LOVE your reactions to Eva Cassidy -- everything you say is right on. Her best two jazz tunes IMHO are Autumn Leaves and Stormy Monday, both live at the Blues Alley concert in 1996 (where she did Over the Rainbow). Her Chain of Fools is amazing. If you're going to do a deep dive, and I hope you do -- you won't regret it -- you should also hear her Songbird and You Take My Breath Away.
Maryland has more in common with Virginia and the South than with the North. She has been dead now for nearly 30 years. She played with D.C. musicians, but her tastes were so eclectic no big label would sign her. You. should check out her Blues Alley live concert--one of the few times her live performance was recorded. After her death she was "rediscovered" in England because, first, of "Over the Rainbow."
Great reaction. Hope you check out Eva and Chuck Brown's, ''You've Changed''. She has a solo of the song, but the duet with jazz/blues singer Chuck Brown is special.
Eva died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. A tragic loss of a huge musical talent that had so much more to offer the world. I think she became more famous after her death. The DJ Terry Wogan on his BBC show focussed attention to her music, and her appreciation of her talents spread to the USA. She does a wonderful version of the spiritual "Wayfarin' Stranger". The version with a jazz guitar and small group backing is really superb - more so than her completely solo version on which she alone backs herself on acoustic guitar. Bluesy and jazzy, and passionate - you should find it great. th-cam.com/video/4C1_oNzhU7U/w-d-xo.html
