- Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over. A very emotional last song from their farewell tour. So sad, Paul Hester is in tears. One of the best songs ever written. Thought I'd upload a decent quality version because the other videos on here don't do the song or the performance justice. Go and buy the DVD folks, you won't regret it! Recorded November 24th 1996

My dad, the most stable person in my life and my best friend, died yesterday in corona. He was by himself in the hospital. I could not say goodbye to him. Listening to this song and crying, how can I live without him...
That's heartbreaking, I'm so sorry for your loss :( All the love to you
all the love of you . sorry for da loss
I`m very sorry for your loss Melanie. I have been through it too, so I know the pain that you are in right now. I know that it may not help right now, but always remember.....I`m sure that your Dad knew how much he was loved when he left this earth. My blessings and prayers go out to you Melanie.
It's a crime to separate you like that. Don't let THEM win.
I am so sorry for your loss. My family lives in Corona and I will be traveling there for Thanksgiving dinner, regardless of those idiotic lockdowns. We always have a circle of prayer before our meal. I will say a prayer for y’all. Please be strong. Peace and Love.

Having Chronic Depression and I can tell you I wish it on no one but hope that all of you who may or may not be fighting to know we are all in this together. Talk to friends or family don’t try to fight it alone. Stay safe and stay strong.

My husband of 43 years died 3 months ago and I feel like a crushing weight is sitting on my chest waiting for my heart to finish breaking. Music is a balm to my soul.
Deepest condolences 🙏 ❤ from New Zealand
He liked all kinds of different music. Some songs just hit and bring back memories.
Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Indeed music is a balm. Take care.
I lost my wife of 32 years on June 7. We loved this song
Sending you lots of love and a huge hug.
Really love how many people come back to this song. There's something fundamental about it.
Close my eyes. Its 1984 again. Still listing to it 40 years later.
Amazing song
I was a freshman in 1984. Great years to be a teenager I was right in the middle of it
My ex-wife just passed away Monday September 24 2018
She was only 52 years. She was the light in any function,we were good friends until the end. She loveed this song so very very
much!
Very sorry to hear this news. Sincere condolences.
May her memory be as a Blessing.....
listened to this song and cried reading this. I hope you're doing well.
Thank you all, now all I try to remember are the good and happy time we shared together and when I look at my beautiful daughter we had I just smile!
Ian sorry for your loss hurts
This song takes my breath away. since I was 18 years old, when I heard it for the first time, it marked my life. Today, over 50 years old, I still suffer from it...
The world got darker when we lost Paul Hester. Sparkly on the outside and battling demons within. RIP Paul
Truth. My heart aches for him every time I see this video. I am sad that these are demons that he could not overcome, but rejoice that he he could join us for the part of the journey of life that he could bear and share with us.
Listening in August of 2024 and crying my eyes out! Don't know why, maybe cause the debate and the struggle with the wall and all. Life is a miracle no matter what side your on. Togetherness brings me to tears! I love seeing it!
I have listened more this song in the last 3 months than I did since the song was written and I do not know why but it brings me to tears
It completely speaks to the human condition!
This performance was close to 30 years ago. My oh my, how time and life do fly so quickly by!
Paul cried through the whole song. It was the end. He never recovered. RIP sweet soul. This song was for you.
Why is he cryng?
Breaks my heart every time i watch it. He was already crying before the song starts. His eyes are noticeably swollen. He looks completely crushed. They all look sad, but Paul really looks crushed.
I've always wondered the extent of the impact this had on his depression and subsequent death years later.
Neil's voice is so effortlessly amazing. Everything about it, his tone, control and pitch, just so good.
100 percent agree
This song was popular when I was a teenage girl vacationing in Florida with my parents. I fell hardcore for a local boy. Surfer... Shoulder length sun bleached hair, deep sun tanned skin tinged with a hint of red, lips that tasted like Carmex and skin that had the most intoxicating scent of salt water and Coppertone sun tan oil. It was very much like every coming of age movie that had ever been filmed on the beach. It was also the hardest "goodbye" of my life at the time. We spent 10 fun filled, magical days just hanging out at the arcades playing pinball, swimming in the ocean, floating for what seemed like hours on his surf board and stealing kisses whenever we wanted. I can still close my eyes and smell the ocean, feel the heat of the afternoon sun on my skin, hear the intensely loud sounds of people laughing and carrying on without a care in the world. Then just like that, it ended as quickly as it had begun. I can picture that goodbye as if it happened just yesterday. I could feel the breeze on my face as I closed my eyes and he kissed my forehead, my cheeks, my lips. My parents, so understanding and patient, sat waiting in our car in the hotel parking lot. I only looked back once after I walked away from him. I left him standing with tears in his eyes on that beach. My own tears fell as I stopped at the top of the wooden staircase that gave access to the beach, turned that one last time and waved goodbye. As my parents drove us away from the beach over that beautiful bridge that leads to and from Daytona, I knew I would never see him again. For me, this song is a sweet reminder of how innocent and equally brutal teenage crushes can be. But it IS a wonderful memory of young love found and lost. I can only hope that if he ever reminisces about that summer, he smiles and thinks of me fondly.
omg I cried.
Wow...pretty powerful. Do you remember his name? I bet he could easily be found via social media. Take a chance, why not?
When u lovend someone u cant ever replaced that had been hallowed by someone..

Wow wow wow oh my God oh my God and you wrote it so well relive it every day
Wow, that moved me
Paul Hester....miss you bro😞
He looks sad huh?
A very emotional performance from the band and brilliant lead vocals from Neil as always. Each time Paul the drummer cries it gets me deep down, especially as he took his own life a few years later and he had two young daughters. I can't begin to imagine what losing a dad as a kid would feel like. Such a troubled soul, suffered with depression for many years but his fans loved him to pieces and his legacy lives on. We still love you Paul. RIP brother! ❤
Edit: wow didn't expect so many likes for this comment. Thanks guys. Hessie will always be in his fan's hearts and I know he's watching over his family everyday ❤ this live performance always moves me xx
If you pause the video at 4:30, you'll see Paul with his angelic smile....so beautiful!
A timeless song that holds more meaning as the days and months roll by.
RIP Paul Hester, always get chills when he pops up in this video
I keep repeating and repeating that moment. So magic
R. I. P. Paul Hester. And thank you for being a part of so many great memories.
This song is such a bittersweet memory for me. The song is just beautiful. I danced in my momma's kitchen to this song in 1987 with my then girlfriend who later became my wife. Sadly we broke up and it was a bitter end. But I wouldn't trade that dance with her back when we were so in love for anything. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
The past is yesterday, the future is tomorrow, enjoy the “present” bc its a “gift”
Sorry about the divorce
I've got chronic depression. I lived the best of life when this song was released, the year after I started to have episodes.
Melancholia and nostalgia in a deep sense. This is what this wonderful song brings. The time I was really alive. I believed my life would be full of achievements. I sense this in the song, the sounds.
Now I can function, work and earn a living. But things were never the same. Today I slept all day cause I had not to go working. I found no reason to stand and live my day as it happens every weekend. I am beat.
The dream is over after fighting decades. 💔
But the song refreshes my soul. It is something notably amazing. The way it touches within is pure magic. 🙂
Same. Hey.
It's not over until it's *over*
@@mattgilbert7347 yeah, let's see if life can surprise me yet.
@@brunnowolf8151 Thanks mate
This song is truly beautiful. There are hardly any songs these days with worthwhile lyrics that MEAN something! Feel the walls between us; we know that they won't win! Love, Light, and Peace to all here! xx
Very symbolic of those who try to interfear with a loving relationship, sanity, lies about our nature, and anything to try to pull us apart.
This also gives hope to our Queens in our life that we should sacrifice every fiber of our being to make the safe, happy, and feel loved at every moment. And when the hard times come, let us be anchor`s in their lives until we build them up and make them feel loved and cherished again.
I keep coming back to this video again, over and over... there will be a gap and I'll remember and come back and it's the same set of emotions each and every time.
Put simply, this is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Lyrically. Musically. Emotionally.
While we are all mortal people, and we cannot last forever, some things are too beautiful to not. This song is one of those things...
Don't dream, it's over... don't dream it's over... two ways to hear the same words, meaning two entirely different things.
What I love in particular about this video is that when the song ends, they partially open it up, get the crowd singing it, and then end it again.
You can feel the energy pass from the band to the crowd...
It's as if Neil and Crowded House are "giving" this song to the world. It is an acknowledgment that they know they won't be here forever... but that the powerful, sublime song will live forever.
Who are you writing this to? Are you really this lonely?
Well... not to trolls, at least...
Great takeaway from the lyrics. Amazing how music can express the same feelings, in different languages, from people all around the world. Greetings from São Paulo
As a youngster just moved to NYC I saw Crowded House LIVE in early Spring 1987 with a group of friends at The Bottom Line in The Village in NYC. It was toward then end of Crowded House first live American tour. This tune was climbing the music charts in the USA at the time. When Crowded House performed this tune the place went wild. EVERYONE knew the lyrics and the sing-along was AMAZING!! Just like then, the spirit of this tune lives on STRONG today! Thank you Neil Finn for introducing the World to your musical brilliance!
Most Amazing show I ever attended in my 63 years... So Far. RIP Paul ❤😢
This song was one of my daddy’s favorite... he died two days ago... I listen to this song and I remember my dad, when this song came out to the radio he put up the volume. This song take me back to that time. Music is a time machine, no doubt about it.
Yaya Cortes I’m so sorry to hear that. God bless. The music is really great. Sorry for your loss, again

Yaya Cortes Ok cool, I’m from Minnesota
One of the best beautiful pop ballads of the all times
+edgardo gregorini I'd even say one of the best songs ever written. (But that's just my opinion)
+COSMOB3AR - Pop is precisely what their music was/is. Just because it wasn't in the Top 40 doesn't mean that it wasn't Pop. Nothing alternative rock about them whatsoever. Did you also think The Smiths/Morrissey were alternative rock?
Hello guy, regarding comments; I meant "a great pop song", because at the time this type of music was considered so. maybe pop a few years ago was of such quality that today it is not generally recognized in this way. "Alternative Rock" is rawer, style is associated with more powerful voice distorted guitars, and rather "noise" in some cases. However, there are several songs from the same group who go by that line, but do not think "don`t dream it`s over" is the example in this case. Regards!
Morrissey & The Smiths have alternative rock songs
+edgardo gregorini Today pretty much anything that is guitar based or has the traditional rock four piece but isn't rock in the classic sense is called Alternative or Indie. However, this is pop at it's best. I will always think of the Smiths as a pop band, because at the time they were light years ahead of contemporary "rock."
Why can't music be like this anymore
Great song. If you think this a love song, then YOU MISSED THE GIST. Its a UNITY song and coming together as a humanity song....
I couldn't agree with you more.
There's someone in the comments who has forgotten about that, supporting an individual who tears people apart.
No phones, just good people enjoying great music
john Sturges Yeah notice that? Phones are such a distraction now. Even parent seem to care about playing games or texting istead of enjoying life with their kids. Such a shame.

Why am I in floods of tears right now? Because I’m watching Paul Hester hugging his brothers as the crowd applauds them and he’s smiling. He looks so happy and it just breaks my heart.
So incredibly sad what depression can do. He looked so happy here and unfortunately it caught up with him. RIP Paul!
He definitely was a sweetheart,
Missed dearly. Possibly he could not deal with heartbreak, in his life, we do not know, but we do know he was precious! tears when I think of Him.
I've loved this song since it was first released. I'm also thrilled to hear them sing the original song that most of us love... and not change a verse, the beat of the drums.
I started playing guitar, way b4 this song came out...and I love it...but it took me 3 months to learn the opening chords..duh.. Freedom within and Freedom without....

There are lots and lots of beautifully written songs. Step out of your cave.
I watch this video often. My wife introduced me to Crowded House over 30 years ago and we're still together to this day and we both love them still. I cannot imagine being with anyone else ever.
That is beautiful! With me it is all the contrary, my husband and I are no longer together, but I always remember him with this song, because I met him when I fell in love with this song in the 80s.
I sent a message to your wife!
It's nostalgic song...Thanks for the nice lyrics... RIP sir Paul
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof is my favorite lyric ever.
I try to live up to it.
I love how the crowd is solely focused on the singer instead of how people now days are distracted trying to capture the moment with their phones.
+007Kimme well this was in 1996
exactly
+Brooke Nyman That's exactly his point
+007Kimme ehhh its not what it seems. People hold their phones up, not looking at the screen, they look at the singer. Its like lighters back in the day, did anyone complain everyone was looking at their lighters at a van halen concert? NO they are just holding something.
What a song.
i think this song was created by Neil and Crowded House over the day-to-day break-up of a girlfriend but 40 years later, the song, in my humble opinion, now, represents a break up of sorts for all of us 1980's lovers the door to our glory years and how lucky we were to live in a time of such cool and thoughtful music, they 80's were special and shall always stick out - God Bless all of us who lived it - peace out
unfortunately, I didn't. But I'm in love with this song ! what do you advise me to listen ?
how about Biggee Small/Led Zeppelin mash up..?

Still so emotional in 2019.
So sad. I'm wrapping up very emotional tumultuous 26 year marriage. This song keeps playing in my head, like as soon as I wake up at 6am.....😭😭😭😭
Music touches our very soul and plays on all of our emotions good and bad. Stay strong and I'm sure you will come out stronger.
ohh dear...I am so sorry..
Sorry about your marriage. Good luck with everything.
Maryann, this song and others helped me thru my last breakup. You tumultuous-mine was the worst emotional roller coaster ever. Sometimes love is not enough to see a relationship thru.It needs commitment and trust,it means bringing something to the table. And Jesus sure knew what he was saying when he said," With man some things are possible, but with GOD all things are possible." The best relationship ever.

… There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
But there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win
… Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now)
Hey now, hey now
Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win (They come, they come)
Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now), yeah
Hey now, hey now

Best part? Nobody had a phone! Everyone enjoyed the performance, in that very moment. One of my favourite songs ever.
Absolutely !
This was 1996
That’s because this was 1996 bruh
I didn't in the day
I'm a 70's boy
I don't care to ask questions, like: "Who is still listening in whatever year it is?!"
Because great songs that cause you to feel and/or think will always have someone listening.
"Don't Dream It's Over" is a great song. So, listeners, please continue to think and feel. Peace!
Went to see them in Cardiff Castle, Wales a few weeks ago. I had forgotten just how good they were.
Saw them in St. Augustine Florida end of August. Wonderful. And his sons are so very talented.
Watching this now, feeling nostalgic, and wishing I could time travel. I never get tired of this perfect song.
Me too,love it from SA🇿🇦
Not sure why, but this song popped in my head today so had to look it up. Makes me wish I was a kid in the 80s again.
@@isaacdikgale1903 c'est perfection, le chant
KeeFHQVideos I have to agree this song is a) one of, if not THE BEST song ever written and b) seeing Paul drumming while tears moisten his eyes is one of the most moving moments in a "farewell" performance! The group bow at the end is so classy, it brought tears to my eyes, too! THANKS SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS FOR US!
Their last concert and watch Paul Hester he knows it’s over rip mate you are a champion
Rob Whiteley He was something else. A beautiful soul too. Met them in 1989 after their Ventura show.
Awesome mate still brings a tear to the eye
Still in the year of our lord 2023 One of the greatest songs of all time! Terribly sad when your meant to feel on top of the world & have a massive audience around the world who loves you! but still feel lost and alone. This song and Drummer will never die!
"Our Lord" LOL.. Lords are for suckers.
Nick Finn and the Crowd House great band from Australia 🇦🇺
Never knew they from Australia
@@leoniea138 Crowded House is a band from Australia 🇦🇺. The Finn brothers are from New Zealand but migrated to Australia. Prior to forming the Crowded House band, they form a rock namely Sprindect earlier. FYI
@@trevormwabulabrookings and the band the finn brothers were in was splitenz
Actually from New Zealand but yes great band
Split Enz was EPIC too, love Neil Finn !
This was the last performance with the band of the late Paul Hester. May he rest in peace !
He seemed to be struggling a bit at the beginning but still persistent and pouring his heart into a great timeless masterpiece, all the same interesting because it shows the human side of a rock star.
Actually, pretty depressing watching this.
Take me back to the time of real music!
Paul Hester. A great drummer who suffered by Depression. He choose a tree..
I will always hsve him in my heart.
Its hard to live with Depression.
Very hard...
Chlarie Peace unfortunately none of those things matter sometimes....
