I'm so glad you made this. I was homeless for a year in Australia, came from domestic violence and left at 18 because I couldn't handle it any more, I admit, i got lucky, someone gave me a chance and rented a place to me and I have since bettered my life, my plan was to travel around doing fruit picking if I couldn't get my self off the streets. It was a very hard year, the stigma on homeless people needs to stop. I have now gotten myself into university and i would love to take that to helping the homeless as I know very well the struggle of the streets. keep your head up guys.

Lesley Lima I do sympathise for those coming from a broken home, abuse etc nut not that much with the one drin king his bottle of water,Ike whatever his name is because he goes like "i had a job, didn't like it yap yap yap!"When i was younger, was a bit lazy at times, drinking too much, drugs and stuff and nearly found myself like he is but now i'm back on track, sober etc and am i happy to go to work everyday to be with people i don't really want to be,well sometimes no but i carry on,walk or die...Life's not suppose to be happiness all the time and even if that was,we would take it for granted and not enjoying the good times anymore,no?Hello from France :)

Lesley Lima I have been homeless in Australia, but it's not my home country, the one thing I found was that there was a lot of food help in Melbourne, but not in Perth.
I think it's awesome that you are now at uni, and that you have found your own strength and made a way. You are a survivor, and I respect that. One day you will be able to speak into the lives of people who need your particular expertise and it will come full circle.

Many years ago while on a hitch hiking trip I worked at a restaurant in Amsterdam. We were told to chase away homeless people when they turned up at the back door looking for leftovers.
I did it the first few evenings but one day decided not to damage the leftovers and made up a bag with food for a man who slept nearby. I started to take food from the fridge. He dropped by every evening and I gave him a grilled chicken and bread and sometimes a bottle of beer. After about 7 or 8 weeks he stopped coming.
I looked for him around town but never found out what happened to this old man

although i'm only watching this now 5 years later but the issue of homelessness is still very real. And sadly even more so now. thank you gordon for taking the time to create this and bring awareness. There are some good charities like youth without shelter out there that are trying to help the homeless, I implore people to give either their time or money this holiday for these good causes.

I was one of these people, and i can say for certain, you can get out this situation, but most will never try, even fewer will succeed, and even fewer still will flourish, i think the number for somebody like me was less than 5%. I am not lucky, and nobody helped me get out the situation i was in i did it myself, and am 15 years sober, and about to start a job that pays 100K+ a year, if they say they cant, what they mean is they wont. I can say that because i was one of them.

Excellent documentary, eye opening, and I enjoyed it. Your goal of the documentary is at 4:59 - to rid the stigma of homeless people and to understand their stories ... and lend a helping hand. This documentary tugged at all my heart strings and you'd have to be pretty cold not to feel for these people after hearing their stories. Now that I can reflect a bit, here is my view. It's 2019 and there's a new respite centre near my condo. There are needles on the ground near the school being built and I've seen more cops in the area and a lot more homelessness in my neighborhood. The respite centre has made for an increase in these needles as well as a lot more trash, bottles, and rags and people sleeping on the street. Unfortunately a lot of these people have a drug problem or mental illness - one of your interviewees says it himself and he's the most ground level we can get. Things are starting to happen in the community, making the home owners and rentals feel unsafe. To me, this is a systematic issue and the heavy lifting by our MPPs. I agree, we need to "lend a helping hand" but sadly it comes at the expense of something else, it seems...

Once upon a time, centuries ago, we didn't have streets, and homes were more basic. It was normal, it was how humans lived naturally.
My point is that discriminating against people that don't live in a conventional home or in a conventional way is wrong.
The fact that most homeless people have had rough pasts should make us want to help them, be sympathetic, and not judgmental.
    Homeless people are people too.
We were never made to live in boxes. Literal or metaphorical boxes.

Great documentary, especially for an amateur. I have always felt empathy for the homeless because so many people are there and not by choice. It is dysfunctional families that put them there. In my twenties when I had nothing, it was a loving family and the work ethic they gave me that helped me achieve my dreams in Canada. I only could not relate to those interviewed who mentioned they were homeless by choice because they wanted to travel, gave up material goods or did not like to work. Is this mental illness? Sincerely wish them well.

Great documentary! Amazing way to grasp what they've been through and that homeless people aren't just all "addicts". There's reasons why all this is going on.. I find that homeless people have such great stories and when I can I stop and speak to them. I live in Toronto so this was a great documentary to watch. When you have time, go for lunch with a homeless person and get to know them because you might just learn something about yourself.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for individuals suffering homelessness. Stories like these are too common. It's a shame. There has to be a special place in hell for anyone who abuses a homeless person! They don't deserve it. Any one of us could be in their position on the turn of a dime. One lost job, savings spent & your life unravels like a loose thread on a sweater.
1st your car is repossessed. Then utilities are cut off. Then the house goes into foreclosure. Then where? Exactly. You're on the streets.
There by the grace of God go I.

The key to helping the homeless is acceptance. Adam had some great advice..."Don't hurt yourself.. and if you don't hurt others even better" Words to live by. Thanks for this peek into life on the streets.

I’ve watched a few videos on the homeless crisis in the US recently and for many they are there due to other things other than drink or drugs. Many have been forced on the streets due to high living costs and not being able to afford the rent. Many are working, but living in tents, RV’s or cars. That just doesn’t seem right and govt’s need to do more for people like this. They’re not all drug addicts looking for something for nothing. I hope these people are given the hand up they desperately need. London, UK

SAID @6:10... I sympathize with both you and your family... I've been in your mother's situation... and well, I handled it much differently. But the way you were treated by your family was inexcusable. Break away and I think you could be very successful - you appear to be a very kind and thoughtful young person :-) There are many of us out here who are more than happy to help you move on and succeed so that you can become your own successful individual :-) (And while none of us ever become 'rich'... we should measure our success in how many friends we have, not in how much $ pours in.... )
Best of luck Said.... take care...

I worked with the homeless for five years in one of the UK's biggest cities and 9 out of ten were on the streets because of either poor mental health , substance abuse, familial abuse or abandonment, coming out of foster care or having parents with serious issues themselves. After my experiences and after working on a project that specialised in getting long term homeless off the streets, i firmly believe that it is only possible if they are given lifetime care and support, not just a quick, year or two intervention. Everything can go great and then they relapse after two years off the streets and its then a quick route back to homelessness. Finally, DO NOT give them cash on the streets, give food or clothing, cash nearly always goes on alcohol or drugs, which exacerbates all of their problems

You can make a difference in helping these young people. Finding people who can understand their sitiation and give them a chance to work . I know they are willing to change their life. To trust them and believe on them.

I have a message for everyone . I live in Toronto. The message is don't give up because when you give up the future is even worse for you . But if you don't give up you will be glad that you didn't. I gave up when I was younger now I am 27 and a failure . If I never gave up when I was younger I would be highly successful right now :) .

Reviewing as an 8th grade teacher. Great documentary that can really connect students to this issue. Quick warning just that there is some cursing, "f-word" at least 20 times causally same with "shit". Still worth it if you have a class or a school that can handle that.

I found out that having good friends among your family and friends can be one of the most important things in life, more important than having a lot of money. Without these friends life can seem worthless and you can feel terrible about yourself.
