeing the coaster fan video about the F40s, with their legacy with Amtrak and other commuters; I knew that the Caltrain F40s’ days would eventually be numbered. I am happy for the times I got to ride behind them. From San Francisco to San Jose, and back again; my last major ride on them was from San Francisco to San Jose to connect to the coast starlight bound for Los Angeles in recognition of the historic daylight trains. Who thinks that Caltrain should occasionally host excursions with Southern Pacific 2472 and the existing Herriman coaches that are sprinkled throughout train museums on the corridor? Either way, I hope that, and maybe any spared F40 and gallery coaches could be preserved along with 2472 and the described Herriman heavyweight coaches.
The F40PH's were essentially bought new in the 1980's along with brand new gallery cars because at the time of the Caltrain takeover, the Southern Pacific commuter rail cars and locomotives were just getting way too old even by the early 1980's.
It would be neat if the old railcars could be modified to be compatible with the new KISS EMUs. In Switzerland, the Rhaetian railway has EMUs that can drag along a bunch of extra passenger or freight cars. The CalTrain KISS has triple the power of a F40PH, certainly enough to do that, though it almost certainly isn't designed for that.

I was able to get my final showing of them just last month, just barely before the Stadler KISS Soft Launch. My Favorite of them is 906.
They're really cool units. First locomotives funded by CalTrans. Hopefully one makes it into a museum!
