You are doing such an incredible service to the community here thanks man.
Great and relevant content for performance oriented ebikers.
Hope you are feeling stronger each day Kyle. Nice presentation as always.
Watts = Volts X Amps.
And for those wondering about power relationship to torque....
Watts = Torque X RPM. Typically increasing voltage and/or amps increases motor RPM which increases net power even with same torque level.
On my Rad rover 6 high step I mounted the controller on the two rear rack spars directly behind the seat post. More efficient, cleaner less dirt water exposure. The contoller has Plenty of wire length to accommodate this logical placement location. Way better than the cluttered down and dirty low point.
HELL YES. I've been wanting this video SO BAD
I have the 6+. I grabbed a 60v controller that works on Sondors bikes and I am getting ready to fit a 1000w hub motor to this setup. I also took off the wiring harness and went with my own wires, that are much easier (just like sondors.) Yes I have a rad bike, but I don’t like the harness. I am also running the 52v 31ah battery from Area 13… I felt more power in my sondors that has the same stats as my Rover 6+
Bottom bracket mid drives are good for some things, but the gears on the bike aren't one of them. Outside of higher end mountain bikes, bicycles do not have underdrive gear ratios. They are designed for the power of legs (low speed high torque), not an electric motor. All of the gears on most bicycles are overdrive gears (that is, the wheel spins more than once for every rotation of the cranks. This puts an incredible load on the motor). All of them divide the torque, not torque multiplication which comes from an underdrive gear (where the wheel spins less than 1 time for every rotation of the cranks).
Electric motors like to spin fast at low torque, not spin slowly under a large torque load. Look at any electric motor in a setting outside of bicycles. All of them have reduction gearing, usually by a wide margin. Like a 3 inch belt drive on the motor shaft and 10-15" on the load shaft (A 5 to 1 under-drive, meaning the motor shaft goes around 5 times for every 1 rotation of the load, with the 3/15 combination). Even hub motors on bikes do this though through the planetary gears and not a V belt like on most electric motors in other applications.
Anyone telling you the bottom bracket motor is somehow better because of the gears of the bicycle is lying to you or is misinformed. They also wear out your drive train quite quickly. The bike's drive train is designed around the input of legs, not a 2kw motor.
Well done! Your knowledge is wonderful. Great information. I don't trust Rad Power bikes due to the early generations with 350 Watt motors and using the same motor comtoller worldwide. 500 watt on Canada and 750 watt I'm United States same hub motor and controller. The Rad bike stock power is a turd! Area 13 bikes quality built. Pay extra for Area 13. No upgrades are needed. We'll done Area 13 is A #1!
you have confirmed what ive known as a RAD6 owner. smh. On incline im at a walking speed its pathetic. im literally riding next to ppl walking up hill at max effort.
Just a quick tip! Peak torque is proportional to current if you haven’t saturated the motor. Higher voltage shouldn’t make much difference to low speed torque, but it will bring up the power at higher speed
I recently installed the controller upgrade on our RadMini ST. It's a completely different bike. Those long inclines are no longer a slow process.
I learned a few things here, but evidently need to e-mail your company about problems with my 2019 Rad Rover upgrade kit. There is a huge delay in power using throttle plus it lurches forward using throttle or pedal assist. This has helped cause two crashes, and has me almost afraid to ride it. I will say, it DID dramatically increase power though. Maybe I need one of the newer kits. I'll e-mail you.
Try changing c5 to a 0-3 one of the soft start settings.
@@Area13ebikes Thanks VERY much! I'll try that. 👍
I can't believe the amount of knowledge you process. I hope your health is on the upswing. You look thin. I don't know if, due to the condition, that's a positive or negative. Please take care of you, and I'll promise to try and retain all the information you so generously provide.
Inject Nandrolone for healing??
21:50 omg the glare of the light!
🐍 Ariel has been the highest peak power production bike with 1850w peak power(52v x 30A) on their Grizzly.
Can you test the torque and watts on one of their ebikes
I apologize if you covered this already but I didn’t have time to watch the entire video. Question, on the RADRover 6 Plus - how about motor heat/longevity after the upgrade?
Ya rad controllers limit right at the legal limit. My Canadian runner limits to exactly 500w. It’s pretty weak
It sucks but the motor itself isn't great either
It's a great motor. Controller is good too. Just has to match the country's laws. I have the 35A controller now. It's great
First off, thanks for doing this test. Very interesting. One question: Does the 20mph top speed affect the wattage output once the tire speed reaches the limit?
Great video! I was just noticing something; is the bike you used as a RadRover 5 actually a RadRover 5? It looks more like my 2018 RadRover, I know the electric system should be pretty much the same, regardless; just wondering.
Electrically they were identical so it shouldn't make any difference. 😀
@@Area13ebikes, except maybe the battery being more worn than previously thought due to age and possibly more charge cycles.
I have a 2018 Rover and a 2019 Rover, one difference I noticed is that the 2018 Rover controller has a max current of 16.5A; the 2019 controller has a max current of 17A. I suspect this half amp difference is to account for the tail light connector added to the 2019+ RadRover models.
Would hooking up 2 rad power bike batteries in sync be the same result as a 52v battery upgrade?
*Make sure you eat enough protein I see you slimming down, I was lil sick not eating 6yrs ago and your body will consume muscle Ect hope your doing well I know you’ve been sick* 👍🏼👍🏼
Protein is all I eat. 😄
The real problem is 95% of people don't get enough fiber also 95% get more than enough protein.😮
Google it if you don't believe me also look at the rates of colon cancer over the decades😮
I noticed the same thing about his weight loss. Did he get the jab? Which always leads to sickness as the recent CDC statistics revealed recently.

Can't your dyno put a specific load to the wheel? That would be a good way to measure (relative) efficiency.
Also just measuring the temperature is also a good way to measure relative efficiency..
Greattesting. What would be really interesting to me would be how the power relates to the real world,in other words top speed and maybe acceleration (0 - 20 mph & 0 - 30 mph).
Citizen Cycle channel regularly does timed acceleration tests after bike mods. I believe he's done a couple involving Rad bike motor, battery, and controller upgrades. You might find those interesting.
Yes he has, good tip.
are you still supporting/making upgrades for the RR5? just got a used one and want to juice it up! thanks
40nm really thats a crap we want 120 nm or above
With the upgrade i can take any hill.🎯
When will you restock your controller for the rad Rover 6 plus? Id like to purchase one 🦜
Do you know if the battery is not used for years and you plug the charger in and it will not take a charge. Does the charger check the min voltage before it begins charging? I know with my quad copter if i run the battery to low the charger thinks the battery is damaged so i put a 5 minute nicad charge on it to raise it up just enough for the charger to recognize it min 3.0v then run the lipo charging cycle. and all is good. wondering if this is wha'ts going on here. the wife never use it. let me know what you think. tried to call today not open, thanks in advance...
can you make the upgrade kit for the Himiway cruiser?
Yes... we might be testing it now. 😉
You know, I have a good question for you. With all the more and more powerful bikes coming down the pipes, why are mag wheels NOT more common? I always hear about having to re-true the spokes on a hub motor driven wheel after a time because of the power being put out by the motor. And yes, I've even seen these configurations destroy themselves. I decided to get a bike with mag wheels because of this. It needs to function in the field and be repairable in the field with basic tools.
What is your opinion on this? Mags or spokes?
I consider it one less tool I have to carry and one less thing I have to worry about repairing in a shop. Bike shops are few and far between here in west Texas for some reason. They just don't seem to stay in business long. A lot of the ones who have come and gone won't even touch an e-bike, so you have to service it yourself.
Mags are very heavy.
@@Area13ebikes yeah, but I find that they don't affect my rated range much at all and I'll take the weight penalty any day to avoid the tedious maintenance. I've trued Wheels before and without proper tools it's really really a pain
So Peak torque is at 20mph ( 245rpm, wheel size ~28").
Peak Power at ~38mph (453rpm, wheel size ~28").
Correct? No.
glad you wemt back to thr old rad bikes and proved what the numbers actually are.
No one cares because people have mostly moved om from theae bikes after their recent debacles
Hi... What about the torque plates on the axle...
Can they handle this extra power? I'm really not wanting to spin that axel and damage things... Which would definitely happen, if those stock plates failed.
Has this controller been tested on other bike companies? I am looking at ride1up as a potential bike I like the design of the Portola.
Does this kit extend the distance the battery will take me or just increase torque and speed?
What is the top speed on the radpower radrover 6 with the upgrade ?
Do you have any controller upgrades for the Himiways?
I mean yes.... not released but....
Can I wire an ego 56v battery inline with stock battery with my radcity 5?
the object of midmoters is not performence it iz weight distribution and center of mass
FYI I bought one of your bolton front suspension fork, after hitting a deer in route via my suv which took out the factory fork. couple months ago I decided to convert my ecotric 750 bike to a trike got it all together went to take off immediately the drop outs both broke?
Have you ever considered do a shunt mod for testing purposes?
That could be an interesting test.
I'd love to get a new motor for my radpower bike. How do I pick the correct on for the least amount of hassle? My bike doesn't gave gears so I assume I need a direct drive?
Depends on which bike you have.
@@Area13ebikes I believe we texted yesterday. Wifey and I each own a radrunner#1. Since we spoke I've scoured the internet to no avail. It might be that I am just not knowledgeable enough on the subject. I would love to find a single speed 750w drop in motor to replace the 500w stock one.
What does that upgrade do to range/battery?
Which kit would I get for the rad expand 5 semi integrated
Do you have a controller for a hyper scorpion that will increase the speed ?
Ok how do i get one for my radrover 5
Area13ebikes.com
I would be willing to send you my Rad City 5 for testing...
Hi thanks for the video. I interested in the upgrade. Will this upgrade work on the RadCity 3? Also on the first Radrunner?
Yes the 1st generation kit will work on both.
@@Area13ebikes thank you could it be possible to send a link where can a purchase the parts along with the video step by step instructions?
@@Paramocinema here you go! area13ebikes.com/products/radkit
can we stile get the old version of the controller for the radrover 6 plus
Which motor is compatible with RR6+?
Oh yeah, and comparing to hill climbing ability (like a 20% - 30% grade with the same bike, rider, wind, etc.
I have an older video showing the bikes side by side, stock vs upgraded. There's too many variables for it to be consistent between people, grades, weight, etc.
I'm talking about like this test, same day, bike and rider. Of course it couldn't be translated to other situations, but would be interesting. What does twice the power mean in real life. Twice as fast or quick; I bet not.@@Area13ebikes
I have a rad 4 city and I am considering the controller upgrade, stock I can go about 21-22 mph with a fresh battery, with just the controller upgrade what is the approx. top speed? I was trying to figure it out by the RPM number but couldn't read it and you mention not quite hitting 30 mph?
The speed can be unlocked but I don't necessarily advertise a higher top speed as you're only increasing current. To really maximize a speed increase you need to bump up to a 52v battery.
Do you have a kit for Super73 RX?
I'm Getting the same Bike Any Advice On This
Thank's 🙌
@Area 13 I have the radexpand 5 how would i go about upgradin the motor, controller, battery?
Short answer: Break out your wallet.
There's no shortage of components available.
I'm going with a 52v lithium iron phosphate battery, 100a controller and a 1000w rear hub motor.
I may add a front motor at some point in the future.
I'm not sure why he didn't reply to you, but I've bought stuff from Area13 before and their delivery and customer service are excellent.
Hope that helps.
💯‼️💙
Rad electric bikes customer service sucks! They also don't have a service/maintenance department anymore!
It’s very insulting to count on your fingers.
