If you’ve switched from classic 55’s to AF1’s they’re obviously going to look smaller going from a 9” axle to a 8.5” axle
u didn't watch the whole vid did you
Is the numbering system different on classics versus AF1s? If so, that is incredibly stupid. I find it hard to believe they would do that
Just looked it up on Ace's website. Fing stupid
😂😂😂
Thanks Capt. Obvious!
Great video Zack, I ended up buying two sets of Ace AF1s last year then they came out the 55 and 66. I think for those or us who love riding bowls the 66 have been incredible. They work on my 8.6" shape but that's about as small as you can go.
As far as the bushings go, you were the reason last year when I got my Aces to ride them how they came and sure enough once they broke in they were fantastic.
I think one last thing to mention for both heavier skaters and those who like tight trucks Ace did come out with a harder durometer bushing to cater to that particular crowd who doesn't like looser trucks. Before they had done that I was riding a bottom Bones hardcore bushing on the top and the stock Ace bushing on the bottom just to have a more stable board. Nowadays I just ride stock as I've gotten more comfortable riding them as they came out of the box.
Well said Ramon!
8:08 Love that no comply. The video capture and editing was really good on this one.
That is the sickest bowl/pool I've ever seen skateboarded! Absolutely huge and smooth as all hell. I'm so F'n hyped to skate! Ace af1 66s on my 8.75 flight deck 54mm OJ double duros
Hey Zack, I hope you read this. If you're going up to 8.75 inch decks, you're gonna need to send the AF1 60s back to Ace and ask for 66s. I know this is a pain in the ass but the classic 55s are 9 inch trucks, the Af166s are 9 inch trucks. Based on how you like your setups this is what you want. The AF1 60s are 8.75 axle to axle which would will give you the exact same problem you have now with an 8.5 deck and 8.5 trucks. As someone else commented wheel width outside to outside is pretty much always very close to a1/4 inch less then axle end to end.I skate two sets of classics, 66s(9.38 axle) and 55s (9 inch axle) and a pair of AF1 66s (9 inch axle) . When I first set up the AF1s I had a similar feeling to you, They just didn't seem as playful as the classics and because they seemed to have a deeper turn, they were wheel biting (I ride 58 and 60 mm wheels). I'm also a downhill/free ride guy so I have an extreme case of bushing/washer madness. After taking apart both variations of aces what I found was that the top bushing on the classics is a meatier bushing meaning that the flat on the top of the cone washer is a larger diameter. The washer is a more restrictive washer meaning that it sits lower down, or captures more bushing . For me this feels like the classics have more rebound at the end of their lean and the more restrictive washer gives a more definite end of lean/no wheel bite. I solved my AF1 wheel bite issue by running a hard ace bushing (96a) vs the stock 91a bushing, FYI, the new ace bushings seem to come with new top washer/ smaller diameter bushing so new classics may feel different to old classics.I'll be saving my old top bushing and top washer if I need new classics down the road. The AF1s do ride different to the classics though. They seem to have a really deep lean which I'm enjoying, but I run my 66/ 9.38 classics on a 10 inch shaped Madness Ace Pelka deck and it feels super loose and surfy and very fun. PS you're skating really well the last videos.Like noticeably better. Sorry for the text wall.
I recently went with Ace classic 66 and put them on a 10" old school board. Btw it's not 10" throught the board as you may know. For instance I've measured just under 9.5" where both trucks are and my board is 10" just before the front trucks so these trucks fit my so called 10" board just right but really in my opinion the best way to know this is to go to your local skate shop and fit them.. check em out. Anyway I'm enjoying the easy turns with these. No issues so far. I'm running 60mm ratbones 90a. What kind of wheel do you ride? Thanks for sharing your info 👍
Nice comment. Coincidentally, I ride my Ace Classics 66 on a Madness 10" too, and I love their movement. Super surfy, super loose, super safe. In my case, I ride Rayne Joy Ride 65mm wheels on them. Amazing to big bowls, snake runs and pump tracks.
@@Ezzeenow If you are riding 9.35" wide trucks with Rat Bones and a deck that is 9.5" at the axles, I'm assuming the wheels hang out a little? I want to say Rat Bones add 3/8" to the overall width of the trucks due to being offset wheels. I always size down 1/4" when using Rat Bones. Definitely checkout the Rat Bones Dragons. They slide a lot better than the original formula.
Have you compared these to Indy 169s? I've mostly been riding Indys. 159s seem to be the sweet spot for me. For some reason 169s seem less turny. So, I'm considering trying some Aces. So, now I need to decide whether to get Classics or AF1s. I normally ride forged hollows on Indy. So, I figured I would get the hollow AF1s. But, it sounds like maybe Classics turn better.
@idmhead0160 Good tip, yes I decided to try the 60mm Dragons and got a nicer fit. They're still wide but not as wide as the ratbones and they perform really well 👍gonna stick with Dragons for a while, fun wheel.
tbh the triple washer in the inside of the truck axle has been a game changer for me. may only be a few extra mm of axle but i definitely find it helps me hold and grind longer.
you should try it.
Ishod tech
I do this always now!
I dunno if it's overkill but I rock 3 inside and 1 on the nut side. Nut sits perfectly flush with minimal wheel jiggle.
It also helps to prevent the threads on the tip of the axles being damaged!!! No rethreading needed anymore!!
@@AdriStouse whoa. Skate genius
Somehow, my comment got lost after several time posting it on the phone. I'll try summarise it here again: clickbait title! 90% of video is just Zack complaining about Ace's new trucks size, and how he didn't like it, because they didn't fit his board and nuts doesn't stay visible anymore, and blábláblá. I also don't agree with 2 different ways of measuring in a same brand, but they are clear on their page about that. AF1s got smaller, period. But video could had gone beyond that. Besides beautiful takes and skilful moves on bowl, forget about technical impressions, comparison or analysis.
I’ve been riding Ace AF1 hollow 66 and Ace AF1 77 on my big board and I love these things. Great video Zak. MLK is a fun park. 🤟you are shredding it.
man, watching you soar around those bowls is just insane to me. I just learned how to axle stall 😅
any chance there'll be any vert content in the future?
I have the AF1 44s and I changed out the bottom bushing to a stiffer cylinder for my 8.35 and 8.25 decks. I recently bought independent stage 4s in size 151 for my powell flight deck
Shout out for the Acid's!
Width across wheels is usually about a 1/4” less than axle width, as a guide. Full conicals v classics will also make a difference.
Tell em 😂
ive rode the 55 classics(9.0) for 5 years now ive had about 3 sets on different setups. i recently just got a pair of 44 classics (8.35) an put them on a 8.75 board with 60mm spitfires an i have to say its probably my best setup. i feel like i have more control on the coping with the smaller truck, especially on steel coping. ill def set the 55s up again someday.
Yes, the classic 44s with bigger wheels on a fatter deck is how I like to ride as well.
@@chasebonin7043 hell yeah!! works like a dream
If the wheels are Spitfire Classic, they are not offset. It would be a flying carpet board with trucks close to a 1/2" or maybe 3/8" too short.
You have made me want to setup my ace 33 AF1's again and i love your vidoes :)
ace size chart is pretty easy to find.. sadly the 60s are going to be small too. classic 55 = 9" axle.. af1 66= 9".. 60s are 8.75s. axle length is etched on the new af1s axle
It's the shape of your wheels is different. Sidecutts / tablets / lockins reveal more of the truck, are wider, and come out to the side more. Classic shape acid wheels are more rounded and not inset, so it makes your truck seem smaller. I think that's why Dan Corrigan sizes up on trucks cause he rides classic shape round acid wheels. But he's on indy, so idk if it's the same here.
True, but, Ace stupidly has different sizes for the same numbers on Classic versus AF1. I do the same thing as Dan. Indy 159s are my favorite on an 8.5 deck. However, I've upsized to 8.75 Powell decks now. I'm still on 159s because 169s don't seem to turn as well as 159s. And also, for some dumb reason, 169s aren't 9" even. they are 9.13". 159s are the sweet spot for me. I'm thinking of giving Aces a try for my larger decks. 169s just don't turn as well as I want them to. Once the Stage 4s come out in June, I'm definitely going to try those.
I currently have the classics, but been wanting to try the af-1's for a long time.. I know it's been a year, but if, by any chance, you have those 55's just laying around, they would work well for my 8.3
Zack, idk what it’s called but at the end of the video there’s a picture of you with a longboard I think. And the front truck is showing. It’s very wide. What truck is that? Thank you for all that you do. You’ve helped me a lot and I very much appreciate it.
I ride tight aces. Switched to the mag lights for a month they were fun but I switched back to the aces for the radius
Ace hollows just came out, so I’m waiting for those to hit my local shop! Also I would recommend trying Bones SPF wheels at 84b (104a)!
I love them with the hard bushings only 2threads!!
I prefer the wheel flush with the board too. If the wheel is slightly out due to a wider contact patch on a new wheel it's okay too but that's just me I guess.
I have the 55s Hollows and i see a little bit smaller i use mini combo oj wheels 54 mm
hanger size has always been my reference "size-wise" either triying different truck brands or, as an ace lover, switching from classics to AF1. Hope the 60's treat you well but, if you were on classic 55, the AF1 equivalent would be AF1 66
edit: 3 whasher on af1 60's might work as well ;-)
Null issues like that you can fix by making the sum of the parts get the result you want - wider wheels that protect your nut will mean you get the stability/width/visual you prefer and will make banks easier. It is like putting rails on a board that has really light trucks to hit the weight you prefer while gaining some added wear resistance, slide functionality, and stiffness / pop.
Improvise, Adapt, Overcome ; j
Classic Ace 55 = AF1 66 = 9'' as per their website.
Ace Classic 44's are 8.35" and i use them on 8.5" boards. I like my trucks smaller by about an eighth of an inch.
Ace Trucks with Krux bushings is the best 👌
Bro your and amazing skater! 🥂You’ve got me wanting to give ace trucks a shot 🔥
Thanks dude!
Yeah, I like to see my wheels just a bit... indy 159's till im dead!!
You should try some Powell dragon formula wheels
Dude, measure the trucks with a tape measure and check them against your old ones. It's probably that your new wheels are narrower. I agree with what you said about lining up the edges of the wheels with the edge of the board, not the end of the axles. That's why I always size the trucks up by 1/4" when using narrow wheels.
You should check out the powell dragon wheels. I really like them, it seems like others do as well. I’d like to see what you think of them though as you skate a lot more transition than me and the other reviewers I’ve watched. I think they’d be sick for diy spots.
And I agree the ace sizing is kind of weird. Truck sizing brand to brand is already all over the place. I think it’s dumb for one company to have two separate sizing charts that use the same numbers. I nerd out and made sure I got the size I wanted, but I know a lot of people won’t spend that extra time. I don’t think they should have to either.
Got the dragon 56mms with ace 77’s on a 10inch Santa Cruz old school deck. Rides awesome
Not for nothing, and I hate the hoverboard effect too, but to my eye you look more style-y on the smaller trucks.
Like your moving a bit differently, more stylish and smooth with less flail in your upper body, and your board looks like it's moving more smoothly and locking in a bit earlier and more smoothly.
Instead of getting up to the coping and sliding wobbly flailing waiting to lock in on your bigger trucks, on the smaller trucks it looks to me like you're just getting up there and smoothly, quickly locking in, and taking care of business.
Just looks more precise, controlled, smoother, and less flailing. IMHO.
Damn, I feel this too. Maybe I’m being stubborn about the “look” vs the benefits, you’ve got me thinking.
Ace AF1s are the best truck on the market. Indy Stage 11s are good too but they don't turn like Ace.
I litteretly hate whenever i could see the nut of my trucks on my decks, i think ace did good
I'm about to order some 77 af1s for a 9.5 inch heroin deck. It's gonna be the biggest board I've ever skated by a lot but I'm excited for it.
Zack could you try a dragon wheels for d.i.y. spots
Buenas desde España, entonces según estoy leyendo para una deck de 8.75 mejor comprar 66 que 60, no?
Patino bowls y rampas .
Que me aconsejáis?
I recall you talking about being sponsored by Tracker at one point in time. I'd like to see a video of you talking about your experience with that. Tracker seems like a cool brand, but I feel like they're not doing much to make themselves relevant in today's skateboard world. Especially during a time when lots of people are experimenting with different truck brands.
I like that board for me Zack I want to do more street skating tho but enjoy those 60s bro
Seems like everyone but you knew that the sizing changed.
My ace truck came in a little small, my friends said it normal and it’s slightly bigger than my other ones which is what I wanted but I like seeing my wheels when I ride too
You gotta try some powell dragons. You won't regret it , trust me... only wheel I ride now
With the 86a bottom bushing and 91a top as a standard "tune" you wont find many trucks out of the box that offer what these will....not my cup of tea...but id consider a low hard 91a top and a 94a hard standard/ace bottom...bc its what i like in a truck/board feel. They finally make the 60/my axle width of choice for most of the sizes/shapes i ride. I dont like the 55mm indy standard height from the 53mm range im used to with the older designs nor do i care for the stock/cylinder bushing feel/turn. But i doubt id run stock/aces/not turn the nut or break in the stock bushings for a would be "Signature ace trucks feel" as it is. For the same reasons i cant/wont run the typical indy stage 11 out of the box setup. Ive even ran stock/soft stage 4s...which i can find/adapt more for tricks with its cylinder/bottom bushing. Id say you could come close to an ace feel with the stage 4s...if you keep the stock bottom/soft bushing and run a 90 or 92a top stage 4 bushing up top. Just to offer the indy/camp something to consider if they dont want to buy/run aces....but want a slight idea of the board feel/turning characteristics. They also were one of the first ones to offer a matched axle/width for 8.38" not that ive ever really ran something ideal with my normal deck size. Only recently ive tried the IKP 144 mids or an axle more proper for my 8.38 setup. But id still rather be on 159s...venture 6.1s or even 151 thunders. So much more lock in and control with wide patch wheels while not compromising hanger depth or lock in potential. Aces are just too premium for my price point/bargain bin oriented quiver builds. The 6.1s, IKP hollow mids, even my first generation thunder titanium hollows were all on clearance XD...and how my quivers were born. Its just hard to justify spending more on a setup/side rig that basically costs a lot more than my GO to namestay setup. ESP if its just going to have me wishing my go to trucks were on a FRESH/nice shaped deck with fresh rails or etc...something that i took/wasted time on a grip job with...only to not really want to skate/push that setup as it is. The stage 4's were a whiff on my part bc it was a duel purchase with the 144 mids...and a "transition" to running an axle more on par with my 8.38 setups...IMO the stage 4...felt pretty tasty to run on a wider setup and something with more concave oriented to airs/transition while having A respectable amount of hanger clearnace...vs conical fulls on 144s or the 146 stage 4s which often fell out of lock ins...you get spoiled being able to slash up into the lip/coping and instantly lock into feebles and smiths...and get reminded in payments of pain with something smaller that needs a more perfected approach/technique LMAO
I had similar feelings on the width, I was coming from Indy 159s on an 8.5 and went to the af1 55s. I like seeing a sliver of the top of my wheel when I look down. What helped bridge the gap for me was putting both spacer rings on the inside to bump them out a hair. Depending how wide your wheels are you can usually still fit one on the outside too.
Zack what are your thoughts on element trucks?
Good for kids or adults just starting, but i wouldnt like to have those under my board if im doing full speed backside airs on the bowl.
I think you would love an 8.625 with 8.75 trucks?
Just saw recently Ace are coming out with hollow trucks.. I'm thinking u are gonna like the Acid wheels... Just as good as any wheel out there....
Iv got 55's on a 8.5 board and they're perfect
I could tell they were smaller from the very beginning before you put them on the board. Cool that ace honored there brand
I’ll take those 55s off your hand lol been wanting to try Aces. I ride an 8.3 so I’m sure they’ll be great. Btw the progression is gnarly getting real good at them bowls
Classic 55's are a 9in Axle. AF1 66s are also a 9in Axle.
Zack "I like to see the nuts" Dowdy
Apologies if you've already done this, but I'd love to see a Mini-Logo truck review. I usually ride Indy's, but recently picked up a pair of Mini's, and holy shit I'm surprised how good they feel. Especially for the price. Now I'm curious what other guys think about them, because I definitely wasn't expecting to be this stoked.
I've heard great things!
@B True lol
@B except now that everyone is trying to become meme && everyone with the andy meme board is riding andy meme mini logo trucks
I'm still an independent hollow guy, I do have a set of gold aces though, they're also good but I don't really ride em much since they're on my giant ass 9.5 board
they just released a af1 hollow. and no im not talking about the low ones.
@@3jsu5 yeah I saw advertisements, I'm interested in checking em out. If my local shop orders some I'll probably buy em just to support, I've been slacking way too hard though, my new indy hollows ain't even broke in yet. They got like 3 scuffs on the black powder coat. Not that I'm very good or anything, but I definitely need to ride em more
Dude the title of this video should be "I BOUGHT THE WRONG SIZE ACES BECAUSE I DIDN'T LOOK AT THE CHART"
😂😂😂😂
i bought the wrong ones too when they came out
ace trucks just came out with AF1 hollows!
I think the classics turn better than the af1 hollows.. I switched to bones medium bushings in the classics and they still turn better
I am impressed that people can skate AF1s. Haven’t tried the Classics but was stoked when I got the AF1s when they released. But I could barely stand still on them without tipping down to wheel bite positioning. Tried jerry rigging with other bushings but Ace bushings are a different size. So I waited for their Hard bushings to reach Europe. That took maybe 6 months more. But even with their Hard replacement bushings they are still real loose for me. I weigh 210-215 so perhaps that’s the biggest problem.
I will try to skate them again at some point though. They are a nice looking truck and well they do have a very nice turn.
You can do Krux bushings in almost a perfect fit and takes care of the marshmallow bushings ace gives people.
@@timburrow2996 oh yeah? I’ll have to look up their sizing. I really would like to be able to ride my Aces without having to more or less force myself to do it.
I like to refer to the stock Ace bushings as whipped cream bushings personally 😂.
Ace hard bushings should fix that issue but your wait can definitely play a part.
Riptide bushing work great in af1’s. You can mess around with flat washers if you need to change height at all.
I had the same problem. I but a bones hard bottom bushing in place of the top ace bushing. Problem solved!
The first time I tried ace the hardware was loose and my wheel came off
AF1 55s are a half inch shorter than Classic 55s
There’s also a 2mm height difference between the classics and af1s , classics sit at 55mm and af1s are a 53mm truck
Hell yeah the handplant is getting more solid Zack!!!
Drives me nuts that Ace has their own sizing. 55 in classic SHOULD BE THE SAME as 55 in AF1. I love everything else about them but thats total BS. they had the control over that and totally blundered it.
The classics are the only truck sizing that offers 8.35 if you get rid of that there like every other truck sizing
Ace af1s 44 are 8.25 axle basically
The classics had a weird 8.5 sizing but the af1s are true to size but they don't have any trucks with a 8.75 axle. On the af1s they go 55 are 8.5 and 60 are 9
Nah 66s are 9”. They didn’t have 8.75” at first but then they came out with the 60s.
I remember venture trucks when they first come out, everyone compared them to indys but they were so much cheaper as a kid to buy venture.
Ace has the same problems cheaper but you hear stories mostly from hardware snobs.
Ace AF1’s are actually more expensive compared to other trucks
Not cheaper at all.
The classic 55’s have a 9 inch axel and the new af1 55’s are 8.5 axel
What’s the music?
They actually have a translation table on their website - beats me why they had to do this nonsense…
I think their plan is to phase out the old as well as the old sizing chart. From a retail perspective, unfortunately theres never a good time to roll things like this out. There will always be disappointed customers when a company tries to move forward/innovate.
It does cover more different sizes of boards, AF1's cover every quarter inch and Classics cover in-between
I go by axle length. But I get what you are saying. You like outside of your wheels to at least be setting the same as the width of your deck. And if you go by length of axle your wheels will be setting a little under the deck. But I think when describing truck length doing by axle length is correct way to size them. So you need to always get a size up from your deck size to fit like you like. Me I like when my board is sitting on its side for it to set level between axle and deck (like when sitting premo) and not to lean in or out when sitting that way. So i would go with axle length to get that fit. I'd also like to try out some of those Ace trucks they have a nice look and seemed to grind smooth from watching you skate them and they have a good sound. I've been skating Indies for at least 15+ years only con to me is they hang up sometimes easy because the hanger bushing seat sticks out a little. I did skate thunder trucks for a while but stopped skating them because some how I'd always end up breaking the base plates which is kinda a weird thing to break, but it happened at least 3 times so I stopped using them. I also liked Titan trucks and they are the lightest truck I'd ever skated but their axles always end up slipping real bad. Never had any probs with Indies breaking or slipping.
I also wish everyone just went off of axle size. It makes way more sense. Aces are worth checking out. If you like to turn, they do turn better than Indy’s. I don’t like how soft the bushings are though, so I always have to switch them out. The hard ones they make are good. Really comparable to bones mediums.
Learning curve for me, I do like that it's clearly written right on the axel.
At first there was no form things are getting better ya skate on
Try out slime balls in 99a !
After being established fro so many years why would Joey change the dimensions, but keep the same numbers stamped on the trucks???
Didnt look like the narrower trucks effected your skating! 🤙 Also, the low angle shots were dope!
bruh just look at the sizing chart before you buy next time
8.75, is a HUGEEE BOARD,
8.65 is the best!
Add an extra speed ring on the inside you’ll see your nuts then
I have been summoned
Fuckin Dowdy rips maaaan
I think you should've kept the same wheels for the review for more uniformity to feel the difference purely from the difference in trucks.
Independent trucks .
Yeah, truck size to board size is subjective when it comes to personal preference, but they are correct when saying that the 55’s fit an 8.5”.
I personally like them to be even with my board (I ride the AF1 44’s (8.25”) with an 8.25” board). There’s people like you who skate trucks wider than their board. Then there’s someone like Andrew Reynolds who skates Indy 139’s (8”) on a 8.38-8.5” board.
ride the best....
i only skate Ace
yea i love the classics and couldn't stand the af1s....classics 4eva
Loose trucks ? Just buy different rubbers .
deym dogg, wrong size, AF1 has smaller size number than classics
#loosetruckssavelives I love aces!

Measure your AF1 55 and you will be suprised it's not even a true 8.5... it's smaller. Come back to Indy after your done flirting with uglier women 😉😁
I love ace af1's the 55's are awesome when paired with an 8.25 deck. 🛹
