I love Chad Smith because he's just the RIGHT amount of flash, built on a solid foundation of tight grooves! He's the kind of drummer that does a drum solo that is pleasing to the masses and easy to follow -- not just random chops, rudiments, and free-flow time signatures that your "average person" wont get. He speaks in a drum language that all people can easily appreciate. And, most importantly, he understands that drums (and music) are supposed to be fun! Chad is one of the most kick-ass mainstream rock n' roll drummers out there....and at 59 years old, he's showing no signs of slowing down. Kudos to Chad!

What I like about Chad is that he's clearly a great player who can do all big fills, tricky beats, etc. But with rhcp, he's generally happy to sit in the pocket and just do what serves the song - and this usually means being more simple than complicated. I really like and respect that.

Maybe I should have specified this in the original comment. He certainly adds fills, improvises, etc, when he plays live. I just like the fact he can do this, but he holds back in the recorded versions. I think it's cool.

I am a drummer my self and Chad drumming is EZ.... pop songs, sometimes great in the past but is an good average drummer!!!
More than anything, I really feel his timing is that of a professional drummer, it's spot on. Could care less about his licks, or the costumes etc.... I guess it's just nice to hear a seasoned pro play drums without a band and just nail great time.
