As a Gautenger currently working in the Western Cape I can conclusively and sadly say that the difference is stark! The state of Joburg's pavements, let alone roads are beyond disgraceful. In the Western Cape, whenever I have reported a pothole (of which the heavy winter rain causes many), it has been fixed within 48 hours and the pavements are a pleasure.

You’ve just got to love the JRA! Examples such as starting repair works on the trench entering the delivery lane servicing the Parkview shops, this after many years of punctures , damaged exhaust pipes and ripped tires, only to abandon work and leave it worse than before....

From 1983 through to about 1991, I was working in the Jhb CBD. Me and my squash partners used to play squash at the Hiilbrow squash courts, safe underground parking, safe and clean courts, safe to have a cold beer afterwards, etc. There was a fairly rapid deterioration soon after that. I wonder what it looks like today?

Here in Ficksburg in the good old Free State the roads are so severe you need a 4x4 just to drive to the garage to get bread and milk!

Grew up in JHB, and spent my younger years mainly around hillbrow, yeoville (rocky street) orange grove, highlands north and norwood (bella napoli was a weekly jol).
Moved to the UK in 2004 and we try get back every year to visit family in JHB and CPT, every year we head back, JHB looks more and more dilapidated, run down and severely neglected..... its a bit disheartening

I got to a point were i never wanted to see another pavement like that again! ( at that point they were stealing it)

Well, based on African standards, these new guys sound like they are over qualified. Reminds me of that saying/joke "Dad, what was there before candles? I worked in the DRC and let me tell you the roads here are going to look the same as the DRCs very soon. The only roads that are tarred properly are the main roads that go through towns and these are usual tarred by other countries ie : China or India. All the other roads are in a state, here and there you can see the roads once had tar on them. The condition of the roads there opened up a new position for entrepreneurs which is the locals get wheelbarrows full of sand and stone which they use to fill the potholes with, they they ask for tips from the people using the road. There if you can ride a SUV its the in thing all other cars are shot because of road conditions , low profile tyres are out of the question.

Aii this country is going down😂but even the titanic had lights when going down. And down webber road near me they were busy fixing some cable underground next to the road. Its been like that for so long it may as well be a landmark for our area. And it rivals the leaning tower of gizza both in height and in its age.

Anthony - Amazed how Vereeniging CBD has deteriorated. Neat, really well run and maintained city pre 1994. The transformation into 3rd world status started on day1 and headed rapidly downhill from that point - now unrecognisable.

Rate payers should be putting their rates into a private non profit organization which does job. It's so tragic, we still have so far to go before we are truely Africanised. I remember traveling in Nigeria on the road to the airport, the highway becomes a pot whole and traffic goes 10 km per hour. God is crying.
