    Awesome! My brother and I know Tchad through a family member and we were fortunate to have lunch with him when he was touring with the Latin Playboys and came through Colorado. A few years later, he was nice enough to invite us to visit him at Sunset Studios in Hollywood. He gave us a tour and played some tracks for us that he was working on from the Pearl Jam album, "Binaural". My brother caught with him at NAMM earlier this year. Great guy with a really unique sound.

    It would be cool if you could feed the audio (from Pro sTools) directly to the video instead of going through the mic. Nice videos though. Thanks for taking the time.

    Fave engineer of all time. I love that in contrast with other's you've covered Rick, who find a holy grail and milk it forever… while Tchad has some trademarks (sansamp etc) he's constantly experimenting, there's so much variety. I enjoy most his work with female artists - Susan Vega and especially Sam Philips, but also from here in New Zealand Neil Finn / Crowded House. Fun fact: I believe had the same doctor as Mr Blake while in he was NZ. Just that one degree of separation… Thanks Rick for managing to explain what Tchad does better than he does himself - no easy feat!

      I worked quite bit with your fellow Kiwi Steve Kearney, who was friends with Tchad I believe. Had some nice studio stories. Love Tchad's work with all your above, and some interesting Japanese artists as well. One degree.

    The drums sound so clear,live and up front. Without dominating over the vocals and the rest of the instruments. Thats the hard part it seems like to get them all mixed right sounding proper and clear enough without dominating other parts unduely.

    Using distortion on instruments other than guitar used to happen naturally with old gear, now do it however you can....pedals, plugins, comps...distortion is life

    One of my favourite producers / mixers is Peter Katis. He doesn't necessarily produce metal or alt metal bands, it's usually indie-esk bands such as The National, The Twilight Sad, Interpol, Frightened Rabbit. I would love / hope to hear you dissect his wonderful production & mixing skills someday. Peace bro.

    I'm not sure if you are still into this stuff on your channel, but I'd love to hear you do a breakdown of Jon Brion. His drum sounds are absolutely incredible, much like Tchad Blake, but with this lucidity to them that I don't really hear anywhere else.

    Rick have you done Part 2 to this? If so can you add a link? THANKS! I also had an idea today to try this with guitar LIVE, not recording. Haven't tried it yet, but gonna split my guitar signal in two before the amp input, add a OD box and eq, and blend to taste. I have a scope so I can find a pedal that will flip the phase if need be... or build an inverting op-amp buffer box.

  • @nperaino
    @nperaino 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome and thanks for posting. Question...when you're flipping the phase for that great hollow sound...what track or bus are you flipping? Can describe in detail how this is happening? I ask because if you're just flipping phase on one source I wouldnt think you'd hear it. Is it a aux send or a series bus? thanks!

    • @RickBeato
      @RickBeato  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Put a SansAmp on a mono aux with an EQ after it. The Distortion will change the phase and flipping the phase on the EQ will change it again but not perfectly. If you high pass it, you will find places that will add a ton off bottom end. Play with it until it sounds great.

    rick, these videos are super insightful! thanks a lot! but the audio quality isnt really up there. it's hard to tell the subtle differences especially in the low end. cheers

    • @RickBeato
      @RickBeato  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      playboy1103 I can add the computer audio in but can't play the Tchad tracks because they will take it down. I think I need to have a separate rig to my right to track the output of the computer and my voice at the same time. The thing is the concepts. If you only got one thing of this video it would be easing hey sans amp on an ox track with an EQ following it. Flip the phase in the EQ and play with the high and low pass filter's. Also move the level of the send up-and-down and see how it changes the bottom end of the kick. Then do that with the Snare. This is a conceptual or technical video because you're going to be using different tracks than I am. I wanted to share the plug-ins that are used in the order of them along with how you would set them up in a session.

    Hi Rick, don't you think he might be addind distortion to the hi hat as well? And it seems he has something compressing the whole kit with an attack and release setting in the groove of the song. Are you sure all he uses is the ML4000? Thanks for the vid.

    tchad the mangler, I like that he warps the instruments into the mix, really opposite to a lot of producers. Distortion instead of reverb and compression, just do it - you will make a lot of money between 1995 -2015 ...and maybe beyond

    I wouldn't say the musician sounds great but it's definitely loud as hell. A lot of metal slamming on metal if that's your thing. Actually it sounds like one of those street player groups that bang on garbage cans and slam things around as percussion. Surprised they got a record contract but I guess they did.

    Way too much boxy mids for my taste. Love the drums on the black keys stuff though. Don't think that sound is Tchad's. Don't like the distortion he uses on drums sometimes. Unnatural. Using the noise floor as 'air' = yuck. The air in a nice room mic recording though. Yes please.

    • @RickBeato
      @RickBeato  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You know this how? Tchad's a great guy and super talented, but nobody I know knows who he is unless they are over 40 and in the music business. The recording world is minuscule that's why most engineers and producers are broke and out of work. Are you bugged because I worked on a project with Tchad? Look it up bro the band was Needtobreathe. He mixed a record called The Reckoning. We didn't use all the mixes because of an A&R decision but we worked on it for a month together. Do you know Tchad personally?

      How about you post of some videos of you in YOUR studio, speaking on real experiences you've had in the field with world class mixers/engineers over your long career? Oh wait, its because you cant because you haven't done anything. You wouldn't have the guts to even post one video of yourself in your studio trying to contribute anything of substance.
