A fabulous review Thomas! Thank you. It’s also great to see that the new Defender has REAL PHYSICAL buttons and knobs for basic functions like airconditioning. It looks like a wonderful and unique car.
Great review Thomas. I drove original Land Rovers in the reserve army many years ago. Not the best road car but solid as a rock. Glad you are so impressed by the Defender 90. It looks fantastic on the road. No wonder they are already so popular. Time to start saving lol :-)
Great review as usual Tommy Boy 👍🏻 I agree this is the best version as it’s the most true to it’s origins Thankfully you can get the rear windows without those vanity panels and then it’s really airy and has much more light and visibility I wouldn’t bother with the front jump seat and would have the centre console My only other choice would be , to either have it with rear seats or if you don’t need them then get the commercial hard top option Then there’s plenty of space for your bales of hay or more likely your bicycles 🚴🏻 Keep up the good work 🇩🇪

Had a 90S with 2.0 on order but cancelled. Ride with air suspension and 18” wheels was perfect. Length was perfect but front seat area spacious. Interior was dry quiet. Unfortunately my wife couldn’t climb up into it. Knee problems. Also, had guilty thoughts over the 19 mpg US considering our Camry hybrid. Ordered it first then she rode in it.

Thomas, are you familiar with the new Ineos Grenadier? Think of a G-class (without der schnickschnack) powered by a BMW B58. All the engineering was done by Magna Steyr in Austria, the company that manufactures the G for Mercedes. They have selected every component from the worlds top suppliers, and they are aiming for unbeatable quality and reliability. For example, the frame is galvanized for longevity, which is unheard-of. I think it's one of the most interesting new vehicles in years.
@@autogefuehl Perhaps Thomas, more investigation is needed? 😀 Please will you try to review Ineos Grenadier at some point and then compare these two beasts with off road/on road test and functionality? One car is the evolution of the Defender and the other is possibly, what the evolution should have been?👊
Because of lower stresses on the components. But of course materials and design choices can still flip that around, so that big components of weak material or of bad design can still be less reliable than of smaller engine with better design and more reliable materials.
Looks great, but the cost is scandalous. I just spec'd a 90 on their site with a few extras and it was over €120K. Let me sell my house so I can by a 90.
I totally agree with the wheels. 22s look so out of place in a Defender. My Defender PHEV has 20" wheels because the brakes are so big. I'd have taken 18" if they were possible to fit.
This is pretty much the exact spec I would get, but in the 110. The sad thing though, is that in South Africa, we don’t get the D200 and D250 6 cylinder diesel. We get the D240 (177kw 4 cylinder diesel) and the D300 6 cylinder diesel. There’s a P400 petrol model too, as well as the new V8. I don’t know why the lower horsepower 6 cylinder isn’t available here though, maybe it’s because our diesel isn’t Euro 6 compliant? This would be the perfect daily driver…
It's a good looking vehicle with a comfortable interior, a nice place to sit and wait to be collected when it breaks down and is towed to the dealer which it inevitably will due to being a JLR product, sad but true.
A G class would beat a Defender in any terrain except in discretion. From that perspective, seems like G class has betrayed its origin and now it's only a show off car with G63 most sold model.
It used to come standard on all models, but now it's only standard on the higher-end models like the X and the V8. If you order an S/SE/HSE or X-Dynamic, and want the digital rear view mirror, you have to pay extra.
It would be helpful to your viewers to mention the horrendous reliability of JLR products, and the new Defender is no different. It's not hard to find videos of owners complaining that their new Defenders are spending more time in the shop than their own garage.
It looks good in this spec but I have several issues with the new Defender. Firstly the price. I specced what I thought was a basic version and it was rapidly heading towards £60,000. Next is the reliability. JLR are constantly at the bottom of reliability surveys. Which leads me to another point, this is not a car for out and out off-road ing. It constantly needs OTA updates and fixes. Even rural Britain has major black spots in mobile signal. This is not a replacement for the old Defender. Can you imaging getting stuck in this in the desert, prairie, outback? Sorry it won’t move because the OTA repair failed. Perhaps because of these reasons, I’ve only seen 2 of the new Defender, driven by women who would typically drive an Evoque. This is not a car for a farmer or land surveyor. It is a Chelsea Tractor dressed up to look rough and tough. Oh and don’t start me on those stupid window paniers.
@@beaviccoon470 I haven’t seen any commercial variants on the raid near me. Perhaps the farmers near me are t as wealthy as the ones near you. They only seem to drive L200s, D Max and Rangers.
