Brilliant - absolutely brilliant. Not coz he's using parallel distortion (which is great) - but coz of the intense depth of his creativity and his willingness and desire to explore - to live outside the box. I love him! Thanks so much for introducing me to this wonderful genius.
The people on here saying the kick drum sounds awful, really? He knows what he's doing and he thinking on terms of how it sits in the mx not how it sounds in isolation. It's Tchad Blake fs if there has been a more adventurous and influential mixer/engineer in the last 30 years I've yet to see it. He mixed Tom Waits Mule Variations! So wise up and listen and learn.
Some people might hate that tone "oh too dirty, oh awful, doesn't sounds like a kick" Buuut man, i just love when he goes nuts and destroys the drumkit that is what makes Tchad such a badass producer
tchad's voice is gravely because he's been very sick. he had cancer. besides being an incredible engineer, he's a helluva nice guy. always funny to see internet haters ripping on someone with no idea what their story is.
It was a joke....even Tschad might appreciate that joke. Like you say, there is something funny about haters ripping on someone with no idea what their story is.
I love the way Tshad thinks. He sounds like a part of me at the desk. And I love his voice. He's got a complex Texas voice with the same attitude that makes you love Christian Slater and Billy Bob Thornton. And he looks like my Dad.
The HD Pod Pro is also awesome for Drums. Really creamy sounding. Used it on strings a while ago too on a fender blues setting. Was glorious. Good luck replicating that haha
The beauty of mixing is how individual of an art form it is with endless possibilities. I really enjoyed how much he enjoyed the sound, even though to be honest the processing on this kick drum sounded awful to my ears haha. I have my own quirky taste though. I'm a big fan of slight digital clipping and a bit of distortion but in the higher frequencies only, preserving the thud of the kick but giving the top end this unique "smack". I also like them quite loud in the mix. I have a lot of respect for engineers that take risks and have their own vision
I think what a lot of people miss when watching this video is the intention behind Tchad's parallel distortion. Tchad is known for not using reverb or TBEs to build a space or ambience in the mix, and instead uses this method of distortion to give him a similar effect, albeit with vastly different results.
well you know thats why they are professional mixing engineers because the go out of the box . because thay are not afraid to do new things. and they do art we are to technical when mixing. but this guys play around with sounds at the end the results are grammys.
Is this what Maxxbass and Renaissance Bass do? add and compress harmonics, high pass and deal with phase to have more presence in the mid low frequencies and make the sound bigger?
much much gratitude for this one! cool shit. playing with polarity button? is this because the parallel track is out of phase potentially? anyone know?
Tchad is a fucking LEGEND!!! I hope this puts to rest the BS "rule" about not working a sound in isolation. Of course at some point you need to make sure that it's sitting in the mix properly. Only an idiot would not do that.
how the fuck did he come up with this filtering + phase flip on the parallel shit? it can be psychoacoustic black magic, creating a phantom sub octave or just give this low mid presence in the mix that nothing else achieves. dude is just a mad genius.
He probably has a reamp box setup somewhere off camera to adjust the level. Depends on the pedal though. Certain ones are designed w/ more headroom to accept line levels. You can also just adjust the level of the send in your daw to -6db or so. Same diff. Cheers.
@@AmiliaCaraMia interesting. I see a lot of people running keyboards through guitar pedals, so they are likely running into the pedals with the keyboards output set at a lower volume to compensate for the mismatch impedance?
He‘s using the Bomb Factory plug-in in this clip that is part of the Pro Tools stock plug-ins. Also the Nembrini Sans-Amp plug-in that also has a ‚Mix‘ function for parallel use. If you use the hardware pedal or rackmount PSA-1 you need a reamp box. Radial has several models - all great. Personally I use two hardware PSA-1s but also the plug-ins. And of course it was all inspired by Tchad Blake. 😊

word. dude probably worked on more music in 2 months during the 90's than the haters have their entire lives.

right. he puts into his kicks what every other yt video tells people to take out. ppl should start using their ears again.
i didn't like it in the mix
but he might not either tomorrow
Maybe they just dont like the sound of the kick, Jesus Christ man lol
Brilliant... a true master at work!!! Love to hear him destroy a sound and drag it through the mud. Not afraid to get dirty!

LOL No one is ripping on him 😂
@@elgamerico how the fuck do you sound so sure when this comment section is full of insults about his voice ?
You must be thick as shit
Mixing is drawing. Back and forth, experimenting. Such a fun to do. Drawing with sonic textures. Peace
what a voice!!! he reminds me of Rorschach from watchmen with that look and voice....
This guy is in a whole other league in experimentation and originality... Totally blown away

Mix With The Masters thank you
I love the sans amp for fxs. I use to add color to my delays. Nice video.
What's the name of the band he mentions @ 00:43? I heard Lost Vobo's...with a record called Keego. But that's clearly not it :)
Los Lobos, Kiko

Where do you get the sansamp plugin?
It's a Pro Tools stock pluggin
There's also a VST emulation of the protools version called "softamp PSA-1"
@@NormSpupsEntertainmentis there a Mac version?
I bought a rack mounted sans amp when they came out too. God we’re old.
So he’s coming out of interface at line level and going into a guitar pedal? Impedance would be an issue yeah?

for one second i thought i saw T-Bag from Prison Break
its fun to watch these and pretend i know what they're doing.
is he going to get his original voice back or?
I knew I stole this trick from someone. Latin Playboys first record. I think that's where I directly lifted the idea from.
what song was that if i may ask? i would love to check it out! thanks :)
Can we just have a Tchab Blake biopic starring Billy Bob Thornton please?

people commenting on this have mic'd up a drum kit three times in their life then suddenly become an expert on 'kick drum tone'
Batman's mixes sound pretty lit.
That kick sounds fucking horrible, but in the mix, god damn!
That's why excessive solo'ing is a fool's errand.
Hella good advice!!! Ain't it tho!!!
That's what generally separates great mixers from everyone else.
I just clicked because I wanted to know how to pronounce Tchad.
MAKE MY DAY, JEW!
I AM THE BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!
whatcha lookin at, smoothskin

It sounded worst the more he tweaked it 😂

Immature babies always picking on TChad's voice
IMO he should be voicing characters in animated movies
