I've struggled with depression, anxiety, ptsd, self-harm and suicidality since I was 15; I'm now 26 and everything is still the same. It's a constant trudge through darkness. Even when (if?) I was in tears before the end of first verse because I've had those exact thoughts. I was in foster when I was 12 so I know all about moving from family to family. But past mistakes and just life in general had me thinking negative thoughts about myself. Even now I deal with self-worth issues.
It’s amazing how whenever I feel like I’m at my lowest an Alex Hefner vid pops up with this kind of message. Alex you probably won’t read this and that’s honestly fine, and I’ve always hated the drama of saying that a piece of media has saved me, but I’ve gotten dangerously close to that same edge a couple of times these past two months and you say exactly what needs to be said to change that. I've been listening to a few of their songs recently but never heard this one, I had goosebumps towards the end of that song. Depression or no depression, all of us have had those moments where you question all of those things and wonder what our part and importance are in this world. I find it more often than not coming down from a sequence of happiness, when you come down from that "high" and everything else just seems pointless and not worth it, those are the times you need to brave and fight through. I lost my son my fiance and then my grandma who raised me she passed away 2 years ago from a heart attack. I struggle with a mental illness severe anxiety/panic disorder ptsd ect and it's a struggle just to get out of bed most days. I ended up in the hospital a few years ago from a suicide attempt and i still struggle with not wanting to be here. I just want to say ty to alex and Citizen Soldier because you both have helped me to keep fighting and not give up. Thanks for the positive messages. It’s needed more than ever in this world. All of the songs by citizen soldier or deep and have real serious meaning behind them and the continuing positive messages of saying to not give up the fight to keep going you’re not alone helps a lot of people and if just one person here is the song decides to keep living on instead of committing suicide that makes a difference

Alex, my full time job is as a psych tech in an inpatient, lock-down psychiatric facility. My unit has 21 beds. Most of the time, 3-4 of those beds are empty due to 1 of the two beds in the room has someone that we categorized as a 'No Roommate ' due to suicidal (SI) or homicidal (HI)0 thoughts or intention. Usually we have 2 Psych Nurses and 2 techs, or more (some patients are put on a 1 to 1 status due to increased SI or potential for self Harm (SH). Honestly, my 1st impulse is to show this video in a group. However, having done this for the last 6 years, honestly, part of me needs to hear this as a lot of the staff here has dealt with this so long that we almost have grown numb to this. We are struggling to be empathetic as opposed to being kind of 'yeah, whatever"l." Especially with 'frequent flyers- (reaccuring patients who we see once a month or so.) When YOU post these kind of reactions, especially with your positive attitude, you help to remind me that I am there to help and encourage them and that I need to step up my empathy game. THANK YOU

I recently found them a few months ago. 😭 I hate and love that their music speaks to me. "Never Ending Nightmare" and "I'm Not Ok" really touched on something inside me. Also "If I Surrender", "Weight Of The World" and "Bedroom Ceiling". I know it will be difficult to listen to these songs but it eplains so well how mental illnesses feel to someone who unfortunately suffers from said illnesses. I think craziest thing I've learned about Citizen Soldier, is that the lead singer was in a band previously but they told him his vocals weren't good enough for them. He didn't listen, he picked himself up and he found people like you who said "beautiful vocals." 💙
If you want another song by this band to listen to, "Hallelujah (I'm Not Dead)", "I'm Not Okay", "If These Scars Could Speak" are good ones. Or you could wait for the next couple of songs to come out, Citizen Soldier releases new songs every week or two.

Citizen Soldier saved my life, their music, their message, it is so raw and if we say it more...maybe people wouldn't be afraid to say them when they feel them. We could get rid of the stigma. The best thing about Citizen Soldier is the way they don't shy away from these dark thoughts, he says them aloud so others can say them aloud.

I'm dealing with alot right now i have noone no friends no family and it hurts alot. TH-cam and music are my escape from all I'm dealing with. I feel worthless and alone. Alex, my full time job is as a psych tech in an inpatient, lock-down psychiatric facility. My unit has 21 beds. Most of the time, 3-4 of those beds are empty due to 1 of the two beds in the room has someone that we categorized as a 'No Roommate ' due to suicidal (SI) or homicidal (HI)0 thoughts or intention. Usually we have 2 Psych Nurses and 2 techs, or more (some patients are put on a 1 to 1 status due to increased SI or potential for self Harm (SH).
Honestly, my 1st impulse is to show this video in a group.
However, having done this for the last 6 years, honestly, part of me needs to hear this as a lot of the staff here has dealt with this so long that we almost have grown numb to this. We are struggling to be empathetic as opposed to being kind of 'yeah, whatever"l." Especially with 'frequent flyers- (reaccuring patients who we see once a month or so.)
When YOU post these kind of reactions, especially with your positive attitude, you help to remind me that I am there to help and encourage them and that I need to step up my empathy game.

I think craziest thing I've learned about Citizen Soldier, is that the lead singer was in a band previously but they told him his vocals weren't good enough for them. He didn't listen, he picked himself up and he found people like you who said "beautiful vocals." 💙

I keep this song and another Citizen Soldier song, Stronger Than My Storm, on my phone's playlist. This song reminds me that no matter what, I have value. Stronger Than My Storm reminds me that I can overcome the demons.
