    For the testing of the DC power supply, what would be the cause if the multimeter was going lower than zero? I'm using an analog multimeter with the exact same measurement calibration you set.

    Thank you! Very helpful. My question is that if the battery mechanism is only showing 3.30 on the meter then does the battery mechanism need replaced or are we just better off putting in a who new motherboard?

    What if there is a leakage of voltage in the battery bouncer? I plugged in the power and tested the voltage. It started at 1.8V, but eventually went to zero. I assure there is a damage in one of the motherboard capacitors?

    My DC power supply measures 17V (OUTPUT = 20V). Does that mean the problem lies from my laptop charger?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    I own the Acer Aspire E1-571G which its DC power jack was loose and sometimes not charging the battery , once I open the laptop and tried to fix the power jack loose connection wire , however suddenly my Iron solder shortcutted to the power jack body and sparked and my laptop never turn on anymore , I guess polar diode connected to power input socket may harmed
    I really appreciated to have any advice or repair procedure for this issue

    Hallo! How can you tell if the power circuit/charger inside the computer is working or faulty? The laptop powers on, but will not charge the Battery. I'm curious if the battery is faulty or faulty charging board or power management software< The battery is likely more than 2 years old.
    Thank YOU!

    hi, nice video, but I have a question, if is dangerous to connect the jack cable to the motherboard jack how can I checked? is normal to have continuity between the ground pins and the positive pin? I desolder the jack cause my friend says It make smoke and get redhot light from it, Is the motherboard pins shortcircuit if it had continuity between the 4 pins and the 5 postivie pin? (my multimeter read 1 if it fail, and 0 if it had continuity, but thos is giving me 0.004), how can I test? thx in advance

    Hello Jason, Thank you for the procedure in checking DC Jack. I have a question though. You told in the video that if you don't get any reading in the battery port, motherboard is dead so I'ts for replacement already. I am fixing a netbook Acer Aspire ZG5 with good battery, I checked power adapter and DC Jack, both has reading 19v but when I tried to turn on the unit, it's not turning on without a battery. When I insert the battery it's turning on but the battery is not charging, discharging only even the power adapter is plug in. The motherboard is good, where could be the problem?

    • @JasonSmart
      @JasonSmart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tricky one, could be anything on the motherboard along the way that carries the power to the charger port. Unfortunately motherboard repairs are a little out of my depth, I usually opt to replace it. Let me know if you succeed with this one.

      I'd switch out the DC jack 1st. Process of elimination and cheaper than a motherboard. Hopefully it's the cable version of the DC jack otherwise you're looking at de-soldering and re-soldering which can be tricky without experience.

      +Tayo Rizieg Doesn't really matter, you're looking for a reading and not dead life.

      Jason Smart thanks jason, when i put the other way around it read ok otherwise it read (-) :)

    • @JasonSmart
      @JasonSmart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, if you get red and black wrong way the reading will show either positive or negative. On the battery module test as long as you get a reading it doesn't matter. What you're trying to see is that power is getting from the DC jack to the battery charger elements.
      Keep in mind different laptops can be configured differently.

    • @JasonSmart
      @JasonSmart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nicoclause Hi nicoclause. If you have a multimeter you can test the power supply. Set it to how I've set mine in the video and simply hold one of the tips on the outside metal part of the tip that plugs into the laptop, and touch the other tip on the inside of the jack. Most power supplies have a small pin in the centre. Try carefully to touch that and noting else. Should read around 19v. If it's not got a pin in the centre, then you should be able to touch the metal wall on the inside. Good luck.
      My guess is that the power supply is faulty. If the laptop was faulty, the LED would stay on regardless. Clould be wrong though hence why you should test the power pack.

      @rosros6960 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, nicoclause. I have the same problem and I can't understand if the problem is with the power adaptor, power jack or with a motherboard. My power supply has small pin in the centre, I checked it with a multimeter - it was 3.5V but on the inside of the tip it was 19.5V. then I connected separated power jack on to the supply cable and it was reading 19V. When I connect those two to motherboard, the light on the power adapter goes off and no power is coming off. I can't understand what exactly triggers the disappearance of the power. What did you do? How did you solve it? Thanks!

    • @AnyLastWords_
      @AnyLastWords_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey guys. Thanks for opening up this discussion. I am having the same issue with my Dell laptop. Multimeter reads 19.5ish volts on AC Adapter when unplugged. When I plug it into the dc jack on the laptop, the green indication light goes away on power supply and if I sniff near the hole (don't laugh lol) I can smell the residue of hot electronics which is different than the other holes... also, if I sniff on the inside of the laptop that smell does not come up. Only at the DC hole where it connects to power. Did any of you figure out the issue? My guess is that either the power supply or the laptop has a fail safe that shuts it off when it detects a short circuit to prevent longterm damage? I will replace the DC strip in the laptop and see if that resolves. If it doesn't, then I guess it's the mother board.... any thoughts y'all? T

    Isn't it a bit too early to simply swap the motherboard, the second the DC jack is fine? The DC jack isn't the only component, which can be replaced. So jumping straight to motherboard replacement seems like an overkill to me.

    • @Major-Kudos
      @Major-Kudos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the computer is not charging or getting power, it's either the battery or the dc jack, or the charger itself. If none of those fix it, then it's a bad board. Doing a SMC reset can save the day quite often, so that's often the very first thing I try.

      +100timezcooler I tried per your picture that you sent for testing with a wire. But I get zero on my old jack so I bought a new one (for an Acer Aspire 4743). BUT I also get zero on the new one. It seems the probability of a new one being bad too is pretty small (though possible). I went to a phone/laptop repair place and they stuck their pins in the end of the the connecting tab (not the top as in in your picture) and got about 1 (or .1) readings on both using some power supply they had so said that they were BOTH were good. I thought I should get a reading of about 19 as (I tested) in the inputting charger (though my charger is not from this computer because it is missing).

      Have something similar on a machine I'm looking at now. The motherboard side of the DC jack cable gives me 1V. Power adapter gives me 19V.
      I'm leaning towards a bad jack, except I just replaced this jack a few months ago (was broken from case damage). And it charged the laptop fully the day before. Today no power to the board - although it does run on battery.
      Looking for clarification on the 1V thing. I'm fairly confident it should be 19V and that I'm dealing with wonky power jack.
