I am a 74 year old retired multi disciplinary engineer. I bought 72 acres in 1986, designed and built a super insulated home and barn and have lived in it since. A few suggestions, insulate around your buildings foundation to the frost level, store excess power as heat. I did this with 2 hot water loops, one right under the slab, the other a foot down, While I have a high efficiency condensing furnace, I also have a solar/wood fired hot water system. When heat is being produce it was first directed to a radiator in the furnace, when air temp hit the setpoint, hot water was directed to the loop just below the cement slab, when the slab hit its set point the heat was directed to the loop a foot below the slab. That served as a massive thermal mass, with the heat slowly rising. In your case you could use derated electric heating elements, inserted through 2-3" hones, placed in a grid under your home to store heat. Just bore holes through the slab. Or you can use a well insulated, buried water tang to store heat. And you could dump waste heat from the generator into the tank.
You will never go hungry on your 20 acres homestead - great choice. Less is more! So you don’t need that big of a place when you think of it. Just Look at your great camper! But building two in one has big advantages.... house on top & shop at ground level below. One roof One foundation One heating system... etc. One thing I would highly recommend is a metal roof using 16” wide panels with all hidden screws = no leaks & metal siding giving you very low maintenance, long life, & big on fire protection. Building a rocket stove with lots of thermal mass to radiate your stove pipes thru. Congrats. K&Y

I enjoyed the 15 minutes it took to find your off-grid neighborhood in the hills on the east side of Lake Pend Oreille. I lived in Spokane most of my first 53 years and spent summers and most weekends at Priest. You are doing well in pursuing your lifestyle objectives!
You could always buy a property with a big hill, put in a winch system for getting stuff to a building site at the top, then use the winch as a tow line - tow to the house, ski down to parking... 🤔😃 Looking forward to seeing your choice. Don't forget to make sure you can connect to hi-speed internet. And don't let Riley poke sticks into holes in the woods. He seems to be a little accident prone. 😉😂
Riley has talked about putting a ski slope in on every property we have looked at... 😂 That seems to be a common theme with both Riley and Boone. I was relived to hear Northern Idaho doesn't have rattle snakes...

DMWI Awesome choices. Would love to hear how you chose this area? Those still looking might learn from a recap of what led you to Idaho and out of California?
Came across your channel via the camper build. actually the other stuff is also very interesting as well. Would you like to tell me why you choose Idaho? I am living in Germany, whatever you think is "crowded" is probably landscape from my perspective 😉 2 "acres is too small". in cologne Germany you spend for 1 acres ~ 1.5 mio € (=2mio$) in the upper class area though. But of course that varies much off grid. In which ballpark is the land you are looking for? If course you don't need to tell what YOU spend. But just to give me an idea. Is it allowed to build a building on any land you own? Here is not! how, how big, high etc is given you by local government.
They should build something like a small firetower to take advantage of the view.. They may also do the tiny house concept but built of mortar and logs. Then pack the whole thing with 2000 watts of solar panels and 2000 amps of lithium batteries. Dont forget the fireplace ;)
Congrats on the next adventure! Does this mean the Kubota will be joining the family? Be sure to have a hydraulic thumb installed. We love having a Mini X, skid steer and mini skid steer around the farm. Especially when our stream floods. ~ Mark & Teresa
@@AmbitionStrikes Look out! When I was looking for used I ended up buying a Komatsu PC27 love it. While testing all the options hands down the Kubota was the smoothest to operate with the sticks. Once I'm ready for a replacement might go for the Yanmar. Hands down it always comes down to dealer support in ones area. The skid steer will be the next purchase with a bucket and forks. Then you both could have a his and hers! 😉 While your there can you grab me one of the all new SCL1000 Please, Thank you....🤗
This one is a tough one for me. I have a 110 year old house on a town lot in N. Idaho that I bought for a job but haven't lived in full time for over 10 years. Not my forever home by a long shot. I want to sell it and pick up some acreage but I don't have the slightest idea how I will ever be able to pull off buying land and building on a single income (no local jobs for me in the area) the way land prices have gone in N. Idaho and NW Montana. It has honestly turned into a huge anxiety/depression trigger for me. What is really stupid is that I have almost everything I need to start a nice homestead except a good piece of land and a house/shop.
I can see it now. You’ll be calling Johnny’s wrecker service and see if he has a flatbed to take the container house and military truck to Idaho so you’ll have a place to stay and the truck to use while you build the shop 1st.
Last year I bought 25 acres and the property buying experience is fun. With the cost to build through the roof, I've squashed my plans to build right now. Though I've considered maybe putting a couple Airbnb geodomes on the land. I would seriously look into very specific details about an easement. Personally, I would avoid them if at all possible.
It is so important to be able to access your property, otherwise it is worthless! Airbnb income is such a great option for land otherwise not being used!
@@AmbitionStrikes Yeah when I looked into doing a shop basically off grid because I didn't want to pay to have a larger transformer and such installed a diesel military generator would be much cheaper and it had 3 phase to run my mill and such off of to which is awesome and save some money on phase converters.

So many possibilities!! 😊
So exciting!! Can’t wait to see!
It's going to be a wild ride!
I've heard about bad experiences of both those who had to cross on an easement and those who's land was crossed.
Yes it can certainly be an issue!
Congrats on the next adventure! Does this mean the Kubota will be joining the family? Be sure to have a hydraulic thumb installed. We love having a Mini X, skid steer and mini skid steer around the farm. Especially when our stream floods.

Riley checked all of the boxes on the order form... we haven't officially pulled the trigger yet but are headed to the dealership tomorrow. 😬
While your there can you grab me one of the all new SCL1000 Please, Thank you....🤗
Nice thing is the off grid property for acres wise isn't super expensive to find.
Yes! Raw land is much cheaper but it is going to take significant money to develop it!
All those properties looked amazing! Im more excited to see what yall build !
So many possibilities!
Love the Quonset house.
Very unique!
OHH THE LAST PROPERTY! Such views, and it comes with a Fox!
Foxes, deer, wolves, bears, lions and more!! 😳
@@AmbitionStrikes and yes those were moose droppings 🤑
You just got a new follower from Arabic Peninsula. You guys are really incredible!
Thank you so much!
I can see it now. You’ll be calling Johnny’s wrecker service and see if he has a flatbed to take the container house and military truck to Idaho so you’ll have a place to stay and the truck to use while you build the shop 1st.
not a bad idea!
Wan't to come be our project manager? You've got the plan down! 😉 Although we are toying with the idea of driving the army truck North.
@@AmbitionStrikes I bet the LMTV can pull your container house, just going to be slow going unless you get some new gears!
I can see these video is before you change the tires in your camper
You can't see all of our videos?
Just think of all the cool toys, I mean tools you’ll need to own! Backhoe, dozer, dump truck, sawmill, track vehicle…
Things are about to get real expensive real fast!
@@AmbitionStrikes something else to consider is who and what are the neighbors.
Neighbors can in many ways make or break it.
OK, get the drone out and give us some ariels of your new property!
I told Riley he needed to flight train at home where there weren't infinite trees trying to take it out... 😂
I got a place in Libby Montana and Spokane Washington
We are looking forward to exploring that area more, Bull Lake was beautiful!
Congrats!
Thank you!!!
I cant wait for more !!!!
Yes!!! 🤘
Awesome property 👍
We are very excited about it!
Gonna be an awesome to watch the progress on this thing. What's the plan for power to run the welder and such off-grid?
We've got a lot of work ahead of us. The lot is south facing so the plan is solar, batteries and a back up generator!
@@AmbitionStrikes Yeah when I looked into doing a shop basically off grid because I didn't want to pay to have a larger transformer and such installed a diesel military generator would be much cheaper and it had 3 phase to run my mill and such off of to which is awesome and save some money on phase converters.
Keep up the good work!
If you’re wondering about weather here you’ve obviously haven’t done much research, good luck, just keep the California ideals in kalifornia.
Hopefully we don't turn into popsicles when winter hits!
