    I've been watching you for awhile, you give me hope! I'm disabled (poor). Ive been saving for 18 months, I have 1700.00 now. I only can afford rad rover. I have no tools and I'm not mechanically inclined, I was a cook before becoming disabled. Lol but I'm heavy, so I need upgrade, I'm going to but the new controller, with new screen, and show someone your videos and pay them to install it for me. I'm also buying the duel parallel battery connecter from Bolton, then save up and buy a 48v 20ah and run it parallel with the stock rad battery, then on long rides I'll have a battery approximately 48v 36ah! I know I'll need it because I'm out of shape, weak legs, diabetic, blood pressure bad, etc. So the throttle will be my best friend for awhile. Hopefully I can add some peddling when I get Healthier, I was 280 I'm now down to 257 from walking my dog. Your videos are great and a true source of ebike knowledge.

I think I’ll just go with the controller upgrade for now. If that doesn’t give me what I need for the steep grades I have where I live then I’ll try the motor. Don’t see a need for the others (unless I need more range later). Thanks for doing this and please keep ‘em coming.

I enjoy watching your videos because of your unbiased and honest opinions and comments. I have some accessories installed for patrolling purpose. By the way, I am waiting for the controller upgrade i ordered through Bolton Bikes and just recently ordered the 750watts motor from ElectroBikesWorld. I will ordered the 52v battery as well. I have not prior experience whatsoever with any type of bikes brakes, but I was getting tired of adjusting the mechanical brakes from factory. At one point I replaced then with another mechanical brakes and wasted my time and money. I learned how to install and bleed the HD brakes; They are awesome. @@dantepastrano3028 does the brake upgrade retain the motor cutoff cables?

    • @dantepastrano3028
      @dantepastrano3028 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CitizenCycle Excellent question! I was seconds away from disaster when all of the sudden the light bulb click on. The factory cutoff cable of the RadRover is standard; I used the ones from the RadRover to replace the one that came with the Zurich. I ordered the Zurich with the wrong connector, so I was about to cut the connector from the RadRover original Tektro, luckily I realized that the cutoff portion that attach the lever is a magnet an it was exactly the same size as the new one. So I just swapped them. Believe me, you will only regret not having done it before! The Difference is amazing and not having to adjust them that often, is priceless to me.

    Did the controller upgrade on my 2017 radrover and agree it's worth it. I do 30+ mile rides in lots of big hills. They claim 20 miles at 20 mph on the flat. Cannot confirm cuz never seen what 20 miles of flat looks like. I've done roundtrip from Norway to Bethel Maine (49 miles) on one battery. Was doing battery anxiety cuz the BBQs bars and strip clubs have I would normally charge up on my travels have been closed. Bought 2nd battery for last hills to my house cuz Tommy doesn't push 80 lbs up hill. Wish I'd known about the 52V 17.5 ah battery cuz rad stock (2017) is 11.5 amp hours. I could problably do 60-70 mi with that rig. Trying to burn up my stock motor so I'll have to upgrade to the bigger 750 watt motor. Perfect rig for those of us who used to be pushing 65 are but are now pulling. Very useful series of videos for the radrivers of the world. Kyle at Bolton better be making a bunch of controllers cuz I think the demand will be going up. Also should stock up on those motors. I'll be adding the hydraulic brakes next. I finally replaced my pads after 1400 miles and was pleased to see that having brakes that stopped you is nice.

    This weekend, I installed the same Bolton controller in my 2019 RadRover. Much better acceleration as expected, but it tops out at 25MPH and I can feel and see the watts being tapered as that speed threshold is hit. Much like the stock controller did. I see your controller continues to delivers higher watts even past 25 MPH. I'm going to try mirroring your settings to see what that does. It feels like it should be able to go faster. Thanks for the great videos!

    • @devilmikey00
      @devilmikey00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe his is a 2018 rad rover so it might be that his stock motor is slightly different than a 2019 rad rover. I have the same 2019 model and ran into the same problem after controller upgrade. You can feel the bike being limited somewhere once you hit around 25 MPH. From what I understand the 2019 models have a limiter built into the motor itself so unless you switch the stock motor out you will continue to artificially limited.
      It's kind of lame but whatever. I only really notice it on downhills where I can feel the motor ramping down hard when I hit 25 very quickly thanks to the decline. I'll have to do a motor swap one of these days when I have the spare cash.
      Edit: I have now swapped the motor, my suspicions were right that rad motors on the 2019 were throttling. My top speed went up to around 31-32MPH after the swap vs 23-25MPH before. No way it's because the new motor is that much more powerful, it's just not being artificially limited. It's kind of annoying of rad to make me have to spend hundreds of dollars to get around their stupid invisible limits.

    It seems to me the best cost to power increase ratio is to only upgrade the controller. The hill climb power was significantly increased just by upgrading the controller. It was increased adding the motor and battery too, but not by a lot. If you want better top end speed then the new motor and battery is a must but for me, hill climb power is more desirable than top speed as 24mph is plenty fast enough for me and anything above that really isn't much fun on a an ebike. Love the vids, you just found a new subscriber!

    As someone with a 2019 rad rover who upgraded the controller and the motor a year apart these results line up with mine. I weigh quite a bit more than the person in the video so my speeds are going to be a little lower than seen here.
    So, just the controller upgrade is HUGE. Top speed was 23 MPH which was better than the 20 MPH I was getting at stock but the 2019 rad's have a limiter built directly into the motor so I was still getting throttled here. Not that it mattered because the amount of extra torque and hill climb was nuts. I could now accelerate through hills instead of inching up them while losing speed (lucky to maintain 10MPH before) and getting up to top speed takes half the time. Makes the bike feel so much more powerful even if the default rad motor was capping my top speed.
    I installed the new motor this year and my top speed is now 31MPH which tells you how hard the default rad motor was holding back. I don't suspect the default motor is actually that much worse if it was allowed to just do it's thing but whatever, I'm sure rad has it's reasons. Not much else besides top speed changed though. Doesn't feel like I gained any torque, I just have more room to breath before I cap out on speed. It is nice being able to stay with traffic in a city though, there is a noticeable lack of tension on the roads now. Before a lot of cars would ride my ass or make some pretty dangerous passes to get around me. Not as much anymore so maybe consider the motor/controller combo a road safety upgrade if you live in a city.
    I'll grab the battery eventually but I don't suspect it will offer much extra and it's super expensive. I'll buy it when my current battery bites the dust but I'm not rushing out to buy for it for performance. There just isn't enough of a difference between 48v/52v to do anything but get me to like 32MPH with my fat ass riding it if it only got the person in this video a couple extra MPH.

With the cost of a 1 bedroom apartment in Vancouver BC Canada exceeding $2600/month Canadian I think an ebike is a great investment. Now to find a way to make it and me more visible at night with el lights

    1st I want to compliment you for all the good information in this and all of your videos.
    One thing people should consider with a EBike is total weight. Your Bike even with the battery removed could cause some issues.
    This is very important when you are putting your bike on a car rack or a repair stand. First you will need to lift your Ebike onto them. Also they have a max weight limit that you should not exceed.
    I believe my car rack is limited to 75 pounds per bike and it is a heavy duty Ebike specific car rack. Regular car bike racks are limited to 50 pounds or less. Yesterday at my local bike shop I saw an Ebike one that was limited to 60 pounds (do not think it would handle a Rad Rover).
    My repair rack is limited to 80 pounds and again this is a repair stand I specify purchased to handle my ebikes, regular (home) bike repair stands handle no more than 50 pounds.
    You should remove the battery and anything that can reduce the weight, but be aware that weight can be an issue when transporting and repairing an Ebike. So be aware of the weight.

    • @CitizenCycle925
      @CitizenCycle925  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow I never knew bike carriers were so weak. most e-bikes weigh over 60 pounds. I have a truck so not an issue for me but good information thanks!!

    This has been so very informative and I thank you for taking the time to do the upgrades and for taking us along for the ride :) - I think if I do the upgrading, I'll go the same route you did, with the controller first, and then the motor. I feel pretty sure that I will go ahead and get the upgraded battery as well, because I have a thing about range, and wanting to get as much as possible. At the moment, with all stock parts, I'm looking at approximately a 40 mile range (I've only done 21 miles and gotten the stock battery down to about 50%), but know that with more top speed and torque, the battery won't last nearly as long. Still 'breaking in' the Bikeroo seat, and can only get about 12 miles before my butt goes numb :-P

    • @CitizenCycle925
      @CitizenCycle925  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      good luck with future mods. i havent tested range yet, honestly, range tests are my least favorite thing to do haha, i don't really care about range, i am only riding 5-15 miles at a time. maybe look at suspension seat posts...numerous people have told me they are great, i may add one.

    Brian i wasn`t sure what the battery would do but heard it helps but for couple of miles per hour the controller and motor were the best improvements. I wonder if you lost any total milage from what you did ? My orange armor bags are out of order so hopefully they will come soon. Talk about the heat it 93 at 1:15 pm and it just sucks the energy out of ya. Lots of motorcycles for sale right now i think people are cleaning house if they aren`t back to work. Looking at a 2009 yamaha vstar 950 tour - 5588 miles $3150 in Dalonega,Ga extremely good deal if it works like it looks -air cooled though. Market place. Thanks for the latest video do enjoy Pat

    Hi from the UK with my 2015 Radrover (circa 1650 miles to date). Best upgrade so far has been to fit hydraulic brake callipers (Zoom). Next is a DC to DC (12v) converter to upgrade the front light and to widen my choice of what to put on. 32mm front forks are on order, the standard fit are very cheap and have had it. Really interested in the 35A controller and will look into this - all very not allowed here... Thanks so much for the reviews!

    Thank for the video. Good value information. Theoretically, you may get higher speeds with your 52v battery on the older lower watt motor b/c then you'd be overvolting and running it at higher RPM's compared to the 750w also on 52v. With higher RPMS on an overvolted smaller motor with higher voltage, you'd be stressing the motor a lot more and risking it burning up. So I'm not suggesting that you should've done that, but for some crazy power, I'm pretty sure an overvolted 500w motor would run quicker than a non overvolted 750w motor.

    Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Costing it out was the best thing as you are spot on as to then how to proceed. I’ve put in that amount and haven’t ripped the bike apart yet. Won’t till I get the Juiced Hyper Scorpion. Whalen all is done the RadMini will be my mule and the Hyper my cruse show bike! As to your hub being warm try dialing controller back to 30amps? Save the motor! And interesting as to 48v and 52v batteries delivering about the same. This makes me feel positive about my Juiced Hyper buy as it’s a 1000w motor with 52v battery. The 1000w motor better able to absorb the current sent to it. To I bought Grins technology battery satiater to insure good compatibility with BMS.

    You are still a "Free Agent" hahahah, Dang dude, I'm hopin' that these commentors are purchasing thru your affiliates and you get back a bit o' lovin', time, energy, labor, parts and YOUR research is priceless.
    I have 11 months on my Canadian bike warranty after that I'm going
    Bolton controller. True 750W (I'm told) 16.5 AH, 48V, I'll upgrade to the 52V when degradation can not be denied. No range anxiety, but
    in a year or two the 52V should be standard in the just sub 2K category. Now for the next vids, suggestions you hinted at: spare 48V on back rack. Thinking you'll deplete the 48V first then go 52V.
    Not requesting a range test..................way too many variables that are in play, until A sponsor finds you (Kyle at Bolton). Install the
    Hydro brakes. Now if Bolton hops on board, the DREAM build,
    1000 W................40 mph Holy Grail. The Citizen/Bolton collab.
    Headed over to your new website now, Well done sir and will be
    purchasing thru your affiliations. RIDE ON!

      seriouskite I would buy up all the batteries you can afford now. China is on a tear and they control the mineral (Lithium) that goes into making them. We have that mineral in ground here USA but years away from digging it up and mass producing a finished product. I just bought a Hyper Scorpion and plan to order back up parts electrical/mechanical now. Will do this for my RadMini too. It takes forever for this stuff to arrive! Your in Canada and China don’t like Canada! Hope the CCP doesn’t look at the invoice delivery address and kick and bash the shipping box🤣. All best man!

    I realize this video is now a couple of years old, but just a quick question if you don't mind answering it for me. I just bought this controller upgrade for my Rad Rover 6 Plus and have the C5 setting at level 5 like so many suggest. Do you see an issue with raising that level to increase the amount of speed and torque? I'd really love to get it up to a 9 or 10, but I worry about frying the motor and the motor cables. Is that something that can happen if I increase C5 up to 9 or 10? Thanks so much! And I appreciate all of your extremely informative videos! I've been a long time viewer!
