Nearly 10 years on from this game and Coleman takes Wales to their historic Euro 2016.....

Ah, Beckham as a deep-lying playmaker experiment. Sven actually had the right thought to get the best out of Gerrard and Lampard. The problem with Beckham in this role was that all he offered there were qualities that Stevie/Frank already had, long range playmaking. Too many cooks in the kitchen so to speak. He needed a proper holding player at DM to release both Gerrard and Lampard but otherwise this formation was right. If Sven had a bit more imagination Beckham playing at RB with Hargreaves DM with specific instructions to cover the right side more would've been the way to go. Rooney could play by himself as much Sven feared he couldn't. And Owen was already past his best years by 2005/2006 so not starting him wasn't as big of a problem as Sven feared.

Beckham at RB is questionable! but agree on the point about him having the same qualities as Gerrard/Lampard in that position. Hargreaves or even Carrick would’ve fitted in nicely there

@@wonderwall1994 Sven once switched Gerrard - in game - to RB to beat that incredibly talented Argentina team in a “friendly” in Vienna, 2005. Was a superb game and performances from both teams. And one of Sven’s rare bright moments.

Dunno on the Owen theory. He'd always get you goals. He was wrote off too early. Not the same player at 28 as he was at 21. But our alternatives were Carlton Cole... And Crouch who never did it against big sides in big games, as much as I liked him. Owen had that record in sight, that was motivation enough for him.

You weren't dropping owen,he was still England's most reliable big game scorer at this point, sven gets a lot of flak.but there werent too many people who disagreed with the 442 at the time, everyone has all the answers 20 years later

This was a sickener for me. I was so sure that with a huge home backing Wales would get revenge.

I mean when you compare the starting 11's, 1-0 was a very respectable result for Wales.
