    I was a huge fan of Doctor Strange from the comics back in the 70's. This was the only film I went out of my way to see in IMAX 3D. The Dark Dimension was shown exactly as it appeared in the original comic books. This was a great movie for comics fans, the only thing missing was the alliterative expressions found in the comics. For example, "By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth".

      There was an exceptional run of the Dr Strange comics in the 1970s written by American Buddhist Steve Englehart. The stories were great, but they also included legitimate Eastern philosophy. There were two stories in particular that may sound trite or silly, but were actually well-written, one were Dr Strange meets God and another where he meets the devil.

    15:40 This was a big controversy back in the day. Tilda Swinton’s character in the comics was originally Tibetan, and Doctor Strange’s story takes place in Tibet. Rumor has it that they moved it to Nepal and cast Tilda because acknowledging Tibet would mean China bans the movie from theaters.

    • @wobaguk
      @wobaguk หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      There was also the small matter that The Ancient One was originally male. I venture the gender swapping of the character sort of countered any potential whitewashing of the character complaints that might have been raised had they not.

      Yeah, but I'm fine with it just on the basis that we got Tilda Swinton out of it. I normally abhor race and gender changes from comics to films, but this was one of those rare cases where I see it as an all-around upgrade. If you're gonna do it, at least get Tilda Swinton out of it. She brought the right amount of gravitas and pathos to the role, and I can see it going SO wrong if they tried to keep it true to a fairly small, inoccuous character.

    • @jimclayson
      @jimclayson หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The Tibet bit wasn't going to fly with the CCP. Once they jettisoned that bit of canon, they decided to just go all-in and cast Swinton, figuring that would cut off most people's objections... and they were right. I liked how they captured Strange starting out as an arrogant jerk, then developing into a somewhat more sympathetic arrogant jerk. I didn't love how they turned Kamar-Taj into MCU Hogwarts, but overall, the movie was pretty good.

    1:16 I’m not sure why you think Civil War ended with everyone on the same page… You may want to go back and watch that movie, or at least the end. Baron Zemo effectively won… he got what he wanted, which was turning the Avengers against each other and so “destroying them from within”. Captain America’s faction are all effectively fugitives from the law now, and Stark has NOT changed his mind about the idea that the super heroes need to be controlled. He and Steve have fallen out hard… the only hope we still have is that Steve left Tony a message saying he’d be there for him if he really needed him.
    Great reaction as always though! 👍

    I love this movie. I've always been into witchy, magicy characters and stories, and this delivers that in a really well told story of grief, pain, and growth. It's not as universally loved as I would like it to be, but magic is a touchy thing that is taboo in a lot of cultures so I get it. I think that was what really drove the meta narrative appeal and excitement for those team ups.
    It is a bit heavy in exposition this one, but the action is really cool and Cumberbatch gets to really play with a mix of duchy, tragic and reformed character. It's a good origin story.

    A lot of people found Doctor Strange underwhelming as a film, but I've really liked this one since it released. This one and Ant-Man & The Wasp are, in my own asshole opinion, better than people give them credit for being. And for all the problems the sequel definitely has with plotholes, silly cause-and-effect choices, and obviously incoherent rewrites, I still like DS2 more than most people seem to, though it's chiefly because I can relate a bit too much to a central conflict in the film.
    My only *real* problem with DS1-and you noticed it yourself early on-is that they tried to make Stephen Strange into Tony Stark 2.0, and they're just _totally_ different characters. It still works overall, because (in my...extended...experience) doctors and massive egos can definitely go hand-in-hand, believably. It doesn't _hurt_ the film. It just borders on the noticibly-formulaic.

    You shouldn’t be surprised to see Rachel McAdams in this movie considering it involves being the significant other (current or ex) of someone who can time travel / manipulate time (in this case using the Time Stone / Eye of Agamoto).
    This was the fourth time she’s had such a role! If you haven’t seen them, I definitely recommend both The Time Traveler’s Wife and About Time! I actually haven’t seen Midnight in Paris, though I suspect it’s quite good too. 😜

    @36:30 -- neither synapses nor nerves. the vfx crew is channelling the original very distinct oddball style of "mystical realms" drawn by steve ditko, the creator of dr strange. ditko birthed several other marvel and dc heroes, most notably spider-man.

    Odin's story was removed from Thor's story in the movies - it was shot and not used. Odin became an un-housed dude living on the streets of New York. I would like it put back in the story.

    Wong is basically the core of the MCU from now on. He's a bit like Mt Fuji in Japanese artwork, if he's not there, it's because the filmmakers specifically chose not to include him or because we _are_ him. Ok, granted, that last one hasn't happened yet.

  • @karabearcomics

    I highly recommend checking out the animated Doctor Strange movie. It came out before this one, and it really shows how much his training in the mystic arts changed him. The problem here is that they decided to tone down how much of a jerk he was because they didn't want him to be seen as a knockoff Doctor House (despite the character pre-dating that show by decades). But overall, Stephen Strange and Tony Stark don't just share facial hair style preferences (they do in the comics, too), but their origins are similar, being arrogant but gifted men who get into a debilitating accident and their journey to mend from that causes them to become better people, and also superheroes. I'd even liken Wong to Jarvis, but sadly the movies decided Jarvis should be an AI instead of Tony's snarky butler (changed for the movies due to them not wanting him compared to Batman's Alfred, as they play very similar roles).
    Baron Mordo is absolutely a major villain for Strange in the comics, sort of in the way that Doctor Who has the Master as the Doctor's constant thorn in his side. Not the biggest bad, but always there and a dark reflection of the hero. Dormammu has always been Doctor Strange's big bad, and in the comics he's depicted as a man in mystical armor with a head made of fire (possibly his whole body, too, but only his head is exposed). An easy way to see a more comic accurate depiction of him is in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (despite them making him human-sized there, when he can be whatever size he wants).
