- The Mahabharata is an Ancient Indian Epic and is the longest epic poem in the world. It was believed to have been composed as early as the 4th c. BCE or even earlier by the sage Vyasa (who is also a character in the story). As a whole, the Mahabharata is about 10 times the length of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey put together, and the Bhagavad Gita (which is only one section of the whole epic), is considered one of the most important Hindu scriptures. The story is still popular in India today, and children are still named after the characters from the epic. The poem is all about issues of succession and the lead up to the Kurukshetra war, and then the war itself and the aftermath. Much like the Trojan War from the Iliad, the Kurukshetra war may have actually been a historical event, but through time it has been embellished to the current form, which is now considered a legendary narrative.
This video will take you through the Indian Epic the Mahabharata, beginning with the king Shantanu of Hastinapur in the region of Kuru who marries Ganga (who is actually a goddess in secret). We will take you through the epic rivalry between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, and all the times the Pandavas found themselves exiled. The whole epic culminates in the Kurukshetra War where the Pandavas are victorious and Yudhishthir becomes king of Hastinapur and Indraprastha before the Pandavas and Draupadi head to the Himalayas and plan to live the rest of their lives climbing the slopes towards the heavens.

Yeah a far similar hindu scripture known as Ramayana. Must make a video on the history of Ramayana.
Yudhshthir is similar to the iranian hero, Key khosrow who is reminiscent of the Norsee god Vidarr
Not the story wise.
But Greek gods and Indian gods are a bit similar
Others have already pointed out similarities to the Odysee (Ulysses as a *legitimate ruler* , wandering the earth aimlessly after the Trojan War, having to disguise himself as a beggar, and besting suitors for his assumed widowed wife at an archery feat as only he could - there is even the part of Argos, the aging hunting dog, recognizing his master in disguise).
Krishna was struck dead at his heel by an arrow - the only vulnerable spot of his body.
That very spot is also chosen in a similar fate in oral histories of Achilles, a son of Thetis, a Nereid sea nymph and tutored by the Centaur Chiron (which could be interpreted as a reference to nomadic, Skythian influence).
In the New World, there is a Navajo tradition of an Anasazi gambler who indentured people - and while the Kannadas are actual Dravidic hunter-gatherers, devoted to Krishna, Hebrew tradition reflects aspects of the *cultural heroes* of the Pandavas when gaining a 'promised land', led by the 'lord of hosts', ultimately leading into another diaspora, regardless.
That Yudhisthira is favored is noteworthy - remotely like Abel in Hebrew tradition - as an offspring of Yama the God of *justice* (also related to the transience of time, death, the afterlife and thereby fate).
It might be an great war or an Indian based epic but it gives teachings and the knowledge of Bhagvad Gita to whole of mankind 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

One learns the art of acceptance and the importance of duty and action irrespective of caste or creed, male or female, warrior or farmer. This is the greatest story of human fragility and lack of human intellect when most needed.

Correction- Pandavas actually went to hell initially, after their death, except for Yudhister & his dog. In heaven, Yudhister saw all the Kavravas in heaven, and he was livid. And he could not find any of his brothers and Dravpadi (their wife.) Yudhister then asked to be taken to hell to meet his brothers and wife. He found them there in bad conditions paying for their mistakes and past sin. He then asked to remain with them in hell. However, Pandavas had to endure temporary punishment as a result of their past sin and mistakes. After serving their time and undergoing purification, they were eventually granted entry into heaven. Their virtuous deeds and righteousness outweighed their temporary sojourn, leading to their eventual ascent to heaven. Kavravas, on the other hand, had enjoyed heaven for their good deeds and were eventually sent to hell. After they faced their misdeeds, they reentered heaven. All Pandavas had an ego, greed, addiction to food like Bhima was, envy, etc., except Yudhistera. He was the only one who was wise and had totally been able to renounce everything. Including his brothers and wife. When Pandavas were dying one by one, he never looked back once. He had no emotions of any kind. This was a sign that he had truly renounced everything and achieved peace. NOTE- Heaven and hell in Hinduism isn't physical place. It is merely a state of mind. Being at peace is heaven, and suffering is hell. Therefore, to get to heaven and achieve salvation, one must renounce everything and be at peace to be in heaven. I.e., anger, ego, greed, etc. Then only you achieve Mosksha, AKA salvation. If you carry baggage, then you are essentially still suffering for your misdeed, as he has not let things go. Therefore, keep in mind that heaven is a state of mind = at peace. Also, this tale depicts how one cannot know what is right and wrong while doing karma. It is complex. However, one must do their dharma. There is more to it but a lot to explain. Watch other youtube videos on it if interested.

They say that, the war was so destructive that most of the men folk died in the war, warriors from all parts of the world took part in the battle, They even have a character named, KalaYavana (which literally means, Dark Greek man).
Pyres upon pyres being burnt of bodies, the land of Kurukshetra (modern day, Haryana, India) turned red in color and still can be seen red. The sun didn't rise for months because of the smoke from millions of Pyres being burnt, coverd the sky pitch black.
The war created chaos and crumbles the society, which Krishna already knew and told that this is law of nature no body can stop it, one will unintentionally only support it.
Wailing of the widows echoed in the sky and human civilization ceased to progress and gotten into decline. That's how the different surviving communities scattered and settled in different regions. So began the dark ages, the Yadava Clan destroy themselves completely through a civil war.
The greatest statesmen, politician, and diplomat to ever live, Krishna dies, in the forest alone, helpless, because no body is there, for even the God.
Last Virtous king Parikshit takes the throne in the declined society and tries to gather it, but then again, it has gone back to herds and tribe like cultures, from the glory. Parikshit looses and makes way for the Kali(Darkness) to take over.
Hence comes the Kaliyuga, the age of Darkness which we live in, tribes societies, nations, religions emerge, cruel emperors, Kings and dictators grow. The Kaliyuga continues in one form or another, so Krishna spoke.

Karna is a tragic hero of the mahabharata war. He was good and with morals like no other but his only mistake was he fought on the wrong side.

@@adityasharma485 The rules were made by Bhisma in which a group of warriors cannot fight against one warrior , it was considered to be inequal . He and Duryodhan didn't even respected Abhimanyu after he got defeated and he, Duryodhan, Ashwatthama stabbed him very brutally. Even after his death, they danced around him with joy. I am not including the insulting comment on Draupadi by calling her a 'whore' because everyone knows it was bad. But Karna was also got many insults from many Satriya people by calling him a Charioteer's son. But he was a good man from heart, but he was a blind folded devotee of Duryodhan which is also a big flaw of him, he was going against the path of Dharma

Very good video and explanation. I watched this because I'm about to read a fantasy novel by Gourav Mohanty called Sons of Darkness and its a fantasy novel based on the Mahabharata. This is one of the only epic fantasy novels/series written by an Indian author living in India. Can't wait to read this book now that I have a better understanding of the Mahabharata. Thanks!

a few corrections:
1. Satyavati was never married before. Vyasa was born out of wedlock.
2. Pandu wasn't exiled, he went on an extended holiday with his wives and children. Draw the parallel between bejng cursed for dying by having sex with some sexual illness, and he used to go away on vacations away from the city to live in the greenery of the forests.
3. There was no first marriage of Kunti, Kunti was only ever married once. All her child were each born from the Devas. Including Karna who was born before she was married to King Pandu.

Half God, with honour, grace, unique abilities and still with his promise he destroyed so much things and so much lives. Instead of ruling kingdom and rising Godly generations he gave kimgdom to greedy fisherman, make her Quinn, and plus started to serve her.
Im big picture we see there was plan from God that he rejected. And after that they made more and more mistakes. While her decendents die, she uses some rituals to bring new decendents of trone. And again insted of making rational decision they grant kingdom to blind man with trust issues, while they have Pandu, who is good candidate for throne. And so many devastation and drama because of indicidual mistakes.
GOD has perfect plan for our lives and we try to avoid. I am happy that I found purpose in life. I am happy to know God, and his son, Lord Jesus Christ. When we realise that God has the best plan for us and follow it, this gives joy in life. Feeling that our talent is not wasted and we live full life, with best possible outcomes and fruits.

The Dog was the incarnation of God Dharma ie:- God of Righteousness. It was from him that Kunti had bore Yudhishtira. Thus, Yudhishtira was son of Dharma(the one who in form of dog had tested his loyalty and compassion(Anrishamsyata- the highest Righteousness). After this too he is sent to hell for speaking an intentioal half truth during the war.
In Hindu mythology, Heaven and Hell are temporary places assigned based on your Karma and Righteousness. U remain in a cycle of brith till you receive liberation either by Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga or Bhakti Yoga to come out of this cycle.
Mahabharata occurred during the end of Dwapara yuga, arround 5000 years ago. Approximately 3100 BC

There's been movies in Bollywood of course of it
There are already 2 tv shows on it. (There have been many attempts but only 2 stand out). One is B R Chopra's Mahabharata aired first time in 1988-90. I personally recommend this for the only drawback for this show was primitive CGI. (I mean this is is 1988).
The second one is Star Plus Mahabharata. This was first aired in 2013-14. This has better CGI but the story was a bit distorted. So for better cgi experience you can see the 2013 show. But to really understand Mahabharata I really recommend to see 1988 show. It has english subtitles and also is available in uoutube itself. ( Channel Name: Pen Bhakti)

A little correction- pandu was the king even when he left dhritarashtra was just a temporary king until pandu came but since he died pandu son yudhistra should have been the king automatically but dhritarashtra didn't wanted that and never gave the kingdom back to him

The bhagwad gita is the recorded conversation between arjun and krishna when arjun decided not to take part in the war. The bhgawad gita is the quotations of shree krishna to arjun to basically pursuade him to fight

Droupadi married 5 husbands because it is related to droupadi's past life in her past life droupadi has done a very hard and etensive prayer to Lord shivaand when Lord shiva appeared he asked droupadi which type of boom she like to take and droupadi said she needs a husband who is (basically the 5 qualities of pandavs in her past life) so Lord siva said that it is immposible for these 5 qualities to be in a single person so he give droupadi the boom in the next life you'll get 5 husbands with these qualities , and one is that when Lord shiva apperead in nervousness and excietment droupadi said the word husband 5 times this also in her past life
