This song takes my breath away. since I was 18 years old, when I heard it for the first time, it marked my life. Today, over 50 years old, I still suffer from it...
Listening in August of 2024 and crying my eyes out! Don't know why, maybe cause the debate and the struggle with the wall and all. Life is a miracle no matter what side your on. Togetherness brings me to tears! I love seeing it!
I’ve got friends who finished high school and flew to Sydney for this concert straight after graduation, they were such die hard fans that they were in the first few rows and you can see them in various songs in this concert as the camera pans to the audience, immortalised in video, and forever young. After 27 years sometimes you just go through life with questions, and memories…
Good memories from a decade when life seemed much better than it is today, and the music was an integral part of what made those times as great as they were.
+Mike Hawk It's as Meatloaf vamped at the end of Paradise by the Dashboard Light: "It was long ago, and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today". :-(
Truth. My heart aches for him every time I see this video. I am sad that these are demons that he could not overcome, but rejoice that he he could join us for the part of the journey of life that he could bear and share with us.
I am still listening in 2024. I went to their concert in Brighton, 🇬🇧 It was 4 June 94'. It was lashing it down with huge waves. I felt bad for them as it was our summer. They made huge fun of it and it was such a fantastic concert. I had my advanced maths the next day. I didn't care. I was having a blast. I passed! I put down to Crowded House that I loved before double digits. 😁❤️🙏🏻
2:52 Brother breaks my heart seeing the pain behind your eyes and knowing you’re gone and never got the help you deserved. I`m very sorry for your loss Melanie. I have been through it too, so I know the pain that you are in right now. I know that it may not help right now, but always remember.....I`m sure that your Dad knew how much he was loved when he left this earth. My blessings and prayers go out to you Melanie.
I am so sorry for your loss. My family lives in Corona and I will be traveling there for Thanksgiving dinner, regardless of those idiotic lockdowns. We always have a circle of prayer before our meal. I will say a prayer for y’all. Please be strong. Peace and Love.
RIP, Paul Hester. The sadness is noticeable even at the onset of this song ... you're hopefully at peace now, mate, and I'm glad your friends all hugged you at the end of the show. A great song from a talented band.
This song was one of my daddy’s favorite... he died two days ago... I listen to this song and I remember my dad, when this song came out to the radio he put up the volume. This song take me back to that time. Music is a time machine, no doubt about it.
I've got chronic depression. I lived the best of life when this song was released, the year after I started to have episodes. Melancholia and nostalgia in a deep sense. This is what this wonderful song brings. The time I was really alive. I believed my life would be full of achievements. I sense this in the song, the sounds. Now I can function, work and earn a living. But things were never the same. Today I slept all day cause I had not to go working. As a youngster just moved to NYC I saw Crowded House LIVE in early Spring 1987 with a group of friends at The Bottom Line in The Village in NYC. It was toward then end of Crowded House first live American tour. This tune was climbing the music charts in the USA at the time. When Crowded House performed this tune the place went wild. EVERYONE knew the lyrics and the sing-along was AMAZING!! Just like then, the spirit of this tune lives on STRONG today! Thank you Neil Finn for introducing the World to your musical brilliance!
Somewhere in that crowd was me. I was in Australia on my own aged 19, and this was not to be missed. I am now living Australia and this band are just musics icons in this corner of the South Pacific. 26th March 2005 we lost Paul. Time really is flying. RIP Paul Hester.
I watch this video often. My wife introduced me to Crowded House over 30 years ago and we're still together to this day and we both love them still. I cannot imagine being with anyone else ever.
That is beautiful! With me it is all the contrary, my husband and I are no longer together, but I always remember him with this song, because I met him when I fell in love with this song in the 80s.
This song is truly beautiful. There are hardly any songs these days with worthwhile lyrics that MEAN something! Feel the walls between us; we know that they won't win! Love, Light, and Peace to all here! xx
This also gives hope to our Queens in our life that we should sacrifice every fiber of our being to make the safe, happy, and feel loved at every moment. And when the hard times come, let us be anchor`s in their lives until we build them up and make them feel loved and cherished again.

Breaks my heart every time i watch it. He was already crying before the song starts. His eyes are noticeably swollen. He looks completely crushed. They all look sad, but Paul really looks crushed. I've always wondered the extent of the impact this had on his depression and subsequent death years later.
I never get tired of watching Aussies/New Zealanders rock out live to this Crowded House masterpiece - truly one of the greatest all-time pop songs ever !!!
A very emotional performance from the band and brilliant lead vocals from Neil as always. Each time Paul the drummer cries it gets me deep down, especially as he took his own life a few years later and he had two young daughters. I can't begin to imagine what losing a dad as a kid would feel like. Such a troubled soul, suffered with depression for many years but his fans loved him to pieces and his legacy lives on. We still love you Paul. RIP brother! ❤ Edit: wow didn't expect so many likes for this comment. Thanks guys. Hessie will always be in his fan's hearts and I know he's watching over his family everyday ❤ this live performance always moves me xx
This song is such a bittersweet memory for me. The song is just beautiful. I danced in my momma's kitchen to this song in 1987 with my then girlfriend who later became my wife. Sadly we broke up and it was a bitter end. But I wouldn't trade that dance with her back when we were so in love for anything. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
Wow, this brings back so many wonderful memories, and also some sadness. I wish I could go back in time and tell my friend David (who unexpectedly passed away) that he made the world a better place. He loved this song.
I keep coming back to this video again, over and over... there will be a gap and I'll remember and come back and it's the same set of emotions each and every time. Put simply, this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Lyrically. Musically. Emotionally. While we are all mortal people, and we cannot last forever, some things are too beautiful to not. This song is one of those things... Don't dream, it's over... don't dream it's over... two ways to hear the same words, meaning two entirely different things. What I love in particular about this video is that when the song ends, they partially open it up, get the crowd singing it, and then end it again. You can feel the energy pass from the band to the crowd... It's as if Neil and Crowded House are "giving" this song to the world. It is an acknowledgment that they know they won't be here forever... but that the powerful, sublime song will live forever.
Great takeaway from the lyrics. Amazing how music can express the same feelings, in different languages, from people all around the world. Greetings from São Paulo
This brings tears to my eyes, and l find myself having to hear this song it gets me through all this hatred and killing, and yes it's a battle ahead, but.... DON'T LET THEM WIN!!!!!!
That iconic shot of Hessy at 4.28 and the little head tilt and smile through the tears - whenever I hear his name, that is the picture I see in my minds eye. RIP Paul Hester, a truly loveable Aussie larrikin :(
Music was about music long before MTV showed up in 1981. MTV was about using video images to sell music. This little group from down under has certainly provided the world with a handful of great songs...
john Sturges Yeah notice that? Phones are such a distraction now. Even parent seem to care about playing games or texting istead of enjoying life with their kids. Such a shame.
The song should be a universal anthem , I know he had a big encouragement on me when I was going through down time... in the song is permanently in the top 10 list of my favorites
Why am I in floods of tears right now? Because I’m watching Paul Hester hugging his brothers as the crowd applauds them and he’s smiling. He looks so happy and it just breaks my heart.
He definitely was a sweetheart, Missed dearly. Possibly he could not deal with heartbreak, in his life, we do not know, but we do know he was precious! tears when I think of Him.
Was 8 yrs old in '86 when this song came out. Even at that young age something about this song latched on to my psyche and has never left. One of the most beautiful emotional songs EVER.
when i heard this song for the first time...we had just move from canada to paraguay (south america) and we lived on a ranch in a very remote area: no phone, no radio or tv (1970's). We depended on tape recorders (for music in the 80´s). Many years later and having forgoten this song, i stumbled on this song again: it was so heat warming and nostalgic ... its such a great song. It brings back to many memories!
2019 and I'm listening to this song and my mind went back to mid 80's my days in high school, the song sounds really good, his voice sound just like it did back then, thank you guys.
I've loved this song since it was first released. I'm also thrilled to hear them sing the original song that most of us love... and not change a verse, the beat of the drums.
I started playing guitar, way b4 this song came out...and I love it...but it took me 3 months to learn the opening chords..duh.. Freedom within and Freedom without....
This song for Australia & New Zealand separated before. Crowded House must move to New Zealand from Austalia. This song so sad.... they come they come... who is them? Who is separated New Zealand from Australia🥺 like Timor Leste separated from Indonesia🥺😭😭😭

Still in the year of our lord 2023 One of the greatest songs of all time! Terribly sad when your meant to feel on top of the world & have a massive audience around the world who loves you! but still feel lost and alone. This song and Drummer will never die!
I was there! Front row! Concert was cancelled Saturday, the day before due to bad weather, till Sunday. It was worth the wait! As I will never forget it. And sadly the last time I saw Paul Hester play live. What a concert it was!
Cell phones from then were about the size of a brick...Motorola had probably just introduced one of the first flip phones.. but only the mouthpiece would fold out...and the phones had antennas the size of a drum stick..(not the chicken kind either)....
Often the internet taketh away but man...sometime it giveth. I completely stumbled into this vid and it my day. One of the 80s best pop tracks and one great live version of it. Cheers.
Cadê os brasileiros de bom gosto em . Quando cheguei aqui em 86 esse sucesso estava em todos as boate da cidade como curte isso aí . até hoje curtindo essa maravilha de música . será que tem algum brasileiro pra curtir até hoje ...
+COSMOB3AR - Pop is precisely what their music was/is. Just because it wasn't in the Top 40 doesn't mean that it wasn't Pop. Nothing alternative rock about them whatsoever. Did you also think The Smiths/Morrissey were alternative rock?
Hello guy, regarding comments; I meant "a great pop song", because at the time this type of music was considered so. maybe pop a few years ago was of such quality that today it is not generally recognized in this way. "Alternative Rock" is rawer, style is associated with more powerful voice distorted guitars, and rather "noise" in some cases. However, there are several songs from the same group who go by that line, but do not think "don`t dream it`s over" is the example in this case. Regards!
+edgardo gregorini Today pretty much anything that is guitar based or has the traditional rock four piece but isn't rock in the classic sense is called Alternative or Indie. However, this is pop at it's best. I will always think of the Smiths as a pop band, because at the time they were light years ahead of contemporary "rock."
This song brings me so much comfort. It just takes me back to simpler times, my childhood. I love it so, so much. I always have. Such a sweet melody. The guitar. Everything.
In case anyone was wondering, this concert was on November 24th, 1996, called the "Farewell to the World". This was the last song they played, which is why the drummer, Paul Hester, was a little tearful at 2:53. In 2005, Paul committed suicide from depression - Crowded House went on to start the band back up in 2006. So this was Paul's last song he ever played with them.. RIP.
+Top10Archive Oh, how horrible!! So very, very sad to hear. Poor Paul; wish he'd have gotten some help (or maybe better help). How ironic, also, they're sing "Don't Dream It's Over" (one of my favorite songs) - a song of hope and encouragement. Depression is a HORRIBLE, painful disease, and is still greatly misunderstood and disrespected to this very day. :-(
There is freedom within There is freedom without Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup There's a battle ahead Many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're travelling with me … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win … Now I'm towing my car There's a hole in the roof My possessions are causing me suspicion But there's no proof In the paper today Tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the TV page … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win … Now I'm walking again To the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead Barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and release … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us You know they won't win … Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now) Hey now, hey now Hey now, hey now Don't let them win (They come, they come) Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now), yeah Hey now, hey now
KeeFHQVideos I have to agree this song is a) one of, if not THE BEST song ever written and b) seeing Paul drumming while tears moisten his eyes is one of the most moving moments in a "farewell" performance! The group bow at the end is so classy, it brought tears to my eyes, too! THANKS SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS FOR US!

We still love you Paul. RIP brother! ❤
Edit: wow didn't expect so many likes for this comment. Thanks guys. Hessie will always be in his fan's hearts and I know he's watching over his family everyday ❤ this live performance always moves me xx
If you pause the video at 4:30, you'll see Paul with his angelic smile....so beautiful!
You know a song is truly a classic when those lyrics mean more today than when they were originally written.
Nina Lee It's because now we have the Mexican Wall and illegal immigrants.
@@hankbridges5055 I fail to understand what illegal immigrants have to do with classic songs. Please enlighten me.
One of the most beautifully written songs. So simplistic and touching...
😎👍
There are lots and lots of beautifully written songs. Step out of your cave.
One of the best performances of all time . Not many bands would get a send off like that .
The past is yesterday, the future is tomorrow, enjoy the “present” bc its a “gift”
Sorry about the divorce
There will never be a better Decade than the 80s! GenX rules 🤟🏽
Too bad you missed the 70's, it's what made the 80's what it was.
Who are you writing this to? Are you really this lonely?
Well... not to trolls, at least...
I am listening to this song again. This song is magical. Never get bored of listening this again and again.
That iconic shot of Hessy at 4.28 and the little head tilt and smile through the tears - whenever I hear his name, that is the picture I see in my minds eye. RIP Paul Hester, a truly loveable Aussie larrikin :(
I love that song in the 80's. It brings back memories. Thanks
When MTV was about music, and music was about music. People cared about the lyrics, melody, telling a story about life. Beautiful.
Music was about music long before MTV showed up in 1981. MTV was about using video images to sell music.
This little group from down under has certainly provided the world with a handful of great songs...
Great song. If you think this a love song, then YOU MISSED THE GIST. Its a UNITY song and coming together as a humanity song....
I couldn't agree with you more.
There's someone in the comments who has forgotten about that, supporting an individual who tears people apart.
No phones, just good people enjoying great music
john Sturges Yeah notice that? Phones are such a distraction now. Even parent seem to care about playing games or texting istead of enjoying life with their kids. Such a shame.
The song should be a universal anthem , I know he had a big encouragement on me when I was going through down time... in the song is permanently in the top 10 list of my favorites
This is the best, absolute best performance of all time. Don't dream it's over
Why am I in floods of tears right now? Because I’m watching Paul Hester hugging his brothers as the crowd applauds them and he’s smiling. He looks so happy and it just breaks my heart.
So incredibly sad what depression can do. He looked so happy here and unfortunately it caught up with him. RIP Paul!
He definitely was a sweetheart,
Missed dearly. Possibly he could not deal with heartbreak, in his life, we do not know, but we do know he was precious! tears when I think of Him.
One of the most beautiful song ever!
I was a metal head in the days of this songs release, but it has always been a part of my high school memories. Love it still
I'm 45 now. I was just a boy when I first heard this song in 6th grade if I'm not mistaken. It's one of my all time favorites.
THIS is why TH-cam is one of my favourite sites.
Don't dream the time it's over....in meddle of war in 2022.....we continue listen this amazing music😢😢
i understand , i agree , but it helps to distress , Dream some day the way will be over in Ukraine
This song for Australia & New Zealand separated before. Crowded House must move to New Zealand from Austalia. This song so sad.... they come they come... who is them? Who is separated New Zealand from Australia🥺 like Timor Leste separated from Indonesia🥺😭😭😭
Hello, quien está deprimido ? Siempre este tema me ha marcado mi adolescencia 😍♥️amo este tema y la voz del cantante.!! Es un temazoo.!!! Romántico para bailar lento....!! Hey now...
@@joshioaz85 Hey now
Put it on loop and never turn it off. Sad to know that one of these musicians is no longer with us.
And sadly usually the drummer
No one makes good music like this anymore
Still in the year of our lord 2023 One of the greatest songs of all time! Terribly sad when your meant to feel on top of the world & have a massive audience around the world who loves you! but still feel lost and alone. This song and Drummer will never die!
"Our Lord" LOL.. Lords are for suckers.
Still listening to this beautiful song March 3, 2023
same same
Me too
Timeless. From long long ago in a land far, far away. Just a beautiful song.
This is heart breaking. To know that the drummer ended his own life soon after this final performance.
Nine years later, 2005. This concert was 1996.
Watching this now, feeling nostalgic, and wishing I could time travel. I never get tired of this perfect song.
Me too,love it from SA🇿🇦
Not sure why, but this song popped in my head today so had to look it up. Makes me wish I was a kid in the 80s again.
@@isaacdikgale1903 c'est perfection, le chant
I was there! Front row! Concert was cancelled Saturday, the day before due to bad weather, till Sunday. It was worth the wait! As I will never forget it. And sadly the last time I saw Paul Hester play live. What a concert it was!
2nd best part of this Concert. NO CELL PHONES!! people enjoying the moment.and the Music!
agree!
It was 1996.... No cell phones with cameras so...
+Calen Sansom lol right
Cell phones from then were about the size of a brick...Motorola had probably just introduced one of the first flip phones.. but only the mouthpiece would fold out...and the phones had antennas the size of a drum stick..(not the chicken kind either)....
I think my old Motorola flip phone is in a drawer at my parents house still lol
I had the pleasure of seeing these guys live in concert.
Evil never wins. It only takes souls. Thats so sad. Never let Evil win because in the end it never does. Keep your Faith in God. 😔🙏💙❤️✝️
Seeing Paul Hester in tears here brings tears to my eyes. RIP brother from one musician to another . RIP Paul Hester
Often the internet taketh away but man...sometime it giveth. I completely stumbled into this vid and it my day. One of the 80s best pop tracks and one great live version of it. Cheers.
All this great music rediscovered during quarantine in 2020 !
What A Brilliant Audience Singing Along To This Timeless Song 🎵

Oh Yeah 1996! Nobody holding their stupid cellphone recording this, just enjoying the moment. Jesus, life was so much better!
We are lucky to remember what it was like, aren’t we?
@@geminikb Yes Definitely! Sure miss those days!
Yeah no stupid people playing games or social media just enjoyijg the moment holy cow life was alot better without games and internet
Love the opening of this song. That bass is very distinctive. Classic song with a great hook....
The band knew this would be the last time they played this song together, the song that gave them so much. Couldn’t have done it any better!
One of the best beautiful pop ballads of the all times
+edgardo gregorini I'd even say one of the best songs ever written. (But that's just my opinion)
Regards!
Morrissey & The Smiths have alternative rock songs
+edgardo gregorini Today pretty much anything that is guitar based or has the traditional rock four piece but isn't rock in the classic sense is called Alternative or Indie. However, this is pop at it's best. I will always think of the Smiths as a pop band, because at the time they were light years ahead of contemporary "rock."
This song brings me so much comfort. It just takes me back to simpler times, my childhood. I love it so, so much. I always have. Such a sweet melody. The guitar. Everything.
My wife and I were just dating when this came out. Everytime I hear it, it takes me right back to 1987 in Austin Texas. Good days with her.
RIP.
damn that made me bummed as fuck
+Top10Archive Oh, God!! I did not know that, I feel stunned!!
+Top10Archive That is so sad, especially how much I loved this band, and all their songs mean so much to me.
So sad he committed suicide. Rip Paul.
There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
But there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win
… Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now)
Hey now, hey now
Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win (They come, they come)
Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now), yeah
Hey now, hey now
..”Thanks!”
One of those few videos that I can say “I was there” still gives me chills at the end with that guitar lick…..
It's sad that the industry can no longer create and produce such kind of music. this is way better than the music nowadays.
Master Gareth Yeah bro i feel ver sad about music nowadays :/
Master Gareth Listen to miley and Arriana Grande's version of this song. BEAUTIFUL
Master Gareth It's true. And they were true magic.
Roni Ralph Sorry, not into both. thanks anyways..
+Master Gareth True man today music is crap.
This is the no 1 song sustaining me through these trying times. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you.
