  • Romance really has been on the rise lately. I feel bad for not talking about other genres in Romance since there have been so many great ones outside of the Romance/Isekai section, but don't worry. That can always be for another video.

    It is the logical conclusion...
Before this trend, all animes had some sort of harem with no actual romantic development. MC would flirt around or be put in "echi" situations, but rarely commit to a girl, develop a relationship and make that a decent part of the plot. Or they would do it just at the last episode, feeling rushed.
This usually leaves people with a bad taste.

You pretty much summed up "echi"/harem anime in the 2000's

I think with the state of the world we live in currently, rom coms and just romance in general is a form of escapism that makes us feel good

Well said! Social media isn't helping our cases with the fake perfectionism and standards it shows. A lot more people are becoming insecure or socially inept because of it but still seek some sort of comfort through social contact--if they weren't so afraid of going for it that is. Reading romance books or watching romance anime helps deliver some of those feelings directly to the brain without having to risk anything or try very hard so it's kind of like a drug haha. Only issue is the scenarios we are presented with are highly unrealistic and can cause the opposite feeling (envy/longing/depression) in some people :(
Romance in the real world isn't as prevalent as it used to be, nor is it as intimate. The result of that is a rise in popularity of online dating and more of the romantic genre being sought after in the easiest way possible (this is, of course, not a majority, at least not yet. But it used to be such a small minority that it was insignificant, and now it's showing much more popularity)

One thing i will say as someone who deeply enjoys romance/rom-com's is that not only is it an escape from the meanderings of every day monotonous life, but it is also a show with a definite to illusionary end. I remember back to the harem days when every anime was some sort of wild harem, and the show would end on a cliff hanger, regardless of it being the last it will be shown or not. Show's like "A galaxy next door" for example have definite endings, its more like a journey rather than being lost in a web of random fan service episodes.
I believe that like all things, romance genres will fade in and out of the eye of the public. But in a time as divided and spiteful as the world is now, whats the harm in enjoying it as much as we can.
(Also romance genre's generally bring out a huge bouquet of emotions, depending on the show of course. I don't tear up often in every day life, but seeing people on my screen feel what is like genuine happiness/sadness/joy/love makes me happily teary eyed to be able to see a journey like such.)

The villainess subgenre is exploding and I'm loving it. It forces the female character to be more respectable than a typical harem eyecandy airhead, which I find very appealing - I like my waifus competent ^^'. It also completely upends the standard power/respect dynamic where the mc starts from scratch and develops, because here the character starts at the top in terms of power and is facing fantastical obstacles in terms of earning respect, so it's less about getting stronger and more about using the strength in a perfectly planned way to overcome the prejudices and antagonistic environment. It's so refreshing and allows for a unique "overpowered hated benevolent underdog female" mashup of an experience. I'm a sucker for those anime and gulp them down as they go, my current favorite being the lvl99 villainess. I mean... what can go wrong if you cast a spell into the air right? An F5 tornado maybe? Who cares rite? 😂

It comes to my curiosity that the 4 tittles you showed (and from last year too) most of them are shoujo. So I have to quote from AnimeNews Network's article:
[Crunchyroll held a business seminar on Tuesday aimed at Japanese businesses. Part of the presentation centered on explaining current consumer trends in the west based on the service's viewership numbers. Chief Customer Officer Asa Suehira explained that while shonen battle anime and "isekai" fantasy series continue to dominate, anime aimed at a female audience have strong growth potential. He stated that these titles tend to over-perform due to unmet demand from low supply, citing Fruits Basket as an example.] - Crunchyroll: Shojo Anime Genre Has Strong Growth Potential, posted on 2022-03-31.
Also noted that Villainess reincarnation or Villainess isekaid themes are still strong trend on Manga/Manhwa and Ligtht Novel targeted to women (shoujo/josei), not all of them are romance but romance for women are the new fresh air you all getting.

You realize there is 'romance' in anything?
It doesn't have to be a person to person romance, it could be a romance with a theme or subject, like warfare or survival or a slow life.

Shield Hero is on S4?! Loved S1 but fell off when S2 started making way less sense and just felt like pure filler. Might be high time to check if S3 rights the wrongs...

I think S3 was pretty good.
Of course, S1 is peak and is very hard to top, but what S2 failed at, S3 redeemed (IMO, might be biased as I love Shield Hero). I think it's worth to at least peek.
