Wow, that kid did it right, and thank God for that. I'm happy everyone made it out, and Tomcat was ok, too. What a great story. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for your service, Sir.
I wonder if those little darlin's at Ohio State know what kind of man is leading their university? This man is worthy to be President of the United States.
I was on the flight deck that day. Didn’t know it happened until we got back home. One of our jet mechs who fixed that airplane said there were skid marks down the whole runway!
When I was in high school around 1983 I got my first job in a machine shop in South El Monte, California, we specialized in single point threading and most of our customers had something to do with military aircraft and commercial aircraft, Wiggins was one them. ;-)
Wow . I remembered hulk from Va-124 as teaching pilot. If I’m correct, he made it into the blue angels. Also did one of the best Miramar demonstrations of an f-14s abilities. Truely awesome. I was his plane captain that day. Over half the calfaxes were loose on the plane. Said he was running.98to.99 on a high speed pass. Showed the turkey could under turn an f-18 in burner.
Wow the fuse lit and burning on what amounts to a flying bomb! Reminds me of the Felix The Cat logo carrying the bomb cartoon on the tails of the Tomcat. Was he flying with VF31?
Moment like that make you or break you. You remember those times every time you have a situation and you have to "slice the raw meat" ( make a tough decision)
why not call in a kc each time you fellas fly together :) respect true heroes the cats were some impressive big planes and to perform such extreme manuvers one must have experiene, skills and balls of titanium. respect!
Go as fast as you can and put the fire out. The original sr-72 idea did that thing not leak fuel everywhere as well thanks for your service absolutely terrifying if you're not in an sr-72 I'm sure

Epic story! Damn those guys were lucky! I can’t believe spewing that much gas that the plane never caught on fire.
Cool story👍👍

No…he was flying this particular flight with VF-14 TOPHATTERS that he went on to command.
Wow.
It seems like all the best stories are from Tomcat crews.
That will make your hair stand up!

TF30s and a LANTIRN pod? Never knew the A had LANTIRN pods 🤔
Sure did. At that point in time the LANTIRN pod was more valuable than the airplane!
That time a Tomcat became a Blackbird.
Didn't notice a single cut in this story.
😲
That's a sea story...
Why, the high rate of descent?
My guess: Put the airspeed into the ground so they can stop in 3000 feet. My question: Is this the vertical velocity limit of the gear?
What service trained there in the 40s? Aircraft? Great Karma!
WAR STORIES every Pilot from Student to 30thousand hours has them. Great.
Wow ! What a White knuckle story.
